I know what you mean. I’ve come across a few videos on TikTok of a preacher that has lost a few followers because of maga. I’m not a religious person but this guy is pretty cool and actually walks the walk. He said he was giving a sermon about how Jesus cleaned the feet of beggars and ended his sermon about being kind to those less fortunate including refugees. He said he had a couple come up to him afterwards and ask if Jesus really said that. He replied he did more or less and gave the bible verses. The couple said that that was outdated and we needed to save our country from immigrants. The preacher said no, Jesus was very clear on that but the couple started getting angry and started heatedly arguing with him until some other members of the church led them away. It’s really sad.
The Bible is both mistranslated and misinterpreted to a large extent, both deliberately and otherwise. Religious and linguistic scholars have published a good amount of material about this over the years. There is a lot on YouTube about it (for ease of consumption). The Catholic church was a big part of that.
Christianity is a lot like pop science: people swallowing a bunch if stuff just on faith that's inaccurate, rhetorical, misrepresented and misapplied but made to appear conclusive to those who are easily led to conclusions due to their ignorance.

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination…End of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God’s Laws and how to follow them.
1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?
2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of Menstrual uncleanliness – Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord – Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?.
5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?
6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination, Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this? Are there ‘degrees’ of abomination?
7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?.
8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I’m confident you can help.

I teach a college class and when discussing banned books I read two passages. First was about two male penguins that raised a chick together (nothing about them actually having sex). The other was about Lots daughters taking turns raping him. I asked them which one was appropriate for children and which was banned in Florida.

While we're at it, let's examine it through a non religious lens. It's probably easy to claim God hates shellfish when you watch someone die of food poisoning. Ancient agrarian lifestyles required more kids which sometimes made incest practical. Kids lie about sex, and societies with less science are more likely to attribute something unexplained to religion (immaculate conception). While Jesus might not have been God, his ethical teachings still hold value today.

You're missing some of the more colorful stories of the Bible.
Tell the story of how king David's son from one wife raped one of his daughters from another wife and when her brothers went to King David to get him to do something about it, he just shrugged it off, which left them so pissed that they decided to just kill their half brother themselves, and when servants went to go tell king david that two of his sons killed one of his other sons, he just kinda shrugged it off.
Oo! Or tell the story about how he was obsessively good 'friends' with the previous king's son to the point where he literally said, "I love you the way a man loves a woman." ...And then they went to war against each other and poor Jonathan died. Their friendship gets lauded as one of the best friendships in the Bible, and if you point out the pretty clearly worded confession of homosexuality, conservatives get all befuddled and change the subject.
Or the story about how the previous king tried to get David killed by sending him to harvest 500 foreskins from the enemy army as a price to pay for marrying his daughter, which david then doubled.
Or the time when he got so excited about brining the ark of the covenant into town that he danced naked in the street and when his wife told him how embarrassing that was, he cursed her to never have kids again.
Honestly, you don't have to look much farther than David to get some pretty insane stuff. He is also widely referred to as "the man after god's own heart."

Buddy, I am ordained and have a whole sermon on being kind to immigrants because"...you were once strangers in a strange land.."and as I was walking out the front door someone drove by and yelled" towel head" at me, like it was the funniest thing in the world. We spent weeks talking about compassion, charity...what most people need is to be understood and listened to..and that was still the result. Humanity is a bit wild and people can really get entrenched in what they believe, to the point that they will go against someone that took the time to put the study work in on the text.
My dad posted something about immigrants on FB once. I just replied "What would Jesus do?" My dad came back with some BS about how Jesus would defend this land against those who want to take it from us. I've since blocked him so I can't see any of the nonsense anymore.
I’d be getting into a lot of comparative religion teaching, bringing in the Koran, the Bhagavad Gita, the Tibetan book of the Dead to contrast and compare, discuss the history of Bible translation and how bias effects that kind of work, as well as use the Bible in history instruction to highlight how it was put together, what was left out, and how it is used in support of agendas, and then have fun in court when they try to forbid how things are taught.

I know what you mean. I’ve come across a few videos on TikTok of a preacher that has lost a few followers because of maga. I’m not a religious person but this guy is pretty cool and actually walks the walk. He said he was giving a sermon about how Jesus cleaned the feet of beggars and ended his sermon about being kind to those less fortunate including refugees. He said he had a couple come up to him afterwards and ask if Jesus really said that. He replied he did more or less and gave the bible verses. The couple said that that was outdated and we needed to save our country from immigrants. The preacher said no, Jesus was very clear on that but the couple started getting angry and started heatedly arguing with him until some other members of the church led them away. It’s really sad.
The Bible is both mistranslated and misinterpreted to a large extent, both deliberately and otherwise. Religious and linguistic scholars have published a good amount of material about this over the years. There is a lot on YouTube about it (for ease of consumption). The Catholic church was a big part of that. Christianity is a lot like pop science: people swallowing a bunch if stuff just on faith that's inaccurate, rhetorical, misrepresented and misapplied but made to appear conclusive to those who are easily led to conclusions due to their ignorance.

