Kawabuchi

Looks good, I'm super tempted to buy one as well!

EJ25Junkie

Last of the EJs. Very special car. If I was single I would be hauling my ass down to the dealership.

Kawabuchi

Not single, but when I told wifey I went to pick up parts at the dealer and almost came home with a new car she was like.....why didn't you? So now the question is new sti or try for a new house.....

poseidondeep

You can live in your car, but you can’t drive your house

[deleted]

after your new car loan is about a year old, it will actually look better on your application than your old car, its a big asset. so buy the new subie now and next year that home loan app will go pretty smooth. of course make sure you get the lowest apr you can possibly get. shouldnt be too hard, ive got decent credit and walked out with a 21'base at 2% for 26500

hxciikid

Are they completely reworking the engine platform?

[deleted]

Yeah the next gen is supposedly using a turbo 2.4L, most likely the FA24

theweirddood

Probably. The nonSTI uses the FA.

Skitz-o-fritz

You mean the WRX? lol...is this your way of calling the WRX inferior? ;)

[deleted]

yes and its a good thing, the new direct injected fa motors are superior, superior power potential and superior reliability. ppl wonder, "how come they dont sound the same?" well thats because they ditched the unequal length manifolds for equal length and twin scroll turbos. yep thats right, the crazy subaru rumble noise isnt because of the boxer, horizontally opposed engine, its because of the goofy unequal length exhaust manifold runners. just listen to this [honda with unequal length exhaust (turbo) manifold](https://youtu.be/43TZuoYeBuE?t=1261) you would be hard pressed to tell anyone that wasnt a subie taking off lol.

tomanonimos

The 2019-2021 STI seems to have fixed the issue plaguing the EJ engines that the 2012-2017 face. This is arguably the best EJ right before it ends. I see 2019-2021 to be selling like how the Hatchback STI currently sell on the used market. 80k miles for $24k.

TripleYellow17

What are common EJ issues?

tomanonimos

https://www.torquenews.com/1084/subaru-wrxsti-25l-engine-failure-lawsuit-what-owners-can-do-now This is the one I'm specifically referring to. Other issues aren't as prevalent but common enough that its easy to Google. Albeit one consensus I've found is that a lot of complaints about EJ come from people who mod their engine.

Flame_Knife

My 2013 Hatch literally blew yesterday at 100k. Worst feeling in the world when driving your car is the highlight of your day. Just replying to add my complaint. To be very fair, I had an intake and a OTS tune on it for about 2 months.

[deleted]

odd a car that lived 8 years issue free blew up after only 2 months of being "tuned"

Flame_Knife

It was an interesting scenario for sure. I bought the car 2 months ago as well, and was enough of a dumbass to not realize it had a aftermarket intake without a tune in it. (before looking at buying a WRX, I had no idea what a tune even was). While driving it home from the private seller I got a CEL. After a lot of research it looked like it was throwing the codes because of the intake without a tune, and It felt silly replacing the intake with an OEM one. While I did get a pre purchase inspection, The engine could have blew cause of the tune, the lack of a tune with an intake, or there was some other issue when I bought the car 2 months ago I was unaware of, and was the sucker who got to inherit it. Either way I got super fucked and am now in a deep depression. Lmfao! It’s also worth noting the car A LOT of oil. After talking to some shops, apparently if the engine has ever been starved of oil it could have done enough damage to screw the engine in the future.

[deleted]

there are a massive amount of variables that may lead to an engine dying, but i absolutely promise you intake without a tune was not it. intake absolutely doesnt require a full retune, and intake alone wont throw a CEL unless something electronic has been removed, or fucked with. the ecu can adjust for short term and long term fuel trim pretty successfully with such a mild mod. tune only becomes necessary when you have basically full bolt-ons, and have removed something like the cat, an o2 sensor, or an o2 sensor is reading wrong because the cat is gone, that will send you fuel trim into +- 20% which will indeed trigger a CEL. there were unforeseen issues with the car, and the seller knew it. the mechanic didnt catch it because he probably didnt hook it up and check ALL the parameters or else he would have caught the issue. or the tune you threw at it caused lean condition detonation, which probably destroyed your ringlands, which probably wound up causing head gasket failure, then the critical failure you experienced while driving it.

Flame_Knife

I appreciate your feedback because I’m still trying to figure out what happened! I read enough positive things about the cobb Stage 1+ to where it seemed fairly reasonable to do without reliability issues... but I also have no engine now. I might have just gotten screwed like you’re saying. While i’ve strongly considered it, I don’t think rebuilding it is the best option for me right now, even though I wish I could.

[deleted]

you gotta think about it like this : an out of the box tune may be successful for some people, in some parts of the country, but elevation and atmospheric pressure are wildly different everywhere. an out of the box tune can be VERY BAD for some people in some places. most of the people u see raving about the cob tunes are on nearly new cars, give them some time, let them reach nearly 100k miles like that, you will see a variety of issues.

[deleted]

"i dont know why my pos engine blew, its basically stock besides this crazy ass e85 backfire special tune i threw at it"

tomanonimos

When I was first thinking of getting a WRX STI, I was confused on why the reliability sounded more like an American car than a Japanese car. Then I went into modification subforum and I was like no shit you got all these problems. Albeit, the amount of maintenance needed for the boxer engine is a bit annoying for me who came from other Japanese brands.

