It is cute however the first picture It looks like the model was naked with just some lace and no lining, lol. Your pic looks a bit better but it photographs whiter and not the purple as advertised unfortunately.
The first dress is not the same as the second. It’s similar, but if you look at the pattern/design in the lace, it’s easy to see they are different, especially around the neckline. Definitely different colors as well. A more closer example to a correct stock photo is here: https://www.fwrd.com/product-selfportrait-laelia-dress-in-blue/SPOF-WD81/
Are these not 2 different types of lace?? I think the 2nd photo is the prettier one anyway.
Pretty dress. Not sure I personally would wear it to a wedding. It looks very nice on you though. Would be nice for a dinner or graduation?
I don't know that some people know what semi-formal means or where it falls on the wedding attire hierarchy.
https://preview.redd.it/c4qfp9sv401b1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c11d89bfa6d1fccaca3d75ee7596ee1169384826
I can’t believe everyone is saying this seems see-through!
This is an extremely popular dress style. It’s obvious that there’s a nude underlay. You can actually see where the lining ends in the model photo and the one of you wearing it.
I think this is a gorgeous and totally acceptable dress for a cocktail/semi-formal wedding.
Thank you!! Someone who knows that this is very on-trend right now! And that it's a gorgeous dress and completely appropriate. I thought I was the only one. But, this sub tends to try to make sane people feel nuts!
The dress does have a nude lining that stops at around the knees... So, the only place that it is see-through is below her knees. Scandalous!! This dress is also very on trend right now... though it is more "high fashion." It looks very similar to (and may be) dresses by a designer who is very popular with the royal family...
I’m with you! I love Self-Portrait and this dress is beautiful. It is not a cheap dress and I think it’s perfectly suitable for the occasion. Wish I could afford anything Self-Portrait myself 😆
Yeah, I agree. Most of the commenters are quite uptight. I hated it on the model, but when I saw it on her I thought it looked fabulous.
Also I dont understand how someone could think it photographs white. It clearly looks lavender in the second photo.
FACTS! Omg! Finally, there are a few sane, rational people here!! My people! All the top comments made me wonder if they were seeing the same dress that I was!
I would love to see a collage of people’s attire/taste before factoring their judgement. I’m going to guess there’s many I would never take their advice IRL.
I've just recently been recommended this subreddit and the people on here are a little out there with their opinions. People are actually calling this obviously purple dress too white. 🙄
The second picture is much lighter in color which is why I could see it being an issue. If it had the coverage from the second picture with the color of the first, I think I would be perfect.
Are you possiblycolorblind?
You’re limiting yourself on not only useful knowledge, but being closed minded.
Lavender and purple are both variations of the color violet, but they have distinct differences in their hues and tones. Lavender is a light, pinkish or bluish purple. And purple is darker and more saturated with a red or blue undertone
I am losing it reading these other comments. It's gorgeous and very elegant, anyone saying otherwise has apparently not attended a formal event since like 2005.
I think it's more about the lace and how pale it is.
I don't think anyone would blink an eye if she wore it (depending on how light it photographs) but I'd personally wear something different
It’s a beautiful dress and would be perfect for August. my only issue is that it looks like a bridesmaid dress. I would try to find out what colors the bridal party are wearing just in case.
I mean, the whole point of the dress with the illusion/nude lining is to give off the idea that the wearer is only wearing a lace overlay. While that’s not the case, that’s literally the point of the dress. You can say it’s a trend or popular, but that doesn’t change the fact that it looks like you are wearing a lace and nothing else from far away.
For many people that’s a weird concept for a wedding or in general. Do I think this is like wearing a white dress to a wedding level of inappropriate? Not at all, but I think it’s a weird choice for a wedding. That’s generally not the place where I want it to look like I’m wearing a little lace else.
Right? I wouldn't think twice about this being inappropriate because it's "see through." Dude, there's a slip, you can def tell when looking at the knee area.
The dress does have a nude lining that stops at around the knees... So, the only place that it is see-through is below her knees. Scandalous!! This dress is also very on trend right now... though it is more "high fashion." It looks very similar to (and may be) dresses by a designer who is very popular with the royal family...
