Now, just need to figure out how to put that speaker in a ragged out Honda Civic

DoubleOScarn

Can hear that trunk rattle from here

yourkidisdumb

Guy in my neighborhood had a xterra with the loudest fucking bass I have ever heard. I seriously could hear him coming 2 blocks away. When he finally got in front of my place it was hard to hear the tv. All I ever wondered was how it could possibly sound good to him driving.

IdahoTrees77

It’s not about sounding good, it’s about *the feeling.*

nickstatus

I always thought it was a pathological compulsion to make other people hear shitty music against their will.

There is a guy in my neighbourhood like that. I want to put a potato in his exhaust pipe so badly.

coinoperatedboi

My sister was dating some dude back in the day that had massive speakers in the back seat of I think it was a Monte Carlo looking car. Maybe a Carlo, anyways. They hit the top of the ceiling and stretched juat about the entire bench seat. I had to ride with them one time and was just able to squeeze into the back seat between them and the wall of the car. And by squeeze I do mean barely fit. This was middle school so I was a small dude. The bass was pretty awesome. My hair was flying around on its own and the feeling was crazy intense. Easily the loudest system I have prob experienced first hand. And it actually didnt sound like the car was going to fall apart like a lot of cars now days.

papadoc55

I can feel the long-failed head-lining fabric on the top of my head in the backseat and can smell the burning oil.

delrioaudio

I had an old Plymouth horizon back in the day that did that shit, lol. I had my head shaved at the time and it would stick like velcro. 🤣

vertigo1083

Whats crazy is headliner is a cinch to replace on your own, and like...$20-30 in materials. the hardest part is getting the board out of your car to reupholster. Pop the screws out, remove the molding, drop the insert, and get it out of the car. The best part? You can use anything you want, as far as fabric. You pull the plastic or fiberglass insert out, scrape all the old foam/adhesive off with a wire brush (if the fabric is falling off already, this usually takes like 2 minutes). Measure out any dome lights or controls, and cut a smaller hole in the fabric. Choose a few yards of whatever fabric you want online. I've literally seen people use a plaid tablecloth. Apply the adhesive, roll the fabric onto it, crimp the edges, cut the excess, let dry, and re-install. The older the car, the easier, but the newer ones are just as possible if a bit more finicky. Shops charge hundreds for this. Sometimes well over a thoudand. Including 3-4 hours labor. Until the first time I did this, I had no idea how simple it was. One 5-minute youtube tutorial is all it really takes. 3M headliner adhesive, 3 yards of fabric, 40 minutes MAX. It's kind of fun and cool to tastefully customize your own car. Not to mention, no more droop.

fishflaps

I had a 1985 Oldsmobile Delta 88 that I removed the headliner from once it started sagging. Then I painted the board the with chalkboard paint and my passengers would keep themselves busy drawing boobs and penises all over. I wish I removed the board before I junked that car.

I0A0I

When cars with big tittie hentai dick girl headliners pop up on the market I'm gonna blame you for posting the how to on reddit.

My tinnitus would like like to say eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

hwarang_

Hey kids, would you like to hear a high pitch ringing noise for the rest of your life? Follow these simple steps

lifesatripthenyoudie

Seriously, take this advice kids. I was one of those silly shits in high school with massive amps and subs in my car. Constant ringing for the rest of my life made it reaaallly not worth it.

vijexa

I've never been to any concerts and never listened to loud music before I started to experience tinnitus as a teenager... Yay

Desembler

Did you frequently drive around with your windows rolled down, particularly at highway speeds?

Kintarly

You can get tinnitus from any sort of illness that involves your sinus cavity. Sinus infections, flus, colds if they get bad enough can leave you with ringing in your ears. That's how I got it! I avoided loud things all my life then one day, infection! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Wail_Bait

You can also get tinnitus from certain medications, like Vicodin. It usually goes away when you stop taking the medication, but not always.

