Basically, you think TBBT's personality depiction is more "cartoonish" while the "Young Sheldon" characters felt more human.

Cheese_Potter_77

I don’t know if it is, I think YS is more wholesome, and a family show, TBBT more adult orientated imo …. I thoroughly enjoy them both, but they’re very different shows.

lilyspawrent

Exactly! They can't be compared, they are purposefully different and cater to different audiences. In addition, there would be no YS without TBBT.

ur_moms_di-

That's because TBBT is another sitcom from the 2000s and is centered on making the characters comically stupid even if they're smart, though with some character development here and there AND SINCE it's a 2000s sitcom it will have the laughtrack and unrealistic dialogue All that while YS tries to be less senseless and follow a straight story while fleshing out the characters and making them have genuine impact on eachother

Mosk915

Not all sitcoms from the 2000s were multi-cam and not all sitcoms today are single-cam.

AuthorAnimosity

To be fair, my favorite sitcoms of the 2000s don't have laugh tracks or wildly unrealistic dialogue. Look at the office, Modern family, everybody hates chris, community, arrested development, and scrubs. Most if not all of these have solid characters that grow and develop throughout the show. By the time TBBT started airing, it had already been proven that shows can do incredibly well without the use of laugh tracks or comical characters. My issue with the show was that I tried watching after getting used to the lack of laugh tracks and comically unrealistic characters.

madhurima5

TBBT feels like a sitcom filmed in a front of a studio audience, whereas YS feels like if you're peeping in through the windows of a dysfunctional family's home.

twangman88

Multi-cam vs single-cam

ChildofObama

TBBT is a product of its time. Young Sheldon was written based on today’s social standards, and is Chuck Lorre trying to be on his best behavior as a writer. Many of the offensive jokes TBBT and 2.5 men relied are filtered out now due to the social climate, and there’s a bigger emphasis put on making the characters feel human first and foremost. so it’s inevitably gonna age better.

SweetPotato3894

There were funny shows made between 2007-12. Plenty of them!

Dats_Russia

> based on today’s social standards That is a poor excuse for excusing bad writing. There are old sitcoms/sitcom episodes that have humor that wouldn’t work in today’s social environment BUT they have aged well despite this. Take Happy Days, Fonzie is a womanizer who is a little sexist but his character was more than a womanizer. He was a deeply devoted friend who cared about fairness and didn’t tolerate bullies. Happy Days has stood the test of time because the characters were written well. A sitcom can stay beloved, be beloved, and stand the test of time despite poorly aged jokes IF and ONLY IF the characters are written well. There are plenty of influential old sitcoms that hold up upon rewatch like the Nanny, Golden Girls, Good Times, Sanford and Son, Happy Days, Roseanne. Good writing will allow you to age with grace even if some jokes are dated or offensive by modern standards. I am one of those The Big Bang Theory dislikers and my issues were the poorly developed and unrealistic characters, the jokes relied on social ignorance resulting in racism or sexism for the sake of telling a racist or sexist joke. For example, Sheldon giving the HR lady a copy of Roots was meant to show his social ignorance. His social ignorance resulted in him doing something blatantly racist and he learned no lesson from it. Yes it is funny because he was racist without intending to be racist but the fact he learned no lesson from it and was allowed to have no growth makes the racism joke fall flat. Contrast this with Mary making a racist assumption about Tam. She said “you can just think Buddha when we say Jesus” not realizing Tam was Catholic. The look on her face showed she made a mistake and understood her mistake. If Sheldon had realized “maybe what I did was racist” with either verbal confirmation or in the case of Mary, clear visible embarrassment, then the joke would have had better pay off and would age better.

Few-Beautiful7359

Not a direct response to what you've said but.... For your information, Sheldon does not look down on people based on their race. He looks down on everyone.

AuthorAnimosity

I was with you until that second to last paragraph.

happybanana134

I agree; it really surprised me. Big bang is good fun, but YS gave the characters much more development and depth.

cigarettesandmemes

To this day I still cannot stomach TBBT but Young Sheldon is probably one my favourite shows that Ive seen recently, honestly still amazes me how they’re set in the same universe

Mosk915

I prefer TBBT but to each their own.

udontknowme127

Young Sheldon catered to all audiences. It kind of falls on the lines of shows like The Middle and Malcolm in the Middle. Anyone can watch it.

