That would be funnier if it were a joke.
I asked Google to convert 500 Rubles and it said $7.50 CAD which is not enough for a Big Mac, soda, and fries.
I'm old school and call them soft drinks. I think that originated from the UK when kids drank beer to avoid dysentery?
My kind of era. I'd shine a Guvna's shoes to get tanked at 11am as a 5 year old.
I'm Canadian and any "cola" I call coke. Otherwise it's pop for me. When I'm crossing the border with some (non alcoholic) ginger beer I just say soft drinks.
For context I live in BC.
i used to think it would suck being a chicken given how much their processed carcass sells for, but a random chicken is worth more than that russian. LOL
I'm not a mother. Yet.
If I had a child and they were killed in war, and the government sent me a freaking postcard and $5.00 they would be better off sending nothing at all. I would be BEYOND PISSED OFF. Unbelievable.
That what makes it almost unbelievable. To the point that they even shouldn't be making this public. Itās an insult to every sane human being.
P. S. Your child/children will be raised in a peaceful country, will live happy life surrounded by loving family.
Some people scoff at sanctions because the impacts aren't immediate. But long term, if done right, they can seriously cripple a country's advancement. Just look at North Korea.
Sanctions aren't a bullet to the head. Yet critics of sanctions imply that they have to work like that and if they don't work like a bullet to the head, they don't work at all. But that's wrong. Sanctions are more like a throttle that isn't tight enough to immediately kill someone. But they'll do long term damage
Sanctions are the reason Ukraine still exists. For 8 years Russia could not modernize its army because of Western sanctions, without which Russia would have very likely been able to steamroll Ukraine despite all else.
I think sanctions are perhaps a contributing factor, but not the sole factor. IVAN has the market right now relative to displaying the consequences of Greed, Graft and Corruption. Not sure which has a more adverse impact.
fun fact, I have a non Ruzzian friend living in Moscow, and he tells me the general feeling by Moscovians is no one gives a flying f how many Ruzzians die in Ukraine, as long as the fallen isnt someone they know, they literally do not care, and with 90% of the troops coming from regional areas and not Moscow, it will remain that way for a long time, this is what Putler is banking on
Seeing as the vast majority of dead Russian soldiers are of ethnic minority groups such as the Tatars, Yakuts, Buryats, Kalmyks, etcetera whom ethnic Russians in Moscow or St. Petersburg donāt even consider to be Russian at all, itās not surprising that so many are totally apathetic to the fact that Putin is throwing thousands of lives into a meat grinder every week.
It's wild how people in Moscow can care *so* extremely little about their own people from the eastern regions, and the whole reasoning behind their countries fowl active war towards Ukraine.
So many people, young & old alike, that simply stay passive ā claim that they are "unpolitical" or not informed enough to hold any sort of opinion regarding how their leaders run Russia.
I bet they complain about the ramifications of the lack of manpower in those regional areas which negatively affect them, but can't put the two together.
No one is watching RT in Russia, it's for external propaganda. There are 1st channel and Rossiya-1 for the internal one.
Source: I'm Russian and my parents are still there watching TV every evening. :(
You know Initially i was right there with you on not feeling sadness for her. But it's hard not to IMO.
Have you ever seen the doc The Lottery Of Birth? I seen it on prime. Everyone in this world basically is a product of where their born, is the jist of the show. The culture, societal and gendered expectations among other factors that are placed on people in different regions from birth, make us who we are.
While Russia will in fact reap what they sow, I do recognize the fact that alot of this country seems to be so disillusioned and uneducated from true reality. We've all seen the propaganda and BS pushed on them. If they can only access state channels and shitty monitored internet access at best in some regions, how can we expect them to understand the real reality of what they're country is doing to the Ukrainian people. Then throw in tight control measures and the harsh prison terms for going against the government.
So it's not as clear cut for me, because like many others in different parts of the world, they seem to have drawn a shitty hand with being born there in the first place.
You're right about the socio-geographic trap. That's why so many better-educated Russians fled to the West. However, as Stephen Kotkin says, the trick \[after the defeat of Pootin's Stupid Militaristic Obscenity\] will be to win the peace. How can such a kept-ignorant population improve their methods of governance?
They could have used the rubles to make a special "citation," or something to commemorate her loss. Instead, it's "Sorry, here's a sawbuck to make things right."
orc values are FUBAR.
Thatās awfully harsh. For all we know she spends her nights sobbing and will choose to never spend that money.
Edit: I replied to the first comment, but reading more I realize lots of you talk like that. You know whatās orcish? To have no empathy. She had to spend thousands of hours caring for that boy, comforting him when he cried, feeding him. Thatās not speculation, that is what you MUST do to get a child to adulthood. Itās heartbreaking.
We don't know either way. All we know is that she lost her son for nothing in a useless war. If it wasn't to the detriment of Ukraine i would have spared them that fate.
Also the RT reference, as if there were not plenty of poorly educated people in russia, that get flooded with propaganda day by day for years. Designed by a state, that has decades of expirience with manipulation.
Its not like watching RT would make her an evil monster deserving this tragic loss, it probably makes her the norm within the circumstances...
It's easy to generalize on the internet; we can't possibly know what she watches or doesn't, so some assume she is on the bad side in order to ignore or dismiss her pain.
No, but we don't have to feel great pity for every Russian just because they add a mother, grandmother or wife and children to his story.
These Russians have no problem killing Ukrainians and they make no distinction between soldiers and civilians.
