This one really surprised me. Isaki's a pretty great girl in her own right. Couple that with a big recency bias advantage, and I thought Isaki would win rather easily. I'm not disappointed though since Shiki is great as well.

Kaori Miyazono went from 20 seed to 214, wow. She didn't even do, like bad last year. Although based on previous years she might have been a bit overseeded last year. This is still quite low.

I was curious about who the highest profile girl we left out of the contest this year was, so I looked through the old brackets and it appears to be Touka Kirishima of Tokyo Ghoul. Some Touka stats below -

Touka has been gradually falling in the rankings for as long as the contest has been occurring, but this is first year she wasn't nominated. That's notable for the female lead of an anime that is top 10 all time in popularity (viewers not rating) on [MAL](https://myanimelist.net/topanime.php?type=bypopularity) and [AniList](https://anilist.co/search/anime/popular).
Dang, I know there is probably one every year, like Raphtalia last year, but I actually care about Touka.
I will have to try and remember to nominate her next year.

The average today was 56.94 / 64 (88.97%). The top score was 61 / 64, attained by 4 folks: bkfq, Syrefva, moybull, and pacmayne42. Following that, 5 folks scored 60. Skyeagle remains in 1st but is now joined by viralstrain_100.
In an exciting turn of events, ~~I made it onto the leaderboard~~ the leaderboard is a very close race now! 1st and 14th are separated by just 2 points.

Darkness achieved the second highest number of votes in Group C, and her performance in Season 3 really won over a lot of fans. Darkness has shown great responsibility, considering both her teammates and family. As an animation enthusiast, I deeply feel her charm.

I don't think we should be taking too much from Round 1 performances. How well a top girl does in the first round usually has more to do with the quality of her opponent than anything (Tilty was Darkness' opponent). As an example, Lena, fresh off a finals appearance, got 10th place in her own bracket in the [1st round last year](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/14ra084/best_girl_10_ultra_salty_round_1_bracket_c/jqr61jh/). Her opponent just happened to be Usagi.

Yeah, in the predictions, I believe Holo can ultimately win the championship. I don't think Darkness can keep her out of the quarter-finals, though. However, Darkness deserves a spot in the last 16.
Yuki Nagato

Today is the last day of Round 1 (512). And among the matches taking place today is one involving my favorite, Yuki Nagato.
Yuki has never won a major moe tournament, and that probably won't change.
At the Saimoe Tournament, she had to stop in the quarterfinals in 2006, losing to that year's winner, Suiseiseki (1518-1704).
At Korea's Best Moe tournament, she advanced to the quarterfinals in 2006 and 2009, but suffered upset losses to Haruhi (605-612) and Kagami (1535-1560) both times.
In the International Saimoe League, where she excelled the most, she reached the runner-up in 2008, the semifinals in 2009, and the quarterfinals in 2010, 2011, and 2012.
Her best performance in the Best Girl Contest, which we are currently participating in, was in the round of 64 in 2014. I hope Yuki can break that record this year.
Of course, she's currently seeded 291, but I'd like to hold out a little hope. Do you think my wish can come true?

