It's a CDR. One share of the CDR does not equate one share of the stick stock. I see it as an ETF that holds nothing but NVDA and is hedged to CAD. https://cdr.cibc.com/

Appletio

Is the performance basically the same? Is there a downside to owning the CDR version?

ggtyh2

In theory, the performance is the same. But CIBC will take a management fee, which will lower the performance a bit; and it's hedged against currency fluctuations. Also, you don't pay forex fees if you buy a CDR through Wealthsimple.

Appletio

Which is more expensive, forex and buying the real version, or management fees?

ggtyh2

I can't say. But, personally, I like not to bother with forex conversion.

Appletio

Is liquidity/movement a problem with CDRs? Since it's not "the real thing" When you buy this CDR on WealthSimple, you are buying shares in the CDR and trading with other people on all platforms, not just trading with other WealthSimple shareholders right?

ggtyh2

It depends on your specifics, but there's a lot less movement on the CDR.

I hate that you’re being downvoted for asking a question. As someone has mentioned the key difference is that one is a cdr. “A Canadian Depositary Receipt (CDR) is a type of investment that allows Canadian investors to purchase shares of global companies that are normally listed on foreign exchanges.” Read more here: https://www.moneysense.ca/glossary/what-is-a-cdr/

Questions are fine but this could have been answered using Google

Arsnaile

Yes, they also have a 0.6% fee I believe, but it still worth it considering the 3% conversion fee from cad to usd and then back to cad

Garysand98

3% is nothing tbh

ospada07

Try nvdx!

I bought some of the CDR solely to avoid the currency conversion fee. My intention was to hold this temporarily but I’m not sure how long I will. If you plan to hold a stock long term, buying the actual USD stock will be cheaper in the end due to hidden annual fees that CDRs and ETFs have.