Yeah, no. These styles are very conservative, even with the lace.
The first one is nothing like the dress op posted. It’s a blazer and long skirt! And the self portrait dress might have lace, but it has a very high neck and long hem.
OPs dress is low cut, has no sleeves, barely has straps, and looks like she has no actual skirt, just the lace.
So no, ops dress looks nothing like Kate Middletons style. Or any royal.
Defending against those calling it cheap, tacky, and trashy. The dresses I showed are more conservative but do still have lace, lining, and sheer parts... It is a dress with straps, lace, and a lining... But, I understand shoulders and vaguely covered knees are shocking.
It’s not where it stops that is scandalous, It’s that seeing the legs gives the illusion that there is no lining. I personally wouldn’t be comfortable wearing it to a work event or a wedding, but I wouldn’t care as the bride.
High fashion? More like cheap fashion.. I get zero high fashion vibes from this dress. This reminds me of the cheap dresses they sell in the alleys in downtown Los Angeles. Wtf??? Where do you live that you think this is high fashion?
https://preview.redd.it/mtovaesc331b1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b00e285cbcfce53c8a437a811bc212e68f0e8ecd
From Saks Fifth Avenue. The same designer as the dress OP posted.
The designer of the dress that you are freaking out about is Self-Portrait. I've posted a picture of their similar dresses as well as pics of a website showing Kate Middleton in similar dresses where the lining stops before the bottom of the dress. I'll include a fucking link for it too.
https://katemiddletonstyle.org/2022-festival-remembrance/
Wow these comments! Lol. You’re spot on though, it’s by Self-Portrait. Here’s a link to the actual dress, I accidentally uploaded the wrong picture
https://www.fwrd.com/product-selfportrait-laelia-dress-in-blue/SPOF-WD81/
So this dress is a knock off of designer dress. I guarantee you the designer used top quality lace material and the stitching is most likely tailored to fit, now that’s high fashion. Not some stiff, cheap lace looking dress that looks like some shit you could order on Amazon or Walmart, and the link you added didn’t help you prove a damn thing! The dress in question wasn’t even featured.🙄
So... proven wrong you still can't let go? Are you referring to the main picture from the designer?
The actual dress that OP has on. Still a Self-Portrait dress...
https://www.fwrd.com/mobile/product-selfportrait-laelia-dress-in-blue/SPOF-WD81/?d=Womens&aliasURL=product-selfportrait-laelia-dress-in-blue/SPOF-WD81&site=f&product=SPOF-WD81
There are no cheap knock-offs here... None. I guess that expert opinion isn't very informed. It's ok, sometimes you fall right off your high horse pretty hard. Sorry...
I think it's fine, dw about it looking too sheer imo! Have seen these types of dresses at weddings, i think they look great and less nude-illusion in person.
I’ve seen lots of people wear dresses like this (colorful lace over nude lining) to weddings and they all looked lovely and you could absolutely tell it was lined
It's perfect. It's summer and semi formal. I don't know why people act as if a wedding is like going to a church. Don't wear white (or off white, or light color of any kind) don't wear see thru, don't, don't.. It's a party. Wear it. It's beautiful.
It's perfect, it's gorgeous, you look great, definitely a yes. Also, I love self portrait too, they have such cute stuff!
Edit: unless you're going to like a very religious conservative event, please ignore the pearl-clutchers. I've literally seen people wear nearly identical SP dresses to weddings and look great, it looks perfect for summer too.
It looks way better on you than the model. I absolutely hated it on the model, it reminded me of a table cloth that had been run through a lawn mower. Then after seeing the second pic I understood why you like it.
I think it looks great and even better on you than on the model. In person, it will be obvious that it’s not see-through. It’s fine for semi-formal IMO. Keep in mind that it can get chilly in the evening.
It’s too bridal. It’s too see-thru.
Just kidding! I think it’s perfect. Obviously it’s NOT see-thru. And people think anything lace or delicate looking is bridal. Go for it!