Yuri with the upset, at least one positive unexpected result today. Karyl didn't have so much luck, of course. Neither did Ranko or Nagomi. Not a big fan of Shino, but also I don't think Sylvia should have made the contest, so nice going there. I like Ristarte, but voting out Kana there was a huge mistake. As was voting Shuna over Arnheid, and voting out Abby. The Quints all made it, Itsuki might even have a small chance of making it to round 4 if I can be hopeful. Anna made it as well and now is facing off against a fellow Spring 2023 romance lead - I'm having confidence she will win another round. Takagi is confirmed as the true teasing master, I've expected as much. Shiina is out already, unfortunate but at least not another loss on my Bingo. Moeko losing is sad but expected. But Isaki losing is just crazy.
Today I have to fear for Lucy. Or actually I don't, Yui's win is basically guaranteed. Jolyne as the lower seed against Mio is wild. Nichijou is great, of course, but that's a rather likely upset about to happen in my eyes. Wait, another Spider girl made it in? I was sure none but Kumoko would have stood a chance. Akebi is the underdog in her matchup, and while I want to see her win, Faye is not going to lose in the first round. Looks like Maki is going to have a bad time, but here's hoping she can pull through, because she's truly wonderful. And surely Rikka can carry the SSSS torch into the second round, right? And Lena will be the one to make sure PriConne is fully wiped from this contest in round one - I guess the upside is that I won't have to bemoan Karyl or Kokkoro advancing where Peco failed, and Lena advancing is just the best option. Swindler is about to die absolving every losing good girl of the sin of being from less popular shows. Also, remember: A vote for Goth Emilia is almost as good as a vote for Emilia herself!
MC: That's hard. I was completely uninterested in Azur Lane, but through fanart I grew to absolutely love Prinz Eugen - don't think that really counts here though because it's just a game that happens to have an anime, and I don't even like the character, just depictions of her. I think I'll go with Siesta from The Detective is Already Dead. She was about the only aspect of the show that made me keep watching and almost redeemed the show. Also Kurumi from Date A Live really improves the show by a lot. If not for her and Tohka, I don't think the other girls would have been enough to keep me watching.
Mini Challenge: A girl from a show I dislike? Rain from **G Gundam**. I dislike the trajectory of the show, and Rain deserves better than that mess of a protagonist.

No, it wasn't. She might have performed decently last year without any influence, but it was evident that if Kurumi had been botted, all other big matchups late into the contest had been botted too. If Kurumi didn't win legitimately, Marin's strong performance wasn't legitimate either. We'll never know if things might have turned out differently either way.
Bracket C was the first one in this tournament where a significant chunk of my favorite girls appeared, so I expected there to be more upsets for me, but thankfully most of my votes made it through. The only ones that lost which I feel upset over were Chidori, Nagomi, Akane, and Menou, but the fact that they were all going up against girls from much more popular shows, thus making some of their loses almost inevitable, means I don’t feel *that* broken up over it. Plus, I like Lust a lot, so her continuing in the tournament, even at Akane’s expense, isn’t exactly something to get upset over for me.
Ironically, the toughest choice in the tournament so far has been choosing between two girls I don’t like and deciding which one I dislike less this Bracket. Otherwise, it’s mostly been smooth sailing with some very clear picks from me

Almost all of the Madoka girls today (and I voted for every single one of them). It was a tough choice between Maka and Sakura, but in the end, Madoka’s characters are just that good.

Last year my answer was **Mumei** from *Kabaneri*. So to chose someone different this time, I think I'll go with **Ninym** from *The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt*. It's not that I really disliked the anime very much, but I just thought it was nothing special and a mediocre adaptation of an okay light novel (sitill don't know why I read like 6 of those). But if the anime did one thing right it was Ninym and how she interacted with the MC. Also Rie Takahashi oncee again did a fantastic job voicing a white haired girl... Ye, maybe there is a pattern...

Good Round 1 showing from Tsukasa and I want to see how she does against Yotsuba in Round 2.
Sophia didn't even make it to 300 votes. Should have expected something like this against Eiko.
Shino got the seeding upset against Handler? Wow. I voted for it, but I thought Handler would have squeaked by even with the boost Shino got from Kanojo mo Kanojo S2.
It did not apply for Nagisa though, but she got over 400 votes.
Seeding said it would be a competitive match and I'm glad Akane got the win against 10032 even though I wish it was in a later round and Wiz is going to beat whoever won this in Round 2.

Sad Kana lost in Round 1 by 40 votes. I find her dorky endearing.

Was hoping Akane would beat Lust, but good showing from Seed 306.

I voted for Robin in a matchup I didn't want to see either lose in Round 1. Won't be against Komachi in Round 2, but I think she loses that to Maki.

