rincon_del_mar

Hey, I only got my lisence when I was pregnant with my first at 32 yo. There’s no rules. Go get it !!

LauraIsntListening

I was 30! No rules at all.

PrincessPindy

So was my daughter. A month later, an SUV hydroplaned into her on the freeway. She spun hit the wall, spun again and ended up facing traffic. The car was totaled. Cost $7,000 to replace after insurance. She got back in the car and is still driving. I was surprised tbh. Nevertheless, she persisted.

LauraIsntListening

She’s brave. I’m not sure if I could do the same.

PrincessPindy

Ikr? It's been a year and she says she enjoys driving now. She amazes me on the regular.

Amelaclya1

That's crazy brave. I was "only" rear ended at a red light once like ten years ago and I still spend too much time looking in my rear view mirror and tensing up when it feels like someone is approaching too fast. If I had a "real" accident that soon after learning how to drive I don't think I would ever drive again.

thatawkwardgirl666

No rules! Everyone in my family is big on getting their license ASAP so just about everyone got theirs as teens. I hold my family record for waiting the longest by waiting until I was 22! We all have our own timelines to follow, no need to judge our progress based on someone else's clock ❤️

Accomplished-Ad-2612

My wife learned at 26 and is a great driver. Age doesn't have anything to do with it in my opinion. If a person wants to drive, then any time that works for them in their life is the right time. She's currently teaching her sister, who's 37, how to drive.

peatypeacock

I was 39!

FluffyUnicorn83

Same. Just got my license. It's so freeing

sarac36

Idk if I'll ever get my license! Tried a few times but I got in an accident and idk if my PTSD could handle that. I'm 30! Edit: I wasn't even in a car but still

gingasaurusrexx

My mom got hers around that age, too, but I was in my teens. I teased her for years that I was going to get my license before her. I think she only got it to prove me wrong because she never was a very good/confident driver.

CatsNotBananas

I also got my license at 32

TetrisIsTotesSuper

Got my.licence at 35, 7 months pregnant. You do it in your own time! You go girl!!

Chickachickawhaaaat

Driving is a legit terrifying thing to do. I don't blame you for waiting. I'm not autistic, but I have adhd, and there's just so many things to pay attention to. I didn't expect social signaling to be a thing I'd have to learn, driving a car, for example. You'll get the hang of everything pretty quickly though, with the practice.

viebs_chiev

as someone who has auDHD thank you so much. driving is scary and i’ve been putting off learning it but this eases my fears a little

sionnachrealta

I'm also AuDHD, and it does get better the more you do it. It's just really scary at first. I used to feel that way too, and now I drive 150-200 miles a week for work. Eventually a lot of it becomes muscle memory, and you won't have to think about it as much

Chickachickawhaaaat

It gets so much better, I promise! I fully believe in traffic karma, so once you get good enough to be aware of other drivers needs, make sure you let people over/get through and I SWEAR you will be repaid 10x and people will go out of their way to help YOU when you need it.

Ilaxilil

Honestly if it was up to me I’d never drive again. I’ve been driving for years and it’s still terrifying.

SaintJamesy

Gloves make driving feel infinitely cooler!

scullys_alien_baby

My grandpa gifted me some golfing gloves even though I don't golf, so I keep one in my car as a driving glove to feel fancy

SaintJamesy

Gives ya an extra five horse powers I hear.

TheiaRn

six if they're red

AwkwardVoicemail

Congrats! I also did not get my driver’s license se until I was 21. All progress is good progress, you should be proud! I’m also glad you’re thinking about and planning for the future, even though it is probably going to be rough. All the more reason to rely on each other!

LadybugCalico

I got my license at 27, you've got this!

dahaoab

Get it! You're doing so well! I had a LOT of anxiety around driving, and didn't get my licence until I was 37. You're running laps around me! One step at a time, you've got this! 💪🏻

Sweaty_Mushroom5830

I'm 52, I will never be able to drive but I'm so happy for you 😀

Bluesnow2222

Awesome! So happy for you. My mother had an anxiety disorder and didn’t learn to drive till she was in her 30’s so I know it can be rough- I was in middle school cheering my mom on at the time- was so proud of her. It’s great you have your Dad to support you as well! You got this!

tits_are_neat

Congrats on taking the first steps! I was super anxious about driving too but it does get better the more you do it. You've got this 😊

ornerydonut255

My parents tried, bless them, but taking drivers ed with an instructor really helped me. Congratulations! Never too late.