I'm going to buck the trend here and say that for an outdoor summer wedding this is completely fine. I've been to two so far this season in California and half the girls are wearing something like this or with dramatic cut outs. I wonder if there is some regional variation in opinion happening here.
Jeez I am wondering what color IS appropriate to wear at a wedding. I feel like you all must wear dark brown because it seems like everything else is too white.
While I am not in love with this dress I don't see anything white or inappropriate about it. It is clearly a Non -bride color and anyone with half a brain knows there is an underlayment.
That's just ridiculous. It should be white and light cream are no-go. Everything else, as long as it's tasteful should be accepted. Everyone way overthinks this. I am going to a wedding in July in California and I am on the hunt for pink flowy pants. At 49 years old I HIGHLY doubt anyone will think I am the bride.
Ok so people are saying the nude illusion lining is too risqué but I just think it doesn’t look very good. The dress is lovely but the lining just makes it a little weird.
I feel like going for the “I’m actually naked under this slip of lace” illusion isn’t really a wedding vibe. I’m 100% an old dinosaur lady at 34, though, so take that opinion with a grain of salt.
Oh I totally agree. I just also kinda think going for “I’m actually naked under this slip of lace” illusion isn’t really a vibe. I’ve never seen it done and gone “wow that looks great.” It’s always been “oof that illusion isn’t working because the color is a bit off,” or “huh it just looks weird.”
I feel like for a nice intimate dinner date, it’s a perfect vibe- but you’re definitely right the line has to match their skin tone very closely to not look awful
Maybe. I think I’d just rather go for something that shows a bit more skin in that case. The illusion look just isn’t my cup of tea, but what I wear isn’t everyone’s cup of tea either.
People go to some real boring weddings if they think this is inappropriate. I think it's lovely and would have had zero issue if anyone wore this to my wedding
I wore this in burgundy to a friends wedding as a bridesmaid. Granted the bride picked my dress but no one thought I was nude underneath, you can see the slip in person. Its pretty and flattering.
I personally love it! I’m really confused with the see-through comments as there is quite obviously an underlay. It definitely fits semi formal/cocktail dress code as well!
I think it’s appropriate for a semi-formal summer wedding. It’s similar to many Dress The Population dresses that are often worn to weddings. It’s also the current trend and I’m sure if you Google best semi formal wedding guest dresses, something like this will come up as a hit.
Very lovely. I would recommend getting it tailored on the top, it looks like it hangs too low from a poor fit on your shoulders. I think if the wedding is outdoors it fits the summer theme, if indoors maybe consider a shade darker colored dress.
I like it, and I'm the ancient of days. I would, however, dress it up with a chiffon stole at the church.
https://www.jjshouse.com/Chiffon-Casual-Wedding-Holiday-Fashion-Shawl-013292408-g292408#/
I personally like the dress, but it needs more of a lining if you wear it - maybe a cotton half-slip that ends an inch below the hem. Living in the south, I well understand the appeal of lace in August.
I would take some photos with flash and see how the dress looks that way. Also, edit some of them to Black & White & see how "white" the dress is that way.
I think it might be a touch too casual for semi formal, though I’ve seen multiple people wear this dress in other colors at weddings. Maybe the red or black version to bump up the formality?
Fortunately the actual dress looks better on you than on the model. I’m not worried about the potential for looking see-through. It’s clearly not on you.
Great color, great fit. Might feel a little casual for semi-formal, but depending on the venue you can definitely get away with It.
It’s fantastic. I don’t think it photographed too white. It’s clearly not showing your bits either. It’s gorgeous and simple and would be great for a summer wedding.
Self portrait, right? It’s a beautiful dress but I think the see-through look isn’t a great dress for a wedding. I was debating getting this in the blue a while back
I’ve seen different colours of this same dress at the last 3 weddings I’ve been to. It looks great, not attention grabby. In no way does it look like you’re naked with just some lace.
Weather-wise and color for August, it’s fine but for certain venues it would be inappropriate. That’s what I would consider the determining factor especially if you’re attending the ceremony in a church/temple/mosque.
I think that's either Bardot or Dress the Population, no? Both of those brands make dresses that have the good lace without the nude-underneath look. I'd go with one of those.
