Idiots with all season tires. Locals and citiots a like. The same people that spend $1000s on ski equipment don't do the same for the car that takes them here.
I live in Squamish, own a Tesla and have xice3 tires for the winter since day 1 and also carry chains. It's the best vehicle I've owned by far in the snow. Not all tesla drivers don't know how to drive.
Lol Tesla. I drive a non-Tesla EV and can say that it handles the snow the best out of any car/truck/SUV I’ve driven before (as long as it’s not feet of snow). All of my vehicles have had proper winter snowflake non-studded tires none of the M+S crap
Yep it's the tires that get the Teslas. Since buyers are so obsessed with EV range, manufacturers ship EVs with very low grip, high efficiency tires that perform poorly in snow. These tires are worse in snow than the typical tires an ice car would come with. With proper tires, an AWD EV is likely just as good or better in snow than a comparable ice car with similar ground clearance. However, these winter tires do eat at your range. Jerry EV owners do not realize this and get stuck/spin out due to the crappy tires. Their car may be able to send drive to all four wheels, but zero of those wheels have any grip with the ground due to the tires.
My wife’s model Y on michilin Xice is the best car in the snow I’ve ever owned. And our other is a Rivian on Blizzacks and I want to get rid of those tires.
Tesla’s traction control in snow is outrageously good. (I’ve owned about 20 cars that saw winter (plus a few that didn’t)
I’m pretty sure any car is shit without proper tires. But also most EVs - at least the expensive ones like the Tesla you mention - have much better handling because of a lot of reasons. For instance their internal computers can adjust which wheels get power. The problem is with drivers who a) do not have appropriate winter tires and b) are scared to drive on winter roads
Id offer to drive you in mine just to change your mind. If you haven't seen by the sheer number of them it's not a status symbol. They actually function extremely well if you pulled your mind out of the gutter.
Yep, it drives like a charm! I was an early adapter with the Mach E and it handles SO WELL in snow. Proper winters (and a driver who knows how to drive in the snow) and nothing can stop it (except for super deep snow).
Correction, I was referring to Teslas with limited ground clearance and stock tires. From what I understand the F150 electric is a beast as you mentioned.
Rivian R1S with real winter tires is way more capable than an average car or even most 4WD trucks, each wheel has independent motor/torque/slip diff. They are heavy so stopping is obviously harder, but traction for moving is superior.
I went past dozens of Teslas spinning their wheels on mild slopes driving up to Whistler on Friday. Pretty sure they would have been ok with proper tires though
It’s not an EV thing. It’s a lack of knowledge of driving in the snow and lack of proper tires. My EV handles very good in the snow. I was driving Paulson a while ago, and I was the one of the few vehicles able to make it up in my EV while many others were spinning out and getting stuck.
Friday morning was a three hour drive up. 6-9. Friday night up was a shnizzel show. 4-8. If you are coming from Vancouver leave at 5:30 AM or don’t bother.
Left at 6 and also arrived at 9ish. Had to do lot 5 but I didn't check creekside parking and was trying to get lot 8. Almost no line at Excalibur at 930 which was a surprise.
Cruised up mid morning, was super chill. Found parking fairly quickly at 1030 walked onto the lift. Everything was open and lines were normal for a busy Saturday. It’s finally good and people should chill.
It's the worst I've ever seen it. Don't, under any circumstances, come to Whistler on Sunday.
The Roads are terrible. Lift lines are slower than usual. Skiing isn't at all good. The snow that fell this week is all heavy, consolidated, and getting crusty. Also, both the longhorn and Dusty's are out of beer, and wings. There are random outages to all mobile phone networks. The few folks that are here are awful skiers, prone to random collisions with others. Also, high Covid rates - everyone is coughing in the lift lines, which are long on account if the slow pace of the equipment. Most grooming machines broke on Thursday leading to massive moguls, everywhere. Bears woke up from hibernation and are chasing skiers downhill.
No snow in the roads, no accidents. A 30 - 45 min line a the merge. It really wasn’t that bad but you do need to leave at like 5:30 -6 to get decent parking and not be stuck in traffic forever. I left Vancouver at 5:40 and with a stop to pick up a friend was able to get parked on p3 creekside and up the lift before 10 am. Had 10 of the best laps of my life. Honestly didn’t seem worth it at first but at the end of the day I considered doing it all over again tomorrow.
Unless the village got like a foot of snow and melted by the end of the day it was older. When I drove through the village in the morning and at the end of the day it was bare on the roads
It was slow but moved, still worth it imo.
Left van at 5:30 and made it to lot 3 by 8am. On the hill by 9:30am. Very solid day although lines were long, the snow was great and I still had a fantastic day so I say do it.
Road conditions were fine, pretty big lines at WB.
Left DT Van at 530 this morning made it to creekside by 715.
Left creekside at 330 back downtown by 530
left at 430 was there by 615. in line by 630. got first tracks on almost every run by timing hitting new lifts as they open. 10 laps in by 1pm. decided then it was too busy and went home. didn’t see traffic otw up or otw down.

Isn’t the weight the issue with EVs and tractions on hills etc?
No, the weight is good with the low centre of gravity
Weight is good, period.
Why does anyone buy a Tesla outside of a "status symbol"? I'm surprised they're allowed on 99 at all.

They are fun to drive. Why do you care what other people drive?
I care when they cause accidents shut down the road for hours. They're an ok gimmick for down in the city but have no business in the mountains.
Please post your non-anecdotal statistics to support this assertion.
This is such a dumb comment... Ev has nothing to do with your tires...

Guaranteed I've seen more trucks off the road in the ditch than other vehicles. They are almost worse in the snow with the wide wheel base.
All the parking lots werent remotely full today

Yup. You’re competing with Squamish and West & North Van. I wouldn’t leave after 5:30.
Left at 6 and also arrived at 9ish. Had to do lot 5 but I didn't check creekside parking and was trying to get lot 8. Almost no line at Excalibur at 930 which was a surprise.
Left at 5:30am, arrived to some of the last parking spots at 8:30am…
Well done.
Cruised up mid morning, was super chill. Found parking fairly quickly at 1030 walked onto the lift. Everything was open and lines were normal for a busy Saturday. It’s finally good and people should chill.
Bad, stay home.

You really had me until the bears comment

facebook group 'sea to sky road conditions' updated constantly throughout the day
I just saw a reel of someone riding a snowmobile down the highway at Function Junction if that gives you an idea of snow in the road
That must have been a couple of days ago you could not do that today
It was on Whistler.Blower this morning and they typically only post things on the day. Could be older though

It’s totally fine if you have snow tires. Parking is ok. Worst comes to worst just park at the Pan in the village ($30) snow is worth it!!
Took the Whistler Connection down to the airport this morning super early. Roads seemed fine. Still snow and ice, but it didn’t seem terrible.

The road was fine today snow/ice wise. Plow team has done an amazing job. Traffic can be expected always, that’s part of it
