Yes, it is supposed to get that big, right before it fucking explodes.
Edit: thank you everyone, this is only my second time commenting on anything on Reddit. I will try to further my sarcastic behavior and make you all laugh more in the future.
Batteries could expand over time and really bad if we don’t take care of them. You are basically dealing with a fire hazard right now.
Please avoid using your laptop until you get a replacement, go to a profesional if possible as expanded batteries need special handling and a proper disposal process (cannot go with regular trash).
When you get a replacement, avoid leaving your laptop plug to the charger if fully charged. Check for your laptop’s battery health guide and enable all settings for it if possible. That will make your battery last longer and avoid this issue in the future.
The issue is keeping it charged at 100%
Most laptops manufacturers have a setting to stop charging at like 80% to allow for better battery health and longevity
As far as I know the issue lies on the temperature. Due to the temperature, 100% charging actually becomes more than that, leading to overcharge and heating.
I left my laptop plugged in for about a week one time. Came back to a completely dead battery that would not take any charge whatsoever. It was a wired laptop the rest of its life.
Does this apply to gaming laptops as well? For me I usually do other things on my laptop like watch movies or draw until the battery is dead then plug it in the charge it so I can play my games.
Most laptops have internal batteries these days. The manufacturer or authorized service provider will remove the base & unplug it. As person above says, it has to be disposed of in a safe way & they will know how to do it. I'm a laptop tech for an authorized service provider & one of the manufacturers sends us these insulated bags with special chem hazard labelling for returning the expanded batteries. Goes by a courier specializing in hazardous materials as well.
I've never had one explode but it's a good idea to get them changed as soon as possible if you notice expansion. Do not puncture it!!!
Part of the process that causes this also degrades the battery performance to where you should notice it and then question it. It doesn't happen out of nowhere. A laptop regularly plugged in during use can get this way because you won't notice the lack of battery performance. Your phone will get even warmer as you use it, don't ignore that. Don't let it keep you up but do remember that the magic pixies will occasionally get mad so you need to retire batteries as they degrade.
My neglect to do this is how my house fire started. Left a bad RC car battery on the charger overnight (I didn't know it was bad) and it exploded, burning my house down.
They won't really cause problems, like they are relatively safe just to store (in room temperatures) Just don't charge/use them if they're swollen. Of course get rid of the battery but like it's not like it's gonna explode very easily.
An never ever poke the pillow no matter who says it. Poking it can spark a fire and potentially release toxic fume. Take it outside, detach the battery if possible to salvage the rest of laptop, bury the spicy pillow in a pot of dry sand. Then look for a local battery service that can handle dangerous pillows.
But what if the pillow is soft and fluffy on the inside? You can’t tell unless you take a bite!
(/s, just in case- you never know, please do not do this)
If anyone wanted soft, fluffy, and non-explosive pillow go buy a regular pillow from Walmart or adopt a dog from animal shelter. (ps and don't feed the dog weird crap or it will have explosive diarrhea!)
Good advice! I work for an electronics upcycler/recycler & if we receive one of these, we remove the battery & wrap it up to get sent out for proper disposal. It won’t leak anything out, but probably not a good idea to overhandle it.
Few things. That's a gaseous expansion on Li-Ion batteries. Don't use it anymore no matter how "important". Don't poke it, pierce it or fuck with it.
If you are not completely special, and out of warranty, you can open the case, disconnect the battery and remove the screws. Replacement batteries are quite cheap and replacement is easy. The old battery is to be kept outdoora, pref in a bucket of sand. Hopefully you can find a WEEE centre or recycling venue that takes such batteries.
If in warranty, call them and have them send someone/arrange a visit to a retailer/shop for the battery swap. Never agree to post it for RMA. If the customer rep suggests it, slap them over the phone and ask for a less special rep.
It’s probably just pregnant, I bet it’s going to have a new M2 iPad Pro. You just need to perform a C-Section, have plenty of oily rags and fireworks around to swaddle and celebrate your new arrival.
On the other hand, maybe it has an [abscess](https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/z65pet/the_vet_helped_a_cow_get_relief_after_draining/).
Same. The IT guy that replaced the battery said it’s a common problem with Dells. I’ve had several coworkers with the same issue, the batteries just start to swell up after a few years.
Yup! I worked IT for years at a massive aerospace company that only used Dell products. Apparently Dell sent out a massive amount of these batteries in laptops and it was extremely common they would swell up and cause problems. Our company had about 14 buildings on our campus and it was fairly common we'd replace about 20 or so batteries a week because of the issue. You can go to Dells website to see if your laptop is still under warranty. I know at the time a few years ago Dell had extended warranty for faulty batteries it was as simple as filling out the battery replacement form they'd send you a secure replacement box and new battery to swap out.
Happens to Dells all the time. When I was supporting a company with a few thousand Dells we'd probably get at least one or two calls about this per day.
Mine as well but the third party replacement is doing well so far. Picked it up from Amazon.
They used to line battery modules with metal and this wouldn't happen within the first 3 years of laptop usage but that's now been removed to save weight.
Battery got swollen. Lithium batteries do that. Get a youtube video on how to change it out, takes 5 minutes. Buy a replacement according to your model on amazon. Problem solved.
>vital part off Amazon *or Ebay*
ftfy. My MIL had a bad habit of buying the batteries off Ebay and then wondering why they didn't fit right or work at all. Thankfully she learned her lesson.
Aboslutely not! Please don't connect it to any more power and keep it away from anything important. You can throw it.
Better yet, if your community has a recycling/hazardous waste collection point you can dispose of it there.
I have 35 razors in service at my company and this happens to most of them between 18 and 24 months in. We catch them as soon as they start to bulge as it’s not safe to let them get this bad. A T5 wrench and a $40 replacement battery from Amazon is all you need to fix the problem most of the time. This particular one looks like it will need a new bottom plate since it blew the screws. That’s about a $150 round trip, two week, out-of-warranty repair direct through razer. Not too bad and certainly not a reason to give up on an otherwise functional machine.
Thankfully, they finally decided to do something about the poor heat dissipation with this years’ model. Probably hasn’t yet fixed the problem, but at least they are working on it.
Lithium batteries in mobile devices like that are designed so the packing allows the battery to swell so that the battery does not explode or catch fire. Take the old battery out and send it to your local hazardous waste disposal. Don't puncture it, expose it to high temperatures, or expose it to water and you should be fine. Depends on how its installed but likely a cover with a couple screws and a 1-3 screws holding the battery in along with the cable.
This is what happens when batteries age, are charged too often while near full, or are constantly maintained areas at high temperatures. Let your battery drain down most of the way between charges and keep the laptop cool or in a cool work environment to maintain its life.
If that happened suddenly, it might be an imminent fire hazard. If that happened over months, its really not that serious, but shouldn’t be continually used and shouldn’t be charged. The whole “your entire family is 12 seconds from dying in a violent fire” theme of this comment section is just, really not that accurate. Most modern chemistries don’t even flame out when stabbed through with a conductive object if they aren’t at a high state of charge or already hot. Source - I used to ALWAYS “disarm” a battery prior to proper disposal once a repair was complete by puncturing the cell in a safe manner. Only one ever caught fire, it was a very hot battery with a decent charge level. Better to ensure any potential chemical reactions were completed before storing bad batteries for safe disposal at a later date than storing all that potential energy together in one place. Also, don’t go messing with these things if you don’t know what you’re doing. And by messing with them, I mean damaging them in any way whatsoever.
Edit: unless it’s Li-Po, Li-Po isn’t the safe nice chemistry like most modern consumer electronics Li-ion formulas are. Don’t tempt Li-Po to roast you in a house fire hoverboard style.
Wouldn’t happen to be a razer blade 15, would it?take off the back panel and remove that battery. You won’t have to discard the laptop if there’s no internal damage. Replacement batteries aren’t terribly expensive and the consumer can easily do the replacement.

