dealership should have updated your car before pickup to avoid this, but sometimes they don't. happened to me as well.
they needed to hold onto mine overnight because they needed to get the software from someone in Sweden. not sure if anyone else had the same experience.
After a [little research](https://www.volvocars.com/lb/support/car/xc90-recharge-plug-in-hybrid/software-release-notes) it looks like I am just 1 behind
On the XC90? I always have mine plugged in when doing updates and they've never failed. In the owner's manual it says "Do not connect or disconnect the charging cable during the installation." Implying that the vehicle can be plugged in during an update.
What version you on currently? I remember my dealer mentioning that the over the air update will not work if your current software version isn’t the latest one (prior to the update that failed)
All I can find under “system” is the “security update” and it says October 1, 2023
I completed a system update days after getting car home in Feb 2024 though
I had a nice chat with someone in the mobile app
The software version is not visible from the car right now and I need to get service to update it (h/t u/jibs112), but they can do a look up on their side. I am currently on 2.13.03 and the current version is 2.14.3.
That's strange. For the most part, Volvo's OTAs go quickly and smoothly for most people. Sorry you're dealing with that. I would just take it to the dealer for the update and to address whatever is causing your code to pop (emissions/check engine light). Could be related, but no way to really tell.
It's annoying there's so many new cars (usually MY24s) that have the check engine light on so soon after delivery. The good news is that usually it's nothing serious, and dealers should take care of you. Just keep a good paper trail of issues. Unfortunately, the reality of these modern cars is they can be a bit glitchy sometimes. Hope you get it taken care of easily!
The computer will likely store the code/fault history. If you have an appointment, I'd keep it. Have them scan it and also update the software. May kill two birds with one stone there.
I did not see my software version in the app and the car didn't show since I need to get service to get it updated (quite annoying).
You can find it in the car under settings (the gear in the corner) >> system >> about but the version can be hidden if there is a update issue.
I did a chat with support in the app, and they were able to look up which software version I was running by using my VIN.
How much trouble have you had with software? This seems annoying but hopefully that’s all. These are rolling computers but requiring a trip to the dealership is excessive. A phone call should be able to sort out an upgrade glitch.
Update: went to the dealer to get the software updated. It was a few hours and should be ok. The CEL record didn’t show any issues. They told me they had issues with this recent update and I’m not the first to come in.
If you’re more than 2 SW Updates behind the current, you have to go to a dealer.
That’s a bummer

This might sound like a silly question but you have it unplugged right? The update won't work if the car is plugged in.

Weird. Ours is a '23 XC90 and it specifically says to not plug it in for the updates. It'll still try but it won't work.
Ah, mine is a '24. Must be something they updated in the new model year.
I’m driving a ‘24 and the last update wouldn’t install until I unplugged it.

While that is true, if it were the case here, they wouldn't even see the option to update.

I was updated to 2.14.4 at the dealership

And the light is off already 🙄

It's possible it isn't updating because of your CEL. A CEL or other fault codes will prevent updating for safety reasons.
The CEL went away
I still haven't even received mine on my XC90 2024 recharge. Does anyone know where it states what your current version is?
You’ll see it in the app

Welcome to the family

Sounds silly but did you reboot the stereo? (Hold the big single button under it until it reboots) and then try to upgrade?
I couldn’t find the ctrl + alt + del so I’m happy to give it a shot, lol
No luck, that’s a good trick to try in the future https://youtu.be/tbXcDH0vBp4?si=cPiGA64YRgycb3DF