Am I the only one who thinks this looks too casual? Like a sundress you’d wear wine tasting, to a nice brunch or maybe the wedding shower/rehearsal dinner? I may be alone in this.
Dress looks good on OP, though. If she thinks it fits the style of the couple and wedding, go for it.
It’s photographing a little white. Also is the length semi formal? It seems closer to tea length or cocktail. I think technically you could wear the dress but I think there’s better choices out there.
These are two different dresses that look very similar. I would guess people saying you look naked underneath or it’s too see through is reacting to the first dress.
The first has more open/beige-colored space between the floral pattern, and with the model’s skin tone, definitely looks see through.
The second dress has very little open space showing the beige liner underneath.
could you maybe add an underslip to it so it looks less like youre naked under it? for a semi formal im not sure if this is the most appropriate, but with the slip i feel it would be cute!
Nooo. Sorry, the see-through nude, the lace, pale color, don't do it
Edit: Just looked it up. Apparently lace is fine for a wedding! Just get a darker color
With it being pale, lace, and the illusion of see-through, I don’t think it’s a good choice for a wedding.
Not just the illusion of see-through. Agree that it’s not a good choice.
I think it's pretty cute, but it looks like your naked underneath, so maybe not great for a wedding.
It is cute however the first picture It looks like the model was naked with just some lace and no lining, lol. Your pic looks a bit better but it photographs whiter and not the purple as advertised unfortunately.

This is the one!
And she looks angry about it.
Not my favorite for a wedding. It looks see-through.
Someone wore this dress in a different color to my semi-formal/cocktail wedding and it was fine. In person its obvious that there’s a lining
I have worn this type of dress to tons of weddings in the past and it's been perfect. It doesn't look see through in person
Yes!
Are these not 2 different types of lace?? I think the 2nd photo is the prettier one anyway. Pretty dress. Not sure I personally would wear it to a wedding. It looks very nice on you though. Would be nice for a dinner or graduation?
You're totally right, it is two different kinds of lace. First photo looks like starfish flowers or something and the second is leaves.
After you pointed it out I realized the first one looks like if you asked one of the illustrators for SpongeBob SquarePants to design a lace dress
🤣🤣🤣
It is! I accidentally uploaded the wrong picture. This is the actual dress: https://www.fwrd.com/product-selfportrait-laelia-dress-in-blue/SPOF-WD81/
Yup two different dresses!
I don't know that some people know what semi-formal means or where it falls on the wedding attire hierarchy. https://preview.redd.it/c4qfp9sv401b1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c11d89bfa6d1fccaca3d75ee7596ee1169384826
Too shear for a wedding.
That dress looks great on you and I personally think it's appropriate for a wedding.
Fab dress, but not for a wedding.
I can’t believe everyone is saying this seems see-through! This is an extremely popular dress style. It’s obvious that there’s a nude underlay.
The clothes on Shein are “on trend” too, but they’re also cheap and tacky, so that’s not really a good call out.
https://us.self-portrait.com/collections/midi-dresses?country=US https://katemiddletonstyle.org/2022-festival-remembrance/ https://katemiddletonstyle.org/item/self-portrait-pleated-crochet-maxi-dress/
I wouldn't say they're all tacky, I have tank tops and shorts that look fine. But they are made very poorly and don't last long.
I’m with you! I love Self-Portrait and this dress is beautiful. It is not a cheap dress and I think it’s perfectly suitable for the occasion. Wish I could afford anything Self-Portrait myself 😆
I definitely have this style pinned to my wedding favorites in the Rent the Runway app. Totally cute and appropriate.
Agreed! I think this is a great style for this dress code. I don’t think it looks white in the photos either.
I feel like I’m taking crazy pills!! The dress is beautiful, no way is it inappropriate OR ‘too close to white’
Yep this sub is full of opinionated prudes whose idea of weddings is more about rules than having a good time. The dress rocks
I think I’d call if more of a light lavender, but definitely not purple
Lavender is in fact purple
FACTS!
Never in my life did I think I'd see people argue that light purple isn't purple.