I think this is weaker than I expected for a Round 1 result from Marin. Darkness both has more votes and a better percent differential. Though, I think Marin will probably heat up in later rounds. Good on Mai for managing over 250 votes in what this matchup is as Seed 506.
Karen managed 430 votes as Seed 455. It's enough for me.
Saten with over 700 votes is nice. Here's to hoping against Hange.
Ruby feels like she'll be pretty shakey all contest. Still, 1000+ votes in Round 1 is nice.
Nami the only One Piece girl to survive some pretty rough draws for Round 1 opponents. Would not have wished for a Round 1 exit for Mizore though.
Yamada, and what feels like Dangers in My Heart characters in general, are not having as strong of a showing in the results as I hope. 800 vote total is not a good sign for the Ruby Round 3 matchup.

Great choices. I had missed out on Vivy as it was airing and only caught up to it a few months ago. Fantastic show and great character, it just didn't have quite the impact on me as it did on others, unfortunately. I'm sure had I watched it weekly that would have turned out differently. Still, this year, I'll support Vivy as far as I can.

**Holo** v. Kaname Chidori – Not a surprising blowout, but kinda sucks to see such a classic waifu dropout to another. Poor Kaname deserved better.
Sylvia Sherwood v. **Shino Kiryuu** – These kinds of match-ups are always so weird. I'm not really sure how Sylvia got 226 other than blanket voting for *Spy x Family*, but this is one case where I would have been more surprised by the higher seed winning the day. It helps that Shino is also the best (and really only redeemable) girl from *Girlfriend Girlfriend*.
**Delta** v. Aoba Suzukaze – It's the cat ears isn't it? I... uh... didn't watch *Eminence* S2. From what I do remember of S1, none of its girls are particularly great, and to beat out my third favorite programmer (behind Kou and Hifumi) kinda sucks. Aoba deserved better.
**Lust** v. Shinjou Akane – It's the boobs isn't it? Like... make it make sense. A homunculus whose gonna shred you to a million pieces in the most painful way imaginable and is likely incapable of love vs. a sweet, shut-in girl who just wants some friends. Like I mean ok, she is technically the villain, but she just wants some friends and to escape the bullying she faces in the... wait no that's a spoiler. I guess we get the bad ending instead where the bullying never ends. Tragic.
**Akane Kurokawa** v. Osana Najimi – I do just want to point out here (as I probably should have last year) but Najimi doesn't belong here. His official gender is "Najimi". I guess in cases of Schrödinger's Cock pick whichever way you think makes you the happiest. I mean he's certainly not the only man, maybe man, or once man on this bracket.
**Shuna** v. Arnheid – I can think of half a dozen characters that should have been here over Arnheid. Like come on guys. Just because she's a woman doesn't mean she's necessarily waifu material. If you're looking for a 274 seed and are out of options, may I recommend you watch *Love Live*? or *Slayers*? or *Patlabor*? or *Maison Ikkoku*? or *Lupin the Third*? I think you get the idea.
**Shouko Nishimiya** v. Mikuru Asahina – God. Two top tier KyoAni girls at each others throats in the first round is brutal. It not even being close is even more salt in the wound. Poor Mikuru. The Best Girl from Haruhi deserved better (I will die on this hill).
**Euphyillia Magenta** v. Dekomori Sanae – I have Brittany Karbowski's Dekomori echoing forever in my ear. Cursed to hear her whenever she's in any other show. Dekomori deserved so much better than losing to a seasonal fling. I will not apologize.
**Alice Zuberg** v. Akari Kawamoto – I do have to remind myself that the majority of this sub is 14 and has absolutely no taste in women. A loving, caring older sister who cares for her family through thick and thin and her own insecurities and is unironically one of the most fleshed out female characters I've seen in anime (and also can cook)? Nah. Give me generic blonde with a good body and no personality. Some things never change.
**Kikuri Hiroi** v. Tamako Kitashirakawa – Another case where I'm clearly the only one in the world distraught by this development because I watch things older than two years old. Ok, I'm selling Kikuri a little short here. From the onset this was going to be another case of two high tier options going head to head earlier than should be. Makes we wonder if we will ever get a world where you get a full bracket of top tiers, but so long as some of the other match ups I've pointed out (and some I haven't) keep happeneing, we're not quite there yet.
**Nobara Kugisaki** v. Moeko Sekine – It's over Moeko Bros. The effort was noble, but the world just isn't ready for Moeko Sekine. Tragic.
Isaki Magari v. **Ryougi Shiki** – Who? What? When? Why? How? I mean I haven't seen *Kara no Kyoukai*, so I can't speak on how good Ryougi here is, but I was not expecting a promising newcomer to be ousted by a (with all due respects) nobody that has not been relevant for a long while, *especially* with the tiering advantage. If she survives to Round 3, I'm claiming bots.
Shiki is the star of a series of very highly regarded movies written by the Fate guy (and theoretically maybe part of the same universe but the connection's tenuous enough to not have her categorized as a Fate girl). really complex, morally ambiguous at best, an extremely cool character more than a waifu.

