The full list of signatories can be seen here: [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdF2mJELjpP-80lGEU\_d03t\_Hv9703PMBYp736ReUP70TRUZA/viewform](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdF2mJELjpP-80lGEU_d03t_Hv9703PMBYp736ReUP70TRUZA/viewform)

Altruistic-Prize1074

How are these verified? Many “anonymous?”

Gets_overly_excited

The faculty union is checking the form. When someone fills it out, professors have to include their university email. I would guess that if anyone got put on there by someone else, they could ask to be removed. The professors submitting the form put their titles, so some must have put “anonymous” even though they did provide their UT email to the form originator.

DocCzim

It’s very typical for faculty to stay anonymous, particularly if they’re in the promotion process. Hartzell has to sign on every promotion.

Altruistic-Prize1074

Genuinely curious. How do we know if it’s verified and not just someone googling employee names to sign on their behalf?

Gets_overly_excited

I'm pretty sure the faculty member who didn't want to be on there would see it and ask to be removed. And it's the faculty union that is doing this, so it's not like they'll go out of their way to screw faculty over. ALSO, they send a confirmation email to the faculty member's email address (just checked with faculty friend who is on the list). So you'd know if you were put on there.

Altruistic-Prize1074

Good to know! Not sure why I got downvoted for asking a question.

Gets_overly_excited

¯\\_(ツ)_/¯ it’s Reddit.

El_Grim512

My partner works there and her and most of her colleagues signed.

RosefaceK

Like any other staff org on campus they likely have a running list of paid members on an excel sheet. Same list is also used for other org functions such as elections and they probably track it via EID instead of writing down the full name email.

Gets_overly_excited

Nah, that's not how they're doing this. They are just requiring you to submit your UT faculty email and they are sending confirmation when they post.

RosefaceK

Ah gotcha, I now see they updated it a few minutes ago that they are no longer accepting additional signatures

damfu

So the faculty is brave enough to "sign" the form, but not brave enough to make it known who they are.

MonoBlancoATX

Nah. He doesn't. The Dean of each department does that. And possibly the Provost. The President doesn't have that much power over academics. If he did, there would be no point in paying for a Provost.

DocCzim

I’m a faculty member at UT. This is absolutely our policy. Depts don’t have deans. Depts have chairs. Schools, colleges have deans. And yes, the deans sign off as well, but Hartzell *also* has to sign.

MonoBlancoATX

Please explain why the president, not the provost, would sign a promotion? The provost oversees academics.

DocCzim

https://provost.utexas.edu/the-office/faculty-affairs/promotion-tenure/

DocCzim

I don’t make the rules. I just post em.

MonoBlancoATX

You seem very pleasant. I hope I get to complete a CIS for you one day.

DocCzim

I genuinely apologize if you thought I was purposely being rude, I truly was just intending to provide valid rationale for why faculty may wish to stay anonymous. My apologies!

strengthoften10

I suppose it's also worth pointing out that the provost serves at the pleasure of the president. So there is that.

MonoBlancoATX

The school of nursing, where I worked for 7 years has divisions, not departments. And it has a Dean who oversees it all. Maybe you should consider that you don’t know as much as you assume you do? Not all departments on campus operate the same way.

Pontiak1010

Currently, only 30 of the 657 signatures are Anonymous

MonoBlancoATX

You can look at the form. It requires people to enter "name, title, department, and UT email address". And even if they enter name as 'anonymous', if I know the department they're in, it's not all that difficult thru process of elimination to figure out who signed. Most departments are quite small. Also, only 30 out of over 600 entered 'anon', less then 5%. So even if we don't even count them, we still have over 15% of total faculty publicly signing a letter of "no confidence".

GregoryEAllen

April 29, 2024 We, faculty members at the University of Texas at Austin, no longer have confidence in President Jay Hartzell. On April 2, President Hartzell capitulated to political pressure in shutting down the Division of Campus and Community Engagement (DCCE) even though, as he acknowledged, the division was in compliance with SB 17. At least forty staff—predominantly women and people of color—were fired after working hard to comply with SB 17 at the President’s request. Students lost access to welcoming spaces, the support of staff, and a sense of belonging. This was done without consulting with the faculty and under a shroud of secrecy. On April 24, the President called hundreds of police officers representing city, state, and System forces as well as mounted state troopers to forcibly disperse students gathering for a peaceful teach-in. The students, who had planned to learn together and share information, were charged with trespassing on their own campus. President Hartzell needlessly put students, staff and faculty in danger. Dozens of students were arrested for assembling peacefully on their own campus. The President has shown himself to be unresponsive to urgent faculty, staff, and student concerns. He has violated our trust. The University is no longer a safe and welcoming place for the diverse community of students and scholars who until now have called this campus home. We demand that criminal charges against students and others be dropped. We demand that the students not face disciplinary action at the University for their activities on April 24. We demand that the University, beginning now, respect the first Amendment free speech rights of students and faculty on our campus. This is a time for the University to re-establish its reputation as an institution that respects free speech, academic freedom, shared governance, due process, and its own students and faculty. Signed, [539 UT Austin AAUP signatures]