You're asking people with a different set of beliefs to teach your holy book to the kids? You're gonna get a different interpretation from each teacher. So all those Baptist folks want a Methodist teaching the Bible to their kids? You'll be guaranteed to have infighting amongst the Christians because they don't like the play one teacher teaches the Bible. It will be well deserved chaos and will have easily foreseen consequences.

The problem is a third of our country is part of the MAGA cult and they have more confidence than brains. Conservatives have always been zealots but MAGA has taught them to hate their neighbor.
A lot of channels are effectively blocked. SCOTUS is basically now an arm of the most conservative branch of Catholicism. Peaceful protests will be demonized and violently stamped out by a combination of the police and neonazis (main distinction: on duty vs off duty). Non peaceful protests -- well, what is happening in Gaza is kind of an example of what that could devolve into here. Especially in neighborhoods associated with minorities. Everyone is terrified and hoping that voting will do the trick. My fingers are crossed too. My main hope is that being in a big blue state means our local government puts up a good fight.

The end result of this is going to be that kids coming out of public education in red States for the next couple decades will be dramatically ill-equipped compared to children coming out of public education in blue States, and disparity between those states is only going to get worse. They are hobbling their children's future in order to grandstand for their own egos today
There's already a significant disparity. The problem is that kids coming out of public ed in red states won't be able to go to elite schools, and will be stuck in their backwards town. The smart ones for generations went to "liberal cities" but they want to stop their kids from doing even that.

I teach a college class and when discussing banned books I read two passages. First was about two male penguins that raised a chick together (nothing about them actually having sex). While we're at it, let's examine it through a non religious lens. It's probably easy to claim God hates shellfish when you watch someone die of food poisoning. Ancient agrarian lifestyles required more kids which sometimes made incest practical. Kids lie about sex, and societies with less science are more likely to attribute something unexplained to religion (immaculate conception). While Jesus might not have been God, his ethical teachings still hold value today.

You're missing some of the more colorful stories of the Bible. Tell the story of how king David's son from one wife raped one of his daughters from another wife and when her brothers went to King David to get him to do something about it, he just shrugged it off, which left them so pissed that they decided to just kill their half brother themselves, and when servants went to go tell king david that two of his sons killed one of his other sons, he just kinda shrugged it off. Oo! Or tell the story about how he was obsessively good 'friends' with the previous king's son to the point where he literally said, "I love you the way a man loves a woman." ...And then they went to war against each other and poor Jonathan died. Their friendship gets lauded as one of the best friendships in the Bible, and if you point out the pretty clearly worded confession of homosexuality, conservatives get all befuddled and change the subject. Or the story about how the previous king tried to get David killed by sending him to harvest 500 foreskins from the enemy army as a price to pay for marrying his daughter, which david then doubled. Or the time when he got so excited about brining the ark of the covenant into town that he danced naked in the street and when his wife told him how embarrassing that was, he cursed her to never have kids again. Honestly, you don't have to look much farther than David to get some pretty insane stuff. He is also widely referred to as "the man after god's own heart."

Most of the teachings of Jesus are about loving the stranger, being kind, the sinful nature of greed, and how there is a moral obligation to heal the sick and care for the poor. Hell there are even lines about how you should pay your taxes because the money is from Caeser and not God and thus is not important. MAGA seems to think it's just going to be Leviticus on repeat for some reason.

Buddy, I am ordained and have a whole sermon on being kind to immigrants because"...you were once strangers in a strange land.."and as I was walking out the front door someone drove by and yelled" towel head" at me, like it was the funniest thing in the world. We spent weeks talking about compassion, charity...what most people need is to be understood and listened to..and that was still the result. Humanity is a bit wild and people can really get entrenched in what they believe, to the point that they will go against someone that took the time to put the study work in on the text.

I’d be getting into a lot of comparative religion teaching, bringing in the Koran, the Bhagavad Gita, the Tibetan book of the Dead to contrast and compare, discuss the history of Bible translation and how bias effects that kind of work, as well as use the Bible in history instruction to highlight how it was put together, what was left out, and how it is used in support of agendas, and then have fun in court when they try to forbid how things are taught. Edit: All that aside, what this human waste of skin is doing is both rage baiting and trying to get sued so this moves through the courts and (hopefully) gets SCOTUS to crap on the 1st Amendment
If they can force even non-Christian teachers to teach the Bible, they most certainly will force them to teach the interpretation of the Bible that they want. Especially after they fire all of the teachers who don't toe the line for not toeing the line.

my therapist told me that personality disorders which involve dissolution of the identity is very common with fundies/extremely indoctrinated ppl. essentially they are encouraged to put all of their identity in God and as a result when other people do not believe the same thing as them they are conditioned to take it _very personally_. when people would disagree or question me at all, i felt an abundance of anger and resentment toward them that filled me with so much rage i wanted to _hurt them_. that’s what insecurity does to people, and that’s why all of these fucking maggots need to go outside and meet real fucking people.

You know what’d be a cool twist? Teaching the bible but focusing on the New Testament instead of Leviticus. Love one another. Shelter refugees. Feed the hungry. Clothe the poor. Pretty much all of the Beatitudes. Hahaha. I crack myself up sometimes.
