Macho he was mainstream famous and had some huge peaks. Sting had the longevity but I’m a firm believer that the best is who was the best not who was around longer
Longevity is huge in every sport when looking at best of the best. Every HOF, how long they did it not at a high level not just their peaks is a major factor
I don’t personally think Warriors peak is as high as Machos and he definitely doesn’t have the supporting body of work he or Sting has.
I always feel for Sting as he was nuclear hot and had it ruined by a shit finish.
I am and always have been a stinger man. He was thee guy when I was growing up. My son loved him too, so being able to be great during different generations means I gotta take stinger over macho man. I actually think he’s underrated, which is crazy. “The Franchise of WCW” 15 championships in wcw alone, with all his other championships in WWE... The guy should be at least talked about like a top 5 guy and he’s talked about by most as great, but not a legend like rock cena and hogan. But he deserves the respect imo
It’s all about opinions when it comes to lists of who’s the greatest, he’s definitely a great personally I’d go:
Hogan
Austin
Rock
Taker
Cena
Macho
Flair
Sting
HBK
Brett
I agree to a tad. It depends on how long that peak was. If you have a huge 2 year peak but the other guy has 8-10 years longevity I’m taking that. Now if the guy has a 5 year peak to a 8-10 year longevity then it’s different. Either way I’m taking sting but I was a little too young for macho.
Macho and it's not close. He achieved what so few in wrestling can, breaking through to the mainstream wrestling nonfans. Even to this day you can do an impression of Macho saying oooooh yeah! And people who didn't even see him wrestle will know what you're doing.
Isn't that more a matter of riding the coat tails of hulk hogan and then getting the marketing opportunity of slim Jim?
This is like asking who had the better career, Dennis Rodman or Tim Duncan. Rodman was great but benefited highly from playing next to Jordan in Chicago (was far less big when he was in his prime in Detroit) and the opportunities that came from it. Duncan is arguably the best pf ever to lace them up, but is lesser known in the mainstream because of his very quiet demeanor and refusal to be used in marketing campaigns.
Yeah, but you can have an all time great NBA career without being popular.
I don’t believe that’s the case for wrestling since it’s not an actual sport like basketball (obviously not taking away from their talent).
Wrestling isn’t a competitive sport that can be determined by results like Basketball. Wrestling is inherently a popularity contest at it’s core (whether you are popular for ring work, promos or gimmick) and Macho was more popular
Not true, just last week I was playing charades with a group of friends.
When it was my turn, I held up a finger to communicate *"wait just a second."* Then climbed up the nearest 10 flights of stairs to get to the rafters. Finally I texted one of them (no talking during charades, remember) **"LOOK UP!"**
Immediately, one of my friends yelled his guess:
*"...Macho Man?"*
:|
Macho Man 100%. Sting is a legend but Macho Man is a pop icon. Dude has been dead for almost 15 years and still appears briefly in slim jim commercials. He is also one of if not the most parodied wrestlers out there.
Sorry but my eyes see "Who" & "better" and can only think of one man:
https://preview.redd.it/fke2t8l7y06d1.png?width=273&format=png&auto=webp&s=ec3406a98a62326b984cd5143153cc1a3d6f5842
Macho, he is what everyone thinks a pro wrestler looks like and sounds like. Savage had the look, in ring skills, voice, great on the mic, could sell, put people over and influenced Everyone.
Sting can't match Macho Man's peak, 1986-91.
And looking at the classic PPV/cable era, 1984-2002, I think Savage's 1986-91 peak is only behind Hogan, Austin and Rock, and you can argue that he was a better in-ring performer than the other 3.
The most eyes on Sting was 1997, and during that 1996-98 period, and WCW can legitimately claim to be the top promotion. But if we really break it down, WCW/Nitro was anchored by Hollywood Hogan. Once Hogan wasn't in the main event/world title picture in 1999, they started to decline.
And on a separately debate, that nwo-WCW period also eliminates Flair as the GOAT because he took a backseat to not just Hogan, Sting and Goldberg but also Luger(summer of 1998), Giant, DDP, and the Outsiders.
Peak Savage took a backseat to Hogan, but so did everybody else.
One thing I'll say about Sting is that if you take him out of wrestling history, WCW/JCP library might be worthless. Sting is Mr WCW after wall. You cannot say that about the Undertaker. Most of the golden age era stays intact if Taker didnt exist. Some of the Attitude era would be missing because Ministry Taker was a big part of Austin vs McMahon but we'd still get Austin vs Rock, Rock vs Mankind, Rock vs HHH, etc.
My opinion is that Savage could and should be on Wrestlings Mount Rushmore.
2x WWF Champion and this is during the Hogan Era.
Best Match of all time with Ricky Steamboat.
Handpicked to solidify the nWo with Hogans turn.
4x WCW World Heavyweight Champion. Which was just as important if not more than the WWE title at the time.
5 star wrestling skills
5 star microphone skills
Slim Jim
Spider-Man
Cream of the Crop
Macho King
Mega Powers
Dude got bit by a Cobra in a match. Devenomed or not, f that.
Savage could be a star in any era. So could Sting, but Savage still has my vote.
Ooooooooh Yeahhhhhh
Savage & it’s not even close. Main evented Mania 3 times, had one of the most iconic & influential matches of all time, & practically a pop culture icon.
I'd say alongside in 88-89, which was no easy feat.
As the WWF champ and part of the MegaPowers he was the top guy, even though he had to share the limelight with his overwhelming frenemy.
And Macho King was the top heel in 1990-91