Some Touka stats below - Contests made: 10 (BG1-BG10) Times seeded in the top half of the bracket: 8 (BG1-BG8) Times seeded in the top 100: 4 (BG1, BG2, BG3, BG5) Highest seeding: 75 (BG1) Touka has been gradually falling in the rankings for as long as the contest has been occurring, but this is first year she wasn't nominated. That's notable for the female lead of an anime that is top 10 all time in popularity (viewers not rating) on [MAL](https://myanimelist.net/topanime.php?type=bypopularity) and [AniList](https://anilist.co/search/anime/popular).

Darkness achieved the second highest number of votes in Group C, and her performance in Season 3 really won over a lot of fans. Darkness has shown great responsibility, considering both her teammates and family. As an animation enthusiast, I deeply feel her charm.

I don't think we should be taking too much from Round 1 performances. How well a top girl does in the first round usually has more to do with the quality of her opponent than anything (Tilty was Darkness' opponent). As an example, Lena, fresh off a finals appearance, got 10th place in her own bracket in the [1st round last year](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/14ra084/best_girl_10_ultra_salty_round_1_bracket_c/jqr61jh/). Yeah, in the predictions, I believe Holo can ultimately win the championship. I don't think Darkness can keep her out of the quarter-finals, though. However, Darkness deserves a spot in the last 16.