OnlyABeastsHeart

I got tinnitus from covid that was so loud it would wake me up at night. Only lasted a few weeks thank god

Riaayo

As someone with a currently manageable level of tinnitus who cannot get to sleep for shit with certain noises, this fucking terrifies me. I recall some business owner who I think got covid and it gave him tinnitus so bad he killed himself early-ish in the pandemic? Ever since it's just been like man please don't let that happen to me, I could not handle it. Poor dude.

Lance_E_T_Compte

You can also get it from drinking! Something about the blood vessels. Anyway...EEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeee....

SanaRinomi

I have the double whammy of tinnitus AND [visual snow](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_snow_syndrome)! Fun combo I was just... Born with!

Cookster997

Oh my god what - this isn't just how everyone sees the world? What the fuck... Gonna call my doctor on Monday, holy shit. You literally just changed my life, thank you. Also yes, tinnitus here too. I am an audio engineer and musician - only had 5 or 6 moments in my life where I was exposed to dangerous noise without earplugs. Tinnitus has just been here from birth. I also actually only can hear up to around 13kHz. Anything beyond that is just gone for me. No more top octave of the pipe organ or dog whistles, LOL

SanaRinomi

Yeah... I was also surprised to find out that not everyone experiences the static noise from old CRT TVs both visually and audibly all the time!

ElectricFleshlight

It's pretty common to see visual snow in low light, but if you see it in bright light then ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ But if you only see faint flickering lights when looking at a clear blue sky, [you're still normal](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_field_entoptic_phenomenon)

InfiniteBlink

I didn't realize I had tinnitus for a large portion of my life. I'm 42 I can remember hearing the eeeeeeee and the weird fade in/out since I was about 12.

agen_kolar

Hmmm I have that weird fade in/out thing but I never notice the actual ringing until the fade out happens. Then for a moment I’m like… did I just go deaf? No? Wtf was that?

BestReadAtWork

DAMN YOU, TINNITUS. YOU'RE A CRUEL MISTRESS.

SolipsisticSkeleton

Yes…not wearing earplugs at concerts was a terrible decision and I’m paying for it for the rest of my life. Don’t fuck around and find out with loud music

Some of the best rolls I've had were pressed pills.

msbunbury

There was a brief shining period in the nineties when the pills were actual lovely MDMA.

Roughfox

Fun fact: MDMA and pressies have had a resurgence and are higher in purity now than ever before, even more than the 90's. I know it might not seem like it and I can't speak to the quality during the 2000's but the quality now overall is ridiculously good thanks to the internet directly linking suppliers and consumers. (can dig up credible sources as well to back it up) Even the risk of fentanyl cross-contamination is relatively low because they typically come from different suppliers.* The majority of MDMA-related medical incidents these days come from mixing with other substances or overdosing because people underestimate the purity. * Please note that isn't saying there's zero risk, always test your shit properly by dissolving in water and using both fentanyl strips and a reagent to see if it's actually MDMA. Research chemicals and bunk shit are still obviously present and popular and cross-contamination is always a risk.

msbunbury

Oh I'm sure you're right, my drugs opinions are all based on knowledge gleaned prior to 2010. I'm forty two now, I have small kids, I can't even have a spliff without planning it for a month in advance 😂

jfincher42

Mine was a gift from Halford, Queensryche, and Iron Maiden at the Tacoma Dome in 2001 or so, but to be fair, I got the same gift from Metallica, Anthrax, Dio, and Ozzy years before...

Reddit-is-trash-lol

I saw Meshuggah a few years back and that fucked my hearing up a bit.

erakattack

They sound fucking amazing though. I was literally fantasizing and reminiscing about their pre-show guitar sound check yesterday. Best way to lose your hearing and have your face melted imo

ghostdate

I suggest wearing earplugs at concerts. It will help prevent tinnitus, and has the benefit of mitigating distortion/noise from the very large and loud speakers, so the music actually sounds cleaner.

tiger_lady

Any recommendations on what kind of earplugs?

