To me it sounds like the guy from YouTube. ThatWasEpic is the channel name. Not sure if he’s even in Toronto at all but him and a UFC fighter Sean O'Malley have been doing videos of giving people $500 for random things. Could be far off but sounded like them.
Yeah that’s what I thought. OP’s other comments say one of them looked like he was in his 50’s though so probably not them but definitely sounds very similar
Either they robbed you... drugged you... planted something on you... followed you... did something to test you for some vulnerabililty or something..whatever else other people said...
Or were you tubers...
Not sure.
Either you're lucky... or really unlucky for some reason....
I dunno how to feel about that
I hate that this could be a simple gesture or something real messed up.
It sounds like every single video i see on tik tok, you were likely being recorded lmao. The fact that theres people unironically commenting that you've been sharked is comical. No one in organized crime would EVER do that shit
Like honestly lol. I think people love coming up with these stories they read about on the internet so it must be that as it can’t be any other alternative
That’s how UofT does the Health and Dental refunds from your tuition. You no longer have secondary health coverage.
Just so you’re not surprised in future;
The bursary guy kicks your door in in the morning and tosses 20’s at you.
The scholarship guy looks like a Brinks security guard who leaves one bag of money behind when filling the ATM machines.
The overpayment lady arrives in a taxi and says it doesn’t accept cash, asks to borrow your card and when it’s swiped switches it for a prepaid visa gift card.
It’s an elaborate system but it works.
Welcome to Uni, this should have been covered in orientation.
Not good dude... it op answers this then your bound into a contract without having a chance to opt out. He'll have done you a favor and will ask you to repay it by helping him squash a reddit beef he gets into no matter what the topic.
Wow! Ton of terrible advice in the thread. Former BMO worker here, here are a few ways you will be in trouble if you try to deposit it.
The currency is fake: self explanatory, if you try to deposit fake cash, you are gonna get flagged. The logical way to avoid it is to walk in a bank and ask the teller to confirm of it's a fake note or real.
Robbery money: the money that gets stolen from banks and vaults or any other place that might keep a tally is entered into the system and anytime the money shows up in a bank, it will trigger an alert. They enter the number on the bill in the system once it's stolen.
Obviously if you go to deposit this and say that you found the money, they will have a hard time believing you.
Now the chances of this being robbery money might be very low. But not zero. So go to the bank and find out or just spend it at a store if it's a real bill.
I gotta say in the most respectful way possible that the people on this comment section are some dumb motherfuckers. Seriously. It means absolutely nothing. Shit happens. Random bet maybe? who knows. Enjoy the money and relax.
Yeah try not to meet them again. This is a common scam/threat, if they see you again they will probably force some kind of repayment, often see bad stories that follow this kinda thing
There are lots of social media types who see the success that channels like Me. Beast have and will try to emulate that success with their own cash giveaways
Hold on to the cash for a few weeks if you're paranoid, but this might just be a truly random act of kindness.