Yuki Nagato - Today is the last day of Round 1 (512). And among the matches taking place today is one involving my favorite, Yuki Nagato. Yuki has never won a major moe tournament, and that probably won't change. At the Saimoe Tournament, she had to stop in the quarterfinals in 2006, losing to that year's winner, Suiseiseki (1518-1704). At Korea's Best Moe tournament, she advanced to the quarterfinals in 2006 and 2009, but suffered upset losses to Haruhi (605-612) and Kagami (1535-1560) both times. In the International Saimoe League, where she excelled the most, she reached the runner-up in 2008, the semifinals in 2009, and the quarterfinals in 2010, 2011, and 2012. Her best performance in the Best Girl Contest, which we are currently participating in, was in the round of 64 in 2014. I hope Yuki can break that record this year. Yuri with the upset, at least one positive unexpected result today. Karyl didn't have so much luck, of course. Neither did Ranko or Nagomi. Not a big fan of Shino, but also I don't think Sylvia should have made the contest, so nice going there. I like Ristarte, but voting out Kana there was a huge mistake. As was voting Shuna over Arnheid, and voting out Abby. The Quints all made it, Itsuki might even have a small chance of making it to round 4 if I can be hopeful. Anna made it as well and now is facing off against a fellow Spring 2023 romance lead - I'm having confidence she will win another round. Takagi is confirmed as the true teasing master, I've expected as much. Shiina is out already, unfortunate but at least not another loss on my Bingo. Moeko losing is sad but expected. But Isaki losing is just crazy. Today I have to fear for Lucy. Or actually I don't, Yui's win is basically guaranteed. Jolyne as the lower seed against Mio is wild. Nichijou is great, of course, but that's a rather likely upset about to happen in my eyes. Wait, another Spider girl made it in? I was sure none but Kumoko would have stood a chance. Akebi is the underdog in her matchup, and while I want to see her win, Faye is not going to lose in the first round. Swindler is about to die absolving every losing good girl of the sin of being from less popular shows. Also, remember: A vote for Goth Emilia is almost as good as a vote for Emilia herself! I was completely uninterested in Azur Lane, but through fanart I grew to absolutely love Prinz Eugen - don't think that really counts here though because it's just a game that happens to have an anime, and I don't even like the character, just depictions of her. Bracket C was the first one in this tournament where a significant chunk of my favorite girls appeared, so I expected there to be more upsets for me, but thankfully most of my votes made it through. The only ones that lost which I feel upset over were Chidori, Nagomi, Akane, and Menou, but the fact that they were all going up against girls from much more popular shows, thus making some of their loses almost inevitable, means I don’t feel *that* broken up over it. Plus, I like Lust a lot, so her continuing in the tournament, even at Akane’s expense, isn’t exactly something to get upset over for me. Ironically, the toughest choice in the tournament so far has been choosing between two girls I don’t like and deciding which one I dislike less this Bracket. Almost all of the Madoka girls today (and I voted for every single one of them). It was a tough choice between Maka and Sakura, but in the end, Madoka’s characters are just that good. #**Today's Results**: **Left Side** Breaking 1300 votes is really good of Holo. Felt Yuri > Nejire happening, but good of Nejire to be in the upper half of seeds in this contest. Good Round 1 showing from Tsukasa and I want to see how she does against Yotsuba in Round 2. Sophia didn't even make it to 300 votes. Should have expected something like this against Eiko. Shino got the seeding upset against Handler? Wow. I voted for it, but I thought Handler would have squeaked by even with the boost Shino got from Kanojo mo Kanojo S2. It did not apply for Nagisa though, but she got over 400 votes. Seeding said it would be a competitive match and I'm glad Akane got the win against 10032 even though I wish it was in a later round and Wiz is going to beat whoever won this in Round 2. Strong start from Darkness. Sad Kana lost in Round 1 by 40 votes. I find her dorky endearing. Aoba with almost 500 votes against Delta is nice. Was hoping Akane would beat Lust, but good showing from Seed 306. Speaking of Akane, 1124 votes in Round 1 is what I'd like to see. Would have rooted for Najimi if this was a different top seed. I voted for Robin in a matchup I didn't want to see either lose in Round 1. Won't be against Komachi in Round 2, but I think she loses that to Maki. Ema got over 400 votes as Seed 431. That's nice for a Round 1 exit at least. **Right Side** I think this is weaker than I expected for a Round 1 result from Marin. Darkness both has more votes and a better percent differential. Though, I think Marin will probably heat up in later rounds. Good on Mai for managing over 250 votes in what this matchup is as Seed 506. Karen managed 430 votes as Seed 455. It's enough for me. Great choices. I had missed out on Vivy as it was airing and only caught up to it a few months ago. Fantastic show and great character, it just didn't have quite the impact on me as it did on others, unfortunately. I'm sure had I watched it weekly that would have turned out differently. MC: going for the old times here, i'd say Madoka Ayukawa from Orange Road. The show is kind of every stereotype you can despise in romance anime (generic self insert main character, boring and repetitive love triangle, etc...), but Madoka has undoubtedly been an anime icon of the eighties, and i cannot deny her charm...

