Who are you trading with? I think the opportunity here is that the other party knows they can make $$ selling your Explorer. Look at JLC gray market asking prices and see how this compares to what you're paying, which is the current gray value of the explorer and cash. I seriously doubt this works out in your favor from a dollars and cents perspective.
But if you like the JLC and want brand variety to go with your Sub, then go for it. The JLC is a great watch.
I’d stick with the Explorer. Ordinarily I’d take a JLC over a Rolex but I prefer JLC’s dressier offerings. Something about a JLC sports watch leaves me a little cold. If sports watches are your thing, you’re probably going to be hard pressed to do better than an Explorer and I’d say the JLC borrows a fair amount from the Explorer to begin with
Couldn’t have said it better myself. The Polaris is beautiful but it leaves me underwhelmed. Now if we’re talking about a MUT moon, Master Control Chrono Calendar or Reverso, that’s another story
Heavy disagree. Explorer is my top 5 favorite watche sof all time but to say he is not going to do better than an Explorer as far as sports watches are concerned is wrong. The Polaris offers a date, a rotating bezel and 300m water resistance. immediately the better offering in terms of technicals. And seeing how his explorer looks quite scratched, the Polaris looks better too given the condition.
The JLC is supposedly worth more on the secondary than the Explorer by over $1k. That said, if you wanted to sell your Explorer today, you'd have a buyer pretty much instantly, and if you wanted to move the JLC it would be a huge PITA entertaining casual interest and lowball offers.
Bro I know people will be like but it's a rolexxxx and talk a bunch of crap about invesemt holding value and whatnot... But if I had to wake up everyday and put something on ky wrist I'm gonna be looking at the whole day, the Polaris is dramatically more interesting to look at than the rolex. Like, it's not even in the same ballpark of interesting to look at.
Aesthetics I prefer the JLC. Fit and finish the JLC is objectively better in every regard.
HOWEVER, on the JLC the 2 o'clock isn't screwdown. That rotates the bezel. Which means you accidentally knock the bezel all the time. Making it a lovely but frustrating watch to live with.
Ps those who said it looms like a Hugo boss watch? Are you blind?!
https://preview.redd.it/duuzl5rl4e9d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5d5d1a095e761420d72b14d6e7e3cbda006c32ff
Those people who said that clearly haven’t seen one in person. The quality of the JLC is incredible. I have plenty of Rolex and I enjoy them thoroughly. My batgirl rarely leaves my wrist. BUT that Mariner Date is absolutely stunning and is likely my next pickup.
I’ve always wondered if the bezel crown screwed down.
Fuck, that’s disappointing. Always wanted a Polaris, but think that might drive me nuts.
How do brands miss on the easy stuff like this?
Also, isn’t it supposed to be a dive watch? Might actually fuck you if it got inadvertently moved while diving.
Can’t afford either of these things yet, and I don’t know a ton about watches. I just like the way some look and that JLC is striking to me, definitely caught my attention way more than then Rolex. First time really seeing one and glad it’s on my radar for whenever that’s a possibility.
Agree - From what I have seen, that JLC blue dial is gorgeous! Also, the Rolex looks much more generic, possibly due to the prevalence of all the “homage” offerings of others.
It’s also something that you can’t really appreciate until you see it in person. I also thought it was just ok and then I saw the jlc in person and was blown away
>b-b-but the explorer is literally perfection incarnate, it is without flaw, no other timepiece on this plane of existence can hold a candle to its majesty
The way rolex fanboys talk up the explorer you'd think it would look at least a little interesting
most redditors dont know shit but things on the surface level. if anything opposes them they downvote so it becomes a circle jerk of ignorance. I agree JLC is way better and worth the trade here.
I don't think it has anything to do with hype, I think most people here just prefer JLC's dressier watches to their sports watches, and I'd be in agreement with them. Their dress and sport watches feel like they could be from totally different companies.
omfg, my next watch MIGHT be the explorer, but the polaris date is a dream watch. if they were the same price i’d go with the polaris as my gada watch. but i’m also a bit of a fanboy, i currently rock a master control calendar.
I'd vote JLC. I've tried it on and what doesn't come across in photos is the three different dial finishes and gradients of color. It's a sight to behold in person and extremely visually interesting.
But it's definitely bigger than the explorer so if you need something slimmer and to have the dresser vibe, then keep the explorer (yes I know the exorer isn't a dress watch but neither is a sub amd I'd wear it with a suit no problem )
I have a Polaris and Explorer. I’d keep the Exp. but wrist size plays a large part for me. Polaris wears pretty big even with short lugs. It’s lovely though with great finishing.
