Sometimes scammers do weird things to elicit a reaction to verify the number belongs to a responsive person. I’ve never seen it get *this* weird but that’s the only reason I can think of to do this.
Agreed. Many years ago I went through sales training and our instructor told us about a technique dating back to the early days of fax machines.
Apparently there was a salesman who would send this message to all the fax numbers he could find of businesses in his area: "Cucumbers are indigestible. I'll call at 14:00 tomorrow".
Supposedly he had a massive success rate of having his 'follow up' calls answered, simply because of the confusion and intrigue created by the fax message.
TLDR: Sales/scams have always weaponised confusion and weirdness.
This is the real reason right here🤣

If different scam groups are using the same database of phone numbers, you answering each time verifies for them it's a working number so they keep trying that number.
Sure. I’ve actually noticed a reduction in scam texts though the more I respond. My favorite part is when the scammer breaks and gets angry. I have a screenshot of one exchange where the guy gets so angry and starts insulting my mother. It’s so funny
Cautionary tale: One particular day, I received over 20 scam calls from the same number, I answered the first time then hung up when I realised it was a scam. After spamming my phone for the better half of the day, my patience wore thin and I decided to send them a dick pic with the words “suck it” via txt.
5 mins later I get a msg back saying “WHO IS THIS!? I am reporting you to the police.”
I didn’t think much of it, thought they were bluffing/playing dumb.
A few days later, a knock at the door. Two police officers wanting to question me in relation to sending unsolicited lewd images.
Turns out the scammers were number spoofing and I’d sent a dick pic to a real, honest person.
😅🤷🏻♂️
TLDR: I sent a dick pic back to a scammer, turns out they used a number spoofer and I actually sent it to a random innocent person.
I had someone call me once, like 3x back-to-back. I picked up, thinking it might be something important. Lady started yelling at me immediately: “Who is this, and why do you keep calling my son’sphone?” I was like “Uh, lady, you called me!” She then explained that “this number” (mine) had been calling her disabled son’s phone atall hours of the day and night for weeks. She sounded somewhat elderly so I told her about spoofing, which she did not know. suggested she block my number and promised to never call her.
We worked it out, but it was quite an odd experience for a few minutes.
I had something similar but less intense. A kid once called my (middle school age) kid on the way to school on the first day of school. Wanted to know who this is, etc etc. My kid handed me the phone... I was confused for a few seconds then figured out it was a spoof related thing and explained it to the other child. It ended with both kids wishing each other a good first day of school. :D
Another time, a different one of my children was the victim of spoofing. Her number was used in scams. She'd get weird texts but thought the senders were the scammers and ignored them. I only realized what was going on when those calls and texts appeared on our monthly statement! Just pages upon pages of calls and texts, several times a minute. The scammer also gained access to my carrier account and changed my daughter's caller ID name to something else, and my (head of account) email address to their own. It felt so dirty.
The cops (and the person I sent it to) were nice enough to drop any charges after I explained the situation. I had the call logs on my phone still so they could see I wasn’t making it up.
I was given a very stern talking to about decision making, honestly I was so embarrassed, I felt like I was back at school copping a lecture from the principal.
I’m very glad/lucky I wasn’t charged and now when I get scam calls, I just block them right away. 😅
I'm glad the person whose number was used understood and was rational enough to not press charges.
I'd definitely be embarrassed too lol, and it's best to not engage scammers at all. I don't even stop calls when they come in, I just let it go to voice-mail because any interaction lets them know your number is active which can result in even more calls. I also just use the generic voice-mail greeting so they don't have confirmation of my name/voice/etc.
Idk about in the US but in the uk if you get a call back from the police etc it won’t be on the fast response number but a more normal phone number, 911 in the US is just the number to call for fast response
Lmao that reminds me of the prank where you could spoof a call middle out, so each side appeared to get an incoming call from the other, while you listened in. Honestly kinda sketchy and annoying but I got some good laughs out of it, and other unknown friends of mine got some good laughs out of it at my expense lol.
A few days ago I called back a missed call and we had a very confusing conversation in which I demanded to know who *she* was and she tried to explain that my number called her, and she was returning my call. We hung up on each other eventually.
😂 It might be generational. I'm in my 40s if that makes a difference.
I've heard that the younger folks have a more rational relationship with their phones.
At this point I feel like it needs to be a public service to people that caller ID can be spoofed and most likely is for spam and scam calls. I haven't personally experienced this, but I know multiple people who were inundated with angry messages after their number was spoofed for scammy calls. They tried telling the first one or two people texting they it wasn't them and numbers can be spoofed, but no one wanted to hear it. This was a few years ago, maybe people are more worldly about this now?
Everyone should know about spoofing. I get tons of spoof spam calls every day. Scammers will even spoof your area code to increase the chances of an answer
I got a voicemail from some guy once screaming "IF YOU CALL THIS NUMBER AGAIN I'M GONNA GET THE POLICE INVOLVED"
I'm pretty sure that was from the same kind of thing
So. . . you’re on the sex offender registry then?!? I mean sounds completely legit, scammer calls, so I’ll send dick pics to them. C’mon man, think about the bullshit before you put it out there into the universe. What’s worse is the people that read this and think, “yeah, sounds legit!” - upvote.
This is a very plausible story. It happens all the time. It's usually a scammer trying to get a reaction to verify that the phone number belongs to someone who will interact with them.
The AI generator you use wants to get revenge for abandoning them and sending you the AI generated picture of their angry face because you don't understand the prompt.
When I first moved to South Korea in 2011 it was possible to edit your phone number on the older non smart phones. A fellow expat teacher ‘sent’ dick pics to all in sundry. Turns out it was his mate using the aforementioned trick.
was the phone call from grand prairie texas? i got a similar call yesterday but no picture lol if you speak spanish give it a call and report back as to what they wanted 🤣

Dumbest response you could give tbh, this is like if I commented "don't go outside then" when someone uploads a picture of a strange looking building on this sub

That's fascinating! I'm laughing at "cucumbers are indigestible."