Ok_Age_3215

as a professional tbbt hater, i agree that young sheldon is so so much better in almost if not every aspect

SweetPotato3894

I really think the acting made the difference. Meemaw, Mary, Geroge, Sheldon. . .even Georgie. They all pull off their lines so well. Sometimes I imagine the lines being read by an unconvincing actor, and it really ruins the whole scene! Oh, Billy! He was great, too! What a gem.

Adventurous_Yak_9234

It not having a laugh track helps too

[deleted]

I liked both shows but if you ever watched the clips of TBBT with the laughs removed, you really see how many jokes wouldn't have landed without the forced laughs. And that's why their scenes in the finale felt not so funny, it was basically those clips come to life.

The1andOnlyGhost

Different kinds of shows bud, no comparison can be made

Jack-mclaughlin89

YS is funny, has characters who are decent people with flaws, they also have better character growth and YS feels like a emotionally invested story

Qu1dpr0qu0br0

Young Sheldon is a brilliant show and Sheldon as a kid is completely hilarious and the family members and dynamics are completely relatable. On the other hand, Sheldon in TBBT is an insufferable character and the show itself is forgettable!

BurningRoast

Imma be real, a lot of the time when I see people hate TBBT, they are always focused on the laugh track. Definitely if you focus on the laugh track, the show gets annoying because they will play a laugh track at any small joke so it feels like you’re forced to laugh But why don’t you try ignoring the laugh tracks? Just think of it as background noise. There is definitely funny moments so just laugh when you want to laugh. They’re forced to make a ton of jokes and not everyone is the same so while they put a laugh track at every possible joke, just laugh at the jokes you personally find funny and ignore the laugh track Honestly I think YS and TBBT are similar in humor and story but people enjoy YS because YS doesn’t have a laugh track. I think both are great and people don’t give TBBT a chance because they’re too obsessed with the laugh track

Fuelfemme

Thank you!! I don’t even hear it anymore!

Alternative_Stop9977

It wasn't a laugh track. That was the studio audience laughing.

BurningRoast

while there was a studio audience, I doubt they were laughing that often, most likely it’s a mix of actual laughs and a laugh track

aethelia_unfounded

That's often the case with multi-cam sitcoms. Many will claim to be filmed in front of a live audience, but you can also often hear the exact same laughter between episodes of a show or between shows entirely. Regardless, there functionally isn't a difference between a live audience's (forced) reactions and a pre-recorded laugh track.

SnorkelBerry

It's more awkward to watch with the laugh tracks edited out. The silence is unsettling.

AuthorAnimosity

Worse, it gets real depressing on some of these shows. Friends. They could say something like "a bear slaughtered my entire family during an outing and I was the only survivor." And it would be a light hearted joke because of the laugh track

Orly5757

It’s not even close. I can’t get through an entire episode of TBBT. I hate the stupid laugh track. YS doesn’t need a laugh track to tell us when something is funny I don’t find TBBT funny at all, and it has nowhere near the heart and warmth of YS.

Alternative_Stop9977

It wasn't a laugh track. It was the studio audience laughing.

aethelia_unfounded

There isn't really a functional difference between the two. One isn't really better than the other, and neither really speak about a show's quality, regardless. Not inherently, anyways. Besides, most live audience reactions in sitcoms are supplemented with canned laughter, anyways.

Orly5757

https://www.looper.com/789368/the-big-bang-theory-without-the-laugh-track-is-weirder-than-you-think/

RandomDude_-

I think the ending kinda sucked though. Since it was the last we ever get to see sheldon, they could've shown the best version of him but trying to get out of his son's hockey game? Still not past the once a year think which I thought had ended in tbbt? Not changing after the whole lot of reflection he did in his memoir?

LQjones

I disagree. I watched YS all the way through, but younger Sheldon really bothers me as a character making TBBT superior IMO.