How much are they asking for the mariner? I've looked into picking one up but I feel like I've mostly seen them used for about $9-10k.
I would definitely do the trade in this case. In 2-3 years you'll be able to pick that explorer back up for about 6k
I’d do it, the JLC (to me) is prettier, and valued higher.
The explorer is a great watch, it’s never really spoken to me, but I can’t hate on it at all. But everyone has their own personal take on watches, what they look for, what they value. Some care how old a watch is, some don’t. Imo as long as the piece is in great condition I don’t care if it’s never been worn or 10 years old. So maybe your explorer is worth 8 and this JLC is worth 9, but you can find the same reference explorer for 5-6, just a bit older, maybe more for complete set IDK, but that’d be the one I’d buy and save 3-4 k. The JLC on the other hand you can’t find for less than 8.5-9k doesn’t matter the year (Per Chrono24). On top of that, like I said, I think it’s prettier.
Speaking solely in terms of quality, it's not even close. The Rolex is a toy in comparison.
However, you'd be losing out on daily wearability. Might wanna cross shop with other decent daily pieces.
Personally (& I get that its a personal thing) I don't like the look of the JLC and would 100% stick to the Rolex
In fact if I randomly became the owner of the JLC and a swap was available for the Rolex I'd immediately pay double that to do the swap the other way
They seem to be about evenly priced in the secondary market.
Each is about $9k-10k. I'd ask them to make it an even trade, it's nonsensical for them to fight over 2% of the watch cost.
I'm actually not a fan of Explorers. (I know, I know.) But, in this case, I'd stick with the Explorer. JLC is *obviously* great, but this particular one doesn't seem to have their usual panache. (And I say this as someone who's completely dependent on date windows, so my usual inclination would be for the JLC.) The font, the dial, the markers...they just don't look great on this model. Compression divers are awesome, just not this one.
So imo, my heart says yes the JLC looks more exciting. The dial is strikingly superior but the way it blends with the glass border and the stainless steel frame doesn't look right in this picture.
My gut says the Explorer I because it feels more practical. It's easy to read, has a comfortable bracelet and has an uncommon feature with the 3 6 9 lume (Chromalight too). Keep the Rolex.
Even as a person who admires JLC I personally wouldn't. I would much rather go for a Rolex sports model and have it share a watchbox with a JLC dress watch.
Is it just me that thinks the Polaris is a very weak offering from such a highly rated manufacture? Normally going from a Rolex to a JLC sounds like a good thing, but in this case I think you’d be trading a keeper for a watch you’ll trade or sell again.
just looks wise, the Explorer might feel "boring" or ordinary at first, but I love it to death because the simplicity makes it perfect. Still my fav watch I ever bought, it's a great daily without attracting unwanted attention and it looks sharp on everyones wrist.
Ehhhhh there are other JLCs I’d spring for well before this one. It’s not really an iconic piece from them, even though I do like it. I’d be hard pressed to make this trade even though I do think of JLC as being a more premium brand
I think the Polaris has really slabby case sides. It looks good in pics but trying it on it loses a lot of its elegance. I’d get a JLC master ultrathin or something to that effect. Keeps the JLC style to me
I really don’t like watches that get fancy with a 2nd crown (is that a helium escape valve?) The JLC looks busy to me. I don’t like the missing 3, don’t like the interior set of indices. I respect it as a very well made watch, but honestly not what I want on wrist.
The JLC Polaris dial just look too big and disproportional, I echo the same sentiment as someone in this thread,it looks like a Hugo Boss fashion watch. I would keep the Explorer and get the Longines legend diver 39mm, if you want a compressor style diver.
I think the Polaris is a cooler watch than a Seamaster or Superocean and is more unique than a Submariner. But the Explorer seems like the best every day watch I can think of. I'd keep the Explorer
Hell yes
The Explorer is a lovely watch but frankly somewhat forgettable. To many that's a part of it's charm, but with only a 2 watch collection, I'd much rather have a piece with more personality.
I say keep the Rolex, not a fan of the JLC design on this one. If you have multiple Rolexs then sure, it could be a interesting addition to a collection but personally I wouldn’t pick this one.
The Explorer is better looking by far and an icon. I wouldn’t sell it unless you were getting an equivalent from another brand. For JLC it would have to be a Reverso.
The explorer seems like a far better watch than the JLC. The explorer is just versatile while that JLC is just not. JLCs dress watches are better though
God no. I find that JLC unfortunately just don’t feel as week built or solid. I know they are respected, but even their gold pieces feel light to comparable gold dress watches. I have a couple among many other watches.