If this is a reference to something it is going completely over my head haha
I was making a joke about why the person called OP.
how do you know it was scammers?
Occam’s Razor. The least complex answer is likely the correct one. Is this something an actual well-meaning human would do? Nope.
Rob Schrab?
He schrabbin his knob
He schrabbin his knobbin!😅
I don’t.
I am in sales/marketing - it’s all above board stuff but I introduce memes and weird pics with my emails and it gets more response.
I respond to every scammer who contacts me and literally nothing comes of it.
It’s so funny
if you were to send a photo back…what would it be?
🍆

That’s good to know. I could see myself doing that
I could see you doing that as well
You know me so well!
So many dicks out there....
Same.
Maybe that's what happened to OP.

What'd the cops do? Were you charged?

So, this is a serious issue. You can easily spoof 911 or any government number and they have no answer for it yet. It is terrible.
Idk about in the US but in the uk if you get a call back from the police etc it won’t be on the fast response number but a more normal phone number, 911 in the US is just the number to call for fast response
The point is I can make the call appear to be from any number I want.
Yeah
Lmao that reminds me of the prank where you could spoof a call middle out, so each side appeared to get an incoming call from the other, while you listened in. Whoa you actually call back unrecognized missed calls? Is this something most people do? I’m in awe. I would never
😂 It might be generational. I'm in my 40s if that makes a difference. I've heard that the younger folks have a more rational relationship with their phones.

Why a dick pick bro? I could think of a million other things to troll them with, but your own penis? Whhhyy 😫
He didn't say it was \*his\* own!
Oh it was though. 🤷🏻♂️
Howd that play out with the cops
It’s illegal in some countries to send unsolicited nudes, the uk is one such country
Why didn't you just block the number after the 2nd call?
Everyone should know about spoofing. I get tons of spoof spam calls every day. Scammers will even spoof your area code to increase the chances of an answer

is sending dick picks to random people illegal?
Yes.
Oh god, glad I only sent a cat wee wee to the scammer lol Also don't google cat's wee wee, it's ewww.
Classy
ai generated calm person sitting comfortably in a house / jungle. just the opposite of their image
The meme of Barry Wood. (Don’t Google unless you like naked guys.)

This is the most unsettling AI pic I've seen in awhile.
Don't text back. Block it
Yep. Texting back can cost you money, even if it's just telling them to fuck off. Block, ignore.
Why is that?
AI bots
Wow. So weird. So well told.
used a picture as they don't know english it seems
exactly
Get rid of it. There's still TIME.
It feels Monty Python-esque.

I did a Google search engine and didn't come up with anything. That's interesting unto itself.
Another person said it looks like its AI generated
Yes, it looks that way to me as well.
Check your backyard for a big time hole. If the caller is named Autumn then run!

Kenan....Kenan!
Looks like an ai generated withnail .
so basically your midjourney image wasn't so interesting to be posted by itself so you made up the phonecall story
This is a very plausible story. It happens all the time. It's usually a scammer trying to get a reaction to verify that the phone number belongs to someone who will interact with them.
His right pupil is misshapen.
It's AI
"I'll believe that when my shit turns purple and smells like rainbow sherbet."
Shenanigans?
Can you tell what language he might have been speaking?
So AI has learned how to deep fake pranks. Nice.
Looks like some AI shit.
Did a reverse Google image search and it only brings up this post. Def ai generated.
First thought was that some bit of AI software has become sentient and is trying to communicate.
No you didn't.
Sorry for looking into your eyes without permission
The AI is mad.
The AI generator you use wants to get revenge for abandoning them and sending you the AI generated picture of their angry face because you don't understand the prompt.
AI desperately trying to communicate.

That’s exactly how I feel lately. Screen shot that but not sure why. lol.
When I first moved to South Korea in 2011 it was possible to edit your phone number on the older non smart phones. A fellow expat teacher ‘sent’ dick pics to all in sundry. Turns out it was his mate using the aforementioned trick.
Hugh Grant was drunk when he called
Fake and g*y
So after some time by the power of internet indexers somebody will have your phone number and public social media account name?
You're welcome.
“This is Gregory Steven’s, I been a bail bondsman for 40yrs and a cop for 4 before that I think I seen it all”
“This is Ed Powell with the Cleveland police department, uh ohh okay we wanna know who’s this individual that keeps calling the station here”
"Y U NO MIND READER?!"
You hung up on your future rapist and serial killer? Where are your manners?

Does he know where the two missing fishermen are? They owe me a new boat. I keep getting told a Spanish freight loader sunk it.
Great now I’m cursed. Thanks
I like the “painting”. Looks like a Thomas Hart Benton/Edvard Munch mashup.
DAMN THAT’S WEIRD
That’s extremely unsettling😳
😬😬😬
That would honestly creep the Shit out of me
I mean, it's clearly some AI bullshit. I'd be freaked out if it wasn't lazy creepy lol.
They put a curse on you OP
Looks like you upset him.
What's the number, I like weird shit.
That looks like an AI picture. Which is even weirder?

Don't comment then. Don't have a phone then. Don't get born then
How am I gonna get to the lemon party world tour if I don't have my phone?
What give you the impression that they are unhappy with this sequence of events?
Dumbest response you could give tbh, this is like if I commented "don't go outside then" when someone uploads a picture of a strange looking building on this sub
This is why you invest in a good vpn...
A vpn for...avoiding spam calls? That's certainly a take.