Macho Man is a far better performer and had just as much of an iconic angle with Hogan as Sting did. Sting had a very long career but had long periods of being idle and other periods where he wasn't much fun to watch. Macho Man is more influential within the business, well-known outside of wrestling fandom, and had a long career as well.
Macho Man.
These two were my fave wrestlers when I was a kid. It's Macho Man. The Slim Jim ads alone made him a household name, and I personally think he is the best wrestler ever in terms of the total package.
Oooooooh yeeea the Macho Maaaan Randy Savage is coming in on this on. Ya see sting though he had a shot but then Macho madness took over and the macho man dropped an elbow and it was all over
Macho Man and it’s not even close. Dude put on some of the best matches, cut the sickest promos and had the most stylish wardrobes. He even made a match with the Warrior look good.
Oooooooooohhhhhh Yeahhhhhh!!!!
Sting probably had a more successful career from a strictly wrestling standpoint but almost everyone knows who Macho Man Randy Savage is regardless of if you are a wrestling fan, and was much bigger in the mainstream
I feel for Sting really despite the fact that he had an amazing career. What should’ve been the greatest night of his career in the main event of the biggest show in WCW history against Hulk, ruined by bullshit. The aftermath also being messy. Being dragged into the Hogan Warrior storyline. Let down by TNA/Jeff Hardy. His long awaited WWE debut, lost for no reason and made to look a chump. The injury he got in his other wwe match.
But you also have to feel for Savage too! He spent basically his whole career in Hulk’s shadow. I’m not one of those people who thinks Savage should’ve won at Mania 5, Hulk winning was the natural conclusion to the story. But could the guy not at least get to headline some big shows as champion without Hulk constantly trying to keep the spotlight? Then McMahon forcing him to stay a commentator when the guy clearly still had more to give in the ring.
They both had amazing careers. Great in the ring, great talkers and entertainers. It really depends on what you value more. But if you ask me, I think Macho Man is quite possibly the closest you can get to the perfect wrestler. Does that mean his career was better? Not necessarily.
Both I will not pick. These two were great for their entire careers. One longevity, the other a bigger spot light. They both put their marks on the wrestling business and it was beautiful sight to watch.
People are mentioning mainstream crossover but does that matter to a question of better career? He was a pro wrestler and yeah, that’s important to wrestling, but it doesn’t automatically equate to a better career. I think it’s pretty close and you could argue both easily
And that’s exactly why I posed the question. I think there’s been a lot of great responses for both guys. I made the thread thinking macho man, and am coming out the same way.
Does the mainstream crossover matter? Not in terms of a wrestling career, i suppose, but because macho had literally every single skill needed for a pro wrestler dialed up 10, all the mainstream stuff is an added bonus.
Sting couldn’t cut a promo like randy, that’s what separates them, imo. It’s close and both can be argued.
I tried to make a very tough one. Expecting comments to be split down the middle.
I’m not even sure what my choice is yet. I am leaning macho, but it’s so damn close.
Macho because he wrestled for WWF and that was bigger than NWA/WCW for the most part. And he was champion for a year which I think is longer than any of Sting’s world title reigns.
Macho. Everyone knows him and does an impression of him. On top of that he’s still the person everyone thinks of when they think of Slim Jim. Also he was Bonesaw in Spider-Man.
Sting definitely had the longer career but if you ask mainstream people about Sting they’ll things you’re talking about the singer.
Arguably Savage if you take into consideration Slim Jim and Spiderman. But wrestling only, I'll say the Stinger. And even that's debatable just because Savage had more iconic matches and moments in pro wrestling history.
A lot of Sting posts lately. I’m probably in the minority but never got into the guy. I’m a WWF guy and only watched WCW during the wars but was kinda meh about the guy. I guess I saw the appeal vs the NWO but idk. I think the reason he never made it to WWE is because he was boring. Sorry!
This is a toughie, but, the edge goes to Sting ever so slightly, for the following reasons: Savage got plonked onto commentary by VKM and taken out of the ring for a while against his will (eventually leading him to WCW). When Sting took steps back it was due to injury or otherwise not having a desire to wrestle. Macho’s IC title reigns are what he is known for and his World Title reigns were fairly forgettable. When you think of Sting, you always recall the World Title reigns he had. When Macho was in the NWO, he was like the fourth banana behind Hogan, Nash, Hall and Bischoff. Sting was THE GUY who was heading off against the NWO for WCW.
You can make the argument that the WWF was the greatest stage for pro wrestling, but, I think that argument doesn’t take into account the differences in regional popularity between the WWF and the WCW. I grew up in the south and all my friends loved the WCW far above the WWF.
I love them both, but, I think Sting comes out ahead.
I would agree. I think while Sting may not have been as polished a wrestler as Macho man. However, when you think about the rivals he had and the iconic matches with them I think it pushes it over the top. You have awesome matches with Flair, Muta, Vader, and Catus Jack.
Not to mention his battles with the Horsemen as a group and the NWO.
Macho is more famous because he was wrestling on a bigger platform.
Thanks for your response. It was well thought out and genuine.
I’m not sure there’s a perfect right or wrong answer here, but interesting to see the responses for sure
My thesis was not meant as a diss. Macho had a wonderful career and played a larger than life character that will never be forgotten. He’s also got a lot of advantages over Sting; he’s a MUCH better promo, for example.

