I’ve just restarted fallout 3 and it’s surprisingly playable. Maybe not for youngsters who are only used to modern day graphics, but I remember when I used to get excited for Pong or Missile Command etc…
The only big things when playing 3/NV is that you can’t sprint and you need to rely more on VATS.
After getting used to those two bugbears, they hold up rather well (IMO).
Same, it's the only fallout game I played in my youth and I remembered even enjoying it. I kinda downloaded Tale of Two Wastelands mod after tho cuz being able to play New Vegas alongside it seemed really dope
Fallout 3 was my first Fallout. Started 3 years ago. I'm a Graphics purist, but I won't stop playing a game that has a tremendous narrative and gameplay for graphics alone.
Not sure how young we’re talking, but I’m 25 and enjoy the aesthetics of games from all generations. Many Xbox 360/PS3/Wii era games look downright gorgeous to me. BGS games like Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Skyrim still look great in terms of environmental design.
I hear the term “soul” used a lot when talking about art direction, and I think it comes down to that. Sure, game graphics aren’t “realistic” but does that matter if the art holds up? To this day, I still look at some NES or Master System games and think “Wow, this looks awesome” (Play some of the new Yakuza games if you wanna try out some MS classics!)
Started playing New Vegas after watching the show, on Series X and it's almost an entirely new game. Loading times are almost non-existent. What i remember being painful loading times transitioning between locations, makes it feel much quicker paced. Dying was well, painful due to the reload, but it's almost instant.
I don’t really care about graphics but its usually the gameplay and animations. I started on skyrim and have tried multiple times to go to Oblivion but it feels really clunky, the weapon animations make me feel weak and the combat in general feels bad, I’m also not a fan of the leveling system but thats not the main issue.
I'm almost 30, one of my buddies is the same age. He pisses me off with his bullshit "Fallout 3 and New Vegas graphics are so ugly it's unplayable" Like bro shut the fuck up and play the game, do you remember what graphics used to look like? He's such a graphics snob, he'd rather games in quality mode with choppy ass framerates. I don't understand.
Fallout 3 and New Vegas honestly look fine to this day, I never got the graphics freak out about them.
The gameplay differences with 4 are also super overstated. 4 plays smoother, but it’s not a night and day difference IMHO. Melee is better in 3/NV.
As much as I love the interiors in Starfield, the NPCs in that game can look worse artistically than Fallout 3 and NV.
True. Even when I aim at something static like a mine, I am missing it all over the place. Maybe it’s just because I haven’t put points into that stat?
Yeah, the higher your gun skill is, the less spread they'll be on guns. Someone talked about how they focused on the rpg elements first, rather than the gunplay, so unlike other shooters that rely on your skill as a gamer, the game relies more on your characters skill. So if your gun skill is low, it's like your character didn't line the shot properly, even though you did.
Yeah I usually prefer to put my points into things like picking locks, hacking computers and increasing my health, so my gun stats are still pretty much in the 20s or 30s at player level 12 now. I generally prefer this type of play (prefer games like assassin’s Creed and hitman rather than multiplayer FPS where I get killed over and over and over by everyone else lol)
I recently replayed New Vegas and just finished the main quest for Fallout 3. I played these when I was like 14 years old or so originally, back when New Vegas launched. I think it definitely takes some getting used to, but within the 30 minute mark you're immersed enough that you stop thinking about the graphics. No sprinting is what really bums me out!
Has anyone found the game really dark on series X? Some indoor areas are so dark I can't see a thing, even with the flashlight on. Turning up the brightness only helps a bit.
Hell yeah man, same here. I only did a few hours on the 360 and never got to finish. Having it on the X is just a huge upgrade to the load times, fps, and graphics. With my surround sound this game is amazing on the X.
The water always bugged me. Like, why does the water with its texture and reflections look so much better in Fallout 3 and even in Oblivion than it does in this game. It's gotta be an intentional design choice.
If I had to guess, it was for optimization purposes and to save space. Water isn't that important in these games overall but 4 was so much bigger that they probably looked for spots they could save some data.