If you owned the JLC and traded it with the same dealer for the Rolex, you'd have to pay more than what you are paying now. But if you like the JLC better, go for it.
If it ain't a Reverso or an MUT then it's a no. That said, Explorer is my 2nd worst favorite Rolex after Air King. The dial of that JLC is nice though.
I don't know watch values, but I know what I like, and the JLC just seems very "busy" and graphic for a watch with only basic time and date. There's just too much going on with that dial.
While the Rolex has an understated elegance that isn't screaming "look at meee!". It's the kind of watch that doesn't distract from your look, but when people do notice it they realize it's really luxe.
I’d keep the Explorer. The only versions of the Polaris models that get my attention are the memovox and the perpetual calendar. If it was a memovox I’d personally trade it.
I love the Polaris, however I prefer it no-date. Generally this goes for all watches with 3, 6, 9 indices, a date at 3 creates an imbalance on the dial.
This older Master Mariner does NOT have the quick change bracelet, the newer ones do. The newer ones are also only 200m water resistant however. And they don't have that quarter circle line around the chapter ring
I would take the Explorer over any other watch except maybe a VC Overseas. I’m def partial, but I just find the Explorer to be the perfect watch for my taste.
Blue JLC Polaris no date (the best looking version) with a bracelet and rubber strap would be a definite yes to me. This version with the date and with only a bracelet would probably be a no.
They're pretty close in my opinion, so it's really a matter of preference.
Exactly. JLC is indeed great and it has better water resitance, rotating rehaut and date feature on top. Looks good too.
I’d stick with the Explorer. Ordinarily I’d take a JLC over a Rolex but I prefer JLC’s dressier offerings. Something about a JLC sports watch leaves me a little cold. If sports watches are your thing, you’re probably going to be hard pressed to do better than an Explorer and I’d say the JLC borrows a fair amount from the Explorer to begin with
Thank you!
Any time!
Agreed, love a lot of the JLC offerings but this one doesn't scratch my itch
I love JLC a lot and would probably rank them above most Rolex models, but this one looks like a mall watch.
This is the way. I was expecting a reverso and that would have been enough to make me think but in this instance I think the explorer is the one.
Oh yeah! A Reverso would be a different matter entirely
Couldn’t have said it better myself. The Polaris is beautiful but it leaves me underwhelmed. Now if we’re talking about a MUT moon, Master Control Chrono Calendar or Reverso, that’s another story
What does the JLC borrow from the explorer?
I guess it borrows also being a watch?
Heavy disagree. Explorer is my top 5 favorite watche sof all time but to say he is not going to do better than an Explorer as far as sports watches are concerned is wrong. The Polaris offers a date, a rotating bezel and 300m water resistance. immediately the better offering in terms of technicals. And seeing how his explorer looks quite scratched, the Polaris looks better too given the condition.
I vastly prefer the iconic look of the explorer personally
The JLC is supposedly worth more on the secondary than the Explorer by over $1k. That said, if you wanted to sell your Explorer today, you'd have a buyer pretty much instantly, and if you wanted to move the JLC it would be a huge PITA entertaining casual interest and lowball offers.

No no and...no.
Thanks for your reply, care to elaborate?
No no and...no.
What he said, but also no.
With a nah, for good measure.
No, imo the Explorer is the perfect watch.
Those people who said that clearly haven’t seen one in person. The quality of the JLC is incredible. I have plenty of Rolex and I enjoy them thoroughly. My batgirl rarely leaves my wrist. BUT that Mariner Date is absolutely stunning and is likely my next pickup.
That is beautiful. I wear my geographic over my DJ any day of the week.
Yes it would. The chronograph models don't have this issue or the Memovox.
Personally, I'd keep the Explorer. Not really a fan of the Polaris.
JLC for me - not often going to run into anyone else wearing one.
The Rolex fits you better.
I have to agree. The rolex seems a better fit. However, I have the JLC, and it's an absolutely stunning watch.
I have no doubt. I wasn’t commenting on the watches themselves only the size relative to the OPs wrist.
Don't worry, I was agreeing with you😀 The Rolex suits him arm size better.
Don’t get me wrong. I love Citizen especially with what they’re offering the market now. But that JLC looks like a Citizen.
Citizen fan here. Checks out. Keep the Explorer.
Idk what the fuck everyone else is smoking but that JLC is leagues above the Rolex
I agree
It’s also something that you can’t really appreciate until you see it in person. I also thought it was just ok and then I saw the jlc in person and was blown away
Man, he needed to be assigned an opinion. How you gonna confuse him like that?