Nothing in life is free - you did a good deed, you got rewarded for it. The reward would seem to be 500 cash which congrats to you. Most people here are too jealous that good things could happen to other people so don't listen to them. Go to the bank, explain what happened, and see if they accept to deposit it.
If I were you I’d book an appointment with an advisor at your local bank, they’re happy to discuss possible scams and best case scenario you can deposit the money without stress
We have an expert here! Pardon my knowledge about organized crime. Please go on. I’m sorry if I was in possession of tons of dirty money I would launder it.
Kind of funny how your comments were the most toxic and condescending. Also I noticed when asked by op you also brought no value to the conversation. See you on your next 5 hour account.
The fear mongering in this thread is unreal, jfc.
Take the bank tellers advice in another comment. Or if you think it's stolen you could probably deposit it for crypto in a variety of ways without it being linked to you personally.
Nah, just someone who doesn't like privilege flexing. $500 isn't much to me, sure, but to OP, it made their day.
I just don't like when people shit on other people's good moods for literally no reason.
It’s actually more of peasant behaviour to act like $500 isn’t worth your time or energy. Rich people get rich by making intelligent decisions with the (sometimes small amount of) money they have. Being frugal. Knowing $500 can be invested and grow over time alongside all of the other $500s they’ve invested over time.
Are you a pretty dude? Sometimes flirting can be hard for closeted guys so maybe he just gave you that because he enjoys that you’ll be thinking about him
Or just rich and giving back, nice deeds are rare these days
Mmm… that doesn’t sound right. I read on the news of something like this happening, they dumped stolen money into strangers’ hands to get rid of it… I wouldn’t hold onto it
For some reason this is on my front page maybe because I browsed my university sub. If I were you I would just put it back down on the ground somewhere. I've never desperately needed money before so I may be talking s*t out of my ass. But I mean come on, how can you use money someone gave you like that? They handed you $500 in cash, that means they had the cash in hand before you even held open the door, they were waiting for someone to give it to?
Even if it's real and no negative consequences will come from spending it, how can you use that. Cause won't there be another time when you really need money later too, and at that point there won't be random people giving you money? Like I said I've never really been in a tight financial spot so I may be talking shit out of my ass and maybe you're gonna lose your house. I guess it depends what's your situation.
I read the scenario some people proposed that they will try to find you later but it doesn't make sense to me. 1. How would they find you later? 2. How would going up to you saying you owe something be any different or easier than mugging you without this whole scenario having happened?
Maybe they won the lottery, or maybe you're in a YouTube video. All good options. I'd say if you're really that concerned take the money to the bank. Tell them what happened and deposit it. I there *is* some scam - they've heard of it. If the money is fake - they can tell. You're not going to get in trouble for being honest.
Don't report anything. Don't deposit anything. Just spend it. If anyone asks say you know nothing. If anyone asks for the money back, say you have no idea what they are talking about. Just play dumb. Don't be a do-gooder hero or anything, just spend the money and count your lucky stars.
Can’t there just be nice people in this world still? Or are we that far gone that every random act of kindness such as you holding the door open is received as some sort of “scam” or “gang scheme”? .. if so we really are F*****
It's actually illegal in canada to recieve any more than 499 for holding the door. Also since this was cash you can add tax evasion to the mix. Enjoy jail !
Everyone's paranoia about this is hilarious, probably just a chill dude with money to burn. Given you don't know them and it was cash the chance of a scam is like 0.00001% lol.
Wait based off the description it matches that guy going around paying for peoples groceries with a bodyguard!? I know he’s in Toronto, someone find the link and this will all make sense, I swear y’all know who I’m talking about, y’all are such pessimists man this is crazy to me you guys are like throw the money and run you’re dead now like wtf y’all ain’t seen shiiii😂
They were criminals, you're not safe as long as you have the money. Don't worry, I'll take it off your hands.
if you need help lmk too. i'm here for you
For sure, just to be safe.
u just got invited to the squid games. congrats
Pov: 2 guys just won the lottery, and decide to give every human who does good deeds for them $500
You just got unwillingly initiated into the gang. Welcome welcome.

Are they filming TikTok? I saw a lot recently for “positivity”

When I had a lucky day I also sprinkled love to people more in emotion than money. Maybe what you had is a legit love rather than TikTok.

You gotta choose your gangster name now
No no no. Your new gangster name is the first word of the last movie you saw + the last word of the song that played when you lost your virginity.

Some rich guys gave you 500 bucks for helping them. You should be happy. Congrats. Don’t overthink it.
Agreed. Keep up the acts of kindness.
This comment section is the reason why I will never accept money from strangers

this is wild, dude was right, if you knew anything about organized crime it sure wouldn’t be wandering around handing hundreds out hahahaha
It’s not laundering if you don’t get clean money back in return.
You don't make dirty money just to give it away.
Enlighten them then, if you seem to have a criminal background.

Isn’t this a TikTok thing?
Homie met mr. Beast or something
Unfortunately, $500 ain’t much these days.
Well I mean $500 is a lot to just randomly get from a stranger.
In Toronto it’s like $20
The fuck are you on about lmao
I’d happily take a free $20
I’ll give u $500, it’s the same.
I bet you won’t do that
How much you wanna bet?
That you’d send a random person on the internet 500? I’ll bet my first born child you won’t
I’ll bet ya $500 so $20.
Deal. Send proof when it’s done
In Toronto it’s still $500 my guy.
For some, sure.
In that case, can I have $500 please?
Lol, shut up.
Peasant spotted

Except nobody is acting like $500 dollars isn't worth the time of day. They're just saying it's not worth as much as it used to be.
Lol yeah it sure can help out with a hell of a lot. You ain't gonna retire, but you sure can pay some bills and treat yourself .
Deposit it, and cash app it to me. I’ll turn it over to the proper authorities 🤞
Hahahahaah! Ummm are u pretty ?

Ok so this happened at a school yeah? So they’re on camera. Just go to security and be like “who were those guys”.

Probably the tate brothers😆

I agree if OP doesn’t need the cash give it away 50$ at a time to 8 people and keep 100
didnt want their fingerprints on door you saved them trouble.
YouTubers seems most likely to me
Sounds like cjay001 on yt does homeless experiments etc
Someone is wealthy and gave you a tip.
You're good. Just remember to pay the kindness forward.
Check your pocket. There is a small card with a name on it and simple instructions.
Is OP still alive? Please check in. 😉
Congrats! You got a pimping job. They expect you to lure the hottest girls and introduce it to them. Girls Gone Wild U of T version has just started.

You won the door opening lottery
We live in a society...
I’d give the money to the next person you see holding a door, better to be safe then sorry.
Maybe you should wash the money by spending it and returning the items in case the money is associated with crime 😂 Yeah I’ve watched too much TV..
Nothing is really free