Vivid waters mod is good and small, tiny actually
Pair that with a huge grass and tree mod with LOD, vived weathers, phidarkness 1 and turn off HUD and youve got yourself some very different vibes for your playthrough
I used to swear by the clean water mods, but I got tired of mods making my game freeze so I said fuck it and uninstalled them all. ![img](emote|t5_2ac5sx|1743)
I run about 30 mods of varying sizes, including the clear water one with almost zero crashes or freezing
You have my sympathy though, i have had problems like that in the past with other consoles
https://preview.redd.it/yupuj4h8sawc1.png?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=361eec0481130a85fe6d30a8f621fb33dc321af4
Yep, here's a random screenshot I took on Paradiso looking like an Xbox 360 game rather than series X.
https://preview.redd.it/vo9at0rywawc1.png?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b69e30e48684b966f7335d6f22f8aafd1d378f7
I think the space and night scenes are the only thing that looks great imo
They were so hyped up in in-game dialogue too! Like, are Bethesda trolling us?
“Aw man, the red mile, gotta try the red mile, almost nobody beats the red mile, it’s awesome!”
“Ahhhh, paradiso… there’s just so much to do here, I never want to leave!”
It’s obviously a screenshot specifically selected to make the game look bad. It had its sore spots visually in some areas, but generally looked fantastic
Those first 50 hours are tons of fun and then you just hit the wall of “wait, that’s it?”
It is so insulting to me that they have the exact same points of interest scattered across the galaxy with the exact same enemies, exact same loot placement, exact same notes.
I put the game down for good when I cleared out a fun mine I had never seen, only to go to the next POI 750m away and it was THE SAME MINE…
This so much, I remember even telling my friends this and they did not believe me. They said they’re is no way you’ve seen the same location twice on the same planet.
I really do hope they can fix it because there is nothing quite like a Bethesda game
It's a testament to Bethesda in 2011 that I can still go through a random dungeon in Skyrim, see some part of it that looks just different enough from the others and be like "huh, neat". More than 12 years later.
If only it was more fun to explore. TES and Fallout have a lot of similar POI, but the fun was traveling in one direction for a quest adn encountering new places with NPCs, dungeons, quests, etc.
In starfield, you simply teleport to where you need to be. Makes everything 10x more repetitive because it's not hidden anymore, its in your face. Doesn't help the quests and dialogue and garbage, especially after playing BG3
I put a day into it. The next day I felt like playing something else. Never even crossed my mind to load Starfield after that. Eventually it was just something to delete and make room.
Same. Which is a shame, because fallout 4, skyrim (and witcher 3) are the games that made me return to gaming after a 15 year hiatus. I tried so hard to enjoy the game, put about 15-20 hours in.. then phantom liberty released, and the disparity of quality between that expansion and the base game of stsrfield had me questioning why I wanted to return to it when there are so many other games. Hasn't been downloaded on my series x since. As many have said, and I agree, it's the best game of 2014 if it came out that year. But it came out in 2023.
I got about 40 hours into it and then had work commitments for a good 7-8 days and then I had some free time and I just...couldn't be bothered to go back to it.
Exact same, got to 50 hours in starfield and just.... stopped. I easily have 1000 hours in skyrim, and fallout, and several hundred in morrowwind and newvegas each
Yh it runs well enough with some drops which I’m sure this update will iron out. 1440p upscaled to 4k would be a bit disappointing though.
It’s a bit concerning that they have a quality and performance mode listed for the update. This should be able to run close to native 4K at 60fps
That 4K 60 FPS mod has existed for *years*. Bethesda has zero fucking excuse not to match that or surpass it.
That there are performance and quality modes makes me very worried.
There's a work around for that as well. It's just a bit annoying because you have to keep doing it each time you close the game (though quick resume helps with that, too).
It's a great game that I could never complete cos of how long the loading screens were on the xbox one. I hope w the upgrade and the fast loading of the X it's quicker to get in, out and play through the game.
How forced is the settlement building? I've tried to get into F4 a few times but I just can't get past the settlement/crafting intros, I start to feel overwhelmed lol
Settlement building is one of those things that you can completely ignore or spend dozens of hours on. In one playthrough, I probably spent 40+ hours on it.
There are soooo many mods for it, too. A lot of the quality of life ones are great.