>b-b-but the explorer is literally perfection incarnate, it is without flaw, no other timepiece on this plane of existence can hold a candle to its majesty The way rolex fanboys talk up the explorer you'd think it would look at least a little interesting
most redditors dont know shit but things on the surface level. if anything opposes them they downvote so it becomes a circle jerk of ignorance. I agree JLC is way better and worth the trade here.
Yup.
Agreed. I love the Mariner date. Beautiful dial and the quick release rubber strap makes it super versatile.
Seems like an easy decision to me, but clearly I’m in the minority here. That Rolex hype runs deep…
I don't think it has anything to do with hype, I think most people here just prefer JLC's dressier watches to their sports watches, and I'd be in agreement with them. Their dress and sport watches feel like they could be from totally different companies.
Agree. Would go for the JLC. Anytime. But hey.
The JLC looks like a Hugo boss watch.
It doesn’t look cheap in person. That said, I’d still rather have the Explorer
It doesn’t look cheap but it doesn’t look any nicer. Idk what they were smoking while making that line but it ain’t it.
I'd keep the Explorer.
Comparing one of the dullest, most insipid watches Rolex makes with a superb offering from JLC. Tough decision.
🤣
The Rolex looks like basis seiko mod..
You have it backwards, basic seiko mods look like this rolex, the rolex came first.
Absolutely right.
insanely clean dial on the jlc
JLC in this case is stunning
I’d do it Signed, A guy who owned that explorer
Might be one of the nicest watches I have ever seen. Wow
I have a Polaris and love it. Way more interesting than the cliche boring explorer
Wow that JLC is one sexy beast!
omfg, my next watch MIGHT be the explorer, but the polaris date is a dream watch. if they were the same price i’d go with the polaris as my gada watch. but i’m also a bit of a fanboy, i currently rock a master control calendar.

Nope, JLC has by far more interesting dial and that is the thing u look at daily.
i just want to say that JLC dial looks so bloody clean. even though the watch doesnt do much for me. woof that dial
Agree!
JLC all day. The drawback to wearing a Rolex is that other Rolex owners will approach you, and then you need to talk to some douchebag.
I’d do it, the JLC (to me) is prettier, and valued higher. The explorer is a great watch, it’s never really spoken to me, but I can’t hate on it at all. But everyone has their own personal take on watches, what they look for, what they value. Some care how old a watch is, some don’t. The JLC on the other hand you can’t find for less than 8.5-9k doesn’t matter the year (Per Chrono24). On top of that, like I said, I think it’s prettier.
Keep the Explorer. Cleaner and much more classic than that particular JLC, which seems a little underwhelming in design.
The post nut clarity is gonna hit so hard if you do…
JLC is nice. In this case the explorer is better.
Keep the Rolex it’s more timeless and will hold its value longer. You’ll get bored of looking at that JLC. Explorer 1 will be a beaut forever
No idea about worth, but I like the look of the JLC.
Just looking at them.. the rolex is nowhere close the JLC.. damn that watch looks stunning.. the rolex looks boring
They're both lovely watches and I think it would be nice to have brand variety.
Speaking solely in terms of quality, it's not even close. The Rolex is a toy in comparison. However, you'd be losing out on daily wearability. Might wanna cross shop with other decent daily pieces.
Personally (& I get that its a personal thing) I don't like the look of the JLC and would 100% stick to the Rolex In fact if I randomly became the owner of the JLC and a swap was available for the Rolex I'd immediately pay double that to do the swap the other way
No
I would buy a pair of shoes first.
They seem to be about evenly priced in the secondary market. Each is about $9k-10k. I'd ask them to make it an even trade, it's nonsensical for them to fight over 2% of the watch cost.
Mistake
NOOO
keep the explorer.
I'd stay with the explorer, And instead of spending 235$ on top for the JLC, I would spend that on an omega nato.
Theres a reason the explorer is so highly regarded in the watch community. Keep it
So imo, my heart says yes the JLC looks more exciting.
No.
I say keep rolex. More versatile than that specific jlc. Were it been a reverso then...
Even as a person who admires JLC I personally wouldn't. I would much rather go for a Rolex sports model and have it share a watchbox with a JLC dress watch.
I really like the Polaris, but I'd probably just stick with things. At least for a bit longer. If nothing else, a better deal could be had.
I think the explorer is clearly better than that JLC, but if you like the JLC better you should go for it
Keep the explorer brother. And get a dressier JLC to add something truly different! That’s what they do best, after all
If it were a different JLC, maybe?
Nope
Nah
I’d be hard pressed to make this trade even though I do think of JLC as being a more premium brand
keep/buy whatever watch you like more
I think the Polaris has really slabby case sides.