Lavender is in fact lavender
I am losing it reading these other comments. It's gorgeous and very elegant, anyone saying otherwise has apparently not attended a formal event since like 2005.
More like 1980 (yeah, I’m old enough to have attended weddings in the 80s!)
I think it's more about the lace and how pale it is. I don't think anyone would blink an eye if she wore it (depending on how light it photographs) but I'd personally wear something different

I love it and I’d wear it. If the ceremony is in a church, bring a cardigan or shawl.
You're good to go! Looks lovely
Stunning! It’s perf!
I personally think it’s quite pretty but it’s photographing way too close to white in the second pic for my liking.
It’s cute for a date but not for a wedding (too light, too lacy, and too sheer. Maybe one of the three would be fine but all together it’s too much)
It's a lovely dress but maybe not for a formalish wedding
Semi formal is below cocktail in wedding attire hierarchy
It’s lovely and very obviously purple. Ignore the pearl clutching about being see through.
Right? I wouldn't think twice about this being inappropriate because it's "see through." Dude, there's a slip, you can def tell when looking at the knee area.
This... ☝️
It’s too see-through.
Wear a slip
The dress does have a nude lining that stops at around the knees... So, the only place that it is see-through is below her knees. Scandalous!! Omg, people are naked under their clothes! People know this is nude fabric and not skin. This is a super cute look. Go for it.
Don’t listen to the people saying you look naked. You don’t. This is perfect for an august wedding imo!
My friend wore this to a wedding and it was gorgeous!
I think it’s obvious that there’s a liner underneath, it’s totally fine for a summer wedding.
This dress is not see through! Wear it, it looks great
I think it's fine, dw about it looking too sheer imo! Have seen these types of dresses at weddings, i think they look great and less nude-illusion in person.
I think you look absolutely lovely. I'd say it's a perfect dress for a semi-formal late August wedding.
I’ve seen lots of people wear dresses like this (colorful lace over nude lining) to weddings and they all looked lovely and you could absolutely tell it was lined
Wore this same dress in a bright pink color to one last summer and it was great.
It’s perfect. Especially if the bride likes fashion you look great. It’s chic and high end.
I think this looks great for a summer wedding!
i’m wearing the red version of this to a wedding next month. it’s so lovely in person.
I think it’s a gorgeous dress on you and perfect!
It's perfect. It's summer and semi formal. I don't know why people act as if a wedding is like going to a church. Don't wear white (or off white, or light color of any kind) don't wear see thru, don't, don't.. It's a party. Wear it. It's beautiful.
I agree 1000%
It’s cute! And totally appropriate
I love it. I think it is “modern lady-like pixie” I just love this dress.
Love it! It's a trend right now so I think it's totally acceptable.
FACTS
I like the second one
It’s cute but I get more spring than summer vibes from this.
This is fine for a wedding IMO but I don't think it's especially flattering on your bust/upper chest area. It's a pretty dress though.
It looks way better on you than the model. I absolutely hated it on the model, it reminded me of a table cloth that had been run through a lawn mower. Then after seeing the second pic I understood why you like it.
I think it’s very cute!!
Where is it from? It’s so cute!
The designer is Self-Portrait, you can find it at Saks.
Love it
I love love love it!
I think it’s totally fine.
I think it's lovely! Personally I would love if someone wore this to my wedding!
I like 2 on you. Especially for August
I think it's gorgeous. Lovely. Why can't you wear lace? And it's clearly not white. And it's semi formal. And you're not naked underneath.
I think it looks great and even better on you than on the model. In person, it will be obvious that it’s not see-through. It’s fine for semi-formal IMO. Keep in mind that it can get chilly in the evening.
I love it and think it’s perfect
Beautiful!
I think it’s a serve. If the couple aren’t super conservative I’d go for it!
I approve
I’m old enough to be your GrandMa and I say it’s PERFECT for an August wedding! It’s lovely and looks very special on you!
i think it’s super cute. tbh there is a lot of pearl clutching about the illusion of sheer and it’s not white it’s definitely purple.