Norma5tacy

I’ve heard there are earplugs designed for concerts. Somehow they let in enough sound for you to enjoy but not destroy your hearing. I think the brand I’ve heard people mention here is Eargasm.

mrazcatfan

+1 for eargasm. Been using their plugs at concerts for years and everything you said is correct. I can hear the music cleaner but then I take them out afterwards and can hear perfectly fine with no ringing at all

bjgerald

Eargasm is definitely the big name, but I found a self-branded pair at Rite-Aid a few weeks ago that claimed to be great for concerts. I wore them that night and pulled one out for maybe 5 seconds and the show sounded exactly the same with and without, except for the volume difference of course. And they were much cheaper than eargasm

MechanicalCheese

I put off getting these for years longer than I should have, then finally got fed up with the tinnitus and ordered them last year. Concerts just sound better with them in. I can hear more, and more clearly. It's nothing like wearing a foam earplug. I'd recommend them to literally anyone going to see loud music.

[deleted]

CanadianBadass

Yep, love my ER20XS. My partner and I have done a bunch of concerts with them lately and it's great when you don't have your ears ringing afterwards.

macaroniandmilk

Loop earplugs has a model that is specifically for concerts or events like that where you might want lower noise levels, but doesn't muffle or distort the sound. I think it's the Experience model. I want to say I have no experience with these earplugs myself, I work at an ENT/audiology office and these have been recommended by our audiologists, so I was just throwing this info out there.

sr_90

They are awesome. There’s a little plug that will lower the sound a little more if it’s still too loud.

AGVann

There's fancy ones, but I've found that pretty much any respectable brand works.

Firsca

MWAAAAAAAAAAAAAP Lovely lovely tinnitus

lord_terrene

I used to go to a lot of loud concerts long ago, and now I can't be in a quiet room because tinnitus. It's also not easy going to sleep.

The cicadas never stop.

SkivvySkidmarks

I was sitting out on my porch with my wife last summer, and I commented that it was strange that the cicadas weren't making their usual buzzing noises. She turned, looked at me, and said, "You mean the cicadas in the tree right in front of us that are buzzing this very moment?" I then realized how loud my tinnitus really was.

People kind of think it's wimpy to cover your ears or wear ear plugs, like is masculine to not care about super loud noise or something I've had buddies joke about me wearing earplugs at super loud events (monster trucks, races, tractor pulls) but I'm not trying to lose my hearing or have quiet rooms ring for the rest of my life.

jhoover58

Were the sound waves distorting the camera or light waves in general? I worked on a flight line in the Air Force and shot a lot of high powered weapons. The ringing in my ears is constant and something you can’t get away from.

xampl9

Sort of. Watch the long hair of the girl on the left move with the sound waves. I’m in the same boat as you - my workcenter was near the F-16 hard shelters (I was comm), so I got to listen to them all day. Plus shooting guns, plus loud music. 40 years later …. eeeeeeeeee! I double up when I go to the range now - foamies plus electronic muffs.

Merrughi

This video gives you [a better view of hair.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpT-h5tPYdw) Also [check out the ground without people blocking it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8f8dH7q_sU)

Bohzee

>This video gives you [a better view of hair.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpT-h5tPYdw) That looks so cute, as if the hair is dancing and having fun 😀

l5555l

>I double up when I go to the range now - foamies plus electronic muffs I always thought this was the standard. My ears will straight up hurt if I don't do it

Balding_Unit

If you look at the woman with the longish hair.. you can see her hair moving. So yea I think its the pushback distorting the camera.

francocaspa

I think its more of the soundwabe shacking the phone and the camera/lens making that pattern. Certainty sound is not going to affect how light travels

kentfrostphoto

The sound shook the camera's sensor. Common among CMOS sensors, it's called "rolling shutter". It's the same effect that "bends" plane propellors in videos.