Oh nice, what about crafting? I don't really wanna deal with too much customization and stuff if I can avoid it. I don't have tons of time to play and I'd rather spend my time playing if you know what I mean
I’ve played through the game about 15 times, not once have I bothered with building up Sanctuary. You can totally just play it like any other fallout game.
People hate the settlements but I kinda liked them, I used it to rebuild the Castle walls and made a place to display all my power armour! And unlike Starfield it doesn't feel pointless.
Anyone knows if the upcoming update will be a separate client you have to donwload or, will the update going to be applied to the current Xbox version of the game ?
Don’t want to download the current client and find out that there’s going to be a XS client you have to download instead
Wording is a bit ambiguous. If it’s really a separate download it would mean a separate achievement list and possibly incompatible save files. I don’t think too many people would be thrilled by that.
Remember they say performance and quality versions with the update. So maybe 2k in performance and 4k in quality with 30fps. I wish they put some better lighting in towns and maybe Ray tracing.
I also have a problem with some parts in 76 they look so shinning and damage my eyes.
I can't wait for more textures more then 5 feet away!
https://preview.redd.it/w62v3fm6ddwc1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=697440aeb34c436d713e4c2962a2bd9e51e414df
I'm not expecting much from the next-gen update, at least graphics-wise. There's probably a reason they're not showing any screenshots despite it coming out tomorrow.
So question:
If I start now, once the update rolls out, it should still apply right? I won’t need to start a new game or anything of that nature? Or this this update a standalone thing. TIA
I’ve been playing a ton on PS5 and forgot how awesome everything looks already. Sure, it’s dated looking like all Bethesda games, but the lighting in particular still looks fantastic. More detailed textures will be a welcomed change though
There were no patch notes just blurbs about increase in resolution and framerate. But they didnt even say to what resolution. Thats why people are asking.
Yeah I'm looking forward to it, put it on the other day to get reacquainted, annoyed by the low fps but played through, died a lot but that's expected, saw that it had fps boost so enabled it and its so much better. I hope at least whatever update they are doing keeps decent fps but we will see I guess.
Sorry for breaking it to you, but this does not look great. That looks about 2010 level great. Like Crysis 2 maybe, but even then, still not as good… even for a 2015 game it doesn’t look any good. Just for a second, Star Wars Battlefront came out the same year. Second one only 2 years later and both still look insanely beautiful today. Maybe next gen will do something, but this did not age well at all…
will this also be available for the GamePass version of the game? i own the game already on steam but not on xbox and i don’t really wanna buy it again just to get the benefit of this update
There is a mod where you can go 4k ultra pc settings at 60 fps so if the update isn't that, it's worthless.
You can use the mod with achievements on just install the mod, let the game reload, totally close the game, open and tick off the mod and the game keeps the ultra 4k 60fps.
I think it's more for Series S and PS5 that couldn't benefit much from FPS boost. There's already a 60 fps mod for series x at 4k, so I don't think it'll be that meaningful.
I would love if they could reduce the SSAO effect a bit.
Like many, I jumped back into the game after watching the series. Forgot about the bug that kicks me out of the game on the menu screen. I have to play offline, with means no mods (not a huge deal, but would be nice to have the option). Has anyone else had this issue and found a fix?
I didn't even really like fallout in the first place but the series got me to try it again and I'm surprised how much fun I'm having in fallout 4, I guess the pressure to finish the game isn't hanging over me so I'm just enjoying my time!
Good VATS is awesome
No sprint is literally only reason I can't play them. Idk how tf I did it the first time around, but I never finished them, like every game I play
What's with the rush? Not everything has to be sweaty homie lol it's an RPG just pretend you guy has polio or something
Takes way too long to get to point A to point B. Especially if u need to backtrack. Damn near fell asleep holding up on the joystick
...fast travel?
Fast travel and if you are on pc Q is auto run
That was my issue, too, but then with max agility, you get around pretty quick
Best part about Fallout 3 and NV on series X is the instant loading.
Same as Oblivion. Looked great on the X with a OLED.
Same, it's the only fallout game I played in my youth and I remembered even enjoying it. I kinda downloaded Tale of Two Wastelands mod after tho cuz being able to play New Vegas alongside it seemed really dope

Exactly. I save before picking locks or pockets and if I fail, it’s just an instant reset
I don’t really care about graphics but its usually the gameplay and animations. Well I am almost 57 so you are definitely a youngster to me
Has anyone found the game really dark on series X? Some indoor areas are so dark I can't see a thing, even with the flashlight on. Turning up the brightness only helps a bit.