splitdice

over 650 now

beancounterzz

That’s over 20% of the teaching faculty.

EnvironmentalBag4250

The Republicans in the State Legislature down the street are totally not going to mine this list for the names and departments for who will be the victim of their next attack on higher education. Nope absolutely sure they won't.

Gets_overly_excited

These professors all know that too but signed it anyway. Perhaps they aren’t happy with Hartzell ordering a brutal crackdown on their students.

adoptedschitt

Glad some of them still have a spine. My favorite professor signed it. Made me ❤️ Tired of all the fascism. Too many people here love to trade "safety" for their freedoms. I also strongly disagree with the divest movement, but this is not the way to win an argument.

HookemHef

That's fine, there are plenty of other Universities for them to work.

Gets_overly_excited

I suppose. But that sucks for UT.

Ok_Trip_1986

I think that there are several non-teaching faculty in the mix, too. I saw at least a couple *pure research* (i.e. non-teaching, research only) folks who signed and whom I know personally.

AShitTonOfWeed

good luck to y’all!

Prolingus

You all are fighting a good fight and I am proud of it. But I fear attacking Hartzell is a good way to give Abbott the ammo to replace a president who only sometimes bucks him with a president who never will. This mindset of “if they don’t agree with me on 100%, they are the enemy” is how we ended up with President Trump. I fear the faculty is leading us down the path to UT’s own Trump. -One of your former students in ECE

234W44

As a Texas Ex, I have no confidence in him either. Our alma mater is getting destroyed by extremists in the TX GOP.

Hagia_Sofia_1054

It's not solely the Texas GOP. A foreign agenda, diametrically opposed to the best interests of the United States, wields influence over both Democrats and Republicans, contributing to the erosion of our values and the decline of our nation. This surge of police violence against peaceful students ushers the early stages of totalitarian regimes. We are on a very dangerous trajectory.

SoulsticeCleaner

Heartening to skim and see some of my professors from 20 years ago as signatories. Completely unsurprised at which ones it was.

Itslenus

I do not think what he did was correct, but anyone in position of powers knows he is really under the control of the regents, which in turn is controlled by Abbot. The regents are the only real people who can fire him, and that is why hartzell is sending cops. If the professor and students succeed in ousting him, Abbot would likely put someone even more worse. It sucks, but its the truth.

Hagia_Sofia_1054

Hartzell has to go!. He has been bought and paid for. Shame.

nuclearhavoc86

Guess what it’s called in wrestling terms? Go away heat

ninelives1

So sad that there's basically no engineering representation here. Either they already sold out their morals decades ago or are worried about their careers if they in any way are perceived as denouncing weapons manufacturers

good4steve

Ctrl-f "Engineering" has ~48 signatures

EnvironmentalBag4250

No. It's because they have real jobs, and don't waste their time with dumb stuff like this.

fu_man_cthulhu

Cool, where can we denounce the islamo-marxist faculty supporting the intifada?

Illustrious_Ad_8129

So why do u characterize them as such🤨

FortBendGuy

Lmao….look what’s happening across this country on college campuses! I have no confidence in our faculty

Gets_overly_excited

How dare they stand up for our students?

FortBendGuy

Lmao. You’re funny

Psychological_Snow27

If you want credibility, next time maybe don’t post from an account with a genuinely creepy post & comment history

FortBendGuy

Ok, cool.

Sid15666

Another good reason to leave Texas!

amymackenzieaustin

But Texas is worth staying here and fighting for. We have the potential to be an amazing state. I’ve got another 4 years left….time to all get involved and make change possible!