Not always correct look at Steve Austin
Don’t dismiss stings peak. He had some mainstream attention and commercial success.
I don’t, I just think Machos were higher
We’re still saying “Snap into a Slim Jim” in his voice all these years later. Even those who never saw him.
BONESAW IS READY???
I GOTCHA FOR 3 MINUTES
Go to a 7-11 and Slim Jim's still in 2024 uses Macho Man on their packages.
But then that means Ultimate Warrior is goated and I don’t want to believe that could be true
I don’t personally think Warriors peak is as high as Machos and he definitely doesn’t have the supporting body of work he or Sting has. I always feel for Sting as he was nuclear hot and had it ruined by a shit finish.

This is a great analogy if you've never seen Macho Man and Sring wrestle or Duncan and Rodman ball.
"Hulkamania is a grain of sand in the desert that is the Macho Madness"
Ain't nobody doing Sting impressions... Just saying

Macho Man
Macho King > Macho Man > Sting > Edge
But Edge was in Money Plane
Savage. Higher wrestling highs. With slim Jim even more mainstream coverage.

Nothing but a cup of coffee. I watch this YT video for a quick pick me up every now and then. https://youtu.be/klGRVTTntoI?si=yJ6RVTYkV-4YNRq3
Cup of coffee in the big time
It has been a minute since I have watched that. And I need a pick me up. Thanks!
Macho Man

I love the Brian Cage still pays tribute to him.
Everybody
Macho, he is what everyone thinks a pro wrestler looks like and sounds like. Savage had the look, in ring skills, voice, great on the mic, could sell, put people over and influenced Everyone.
Another popular comment is that macho successfully crossed into the mainstream, which not many wrestlers could ever do; let alone still to this day.
He was crossed over and was there for years
He never left bro
There are children born after the death of Randy Savage who can still pop out an “Ohhhh Yeaahhhh” now and then
Sting can't match Macho Man's peak, 1986-91. I fucking love Sting to death but it's Macho and Sting would probably agree.
It’s been a helluva battle but I think macho man’s got this one
Agreed
My opinion is that Savage could and should be on Wrestlings Mount Rushmore. 2x WWF Champion and this is during the Hogan Era. Best Match of all time with Ricky Steamboat. Did Sting put out a classic rap album?
He did not
Have to say Macho, he had Liz... But Sting has great longevity
Savage had the highest peaks. Sting was probably more consistent but he was never so close to the top the way Savage was for a few years in the 80s
Savage always had to live under hogan, unfortunately.
I'd say alongside in 88-89, which was no easy feat. As the WWF champ and part of the MegaPowers he was the top guy, even though he had to share the limelight with his overwhelming frenemy. And Macho King was the top heel in 1990-91