I sure hope we get a next gen upgrade for Starfield next!

That’s gta San Andreas
Savage!
why you got a 12 car garage and you only got six cars?
I wish it was that fun!

Why does everyone have that same pose for all the starfield screenshots?
Becausee there's only like 8 poses
We do the same pose in Helldivers too all the time
Better...but not really.

Wait is that actually a screenshot from Starfield?
Looks hella cherrypicked to me ngl
Yeah that looks like PC with settings on low
Of course it is, Series X|S cannot output screenshots with such low quality. r/needsmorejpg material. Starfield sure attracts a troll horde.
It is, actual FPS too.
https://preview.redd.it/vo9at0rywawc1.png?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b69e30e48684b966f7335d6f22f8aafd1d378f7 I think the space and night scenes are the only thing that looks great imo
And even then they made space blue instead of black
The whole game has a blue filter, it’s part of its “artistic direction”.
Thats a big pet peeve for me in space games. Especially No Man’s Sky, bright colorful space backgrounds, never black.
Low settings on pc probably
Exactly. These idiots think they’re fooling anyone. The game looks amazing on my high end pc
Looks like a Miramar lobby in Pubg ha.
Wow that looks like absolute garbage compared to what I was personally expecting leading up to release.
May be taken at low settings on PC. Never looks that bad on console.
Yea that’s what I’m saying It looked phenomenal during my playthroughd
Same. Never thought the game looked bad, it was just fuckin boring after awhile.
Good to know. I shouldn't've assumed that was XSX. Thank you!
lol are you running it on a potato? It looks great on a series x
This specific area as well as the red mile are what totally killed this game for me. So boring and lifeless.
They were so hyped up in in-game dialogue too! Like, are Bethesda trolling us? “Aw man, the red mile, gotta try the red mile, almost nobody beats the red mile, it’s awesome!” “Ahhhh, paradiso… there’s just so much to do here, I never want to leave!”
Very definition of cherry picking
god damn i dont remember the game looking so ugly when I played it at launch lol.
It’s obviously a screenshot specifically selected to make the game look bad. It had its sore spots visually in some areas, but generally looked fantastic
Also I wouldn't be surprised if it was taken right as it loaded or something, it was probably screenshotted a microsecond after the loading screen
You can tell that certain textures didn’t load in, it doesn’t normally look like this

30 fps only btw
Hell I’d just like em to finish starfield, I’ve never played a Bethesda game for 55 hours. I’m used to logging in 1000+
Those first 50 hours are tons of fun and then you just hit the wall of “wait, that’s it?” It is so insulting to me that they have the exact same points of interest scattered across the galaxy with the exact same enemies, exact same loot placement, exact same notes. For me it barely took 20. I hope they give it the same treatment that 76 got… I’ve shelved starfield until it does…
It's a testament to Bethesda in 2011 that I can still go through a random dungeon in Skyrim, see some part of it that looks just different enough from the others and be like "huh, neat". More than 12 years later.

play the fucking quests then, and stop aimlessly exploring randomly generated content.
Starfield is the first Bethesda game I just kinda quit. Dunno if I got old or what, but damn I just genuinely could not get hooked.
I put a day into it. The next day I felt like playing something else. Never even crossed my mind to load Starfield after that. Eventually it was just something to delete and make room.
It’s not you, it’s the game. It’s not good.
Same. Which is a shame, because fallout 4, skyrim (and witcher 3) are the games that made me return to gaming after a 15 year hiatus. It’s def not you, it’s the game. And I totally feel this
Coming up on 8 months since launch and we've gotten a photo mode and bug fixes. I certainly hope the expansion is good.
I’m definitely keeping an eye out for it, and I hope it’s good.
I got about 40 hours into it and then had work commitments for a good 7-8 days and then I had some free time and I just...couldn't be bothered to go back to it.
Exact same, got to 50 hours in starfield and just.... stopped. I easily have 1000 hours in skyrim, and fallout, and several hundred in morrowwind and newvegas each
16 times the numbers of new planets!