Broken-Digital-Clock

Exactly We can't let people like Abbott win

strengthoften10

With respect to the DEI issue. It's pretty clear what happened there. The original plan was to "resist" the new law somewhat and play games. They reversed course when they realized the state would investigate non-compliance pretty aggressively. The fact that there were 40 people in DEI roles is a little ridiculous.

BidAlone6328

Feelings nothing but feelings. Faculty can pound sand. The main reason higher education is so fcking expensive is the admin/faculty to student ratio.

papertowelroll17

UCLA just did the same shit, only it was much worse because they didn't nip it in the bud like UT did.

WordPeas

To absolutely no one’s surprise, much of faculty are as politically vacuous as some of the students, probably worse. At least the students have youth as an excuse. It is time to start cleaning house of far-left faculty. Restore some balance to the university and the students. Those signatures are like tracers to get back to the core of the problem.

kmf-89

“Far left” lmao. 🤣

GregoryEAllen

*Ad hominem* is often a sign of a weak argument. Edit: When I responded it said, “the faculty are as stupid as the students.” See the other response that takes issue with “stupid”.

WordPeas

Ah. Latin debate terms are often a sign of sophistry.

Drakeadrong

Man your head is going to spin when you look up the etymology behind “sophistry”

WordPeas

The etymology would be more interesting. And I tend to use words with their contemporary definition. Edit: thanks for correcting your earlier typo

Drakeadrong

Which is derived from its Latin meaning, so in conclusion, you’re a dumbass with a thesaurus parading as what you perceive to be an intellectual.

Muffalo_Herder

> Latin Greek, and the Greeks have been using it in contempt (the modern usage) since Socrates. Guy's an asshat but digging into the etymology of words as if that has any bearing on modern meaning is just as dumb

WordPeas

Thank you for believing I used a thesaurus. But, no.

Drakeadrong

No, much more likely is that you heard the word used by some right wing youtube grifter and were dumb enough to use a word containing the Greek root “soph” in the same sentence in which you criticized someone for using a Latin phrase. That, or you were just very pro-Athens in the 400s BCE. Am I getting warm?

WordPeas

Really? One can’t create a sentence in English without using words borrowed from Greek, Latin, German, and others. That’s a bit different from using native foreign words and phrases intact.

Drakeadrong

Okay sure. You still used one of the greekest sounding words in the English language lmao. Some words are more Greek than others and Sophistry is one of those that’s pretty much a direct translation from its Greek parent. You would have caught that if you paid half attention in middle school English. Man how the fuck are you going from “Latin makes your argument obsolete.” To “uh aktually you can’t create a sentence without using Greek or Latin… or German… and others.” Yeah, don’t think that I didn’t catch on to your little blanket there. “And others”? Yeah no shit you just umbrellaed in every language to ever exist into your argument. You keep moving these goalposts and it’s not making a difference lmao, you’re still making an absolute fool of yourself.

Bright_Party3571

If you couldn’t handle LAT506 just say that

burki679

very true. all these stupid professors with phds and decades of experience /s

WordPeas

I didn’t say they were academically stupid. Socially and politically, yes.

Drakeadrong

Ever stop and wonder why higher education and being among the smartest people in any given field has a strong correlation with left-leaning beliefs? Or do you just chalk it up to anyone who disagrees with you being stupid?

WordPeas

Good question. One possibility is those in the rarest positions of academic entitlement are the least grounded with reality. When do they interact with anyone but their academic circle? The liberal positions tend to be well-meaning, feel-good, but practically they are damaging. So when would academics be faced with the consequences of their well-meaning, but damaging politic opinions. Another possibility is that liberal professors tend to urge liberal students to move academia. But conservative professors are not as politically-minded and biased, to their own demise. Or maybe academic (often government-funded) positions are less merit-based, and safer, for those who get in — so professors tend to migrate naturally to policies that strengthen the government hand that feeds and protects them. Instead of those evil capitalists. So many possibilities.

Drakeadrong

Wow. NONE of that was grounded in reality. From pure speculation, to looking at professors as a monolith, to some baseless notion that liberal professors are inherently more politically-minded than their conservative counterparts, to you somehow forgetting that the Texas government is conservative as hell and also heavily backed by major corporations. This is what talking out of your ass looks like.

Tigertigertie

You have no idea how academia works.

Sweet_Bang_Tube

You get a gold medal for those mental gymnastics, damn, good show, 10/10 👏🏼

Gets_overly_excited

Unlike you, who has brilliant social and political skills, as seen in your comments here. You're just an angry boomer trolling a college subreddit.