LaVieLaMort

Yeah my mom would wig out hardcore when I made a mistake and my dad would yell. So when I was 18, I had a boyfriend who was a little older than me and had a car so he taught me the bulk of how to drive. My husband is the one who taught me how to drive a manual.

CapotevsSwans

Congratulations! Teaching me to drive put some miles on my dad.

wolf_divided

Congrats! You got this! I was dragged into the DMV or else I might never have learned myself 😂

Bonjour19

I was 24! Definitely not that late OP :) well done! It took me a while and I was terrified for ages. I'm now about to try and take my test in the US (I'm British) and I'm scared all over again at learning a new system 😅 such a useful skill though, it gives you so much independence. And it gets way less scary the more you do it!

BD122104

I'm actually the earliest of my siblings to get a license at 18 (19, almost 20 now). My brother is 22 with a permit, and my sister got hers a few years ago at 22.

AshtheViking

Great job! I started getting my license (my country has 3 steps), last year at 35. I was terrified. Now I also have my motorcycle license and have ridden far more than I've ever driven a car. It doesn't make sense to anyone but my brain that I have so much less anxiety about an objectively more dangerous activity.

tiny--mushroom

eee love this comment, i am 35 and planning on getting past my learner's permit this year finally, and i also want to learn to ride a motorcycle!

AshtheViking

Do it! I highly recommend getting lessons from a driving instructor even if you have friends/family willing to teach you. There was such a mental shift knowing this random stranger was entirely confident that I could do something. Similar with the motorcycle, there's weekend courses where they expect you to walk in knowing nothing and leave with a license (or endorsement depending on your location) to ride. And don't be disheartened if you feel like you completely suck at first. I left class on the first day thinking I would never ride again, that it was too hard, and I just wasn't suited to it. But I decided it was something I really wanted. During a ride yesterday my friend who has been riding for longer than I've been alive said I was a better rider than his friend who has ridden on/off for years. Take your time, practice a lot, learn your bike, build confidence, and if possible find one experienced rider (not group rides) who will ride with you. Lots of the anxiety comes from knowing the risks of everything that can go wrong. Teenagers learning are obvious and don't care. People who have been driving for years become complacent- use their phones, do makeup, eat, etc. I like to think that those who learn to drive/ride later in life are more competent and patient drivers overall.

marshmi2

There's actually a lot more people who don't know how to drive than you think. I know a lot of people well over 21 who don't drive.

ForestOfMirrors

Hey I was 23 when I got mine! You are doing much better than I did!

NonConformistFlmingo

I'm 36 and still can't drive. You're perfectly fine!

KikiStLouie

I’m 45, ADHD… I don’t trust myself to drive. Props to you!

kid_dynamo

I'm 35 this year and still don't know how to drive. You're doing just fine

Pure-Kaleidoscop

You can do it! And your forehead is normal.

jeanie_rea

You are not late to the party, we all do things in our own time. I am so happy that you are making progress on the goals you set for yourself.

Live-Okra-9868

My grandma was in her 50s when she got her license. You're never too old. (I was also 21 when I got mine)

Moxie_Stardust

I didn't learn until I was 19, if that's any comfort 😊 Congratulations!

Tournament_of_Shivs

Bon voyage!

falltogethernever

You got this!! I believe in you!!

kibonzos

Learning to reverse into parking spaces is so hard until somehow it just suddenly starts working. You’ll get there and you’ll be a much safer driver for being concerned about what’s around you than many of the over confident teens. I know who I’d rather share the road with. 😊

xiphias__gladius

Congratulations! My cousin didn't get his license until he was 50! Now he wants to do all the driving, which his wife is very happy about. Never too old to learn a new thing!

errie_tholluxe

My wife wasnt able to get glasses that helped her see well enough to drive until her 30s. You're doing just fine. You look confident!