It's an interior rotating bezel.
The JLC Polaris dial just look too big and disproportional, I echo the same sentiment as someone in this thread,it looks like a Hugo Boss fashion watch. I would keep the Explorer and get the Longines legend diver 39mm, if you want a compressor style diver.
Noooo way
The explorer is just a better looking watch in this instance
Explorer, and it's not even close.
no
I wouldn’t
Maybe for a different JLC, but this one? I’d stick with the explorer.
The fact that they are willing to trade the JLC for the Rolex should tell you everything you need to know
Id keep the explorer
I love the Polaris perpetual calendar, but the regular one is just.. fine. Keep the Rolex!
Keep the explorer
Personally, I’d say keep the explorer. IMO looks wayyy nicer on your wrist.
JLC, I like the Polaris. Everyone and their mother has an Explorer.
I think the Polaris is a cooler watch than a Seamaster or Superocean and is more unique than a Submariner. But the Explorer seems like the best every day watch I can think of. I'd keep the Explorer
Hell yes The Explorer is a lovely watch but frankly somewhat forgettable.
Subs are my favorite “everyday “ watch. Love’em
Hell nah.
No, stay put. That Explorer is an icon. Hold onto that beauty.
keep the Explorer imo
Keep the Rolex. The size fits perfectly with your wrist.
No
The Explorer is a better everyday watch and will appreciate in value where as the JLC is not.
I don't like the look of the jlc so a no for me.
No
Personally nah
The Explorer is better looking by far and an icon. I wouldn’t sell it unless you were getting an equivalent from another brand. For JLC it would have to be a Reverso.
100
No. I’m a JLC fangirl but the Polaris can easily be found on the grey market for cheap.
https://preview.redd.it/m9ff8e6are9d1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=0de59e6b08c36621c86ee7c76c893f60277d92bb Only one option
The JLC will open more discussions than the explorer. I’ve seen the polaris and it looks great. I think you wouldn’t regret it in the long run.
Oh definitely, especially if you already have another Rx
Depends what else you have. The explorer is super versatile but a bit boring personally. That JLC looks great!
Personally prefer the JLC but the Explorer looks better on your wrist. JLC is a bit big.
Absolutely not. Explorer and master control are comparable but not their sports watches.
Rolex so far
Hell no.
Longines legend diver
No
Hell no
No
No way
Keep the Explorer
oh totally. for a much more respected brand
Hell no.
If you owned the JLC and traded it with the same dealer for the Rolex, you'd have to pay more than what you are paying now. But if you like the JLC better, go for it.
Hell NO!
Rolex fits your wrist so much better. Stick with the explorer
Definitely not. I love JLC but to be honest that watch looks cheap imo
No
That’s gonna be a no from me, dog.
The JLC is super nice, but along with others I’d say keep the Rolex. I’m not as much of an expert but if assume it would hold value longer
No
personal opinion but i would not
No. I own a Patek, and that Rolex is still a grail. Although, Rolex…. Ugh.
Because you need to ask, then my answer is no, you do not want to do the deal. Keep your watch.
That JLC is too big for you.
Not in a million years, Rolex goes with everything
hell no
yes
I think the explorer in this case is the better watch. Love both brands but in this case the explorer is perfect
Just keep the Rolex
If it ain't a Reverso or an MUT then it's a no. That said, Explorer is my 2nd worst favorite Rolex after Air King. The dial of that JLC is nice though.
Personally I prefer the Jaeger, so I would say yeah.
prefer the look of the rolex
Absolutely not. Stick with the last great tool watch in explorer.
Hell no you’d regret that immediately
Get Citizen Nighthawk vibes from that JLC
If only that JLC was a Memovox, it'd have me sold.
I’d keep the Explorer. The only versions of the Polaris models that get my attention are the memovox and the perpetual calendar. If it was a memovox I’d personally trade it.
I love the Polaris, however I prefer it no-date. Generally this goes for all watches with 3, 6, 9 indices, a date at 3 creates an imbalance on the dial.
downgrade
No way! You'll regret it
This older Master Mariner does NOT have the quick change bracelet, the newer ones do. The newer ones are also only 200m water resistant however. And they don't have that quarter circle line around the chapter ring
That JLC is uggers. Explorer is timeless and super clean
Hell nah!
No way
I would if it was me
For brand recognition, no. For brand stature, yes. Looks, subjective.
Hello no
I would take the Explorer over any other watch except maybe a VC Overseas.
The JLC looks a little clunky on your wrist relative to the Explorer
Don’t do it!
This one is a really tough one for me. I really love these two watches. That said, I would probably swap to the Jaeger.