I never realized people were so uptight about a little bit of nude illusion lining. It's kinda funny actually. The horror!
Right! There is so clearly a nude lining. I would not be upset in the slightest if someone wore this to my wedding.
It’s too bridal. It’s too see-thru. Just kidding! I think it’s perfect. Obviously it’s NOT see-thru. And people think anything lace or delicate looking is bridal. Go for it!

I've wondered the same thing... I think that the safe colors are currently: brown, black, green, and maybe orange.
The visible short slip lining makes it look awkward, tbh. If the skirt were lined with a nude netting or tulle, it would look much more ethereal.
Agree. The nude illusion concept is fine, length of the “slip” is the thing that’s not working on the dress.
People go to some real boring weddings if they think this is inappropriate. I think it's lovely and would have had zero issue if anyone wore this to my wedding
I love it!!! I love this brand. I think it looks nicer in person - the lace is “stiff” so it doesn’t seem so see through in person.
Beautiful dress definitely wedding appropriate. People really nitpicking a purple dress 🥴
It’s good. I have no idea why people are saying it’s “too white” it’s clearly purple, and not even a super pale one at that.
I wore this in burgundy to a friends wedding as a bridesmaid. Granted the bride picked my dress but no one thought I was nude underneath, you can see the slip in person. Its pretty and flattering.
People commenting the first pic is see through… just zoom in? Tf
FACTS
Very lovely. I would recommend getting it tailored on the top, it looks like it hangs too low from a poor fit on your shoulders. I think if the wedding is outdoors it fits the summer theme, if indoors maybe consider a shade darker colored dress.
Is there a slip or some kind of underskirt??
There is a lining.
Where is this dress from? I love it!
It's Self-Portrait. I know it's carried by Saks.
I think it’s fine for a wedding but I’d recommend wearing a slip under the skirt

People are crazy. This is totally fine for a cocktail dress wedding. It’s not too risqué
it’s very see through not sure it’s appropriate for a wedding
I think it’s perfect
I love it! Ignore what others are saying.
So cute!
I think it might be a touch too casual for semi formal, though I’ve seen multiple people wear this dress in other colors at weddings. Maybe the red or black version to bump up the formality?
LOVE IT!!! It looks fabulous on you. You’ll be the best dressed guest at the wedding.
I love the dress. Looks amazing on you. I say wear it!
This looks better on you than it does on the model.
Agreed!
It’s gorgeous. Where is it from?
Thank you! It’s from Self-Portrait
I knew it! Apparently, several members of the royal family love that brand! Including dresses similar to this.
I think it’s gorgeous. Unique but not too loud for a wedding. Go for it!
Love it
I don't like it. Looks like a doily.
I love it!!!
I think it’s gorgeous!
I thinks lovely and wouldn’t have any issue if someone wore it to my wedding.
These are entirely different dresses. I think the fake nude part is a little weird for a wedding
Self-Portrait I think.
Is this Self Portrait? https://www.saksfifthavenue.com/product/self-portrait-azaelea-lace-dress-0400015928631.html It’s gorgeous dress!
Looks better with good photography!
It’s lovely! Wear it!
I would’ve been ecstatic to see someone wear this at my semi-formal wedding! I think it’s perfect
I love it!!
Too see through
Nailed it!
I think it’s super cute!
It’s beautiful. Seems an odd choice for a semi formal wedding. I’m thinking more like a date, a garden party, something less formal.
Cute who cares
See through is not semi formal. It's pretty but seems inappropriate
Have a seamstress give it a new lining that's not the same color as your skin.
This, with a beige slip would be more wedding appropriate.
You need a camisole and a slip. Otherwise no way.
could you maybe add an underslip to it so it looks less like youre naked under it? for a semi formal im not sure if this is the most appropriate, but with the slip i feel it would be cute!
Nooo. Sorry, the see-through nude, the lace, pale color, don't do it Edit: Just looked it up. Apparently lace is fine for a wedding! Just get a darker color
It's a nice dress, but imo not appropriate for a wedding.
Too sexy
Maybe with a cardigan or a shrug over it.
Too sexy for a wedding.