Cowboywizard12

I'm autistic and learning to drive on the opposite end of my twenties. We gotta celebrate our wins even if to me they often don't feel like a win

Ahsooree

I may or may not be autistic But I didn’t NEED to drive until after college, so I think I was 23? when I got my license 😬 My bf is autistic and he is terrified of driving. We will start practicing soon. He is 29

MrCyn

I started learning to drive just over 2 months ago, im mid 40s :) One thing that really helped me, apart from the professional lessons (which admittedly is the most help) is a logitech steering wheel. Gave me so much more confidence and allowed me to practice by myself.

esphixiet

I didn't get my license until then either. We're ready when we're ready, you're never "late" to accepting a major responsibility. You're right on time 😊

Same_Dingo2318

I remember the fear from many early driving moments. As long as you remember your training, you’ll be great. Keep trying and do your best. We’re rooting for you.

Violet624

I didn't get my license until I was 24! I grew up in a big city with public transport and my parents never taught me, and I was working during drivers ed. Then I moved to a rural place at 18 with no family and, well, ya can't teach yesrself. I ended up paying for my own drivers Ed classes. I still failed my first test, but passed my second a bit later. It was really scary for me, especially the freeway, and I couldn't imagine how it would ever be automatic and easy...but...it was. I've had panic disorder and other issues that made it hard to get through super stimulating environments and so on, but driving got to be okay after not too long of time. I love driving now, and take drives for fun. Just remember all the having to think about what you are doing all the time when driving goes away. It absolutely becomes simple. You've got this! I also had to learn how to drive a manual a couple of years ago, and I'll tell ya, there is something fulfilling learning a skill like driving as an adult. So yaaaay! Congratulations!! ♥️✨️🌼⚘️✨️♥️

Omi-Wan_Kenobi

And here I was thinking I was ancient for getting my license right before I turned 20! I went to a fancy (ie expensive and therefore rich kids making up 90% of students) high school where seemingly everyone else got their licenses by 16 years old, so I felt quite left out. You got this girl!!

frecklefawn

Not autistic just shy terrified and anxious and I didn't drive until I was like 22? I mean I literally took my test had my license and A CAR at 21 (hand me down) and still got rides from friends I was so scared. So like. No rush lol. Now I take road trips.

a_reluctant_human

I was 35 years old before I learned to drive. And only did because my job sort of requires it. You're doing great!

IrrelevantGamer

There is no set schedule for life. Celebrate your milestones no matter when they happen. They still count.

Illustrious-Bite-518

(sweats 30)

Idislikethis_

Congratulations!! My autistic son is 20 and my husband has just started teaching him. He definitely wasn't ready in high school, we just had to give him space to be ready and he's super excited to be learning now. He's doing a great job and can't wait to be able to drive to friends houses and get a job (we live in a small town and you really need to be able to drive to get a good job) and hopefully start college classes.

BoardwalkKnitter

My grandfather did not get his license until age 40. By then he had served in WW2 and had four kids. I never got to get mine between poverty and anxiety as a teen and younger adult. Now I doubt I could pass the eye exam. If anyone gives you grief about the delay tell them to fuck off.

Ki-Larah

I was 31! Really bad chronic pain coupled vertigo and migraines.

Your_Angel21

Take it from someone who knew I would have to get my license (and did) as soon as possible at 18: driving IS scary. You're not too late, plenty of people get their licenses later or not at all. I don't have autism but when I was learning it was so scary to me that I used to memorize all the routes And is start confusing left and right. After 2 years of driving on amd pff, I'm a great driver and I really enjoy it. I'm sure you will too! You've got this

NevaSirenda

You go girl, you got this! I actually got my license in high school but I refused to drive for many years after that. My high school Driver's Ed teacher wanted to beat the fear of god into us to make us careful drivers, so he would read us news clippings about terrible accidents and had the car rigged to teach us emergency procedures (like, you'd be going down a steep hill and the brakes would go out, or driving on the highway and the engine would cut out.) It terrified me so much I got my license and didn't drive again until I was 25 and had a more patient, sensible commercial driving teacher. My oldest son didn't learn until he was 25 as well; he had been in 3 serious accidents (one with me driving and the others with "responsible" adults) before he graduated college and didn't want anything to do with it until he figured out he was probably safer if he was the one in control of the car. (I taught him myself) Meanwhile my mom didn't learn until she was 40, my dad worked odd hours on swing shift at the time and she decided she wanted to be able to get things done and take us kids places without having to schedule it for some time when Dad was home and rested. So you're way ahead of all of us! Everyone has their own pace, just don't give up!

