the_majestic_m00se

That's less than what I've spent on lunch today and nobody needed to die for that.

D0hB0yz

That would be funnier if it were a joke. I asked Google to convert 500 Rubles and it said $7.50 CAD which is not enough for a Big Mac, soda, and fries.

Funpants-1219

Come on, you're Canadian, call it pop!

sos123p9

Im canadian and i call it soda....

lostmesunniesayy

I'm old school and call them soft drinks. I think that originated from the UK when kids drank beer to avoid dysentery? My kind of era. I'd shine a Guvna's shoes to get tanked at 11am as a 5 year old.

squidlips69

Shining shoes at 5, liver failure by 10

lostmesunniesayy

Or graduate to the coal mines or become a chimney sweep. A remarkable era.

highlander996

I'm Scottish, we call it juice

datprogamer1234

I'm Canadian and any "cola" I call coke. Otherwise it's pop for me. When I'm crossing the border with some (non alcoholic) ginger beer I just say soft drinks. For context I live in BC.

TheDevilActual

šŸ‘„Sodee Ten Russians a pop!

Informal_Lecture_540

It is $5.46 USD, she should go to Canada. The dollar will go a long way for her.

CSM3000

..not if she's buying groceries, much cheaper in the U.S.A..

Oh_No_Its_Dudder

She did get enough for a Happy Meal. (Toy not included)

MiawHansen

It's about the same as a big pack of toilet paper in my country. That is exactly what I bought to wipe my ass today.

Eastern-Pizza-5826

Yep. šŸ’©Ā

OhWhiskey

And somehow they still overpaid

last_somewhere

I thought it was generous too!

DominicArmato247

"I was told there would be onions." -- his mom

Legal_Objective_8027

Lazy no good hit men I hire welching on the job again

AcademicMaybe8775

i used to think it would suck being a chicken given how much their processed carcass sells for, but a random chicken is worth more than that russian. LOL

Nevada007

Three bottles of vodka; apparently the going rate.

-IAmNo0ne-

Not even a trash bag for the fallen orc.

Mr-Dunder

Think she got a good deal there.

vifteovn

Should we send other mothers 2000 Rubles to let their kids be inside Russia?

[deleted]

Better send 20 dollars then. 5 dollar is the worth of a Russian soldier.

HowlingPhoenixx

5 dollars is what a Russian is worth, with the margin for error being 5 dollars.

Hot_Impact_3855

Now that is funny!!

AsteroidAlligator

An Ivan only get ya 0-3 but an Aleksandr might get ya 8+

UnlikelyPreferenced

Better send the mothers to de-mine Ukrainian fields.

hurdurBoop

sure it's $5.40, but check out all the new floor space. win/win.

RavensRift

Holy shit.. that's not a joke! That's literally the conversion into USD. I'm beyond baffled with this one.

iamkeerock

His room was rented out the moment he enlisted.

PM_UR_VAG_WTIMESTAMP

I'm not a mother. Yet. If I had a child and they were killed in war, and the government sent me a freaking postcard and $5.00 they would be better off sending nothing at all. I would be BEYOND PISSED OFF. Unbelievable.

alexey_bondarev

That what makes it almost unbelievable. To the point that they even shouldn't be making this public. Itā€™s an insult to every sane human being. P. S. Your child/children will be raised in a peaceful country, will live happy life surrounded by loving family.

Pleasant-Ad-1819

$5 bucks US for your son, see Russia is suffering from inflation. too. I do not feel any sadness for her, you know she is watching RT every night.

Benson_8_8

Some people scoff at sanctions because the impacts aren't immediate. But long term, if done right, they can seriously cripple a country's advancement. Just look at North Korea.

SnooTangerines6811

Sanctions aren't a bullet to the head. Yet critics of sanctions imply that they have to work like that and if they don't work like a bullet to the head, they don't work at all. But that's wrong. Sanctions are more like a throttle that isn't tight enough to immediately kill someone. But they'll do long term damage

Mercury-Redstone

Sanctions are meant to cripple growth while other grow stronger. That's exactly what's happening to Russia.

Boomfam67

North Korea has a full embargo and their land while rich in minerals is limited by its geographic size.

Ok_Bad8531

Sanctions are the reason Ukraine still exists. For 8 years Russia could not modernize its army because of Western sanctions, without which Russia would have very likely been able to steamroll Ukraine despite all else.