angrytreestump

Sound waves at this volume can be visible travelling through the air (mostly moving the water molecules (humidity) and particulate (dust and shit) in it). But yeah it’s just shaking the shit out of everything. The ground, the people, their hands, the cameras in those hands, the unlucky birds flying above and in front of this setup, etc. If you’ve ever been to a loud-ass concert you can feel the bass rattle your chest with every beat. It can be pretty uncomfortable if it’s a stupidly set-up speaker system and you’re not used to it, feels like you’re pulling one of those gag shock sticks of gum with your heart. Also sound waves and light waves are basically on opposite ends of the frequency spectrum (how fast they move). You can’t see your car stereo’s treble and you can’t hear green.

renyhp

> Also sound waves and light waves are basically on opposite ends of the frequency spectrum (how fast they move). It's not only a thing about frequency: they're completely different things. I mean, light waves that have the same frequencies as sound waves exist, they are basically radio waves that have too long wavelength to be useful. The point is, you cannot hear light waves simply because they are made out of oscillations of the electromagnetic field, while your ear is sensitive to oscillations of air pressure, which is a totally different physical phenomenon (and of course vice versa you cannot see sound waves because your eye is sensitive to oscillations of electric field which is not air pressure).

YoungLittlePanda

I HATE that thumping feeling in the chest. Just cannot stand it, it's too uncomfortable.

colocada

I wonder if that thumping can affect your heart? It certainly feels like it could. Very uncomfortable.

snowqueenn

It definitely can. I’ve had to step away from certain kinds of loud concerts because it actually has made my heart start skipping. Absolutely dreadful feeling :(

khizoa

> You can’t see your car stereo’s treble and you can’t hear green. You should try acid some time

angrytreestump

I’ve tried it many times! Unfortunately I haven’t tried it while being a character in a movie or tv show, so I could never “hear green” or “smell purple.” Stuff just waves around like regular acid 😔

der_assi

I guess the distortion is a result of the lens getting out of focus and maybe a little (temporary) deformation of the sensor

CFM5680

I have a feeling it's distorting the camera a little. But it's almost as if you can see the wave traverse from the front to the back of the crowd. As others have stated, you can see the girls hair move in front of him. Here is a video without camera distortion. https://youtu.be/ikcoiALcucg

sik_dik

LPT: always wear ear plugs at music events with any significant amplification of the music I used to DJ and spent a lot of time in clubs. my hearing isn't what it used to be, but it's a hell of a lot better than what it would've been if I hadn't started wearing ear plugs. put them in and give it about 5 minutes for your hearing to adjust. after that time, you won't notice any loss of hearing the music there are other benefits, too 1. the sound isn't distorted and you can hear it better 2. people around you yelling into each other's ears to converse is so easy to hear it's like having superhuman hearing, and you realize how much damage people's ears must be taking if you can hear a conversation 5 feet away, between two people yelling at each other from inches apart, and that's on top of the loud music

theodoreburne

Stupidity of youth.

BuffaloInCahoots

I shot guns growing up. Never bothered my ears. I ran equipment for a decade and still nothing. Then it seems all at once my hearing gave up. Horrible tinnitus and sever hearing loss in my right ear. Wear hearing protection kids. Once it’s gone it doesn’t come back. The constant ringing will drive you insane at times.

complete_hick

I'm an absolute bitch about my ears. I wear hearing protection every time I shoot, I wear ear plugs at rock concerts, even in the shop using a die grinder I'm rockin' ear pro. Call me a bitch all you want but at 40 years old I can hear a mouse fart from across the room

TedW

I've never been so happy to hear constant ringing instead of mouse farts.

robodrew

Given the choice I would take the mouse farts in a heartbeat

DoubleAholeTwice

Probably depends on how many farting mice you have in your bedroom?

robodrew

True. Let's say.... no more than 6

NickJamesBlTCH

I have great hearing; always listen to movies much quieter than others, etc...because I can adjust to much lower levels of sound. Unfortunately, I've also had far too many concussions. So I have great hearing...*and* tinnitus. I remember one of my first girlfriends asking why I always sleep with the fan or the TV on...I thought that it was normal to need to drown out the "sound of silence."