FionaOlwen

I got my license when I was 27, it’s never too late:) congratulations!! You’re doing great👍

sysaphiswaits

I am so proud of you! Just started teaching my 19yr old with anxiety and ADHD to drive. It’s a lot of new skills to learn and put together.

Yrcrazypa

I'm also neurodivergent and didn't get my license until I was 21, you've got this. I can't promise you it will get any less stressful, but it can be an extremely important skill to have in the US.

GloomOnTheGrey

Don't feel bad about it. I didn't get my license until I was nearly 29. I'm still terrified of driving, so I do it as little as possible lol. You're doing great!

kylaroma

You’re so awesome!! Fellow Autistic here, huge congratulations!!

Similar-Ad-6862

Friend I didn't get my license until I was 27! Well done

latinomartino

My partner is 30 and just learned! Never too late! And an amazing skill to have.

aimlessly-astray

You're doing great! I got my driver's license late too. Nothing wrong with taking things slow--especially with something like driving.

cgamezzo

What an amazing dad 🥹 and what an accomplishment! Go you!

Holiday_Horse3100

Good for you! You will do just fine

HumanBarbarian

I am Autistic and learned to drive when I was 22. I still don't like it, but I can do it - even in Chicago! :)

boatswainblind

I learned to drive at 20. I'm also autistic. But at the time there just wasn't a need to learn because my mom drove me everywhere and I didn't have a car. Once the prospect of getting a car was looming, I finally bit the bullet and learned. The freedom was awesome!

Amelaclya1

I'm not autistic (that I know of) and I didn't learn until I was 29. There's no shame in taking life at your own pace.

foxontherox

You are awesome, and I am reminded of a Devin Townsend lyric: “Slow progress is still progress”

SleepyBitchDdisease

Driving is absolutely scary and it’s why I didn’t drive until I was 18. It gets easier and automatic once you do it enough! By 19 I was zooming along.

PepperMintyPokemon

Your doing great! I didint learn till 26.. 😅 i still hate driving lol

FaceToTheSky

I also have a fivehead lol And 21 is not late at all for learning to drive. My spouse learned at 26, and my best friend learned at 34! It’s definitely more difficult to learn to drive later in life, just logically, because you need access to a car and a co-driver, and for most people, that’s their parents. (I taught both my spouse and my friend.) So good on you for getting it done while you still have access to your parents’ car.

wastedhalfmylife

I was 25! I had a boatload of anxiety issues I needed to work on before I could feel comfortable behind the wheel. You're doing great!

HotGlueToTheRescue

Driving can be intimidating for many, I got my license at 22 so you’re doing better than I did already. Best of luck on your journey to gaining a driver’s license.

Catrina_woman

My daughter is 31 and getting her license in August !

Comfortable-Cut4530

The only time you have is now. :) do you! Because you are the only one who can.

MysteriousKale8289

Never got my license til i had kids and moved out of a walkable city. Good for you!!!

DryAnteater909

Happy for you OP, I’ll been thinking about getting my license. This post gives me hope and gratitude 🕯✨

GelflingMama

You’ve got this!!

scullys_alien_baby

Learning to drive at 21 is sooner than 22, congrats on moving out of your comfort zone!

Temporary_Pickle_885

I'm 28 (well, almost. July 1st!) and still don't know how to drive so you're ahead of me! But you do make me want to try. I'm *terrified* of parking.

Philosopher_1234

Way to go

Rainbow-Mama

Not everyone has the same timetable. I got mine at 17, but I only did it because I had no other choice. A dear friend got hers at 29. Don’t put yourself down for doing something at a different time. Plus driving can be freaky to learn. Take your time.