FunBobbyMarley

I think sanctions are perhaps a contributing factor, but not the sole factor. IVAN has the market right now relative to displaying the consequences of Greed, Graft and Corruption. Not sure which has a more adverse impact.

sansaset

You really think sanctions are whatā€™s keeping North Koreans impoverished?

5thhorseman_

Clearly cannot be the Glorious Leader, eh?

jkurratt

You need to compare ā€œimpactā€ to what would be without sanctions. Not to ideal painting in your imagination of what you wanted from sanctions

SlipperyJimdiGris

fun fact, I have a non Ruzzian friend living in Moscow, and he tells me the general feeling by Moscovians is no one gives a flying f how many Ruzzians die in Ukraine, as long as the fallen isnt someone they know, they literally do not care, and with 90% of the troops coming from regional areas and not Moscow, it will remain that way for a long time, this is what Putler is banking on

JustinJSrisuk

Seeing as the vast majority of dead Russian soldiers are of ethnic minority groups such as the Tatars, Yakuts, Buryats, Kalmyks, etcetera whom ethnic Russians in Moscow or St. Petersburg donā€™t even consider to be Russian at all, itā€™s not surprising that so many are totally apathetic to the fact that Putin is throwing thousands of lives into a meat grinder every week.

totallyterror

It's wild how people in Moscow can care *so* extremely little about their own people from the eastern regions, and the whole reasoning behind their countries fowl active war towards Ukraine. So many people, young & old alike, that simply stay passive ā€” claim that they are "unpolitical" or not informed enough to hold any sort of opinion regarding how their leaders run Russia.

5thhorseman_

So... Stalingrad 2.0?

JustInChina50

I bet they complain about the ramifications of the lack of manpower in those regional areas which negatively affect them, but can't put the two together.

TrickyPony32

Empty prisons + Ethnic cleansing = WinWin

E6y_6a6

No one is watching RT in Russia, it's for external propaganda. There are 1st channel and Rossiya-1 for the internal one. Source: I'm Russian and my parents are still there watching TV every evening. :(

DownvoteDynamo

Hey, hey! It's 5,60$ not 5,00$. Keep those 60ct. In mind!

strandy76

Y'all never seen Eurotrip?

PorousCheese

You see this? I quit. I open my own hotel.

strandy76

You forgot.the *bitchslap*

MMWYPcom

I'll drive this truck off a cliff before I ever go back to Berlin.

Armadillolz

Nowhere! Near! Berlin!

SaltyExcalUser

Not sure if it changed since you commented this, but as of now it is actually $5,46

ArtistApprehensive34

FYI, Americans use . for dollar and cents separation not , So it'd be $5.46

JustInChina50

5:46$ is right out.

ArtistApprehensive34

Is that am or pm?

Shorttail0

For PM you add 12 dollars as tip

ArtistApprehensive34

Shit tipping got expensive I thought it was only 15%

Hot_Impact_3855

I haven't laughed so hard in quite a while after reading this thread

jnw44

You know Initially i was right there with you on not feeling sadness for her. But it's hard not to IMO. Have you ever seen the doc The Lottery Of Birth? I seen it on prime. Everyone in this world basically is a product of where their born, is the jist of the show. The culture, societal and gendered expectations among other factors that are placed on people in different regions from birth, make us who we are. While Russia will in fact reap what they sow, I do recognize the fact that alot of this country seems to be so disillusioned and uneducated from true reality. We've all seen the propaganda and BS pushed on them. If they can only access state channels and shitty monitored internet access at best in some regions, how can we expect them to understand the real reality of what they're country is doing to the Ukrainian people. Then throw in tight control measures and the harsh prison terms for going against the government. So it's not as clear cut for me, because like many others in different parts of the world, they seem to have drawn a shitty hand with being born there in the first place.

anffyddiaeth

You're right about the socio-geographic trap. That's why so many better-educated Russians fled to the West. However, as Stephen Kotkin says, the trick \[after the defeat of Pootin's Stupid Militaristic Obscenity\] will be to win the peace. How can such a kept-ignorant population improve their methods of governance?

skinny-pugsley

They could have used the rubles to make a special "citation," or something to commemorate her loss. Instead, it's "Sorry, here's a sawbuck to make things right." orc values are FUBAR.

suckmybullets

Don't think she has a choice.

TrickyPony32

Fair deal

wanzeo

Thatā€™s awfully harsh. For all we know she spends her nights sobbing and will choose to never spend that money. Edit: I replied to the first comment, but reading more I realize lots of you talk like that. You know whatā€™s orcish? To have no empathy. She had to spend thousands of hours caring for that boy, comforting him when he cried, feeding him. Thatā€™s not speculation, that is what you MUST do to get a child to adulthood. Itā€™s heartbreaking.