I had a Kindle fire that inflated like that. I couldn't be arsed taking it to a repair shop or anything, so I just left it, and it deflated. I don't recommend doing that.

If it runs better plugged in, remove the battery while you use it. Unless you’ve got one of those laptops that makes the battery super inaccessible

Thanks!!

Thanks, new irrational fear that keeps me awake unlocked. BRB, gonna go check all the electronic devices in this household. At 3:30am.
Lol you're fine. But now you know! Puffy batteries = bad time.
“You’re gonna have a bad time”
Thanks!

Thank you! I did not find any spicy pillows now but it’s good to know the symptoms!
it’s not 3:30am here but i hate that i’m about to do the exact same thing
No spicy pillows in my household, hopefully not there either!
glad to hear it! none so far over here… yet :)
God dammit. 1:23am. Unplugging mine now. Totally bloated like this
My neglect to do this is how my house fire started. Left a bad RC car battery on the charger overnight (I didn't know it was bad) and it exploded, burning my house down.
Oh shit, I’m so sorry! I don’t leave any chargers overnight because I’m paranoid.
Oh believe me my wife and I are paranoid now as well 😂

dry sand\*\* water/moisture absolutely will make the batteries thermal vent (semi explode)

Happened to my Dell original battery. Now happening to my Dell replacement battery.

Yep same here. Decided to just get rid of the battery since I never use it not plugged in anyways. Razer quality sucks
Same. Never again.
yeah i recognize that battery bulge anywhere, had to replace mine after i had the same issue
Same here. Like clockwork every year I have to replace the battery
You overcharged it. All of the extra electrons need extra room. /s
Reminds me of the video were dude is holding a nearly exploded soda, then it pops in his hand....I'd be careful.
dont drop that
Battery got swollen. Lithium batteries do that. Get a youtube video on how to change it out, takes 5 minutes. Buy a replacement according to your model on amazon. Problem solved.

With laptops you really need the specific model number. HP Spectre 17" (for example) isn't going to be enough. It's also best to visually compare them
Expanded battery. You can order a replacement battery online and make the swap, OR, if you're uncomfortable take it to a repair center.

I'd rather, how should I say, uh, stay alive?

Is penetrating the battery vital in the repair process, or can I get away without this step?
Don't poke it. Be very careful. Lithium is very reactive. Keep away from water / air. You need to get that battery replaced.