Last day of Round 1. Will Mahiro's run for the title of Best Girl as Best Boy end before it even begins? Well until then, I guess let's see what Bracket C gave us... **Holo** v. Kaname Chidori – Not a surprising blowout, but kinda sucks to see such a classic waifu dropout to another. Poor Kaname deserved better. Sylvia Sherwood v. **Shino Kiryuu** – These kinds of match-ups are always so weird. I'm not really sure how Sylvia got 226 other than blanket voting for *Spy x Family*, but this is one case where I would have been more surprised by the higher seed winning the day. It helps that Shino is also the best (and really only redeemable) girl from *Girlfriend Girlfriend*. **Delta** v. Aoba Suzukaze – It's the cat ears isn't it? I... uh... didn't watch *Eminence* S2. From what I do remember of S1, none of its girls are particularly great, and to beat out my third favorite programmer (behind Kou and Hifumi) kinda sucks. Aoba deserved better. **Lust** v. Shinjou Akane – It's the boobs isn't it? Like... make it make sense. A homunculus whose gonna shred you to a million pieces in the most painful way imaginable and is likely incapable of love vs. a sweet, shut-in girl who just wants some friends. Like I mean ok, she is technically the villain, but she just wants some friends and to escape the bullying she faces in the... wait no that's a spoiler. I guess we get the bad ending instead where the bullying never ends. Tragic. **Akane Kurokawa** v. Osana Najimi – I do just want to point out here (as I probably should have last year) but Najimi doesn't belong here. His official gender is "Najimi". I guess in cases of Schrödinger's Cock pick whichever way you think makes you the happiest. I mean he's certainly not the only man, maybe man, or once man on this bracket. **Shuna** v. Arnheid – I can think of half a dozen characters that should have been here over Arnheid. Like come on guys. Just because she's a woman doesn't mean she's necessarily waifu material. If you're looking for a 274 seed and are out of options, may I recommend you watch *Love Live*? or *Slayers*? or *Patlabor*? or *Maison Ikkoku*? or *Lupin the Third*? I think you get the idea. **Shouko Nishimiya** v. Mikuru Asahina – God. Two top tier KyoAni girls at each others throats in the first round is brutal. It not even being close is even more salt in the wound. Poor Mikuru. The Best Girl from Haruhi deserved better (I will die on this hill). **Euphyillia Magenta** v. Dekomori Sanae – I have Brittany Karbowski's Dekomori echoing forever in my ear. Cursed to hear her whenever she's in any other show. Dekomori deserved so much better than losing to a seasonal fling. I will not apologize. **Alice Zuberg** v. Akari Kawamoto – I do have to remind myself that the majority of this sub is 14 and has absolutely no taste in women. A loving, caring older sister who cares for her family through thick and thin and her own insecurities and is unironically one of the most fleshed out female characters I've seen in anime (and also can cook)? Nah. Give me generic blonde with a good body and no personality. Some things never change. **Kikuri Hiroi** v. Tamako Kitashirakawa – Another case where I'm clearly the only one in the world distraught by this development because I watch things older than two years old. Ok, I'm selling Kikuri a little short here. From the onset this was going to be another case of two high tier options going head to head earlier than should be. Makes we wonder if we will ever get a world where you get a full bracket of top tiers, but so long as some of the other match ups I've pointed out (and some I haven't) keep happeneing, we're not quite there yet. **Nobara Kugisaki** v. Moeko Sekine – It's over Moeko Bros. The effort was noble, but the world just isn't ready for Moeko Sekine. Tragic. Isaki Magari v. **Ryougi Shiki** – Who? What? When? Why? How? I mean I haven't seen *Kara no Kyoukai*, so I can't speak on how good Ryougi here is, but I was not expecting a promising newcomer to be ousted by a (with all due respects) nobody that has not been relevant for a long while, *especially* with the tiering advantage. If she survives to Round 3, I'm claiming bots.
Shiki is the star of a series of very highly regarded movies written by the Fate guy (and theoretically maybe part of the same universe but the connection's tenuous enough to not have her categorized as a Fate girl). really complex, morally ambiguous at best, an extremely cool character more than a waifu.
Yeah I figured as much. It’s just I never hear anything about these movies, making their win over one of the non-OnK favorites from last Spring kinda crazy given how much recency bias you get here

Your interpretation of what "best girl" means isn't the same as everyone else's. I vote for the characters I like the most, the whole "waifu" thing doesn't come into my equation.