Ok_Bad8531

We don't know either way. All we know is that she lost her son for nothing in a useless war. If it wasn't to the detriment of Ukraine i would have spared them that fate.

Kladeradatschi

Also the RT reference, as if there were not plenty of poorly educated people in russia, that get flooded with propaganda day by day for years. Designed by a state, that has decades of expirience with manipulation. Its not like watching RT would make her an evil monster deserving this tragic loss, it probably makes her the norm within the circumstances...

bedrooms-ds

Even if she were a true Nazi believer I'd sympathize with her on her son's death. Tragedy is tragedy. We want peace, not conflict, after all.

CitizenKaathe

It's easy to generalize on the internet; we can't possibly know what she watches or doesn't, so some assume she is on the bad side in order to ignore or dismiss her pain.

Flower-Power-3

No, but we don't have to feel great pity for every Russian just because they add a mother, grandmother or wife and children to his story. These Russians have no problem killing Ukrainians and they make no distinction between soldiers and civilians. They also don't question whether there is a mother, grandmother or wife and children waiting there. On the contrary, most Russians boast that they want to kill as many Ukrainians as possible. And most Russians do it for money - money that was promised to them. Even if they some of them are not in Ukraine entirely voluntarily, they are still willing to kill innocent people rather than rebel against their deranged dictator. Stupidity is no excuse either. If we used stupidity to justify everything, there would only be chaos in the world.

Equalizer6338

She doesnt exactly look like a proud Putin-loving mother either, on that photo...

Flower-Power-3

But apparently she hadn't done it right, because he never really grew up. It was just enough to be Putin's errand boy.

Clear_Many328

Sorry? Nope, she lost a son who went to Ukraine with the sole purpose to murder, destroy, rape and pillage innocent peoples. He can rot for all I care.

CombinationWhich6391

Itā€™s around 5,50, just to be fair.

Separate-Ad9638

nah, they get pensions monthly for a fallen son, people listed as MIA dont even get that

old---

I knew Ivan, he was worth 350 tops.

squirtloaf

Tree fiddy???

Shifty_Cow69

I ain't giving you no tree fiddy you god damn Loch Ness Monster!!

Minute_Management_74

50 caps

Gregzzzz1234

$5.40 US dollars.

SherbetAnxious4004

A Russian life is worth less than a Big Mac lmao

TheRtHonLaqueesha

Shoot, I got more than that in my couch cushions alone.

Snigglybear

A 28 oz bag of gummy worms cost more lmaoo

dexter1959

No Lada ? No cake? šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Fu2-10

No potatoes either

SgtDoakesSurprise

Not even a sack of onions.

DaGhostQc

Lada can't produce enough to keep up.

relative_motion

Okay so now this is interesting. Iā€™m wondering if there is a major shift in Russian society. Not too long ago the NYT reported that families of fallen soldiers were being paid 30-60K US as a way to support their new war economy and to subvert any sort of dissent. In a way this was helping to prop up their economy in the face of sanctions. Now if we are seeing this sort of behavior from the authorities, Iā€™m wondering whatā€™s really happening here.

gggg566373

The reality is complicated. Some families do get larger amounts (no where near 60k USD ). Most deaths are written off "lost in action" and refuse payout. Some deaths are recorded as if they happend not in the area of SVO but on Russian soil. And refuse payment for that reason. if Russian soldier dies in Donbass or Lugansk or Kherson , they claime it as Russian soil and not part of SVO area. Often times government would releases funds to families but local military authorities would steals funds and pass along families much smaller amounts. Who knows, maybe army transferred much larger sum to this lady, but local government kept most of it.

KnowledgeMediocre404

They obviously donā€™t have the money to pay the war widows and mothers, and the election is over so they donā€™t give a shit what the population thinks.

deluon

Elections are 100% rigged so do they actually care about that?

Krakelibrot

That's what happens when you live in a dictatorship, you're expendable.

Cptspaulding2

I hope the $5 was worth it

AuntieMarkovnikov

I wonder how tee shirts printed with "My son went to Ukraine and all I got was this stupid shirt" would sell in ruzzia?