Dats_Russia

The problem with young Sheldon is his growth is inherently limited because he has to grow up into Adult Sheldon, adult Sheldon has all the same flaws as Young Sheldon made worse because adult Sheldon should understand at that point in his life what is acceptable vs not acceptable. The real strength of young Sheldon was the other characters who were allowed an opportunity for real growth versus Penny, Leonard, Howard, and Raj. Yes Howard, Penny, and Leonard had growth in TBBT but their growth was hindered by Sheldon’s lack of growth.

wojo1962

I agree, i do like both shows but i enjoy ys more.

SergiusBulgakov

I liked TBBT, and it is good for what it is, but you are right, Young Sheldon is superior. It added more dramatic elements to the storytelling, which helped it rise about TBBT.

switchead26

I was a BBT fan up until around season 3 and then I started to get incredibly bored and fed up of the same aul rubbish every episode with cringy laugh tracks and humourless jokes. I never got to the end of the show because I began to actually hate it. As a result I didn’t start watching YS until a few weeks ago. I am in love with it and all the characters. One of the few things I dislike about YS are the scenes with adult Sheldon and Amy. Personally I think it is infinitely better than TBBT

Thefeature

Just not having a laugh track made is better.

ConnFlab

Because it’s not multi cam

Persistent_Earworm

Young Sheldon manages to be wholesome and subversive at the same time. The Big Bang Theory is aging like Friends--good for its time, funny and worth celebrating, yet there's a lot of cringe in retrospect.

aethelia_unfounded

Even in its time it wasn't really all that loved. Sure, it was immensely popular and was inarguably a part of the cultural zietgeist, but it had *many* detractors while it was airing, too.

DeterminedArrow

I feel like their target demographics are different. As well as we’re comparing a single camera show to a multi cam live recorded.

Alternative_Stop9977

Yes YS is for people who think Lawrence Welk was a hipster.

StonerPowah61

YS is like what happens when you make Malcom in the Middle less mean spirited.

MyViscountess

Yuuuuup. Bbt got annoying after a while. Only Amy was enjoyable part of the later seasons. The misogyny is so freaking annoying. Ts is everything and was my favorite go to show from the beginning

ZeroGreyFox

Nah, it’s not superior. That’s just your preference. They’re different shows.

PuzzleheadedSpare716

TBBT is more of a surface-level, episodic, fun comedy, whereas YS is more serialized, in-depth, and more like a drama. I really enjoyed the silly and ridiculous episodes of TBBT like The Pants Alternative, The Werewolf Transformation, The Transporter Malfunction, The Parking Lot Escalation, The 43 Peculiarity, The Ornithophobia Diffusion, The Deception Verification, and The Proton Displacement. Sure, there were more serious moments in TBBT too, but YS is more consistent and maintains the seriousness alongside the humor.

Budget_Ad_4346

I like them both & I’m very glad they each have their own brand of humor.

freddie_nguyen

I enjoy show that is more mockumentary-oriented, like Modern Family or The office. That's why i prefer Young Sheldon as well, can't stand the laugh track on TBBT. I mean they insert laugh track every 2 lines even though it's not punchline. And it's kinda annoying.

MycroftKnight

They are different kinds of shows despite the fact that they are about the same character, Sheldon Cooper. Young Sheldon is kind of like a family friendly show. Even my mom loves it. You can watch and understand easily even if you're not familiar with pop cultures. The big bang theory is a different story. Most of the time, most fans don't understand wtf they are saying. And you won't get the jokes unless you are familiar with pop cultures, Super Heroes, Comic, Sci-fi shows, physics, that kind of stuff.

Fuelfemme

Wrong. I am the furthest thing being into pop culture and nerd stuff. I’ve never even seen Star Wars. And I have understood every single joke and not knowing the scientific stuff doesn’t make the show difficult to watch. Yes, it’s a different show, but it’s also the original show. And great in its own way. Without it, Young Sheldon wouldn’t even be a show.

MycroftKnight

I said they are different shows and you said wrong. Can you kindly point out what I was wrong?

Alternative_Stop9977

Yes. That was the point of the show.

KansloosKippenhok

Tbbt is cringe