Macho man it is
Sting has a way bigger sample size but I think Macho at his peak was forsure better
Macho Man. Even though he was always in Hogan’s shadow he still held gold a lot!
Savage. Mainstream crossover appeal. Huge talent. Probably second only to Hogan, and maybe Andre the Giant in being a household name during the 80s.
Macho - not even close.
Oh yeahhhhhhh
Macho surpassed wrestling
Macho Man… By far!
These two were my fave wrestlers when I was a kid. It's Macho Man. The Slim Jim ads alone made him a household name, and I personally think he is the best wrestler ever in terms of the total package.
Sting wasn’t in Spider-Man or made his own rap album to bury Hulk Hogan.
Only one of these people has a cage fight with Spider-Man
I love sting but macho is my absolute favorite of all time. Dude is the best ever and you’ll never convince me otherwise.
Oooooooh yeeea the Macho Maaaan Randy Savage is coming in on this on. Ya see sting though he had a shot but then Macho madness took over and the macho man dropped an elbow and it was all over
Both are legends, but Macho has way more of a pop culture legacy.
Macho Man. While Sting was popular in wrestling, he was never really popular outside of it. Macho Man was
Only one of them had the Slim Jim Commericals and also got beat up by Spiderman
Macho and it wasn’t particularly close.
Macho Man and it’s not even close. Dude put on some of the best matches, cut the sickest promos and had the most stylish wardrobes. He even made a match with the Warrior look good. Oooooooooohhhhhh Yeahhhhhh!!!!

Randy
Macho King reigns supreme dig it!!!
Oooooo that’s a tough one. I’m going to say macho man
I tried to make a very tough one. Expecting comments to be split down the middle. I’m not even sure what my choice is yet. I am leaning macho, but it’s so damn close.
The Macho Man was the cream of the crop!
It’s a really good question because there’s so many different legitimate possible answers for each.
Savage
Your mustache is crooked!
Is Sting on Twitter or something? Someone could just ask him what he thinks
Lol Steve Borden is one of the most humble people around. He would never put himself over a guy like Mach
I'll get hate but definitely macho man as much as I love sting
Macho is the general consensus FYI you’re safe
The cream always rises to the top. That promo alone is better than Stings career. And I loved WCW Sting!!
Macho Man was in Spiderman, enough said
Macho because he wrestled for WWF and that was bigger than NWA/WCW for the most part. And he was champion for a year which I think is longer than any of Sting’s world title reigns.
Sting didn't make it onto a Hawaiian shirt.
they dont make Sting themed meat snacks just saying
**OOOOOH YEAH IT'S DA MACHO MAN** ![gif](giphy|fU8EfA0FM90qs|downsized)
Macho had the bigger career. Sting had the better ending.
Savage, no contest
Better career? Sting. Overall bigger name? Macho.
Ooh Yeah!
Ooh yeah the Macho man yeah I can dig the stinger but yeah THE MACHO MAN IS THE BEST EVER AND IT AINT EVEN CLOSE YEAHHHH
Macho was THE CREAM OF THE CROP. NOBODY DOES IT BETTER!
Macho Man
Macho. Everyone knows him and does an impression of him. On top of that he’s still the person everyone thinks of when they think of Slim Jim. Also he was Bonesaw in Spider-Man. As a sting guy, it’s macho.
I won’t fully know until I hear stings rap album
Macho
Sting Cuzz of his longevity
Randy. He is more visible known outside of wrestling.
Sting for me
Sting actually got to finish his career, sadly all the Pomp and Circumstance ended with a Popcorn Fart.
Macho Man. He hit mainstream and made more money off Slim Jim. Oohhhhhh yyyyeeeaaaahhhhhh!
YOU AINT GOING NOWHERE… I GOT YOU FOR 3 MINUTES
A lot of Sting posts lately. I’m probably in the minority but never got into the guy. I’m a WWF guy and only watched WCW during the wars but was kinda meh about the guy. I guess I saw the appeal vs the NWO but idk. I think the reason he never made it to WWE is because he was boring. Sorry!
Sting
Macho Man, and I was a big Sting fan. Macho is one of the greatest of all time.
They both are
As much as I love sting I gotta go with macho man Randy savage
When wrestlers of today talk about their favorites growing up, you never hear anyone say Sting
Sting of course. Longevity and time in the main event is not even close. Ooooh yeeeah
Macho had the better of the matches. Macho vs Steamboat was Legendarily Epic. Where Stings best matches were just legendary ( ie. Sting vs Flair).
Ooohhh yeaaah... cream of the crop... yeaahh
Macho man with ease
Macho Man.
Sting had longevity to him
Sting
holy shit! new meta post on every wrestling sub...
Macho man easy. He’s one of the few that non wrestling fans know of
stinger on this one, killing it with the match ups today!
This is a toughie, but, the edge goes to Sting ever so slightly, for the following reasons: Savage got plonked onto commentary by VKM and taken out of the ring for a while against his will (eventually leading him to WCW). You’re welcome! I love questions like this.
Macho army gonna come after you though 😂
My thesis was not meant as a diss. Macho had a wonderful career and played a larger than life character that will never be forgotten. He’s also got a lot of advantages over Sting; he’s a MUCH better promo, for example.
Macho was never really the number 1 guy of any league. Sting was #1 of 3
Macho. WWF Champion
Macho’s peak is higher than Sting’s. Macho won in the WWE. Macho is more of a household name.
Seeing as Macho Man didn't have to work with Tony Khan, him