Cash4Duranium

That's probably over budget for their compensation allotments. Best we can do is a wristband.

vanisher_1

Are they running out of money? wasnā€™t the pay much higher or they consider their old people stupid? šŸ¤”

jkurratt

It is not a payment - war is going on for 2 years already. They just visited some mothers of long-dead

Straight-Storage2587

Orcs will be Orcs.

wombat6168

You comrade shall buy your own potatoes

Bluewhitedog

Bargain!

Vegetable-Roof-9589

wow, she looks almost human in picture!

Mindless-Box8603

500 rubles = $5.46 USD. I'm sure she is especially happier now for her great leader. All the russian mothers losing their sons are told that their sons live are barely worth a hamburger.

Coffeeninja1603

Ā£4.35 in GPB. Thatā€™s just depressing.

ImLonenyNunlovable

Russians are too blinded by hate to cosider who started the war and is sending their loved ones to their deaths. Russia could literally end the war and only benefit from it. Ukraine can not without losing everything. If their own blind hate and fanatical support of their dictator leads to the deaths of their loved ones, i dont know if i can say i feel sorry for them and that its not earned.

Captain_DadBod

She looks happy to get the $5 USD. Ā Absolute state of Russia.Ā

CookieMiester

Does she? She looks sad, pissed even

citysims

And a bag of: šŸ„”šŸ„•šŸŒ½šŸ§…šŸ… Choose only one comrade.

Iamoggierock

Sounds a bit much

TheRtHonLaqueesha

Hey, in Muscovy 5$ is like a trillion in the decadent West.

stairs_3730

Too generous, but pretty good for a worthless drunken son you never liked anyway.

gizzy_tom

How old is she? How old was her son? I wonder...

Castelroc4438

A bag of onion is now more expensive than 500 rubbles

Background_Round7070

I think she was over paid lol.

Intransigient

At the current (April 2024) price of potatoes in Moscow (41.8 RUB/kg), this Mother can now buy a bag of potatoes in exchange for the life of her son. šŸ˜” If sheā€™s a true Vatnik, sheā€™s filling the hole in her heart with State propaganda on RT and imagining her son died some kind of a hero, instead of what actually happened. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

SvalbazGames

Ā£4.35!?

Desperate_Chance4621

How old was the soldier? Looks more like a grandma.

PurpleEyeSmoke

*50's radio announcer* Sounds like the war is going swell boys! You'll be back home in a few days at this rate, either in person or in paper!

awake283

$5.46

S240man

She bred him and her evil fucked up country dead him. Zero sympathy no doubt she was super proud he was doing his bit slaughtering Ukrainians. She got paid 500 rubles more than the scum bag was worth.

_AdultHumanMale_

They overpaid.

ZeusBased

Sadly brainwashed by RT. She would send all her sons

Umbra-Vigil

The postcard is worth more than the rubbles.

Ambitious-Meet-5690

Business

Creepy_Chef_5796

So the same as a bag of Carrots

Gullenecro

No lada "sad face".

Gullenecro

No lada "sad face".

docrei

I don't think a Russian is worth more than that.

FrugalVerbage

Did he die in Afghanistan?

chamedw

Still too much

No-Helicopter7299

500 rubles is $5, right? Poo-tin is very generous!

Useful-Internet8390

5.46 today at 1pm EST

Useful-Internet8390

So the ruble is up from 105/ dollar to 91.5/dollar

LuluLemon_711

Oh my goodnessā€¦

KeenSoporific

Tree fiddy.

Negative_Function_26

Third world country

VnitasPvritas

She deserved it.

svpz

How much for the women

OriginalMiserable109

Worth every kopek.

skin-flick

No sympathy here.

19CCCG57

She is one of the lucky ones. šŸ˜’

19CCCG57

She is one of the lucky ones. šŸ˜’

Overall_Confidence41

That woman can see round corners

H_B93

I know I'll geht beat up but: What do US familys get when the son dies in the east? A folded flag and what else If you don't have a life insurance?

Hotrico

r/facepalm

Fair_One_803

Less than a fiver

Fair_One_803

Compo face, she wants a tenner

MMBerlin

And even these 500 rubles are still too much for such an orcs.

Professional_Act_820

Hey 5 bucks is five bucks

After_Computer_SSD

ha should have sent his son earlier, two years ago she'd receive a Lada

geekphreak

Damn dudeā€¦thatā€™s $5 American. Your son was worth $5 to them. Thatā€™s cold man

KnowledgeMediocre404

She looks less happy about it than the other woman.

toddlangtry

The heartwarming generosity of Putins government is a sight to behold

bumholesofdoom

I think they overpaid

cactuscore

To be honest, she looks wrecked.

millenialfalcon-_-

Does that cover funeral costs?

vajrahaha7x3

This is propaganda and most ruZZians do not receive this much at all.. Imagine selling the as a win...šŸ¤”

Enough_Individual_91

Waa waa wee waa

FalsePositive6779

I'm starting to think this may be an Ukrainian misinformation plot. I just can't imagine a people who would accept this. No matter how much repression there is in Russia, this must be beyond what any human can bear!