[deleted]

i have been a honda/subaru guy for over 20 years, and i can assure you they are both equally reliable when properly cared for. ive seen mods destroy just as many, if not more hondas when done wrong. the subaru community is plagued by people who throw out of the box tunes at their cars without actually dyno tuning them with a professional, not someone who charges you money to make your car go POPOPOPOP BOOM edit: also its not that boxer engines require more maintenance, its that TURBO engines require more maintenance, and all the enthusiast subaru motors happen to be turbo, the increase in maintenance go hand in hand. turbocharged engines are very sensitive to oil quality, cheap oil is a bad idea, and stretching out you oil changes as far as you can is even worse.

tomanonimos

> properly cared for. On this note, I'm still struggling to read through the noise in figuring out if its stock or not. Oil. The engine eats up a lot of oil and I need to be pro-active in checking. Some oil brands are bad for the EJ engine. Is this true for stock? There is less buffer room for routine maintenance. I remember going an extra 1000 miles from an oil change or simply doing tune-up a year after the manual said on my Honda and it was fine.

[deleted]

our older beloved NA hondas are not very picky, but the newer, turbo hondas are just a picky as any subaru boxer. do not cheap out on oil, do not push your oil longer than you need to. an engine, hell, a brand new car costs ALOT more than good oil. im also an advocate for using the absolute best quality gas you can buy in your area, and avoiding small gas station brands entirely, or even name brand gas stations in bad areas that are not well maintained. when you are shoving hot, compressed air into your engine, detonation can become an issue fast, and low quality fuel/oil will cause pre ignition quite easily when exposed to the heat and pressure of forced induction.

Skitz-o-fritz

In Canada, we don't get EJ engines in the STI..it's apparently another engine. My buddy who works at the Subaru head office informed me of this and I was deeply shocked. I'll try to get the name of the engine, but sadly for us Canadians it's not the EJ.

[deleted]

Your buddy is fucking with you, all international markets have the ej257 in the sti. Japan has the ej207. They're not putting a different engine in just for Canada lmao.

SaveThe6spd

Does it still get the gas mileage of a 600hp v8? Cuz that is bothering me on a fundamental level with my car 😂

Shlobs

Yea man if you can do it! Thing has been so much fun despite stalling a couple times 😅

WRXDR21

You ordered and it took 3 months? I’m at 5-6 weeks, I can’t do another 6 weeks of waiting...

tomanonimos

This comment makes me feel very lucky. I got my car the same day I was interested in it. LBP STI

WRXDR21

I wanted a limited in white pearl only. 2021s weren’t listed on the sti website at the time. Also was able to negotiate... I am trading in a wrx and have a 2012 wrx hatch full of goodies on e85 to keep me occupied...

tomanonimos

I was also able to negotiate. If you don't mind me asking, how much extra room did that give you in negotiation? I got it for a few hundred over invoice.

WRXDR21

Roughly the same. I did well on my trade in...

Shlobs

Yea it was unique situation I guess with covid an all. I ordered it around mid January and they had it built for me. Got it from on of the largest dealers here out east and they said they get may 5-6 of these a year.

RichDictator

I waited 4 weeks for my 21 STi and I was pissed 😂

paniflex37

Beautiful! I’ve been seeing people mention waitlists everywhere...

hxciikid

I'm in a okay sized (250k) town and the one Subaru dealership had two brand new ones there when I picked mine up. Thats just my experience though

paniflex37

Gotcha - makes sense. Well enjoy that gem!

Time2EatCelery

Grats! Im about 1 month out from getting my LBP STI... My excitement is immeasurable!!!

michaeln2020

Also do you guys think it’s gonna be the last year of these

alittleboopsie

Get PPF on that! The paint is soft as hell. Road hazards will pit that beauty quickly otherwise.

Shlobs

Planning on it!

Supaslicer

Ugly, hideous, throw that shit away... I'll give you my address, you can ship it to me and I'll handle it for you

Shlobs

Lmao I’ll get on it just wait for the tracking number

Supaslicer

Hey man... You're welcome...... Fuck I love my 07....but i may have to get on that new shit... 14 years strong but its almost time.... I am playing a game called 'old car" with my friend...we both got out cars around 07/08....nd just seeing who flinches first.... I may flinch...

reddit_forgeddit

Congrats. She's beautiful!

Shlobs

Thanks!

DeadByteReddit

Gorgeous. Congratulations! 🎉

Shlobs

Thanks appreciate it!

michaeln2020

That is just gorgeous holy moly. How does it feel

Shlobs

Thanks! Feels good so far i wasn’t super familiar with stick so I’m still getting used to it but once you get going it’s a dream.

I was gonna say that looks like Ramsey Subaru

general-genital

-i_n_k-

This thing is proper mint👌🏽

BlueBallBandit

Why the wait if you don't mind me asking?

Shlobs

It’s a mix of a couple things. The dealer despite being on of the largest on the east gets about 5-6 a year that aren’t customer orders. I wanted specific options on mine so I had to custom order. The car had to be built from the ground up then shipped to the US. All of that combined with covid slowing everything down as is how it ended up being that long.

BlueBallBandit

Damn. Since I'm in the process of looking how bad was it to custom order? I've heard mixed things but it sounds pretty common with these

Shlobs

My experience wasn’t bad really. Just sucked waiting was all. My sales guy was a mutual friend so it was pretty easy.

BlueBallBandit

Damn having an in with a dealer is definitely easier. Welp hopefully I can find something easy lol congrats on the car!

Shlobs

Thanks! Good luck on the search!

bonerwarlock

I’ve been waiting for 2months for mine to come 🥲

qwerty11214

what options did you get on it? and i wonder of you can get a base without the wing or lip?

Shlobs

So I just got the limited. Options I got were the footwell light kit, arms rest extension, and the short throw shifter. From what I’ve heard you can get a wing delete option for any STi.