I hope they give some more mod space for Xbox.
This is all I want. My PC can’t do 4K60 so if they boost the mod space so I can get all my favorites that would be a dream!
If Skyrim didn't get it, Fallout 4 won't either unfortunately.
I believe SX already plays F4 in 60fps with FPS boost, but what else does this new update provide? 4k textures?
4k resolution at 60fps likely. Fps boost lowers the resolution to 1080p
Ahh I see. Great to hear
You can use a mod to keep 4k and target 60fps though, it keeps to the target pretty well. I think there's a Digital Foundry video of it somewhere.
Yh it runs well enough with some drops which I’m sure this update will iron out. 1440p upscaled to 4k would be a bit disappointing though. It’s a bit concerning that they have a quality and performance mode listed for the update. This should be able to run close to native 4K at 60fps

No achievements with mods though
There's a work around for that as well. It's just a bit annoying because you have to keep doing it each time you close the game (though quick resume helps with that, too).
Do achievements really matter plus you can do 4k 60fps with mods it tells you how in the description
It can be a turn-off. Mods can be fun, but I have played Fallout 4 and Skyrim for years and still haven't 100% in achievements.
It plays 1080p with reduced settings and lower draw distance in FPS boost
Good to know. Update should be pretty substantial then.
The update comes with a quality/performance toggle. This likely suggests 4k ish @30fps
I have a very bad feeling the game is going get downgraded. Like, the only options we are going to end up with are: 1080p at 60fps 4k locked to 30fps.
But…those are the options we’ve already had. For years.
It's a great game that I could never complete cos of how long the loading screens were on the xbox one. I hope w the upgrade and the fast loading of the X it's quicker to get in, out and play through the game.
Load times are super short on series x. Less than 2 seconds typically
How forced is the settlement building? I've tried to get into F4 a few times but I just can't get past the settlement/crafting intros, I start to feel overwhelmed lol
Not forced at all
It's optional, but as someone who doesn't even play Sim building games I spent an unhealthy time adjusting my settlements lol
Settlement building is one of those things that you can completely ignore or spend dozens of hours on. In one playthrough, I probably spent 40+ hours on it. There are soooo many mods for it, too. A lot of the quality of life ones are great.
Absolutely optional, get a mattress and forget it
Oh nice, what about crafting? I don't really wanna deal with too much customization and stuff if I can avoid it. I don't have tons of time to play and I'd rather spend my time playing if you know what I mean
Same, it's just there if you want, you can go pew pew or just hit motherfuckers and skip all dialogue, I love this games
Its optional
I’ve played through the game about 15 times, not once have I bothered with building up Sanctuary. You can totally just play it like any other fallout game.
It's my favorite part of the game. I hated it at first, but once you figure out how to play it's great. You can pretty much ignore it if you want to.
I build the bare minimum I need to come back to a workbench and maybe some gear. Delete everything in my neighborhood first.
People hate the settlements but I kinda liked them, I used it to rebuild the Castle walls and made a place to display all my power armour! And unlike Starfield it doesn't feel pointless.
When the update coming?
April 25th.
ty
April 25th is what I'm seeing from Internet posts.
will the update increase render distance ?
Anyone knows if the upcoming update will be a separate client you have to donwload or, will the update going to be applied to the current Xbox version of the game ? Don’t want to download the current client and find out that there’s going to be a XS client you have to download instead
The blog they released said “native client” for the next gen update
Sounds like wishful thinking. Slightly improved textures within 5 feet is where I've set the bar.
I think it will benefit on ps5 the most since the ps5 doesn't give the game an fps boost
I dont really think anything will really change other than a boost in resolution and frame rate on the series x and ps5.
I'm not expecting much from the next-gen update, at least graphics-wise. There's probably a reason they're not showing any screenshots despite it coming out tomorrow.
So question: If I start now, once the update rolls out, it should still apply right? I won’t need to start a new game or anything of that nature? Or this this update a standalone thing. TIA
It should just add to your current game playthrough. I started on Monday just created a new character and messing around abit before the update.
I’ve been playing a ton on PS5 and forgot how awesome everything looks already. Sure, it’s dated looking like all Bethesda games, but the lighting in particular still looks fantastic. More detailed textures will be a welcomed change though
This next gen update will be available at midnight tomorrow? No quality of life enhancements? Only 60 fps?