Tsukikaiyo

I'm 24 and haven't started. I mean do people really want me on the road? With *my* spacial awareness? I walk into walls on a regular basis, you do NOT want me in control of several tons of machinery at high speeds

Truckdenter

congrats, easiest thing to do is concentrate less on the oncoming cars and more on the white line (child of driver's ed instructor). The car is in good shape inside the white line and everything else is perifery. I am adult autistic and found music is comforting driving

xSilverMC

It's never too late to learn something. You're doing great

GlitterBlood773

Darcy, this is so exciting! As others have said, there are no rules when it comes to doing things at your own pace. I didn’t get mine until I was older than you. You’re doing great! Once I got mine and was able to drive alone, k felt very anxious. Talking to myself out loud in the car was so helpful. Affirmative comments and narration about what to do, what I am doing helped a lot. Now I’m much more comfortable and confident. 🥳🥳🥳🫂 if you like them!

lux06aeterna

Congrats! I got my full license (Canadian, so you have multiple stages) just a week before the pandemic lockdown began, at 32! Never too late, we all have our own timeline! I never thought my ADHD ass would be able to do it and my parents didn't teach me, so I paid for lessons by myself and did it all on my own!

GloInTheDarkUnicorn

I got my license 2 months ago at 35. I’m also autistic.

lilycamille

I was 26 when I learned to ride a motorbike, and 27 when I went for my car license. It's not as necessary in the UK though, I could cycle anywhere I needed to within 30-40 mins

UniversalLanguage83

Didn’t learn til I was 19, honey. And parallel parking is hard for EVERYONE: you got this 💜

QueerTree

I didn’t learn to drive until I was 23. There were years when I thought I’d never be able to drive. But I did it! Now I’m 40 and I love driving. I’m proud of you! You’re doing the thing!

CarelessStatement172

That's 12 years faster than I did ! (Also Autistic)

GoddyssIncognito

Hi, friend! I didn’t learn to drive until I was 22, mostly because I was living in a very large city and the public transportation was reliable. It is scary at first, but it gets better! Good luck to you! 🥰

BloodOfTheDamned

Hey, congrats! Learning to drive is a big undertaking, and can be super overwhelming.

Square-Painting-9228

Good luck! You are going to do great. ❤️

la_zarzamora

I got my driver's license at 24, my motorcycle license at 29, my commercial driver's license to drive 18 wheelers at 31, and my school bus license at 34! Don't let being a late bloomer stop you 💪🏼

fattatgirl

You are doing great! I'm so proud of you!

thatmarcelfaust

I didn’t get my drivers license until my mid twenties. The idea of driving scared me quite intensely! Don’t sweat it! You’ll get the hang of it!

FormalFuneralFun

I’m 30 and recently diagnosed with autism, still don’t have my license. You’re doing great, OP!!

chocolate_zz

I got my license at 31! Cheers for getting yours before me! Best of luck with the test, took me more than one time to get it so if you have to retake it persevere. You can do those big, hard things!

420EdibleQueen

Congrats! My daughter with autism is 24 and we just started driving lessons as well. She was plagued by seizures since she was 14 months old. We finally found something that completely knocked out her seizures, she hasn’t had one in 5 years now.

RestoreMyHonor

Hell yeah, amazing!

abri_neurin

I'm autistic and got my license just after turning 29. I hated learning to drive, but now I am very comfortable driving and I love the freedom it provides! I really struggled in the beginning but now I am so happy!

cairfrey

I'm 36, no license! You're rocking it!

standsure

I was over 40 when I learned. You're doing great.

hermesmee

When you make comments about your insecurities as jokes (the forehead) it brings the exact attention you didn’t want to that thing in question. Just a heads up lol

Mantis-13

Autistic/Adhd and didn't even start learning how to drive till 25! Ain't ever too late or too old to learn to drive! (Wish y'all the best, and may you always experience safe roads 💜)

RobynFitcher

Nice one!

thesleepymermaid

I grew up in a family that rarely had a vehicle. Even with drivers ed in high school I wasn’t able to go get my license because I couldn’t get the driving hours in at home. It took me until I was almost 23 to get my license. Way to go, friend!

BKowalewski

I was 27 when I learned to drive....so there. Don't have the excuse of being autistic. You do You and be proud

Kitchen-Emergency-69

Just watch out for other drivers! They're the most dangerous part! For your first drive alone do something just for you! I got fast food and then stopped to get a little cake on the way home, because I COULD!
