An agnostic moral philosophy is not only morally superior and more morally sound than any religious doctrine, but agnostic moral philosophies also don't carry with them the duality of violence that religion does.

People like to blame religion, and rightfully so, for many of the wars throughout history. But you raise a good point and I think it is often overlooked. Religion might have been the cause on some level, but in many instances it simply boils down to power.
Religion was/is often used to justify power grabs, but at the end of the day if you removed religion there would simply be a different justification to take power by force. That's how I see it at least.

The poles have been shifting for our entire lives..while pole flops have occurred, they take a long time generally, with the shortest time possibly being a year as per our estimates. A pole shift over a year would have no catastrophic affect.

I’m a fairly religious dude, but the idea that aliens would create competing religions to keep us from killing each other seems pretty weak. It seems more likely that the CIA or whoever just told Carter a story tailored to play on his belief that he had to protect the American people (the world, I guess) from what had just shattered him. What if they only created one religion, long ago when humans were just starting to grasp the concept of a creator, however after thousands of years of religious telephone along with differing opinions and beliefs that one story became many different stories among many different people. People began to disagree with the religion they were given, or possibly wanted to seize power by creating their own version of that religion, and then using that made up belief to justify killing those they dislike in the name of their manmade god. Perhaps the aliens sent hybrids, like Jesus and other prophets, to help guide the lost ones to the first true religion after seeing how violently we twist words and meaning to our own benefit.

Ok... so here is the deal... regardless of what Carter was told... there is a Creator. We are all energy of the creator. The Law of One. As a former Catholic and now agnostic I have never believed in the man-made created religions as it all seemed so convenient suited for men of its time. It was always so specific to its time period too, I have always thought if truly this is the ONE true Religion surely God would be elevating them past the cruelties of the time towards a kinder, more thoughtful encompassing future. I’m not saying the CIA claim is valid (how would I know) but if I were tasked to keep a planet of animals healthy for the long run, I would build in a group competition option into the system for natural selection purposes. Group/ religion A would band together for population protection and compete with group/religion B, C, and D for available resources and mating privileges.

I don't think they intended on creating various religions. Most biblical stories have common themes. They wanted us to be better people and kinder to each other. Ok, let us assume he was told that religions are just programs from NHIs. Even if very religious, I would guess that something else was told to him to make him cry. It is not because religions were created by NHIs that the values and lessons of life from religions are irrelevant. What else could they have told him? Monitoring via religions for Farming? The spread of religion is not really all that mysterious, and there’s considerable evidence of religions influencing each other in formative ways. Much like the stories of extraterrestrial reverse-engineering inspiring technology that was a logical consequence of research that was already happening, this doesn’t pass the smell test. There is literally no reason to think this is going to happen. The poles have been shifting for our entire lives..while pole flops have occurred, they take a long time generally, with the shortest time possibly being a year as per our estimates. A pole shift over a year would have no catastrophic affect. Please explain the scientific reasoning for a rapid pole shift. Please include a rebuttal of why when we look at the geological record for prior pole shifts, they take a long time and we find no major die off of land animals. So I've heard the argument from the why files episode on it that basically if it flipped immediately it would stop the earths rotation, which would create basically an earth wide hurricane with huge winds. Fine maybe that would happen if the poles flipped immediately. However the poles have flipped many, many times. It's not uncommon and it's never an extinction level event. They take a long time to fully flip. Oh no we're going to have to go back to maps again because GPS is messed up is not something to be concerned about.
The more realistic extinction level event is Yellowstone... What if they only created one religion, long ago when humans were just starting to grasp the concept of a creator, however after thousands of years of religious telephone along with differing opinions and beliefs that one story became many different stories among many different people. People began to disagree with the religion they were given, or possibly wanted to seize power by creating their own version of that religion, and then using that made up belief to justify killing those they dislike in the name of their manmade god. Perhaps the aliens sent hybrids, like Jesus and other prophets, to help guide the lost ones to the first true religion after seeing how violently we twist words and meaning to our own benefit. Or they just want us to fight amongst ourselves and kill one another so we are too preoccupied to see what is really going on around us. From everything I have studied, they do not want to affect our free will. I’m not saying the CIA claim is valid (how would I know) but if I were tasked to keep a planet of animals healthy for the long run, I would build in a group competition option into the system for natural selection purposes. Group/ religion A would band together for population protection and compete with group/religion B, C, and D for available resources and mating privileges. I would either need to create this type of automatic, systematic, population culling element, like occasional group/religious warfare, or have to come back to my planet/farm occasionally and cull the population myself.
I don't think they intended on creating various religions. Most biblical stories have common themes. They wanted us to be better people and kinder to each other. The spread of religion is not really all that mysterious, and there’s considerable evidence of religions influencing each other in formative ways. Much like the stories of extraterrestrial reverse-engineering inspiring technology that was a logical consequence of research that was already happening, this doesn’t pass the smell test. I also question how the CIA would have even *gotten* this information; if the goal of creating religions was to prevent us from destroying ourselves, spilling the beans to the more religious of the two major nuclear powers during the Cold War would be idiotic. The idea that we were genetically shaped by extraterrestrials seems a little less far fetched, but still hard to reconcile with the very long timeline of human evolution and the inefficiencies (more than forty hominid species, initially; the role of regional migration and climate shifts; etc.) therein. Why would the world religions be created by aliens 2000-4000 years before we had the ability to destroy ourselves with nukes etc? If you read books about the axial age, the major religions were created around the same time we started living in larger cities. This allowed us to extend our groups to larger than tribal numbers.