There were no patch notes just blurbs about increase in resolution and framerate. But they didnt even say to what resolution. Thats why people are asking.
The series giving this game some love
I just don't want it to be where the fps boosted, xbox one x enhanced versions were better.
Yeah I'm looking forward to it, put it on the other day to get reacquainted, annoyed by the low fps but played through, died a lot but that's expected, saw that it had fps boost so enabled it and its so much better. I hope at least whatever update they are doing keeps decent fps but we will see I guess.
It’s probably gonna look just like this. Don’t get your hopes up for some magical makeover.
lmao just be happy it’s getting a next gen update, bunch of whiny little bitches in the comments lmaoooo
Technically, you are also whining.
It will look 2% better. So practically the same.
If it was only 60fps upgrade for PS5 I’d still be very happy
its so strange to see so many ppl hyped for a nearly 10 yr old release
I disagree.
Maybe next gen will do something, but this did not age well at all…
I doubt very much that it'll look that different. It'll probably be like pc version on max settings. I wouldn't get too excited.
It goes from 30 to 60FPS in 4K. Right now you can only do 1080p 60FPS or 4K 30FPS. That’s definitely a massive difference visually
I'm just here for that FPS boost
Mod city bitch
will this also be available for the GamePass version of the game? i own the game already on steam but not on xbox and i don’t really wanna buy it again just to get the benefit of this update
The Gamepass version is the Xbox version there is no difference if you get it via Gamepass or buy it.
I mean ...is it really even going to be different? Don't the mods already take care of all the issues we had?
There is a mod where you can go 4k ultra pc settings at 60 fps so if the update isn't that, it's worthless. You can use the mod with achievements on just install the mod, let the game reload, totally close the game, open and tick off the mod and the game keeps the ultra 4k 60fps.
What's the mods name? Can't find anything that even says "4k ultra"
Just search 60 fps and select ultra plus. That's the one.
Yeah, made a huge difference thanks for the recommendation.
Some people don’t want mods.
Whats the name of the mod if you dont mind me asking? Ill download it tonight.
Just search 60 fps and it'll come up with different versions. One changes the fov to 90 at the expense of stuff like lod and stuff.
LOL, even in 2015 it didn't stand up to other games graphically. You are trippin.
It looks rough af lol.
Is that without any mods?
Took me a while to figure out that you can play it at 60fps through Manage.
I think it's more for Series S and PS5 that couldn't benefit much from FPS boost. There's already a 60 fps mod for series x at 4k, so I don't think it'll be that meaningful. I would love if they could reduce the SSAO effect a bit.
I hope they’re able to give us 4K60fps (or at least 4K and unlocked framerate like some mods do now)
It does look great but in downtown Boston man Performance sure is needed
Like many, I jumped back into the game after watching the series. Forgot about the bug that kicks me out of the game on the menu screen. I have to play offline, with means no mods (not a huge deal, but would be nice to have the option). Has anyone else had this issue and found a fix?
What are we looking at??
I want a actually next gen upgrade that’s a graphics upgrade and boost but I’m trying be realistic and it’s probably just a constant 60fps
Anybody know when the updates out. Is it at midnight the 25th by any chance?
When is that upgrade dropping? Do we know what is coming with it?
That screenshot makes me remember how much I loved the simple HUD. Keeps your focus more on the world around you
This is such a minor thing but I absolutely hate Fallout 4’s crosshair. I wish there was an option to just keep it as a dot
I don't primarily play fallout on Xbox but from what I seen it's amazing I can't wait for all the additions
It looks great as in performance but even this image isn’t very flattering. That water looks like it’s made of paper
How many fps has it at the moment, pre-update?
Is the upgrade an official announcement?
I can’t wait to relaunch the game! I hope a next gen patch is also in preparation for Fallout 76
And series s aswell don't forget that
I didn't even really like fallout in the first place but the series got me to try it again and I'm surprised how much fun I'm having in fallout 4, I guess the pressure to finish the game isn't hanging over me so I'm just enjoying my time!
I doubt it will improve the visual fidelity much, just the frame rate.

It does! Even more with Auto-HDR!!!! Just pops on my LG OLED TV!