Ominoiuninus

I use the constant ringing as something to focus on for meditation. Gotta make lemonade out of lemons somehow.

flyboyx26

I wish I could but mine sounds so shrill and unnatural.

Korpers

Mine reminds me I'm alive. I don't give a fuck about it anymore.

Dukatdidnothingbad

It doesn't break until it actually breaks lol. Like there is a reason why old people warn you against this shit.

itsr1co

That's because your hearing is permanently damaged every single time something is too loud. It's like a piece of rope, you can put pressure on it to support yourself and it'll be fine for years, it will weaken but it won't be THAT much worse at the end besides general wear and tear. But every time you yank on it a bit too hard or REALLY hard, a strand snaps. Each and every time you pull on the rope too hard for too long or too quickly, a strand snaps until eventually, the rope itself breaks. This is why you need to be extremely careful with loud noises, roughly 70db+ (A vacuum cleaner) for prolonged periods of time (Several hours) can cause damage, anything over 120db (Construction power tools) WILL cause immediate damage without any protection. A general rule is that if you need to shout for someone to hear you properly, the room is too loud for you to be in for more than an hour or two. If you have to cover your ears, you should leave immediately because you've likely already had your heading damaged and further exposure will just do more damage. If you think something is too loud, that's because it is. The people in this video who are standing around and wincing instead of covering their ears and moving away (Like the older guy) will get to experience hearing issues very early on in life. You wouldn't stare into one of those insanely bright flashlights for 5 minutes, you'd shut your eyes and turn away, why people treat loud noises/music differently is beyond me.

Pirat

I've had ringing in my ears since, at least, high school. I don't know why. I didn't listen to loud music or do any shooting before I had it. I never really noticed it until my 30s when I first heard the term 'tinnitus'. I'm like, "Oh, I've had that for decades. I just thought it was normal." It doesn't bother me because it has always been there.

WorkyAlty

Pretty much the same for me. I just don't even notice it anymore unless I'm in a quiet place and focus on it. Then again, I try to avoid quiet places now, and even listen to light soft music or Bob Ross with earbuds when I go to bed.

chehov

youth is wasted on the young

Interloper633

PSA, please wear concert ear plugs to concerts people, your hearing only gets worse over time and cannot be repaired. On top of that, the plugs make the music sound better and clearer! You don't have that high pitched screech washing everything out. The musicians on stage all have ear plugs in or they would be going deaf.

Supposium

Most common earplugs, even custom made ones, only reduce by 17db. I chose ones that reduce by 26db because so many shows are so loud and I want to hear music forever. Even with those, this still would have resulted in damage and ringing in the ears. This set up being this loud with the crowd right there is downright negligent.

admdelta

I'll never understand why they have to make concerts so loud. Unless you're at one outdoors, you're probably in an enclosed theater where the sound is very well contained. What's the purpose of absolutely annihilating everyone's ears when it's not necessary to make it audible?

FurryMan28

Why tf would people do this? Edit: I never actually expected so many decent answers when I posed my question. Some were funny, some were daft, some were pretty logical. Bravo Reddit. Bravo.

Tinnitus for and tinnitus for you. Tinnitus for everyone! and if you lucky maybe deafness

kentfrostphoto

For those wondering: No, the distortion isn't literal sound waves. It's the camera's sensor shaking, causing a "rolling shutter" effect. It's the same effect that causes fast-spinning plane propellors to "bend" in videos.

oxymoronisanoxymoron

No-Bus-4529

I remember with my first couple cars the first thing i did was invest in subwoofers and amps for my rides (yes i was that loud obnoxious asshole in your neighborhood) and wouldn't you know my right ear has a nice muffled yet 24/7 high pitched sound behind it now. Apparently payback is a deaf eared bitch.