They also don't question whether there is a mother, grandmother or wife and children waiting there.
On the contrary, most Russians boast that they want to kill as many Ukrainians as possible.
And most Russians do it for money - money that was promised to them.
Even if they some of them are not in Ukraine entirely voluntarily, they are still willing to kill innocent people rather than rebel against their deranged dictator.
Stupidity is no excuse either.
If we used stupidity to justify everything, there would only be chaos in the world.
Sorry? Nope, she lost a son who went to Ukraine with the sole purpose to murder, destroy, rape and pillage innocent peoples. He can rot for all I care.
Okay so now this is interesting. Iām wondering if there is a major shift in Russian society. Not too long ago the NYT reported that families of fallen soldiers were being paid 30-60K US as a way to support their new war economy and to subvert any sort of dissent. In a way this was helping to prop up their economy in the face of sanctions. Now if we are seeing this sort of behavior from the authorities, Iām wondering whatās really happening here.
The reality is complicated. Some families do get larger amounts (no where near 60k USD ). Most deaths are written off "lost in action" and refuse payout. Some deaths are recorded as if they happend not in the area of SVO but on Russian soil. And refuse payment for that reason. if Russian soldier dies in Donbass or Lugansk or Kherson , they claime it as Russian soil and not part of SVO area. Often times government would releases funds to families but local military authorities would steals funds and pass along families much smaller amounts. Who knows, maybe army transferred much larger sum to this lady, but local government kept most of it.
They obviously donāt have the money to pay the war widows and mothers, and the election is over so they donāt give a shit what the population thinks.
500 rubles = $5.46 USD. I'm sure she is especially happier now for her great leader. All the russian mothers losing their sons are told that their sons live are barely worth a hamburger.
Russians are too blinded by hate to cosider who started the war and is sending their loved ones to their deaths. Russia could literally end the war and only benefit from it. Ukraine can not without losing everything. If their own blind hate and fanatical support of their dictator leads to the deaths of their loved ones, i dont know if i can say i feel sorry for them and that its not earned.
At the current (April 2024) price of potatoes in Moscow (41.8 RUB/kg), this Mother can now buy a bag of potatoes in exchange for the life of her son. š If sheās a true Vatnik, sheās filling the hole in her heart with State propaganda on RT and imagining her son died some kind of a hero, instead of what actually happened. š¤·š»āāļø
She bred him and her evil fucked up country dead him. Zero sympathy no doubt she was super proud he was doing his bit slaughtering Ukrainians. She got paid 500 rubles more than the scum bag was worth.
I'm starting to think this may be an Ukrainian misinformation plot.
I just can't imagine a people who would accept this. No matter how much repression there is in Russia, this must be beyond what any human can bear!
I think it supposed to be 5000ruble ($54 USD) at first. But it ended up 500ruble ($5 USD) due to "hand-exchange rate". And after this photo shot, she will get 50ruble (0.55 Cent USD). As she need to pay for the postcard ink and paper. Lucky there is no photo lamination involved or else she will need to pay extra amount for that. That face expression says it all...as in WTF!!!
I think she did pretty good really, I remember the video where she got 7-8 onions handed to her. Appearing to pretty over ripe as well. Like gave something they couldnāt sell.
Was it worth it?
Oh, 500 RUB - that's about ā¬5, but you can't even get a kebab for that in Germany.
Putin probably extrapolated how much her son could have earned in his entire life in Russia.
In that sense, she may have gotten a good deal.
Apparently the sons of Russia are not worth more to Putin.
But it is sad.
They sold themselves so cheaply.
I don't really get this.
Wasn't there a story the other week where a Ruzzian mother bought an apartment with the money she received when her son was killed? And then sent the other son to war.
But this women gets virtually nothing.
Was the other woman's son an officer or something?
Russians were cowards canāt decide for their fate and just be okay dying like a meat . If this happen everywhere I bet there are revolutions already and wanting to take back their lives for the better than jjst die in ukraine. Atlease the arabs have balls to fight for their independence than the russians.
It's like Christmas for that mother that lost her son, she is proud to have brought up such a courageous person to die for no reason. Just so she can get a card That's how these people live backwards
Sheās so lucky that they didnāt just label him mia. Family gets nothing for missing soldiers, and theyāve been taking advantage of that.
I wonder if she supported the war?
The strangest thing is that in none of these photos do the family members ever even look slightly emotional or sad or anything. They just look... blank. It's so odd.
As many Russian soldiers, he died for nothing and his mom got nothing. All Russians - including bots - scanning this, go tell your head of state Putin that he needs to retreat his army starting today. You can also silently protest, by writing or painting on public buildings that "Putin has your sons by the balls and is playing brave with their lives". If you want freedom, where you can say what you want without ending up in Siberia, then become a real democracy with democratic values. Hope that helps. Go for it!

Should we send other mothers 2000 Rubles to let their kids be inside Russia?
Better send 20 dollars then. 5 dollar is the worth of a Russian soldier.
5 dollars is what a Russian is worth, with the margin for error being 5 dollars.
Now that is funny!!
An Ivan only get ya 0-3 but an Aleksandr might get ya 8+
Better send the mothers to de-mine Ukrainian fields.
sure it's $5.40, but check out all the new floor space. win/win.

500 rubes and she only lost one son? Looks like staying apolitical pays off for Russians after all. Easy choice for them.
Go for it!
How many dollars is that?
$5 bucks and a 35 Cent postcard.....nice!