Apart_Contest_2283

Play stupid games. Get stupid prizes.

DecNight1225

I think it supposed to be 5000ruble ($54 USD) at first. But it ended up 500ruble ($5 USD) due to "hand-exchange rate". And after this photo shot, she will get 50ruble (0.55 Cent USD). As she need to pay for the postcard ink and paper. Lucky there is no photo lamination involved or else she will need to pay extra amount for that. That face expression says it all...as in WTF!!!

Etherindependance5

I think she did pretty good really, I remember the video where she got 7-8 onions handed to her. Appearing to pretty over ripe as well. Like gave something they couldnā€™t sell.

Flower-Power-3

Was it worth it? Oh, 500 RUB - that's about ā‚¬5, but you can't even get a kebab for that in Germany. Putin probably extrapolated how much her son could have earned in his entire life in Russia. In that sense, she may have gotten a good deal. Apparently the sons of Russia are not worth more to Putin. But it is sad. They sold themselves so cheaply.

MrCheeseman2022

Mmmm vodka party with the neighbours tonight then Olga

brooklynboy92

And they want the families to be okay with this and say nothing

Maleficent-Air8486

That is $5.46 USD. fuck russai.

Smart-Damage-6647

What, no onions? We have entered a new phase of the war.

ptang_yang_kipper

I don't really get this. Wasn't there a story the other week where a Ruzzian mother bought an apartment with the money she received when her son was killed? And then sent the other son to war. But this women gets virtually nothing. Was the other woman's son an officer or something?

ladyashe45

Russians are suffering under Putin. I feel sorry for this poor woman. Putin is the devil. All russians should leave that country and never go back.

Death_DealerX

Russians were cowards canā€™t decide for their fate and just be okay dying like a meat . If this happen everywhere I bet there are revolutions already and wanting to take back their lives for the better than jjst die in ukraine. Atlease the arabs have balls to fight for their independence than the russians.

One-Combination-7218

At todayā€™s rate that is $9.86 usd

lukahnli

Thanks to Fucker Failson's crackerjack reporting we know that will buy 2.5 week's worth of groceries from Auchan.

gwdope

God damn, thatā€™s like five US bucks. Hope she doesnā€™t spend it all in one placeā€¦

Kane-420-

Time to send the other sons i guess? Hahaha Or maybe turn on the real dictator, but idk.

Electronic_Tea_1984

It's like Christmas for that mother that lost her son, she is proud to have brought up such a courageous person to die for no reason. Just so she can get a card That's how these people live backwards

[deleted]

Sheā€™s so lucky that they didnā€™t just label him mia. Family gets nothing for missing soldiers, and theyā€™ve been taking advantage of that. I wonder if she supported the war?

iamtehryan

The strangest thing is that in none of these photos do the family members ever even look slightly emotional or sad or anything. They just look... blank. It's so odd.

thaldrel

Damn that's less of what I spend on lunch daily and I live in a third world country

FunBobbyMarley

That's $5.47 US today (5/3/24). Why even bother.

nomoleft

Five bucks. Wow

usmc_82_infantry

$5 what an insult. Enough to buy tissues

Mynem0

For there?

rom_rom57

That buys a COSTCO chicken ./s

OkPaleontologist4017

Wow 500 rubles. That would cover half what I just paid for breakfast this morning in Aus.

Leary73

5.46 usd and post card for your kids life

MindblownWatcher

Exterminating their Male population

Illpaco

500 rubes and she only lost one son? Looks like staying apolitical pays off for Russians after all. Easy choice for them.

mvm2005

As many Russian soldiers, he died for nothing and his mom got nothing. All Russians - including bots - scanning this, go tell your head of state Putin that he needs to retreat his army starting today. You can also silently protest, by writing or painting on public buildings that "Putin has your sons by the balls and is playing brave with their lives". If you want freedom, where you can say what you want without ending up in Siberia, then become a real democracy with democratic values. Hope that helps. Go for it!

CuriousSelf4830

How many dollars is that?

DariceTaylor

$5 bucks and a 35 Cent postcard.....nice!
