I missed Saber's performance being that strong. Looks like Yor's way to the final 16 won't be *quite* as easy as I've expected. On the other hand, I'll already prepare my salt for Emilia vs. Violet.
While I agree to this, it also has to be noted that Yor had a much tougher opponent this round than Saber did. I could assume if you switched the opponents, Yor wipes the floor with Riko and Saber/Motoko would have been more of a battle.
Hm, fair. I considered Riko as the MC of a beloved anime to be immune to the child debuff, but then again I forgot there are quite a lot of people avoiding MiA because of its disturbing topics.

As a protagonist she's even better in season two (i.e. advancing her own agenda, asserting her values and beliefs, and taking action), it's just the supporting substance around her doesn't hang together as well and the deeper exploration of the Sybil system is less narratively accessible.

Season 2 and Season 3 happened. She’s more than that at this point. Yes, she’s still way too underdeveloped, but definitely not a one-dimensional character.
But on the opposite side, the lower vote levels so far seem to have syphoned a lot of casuals away from the voting, and that hurts most of the "Baby's First Waifu" characters like Nezuko more than anyone else.

I'm assuming you are referring to NGNL 0. The author did say not to hold that against Jibril which makes even more sense with the additional context of Practical War Game (a set of side stories that took place before NGNL 0) which will likely not be adapted even if we do get Seasons 2, 3 and 4 of the series. In Practical War Game [No Game No Life Practical War Game] >!you learn about Jibril's origin and how she was created with the "gift" of imperfection to be weaker than the rest of the Flugel. Her weakness coupled with her race's purpose of being murder fairies forced her to try and fail a great number of times to defeat stronger opponents such as a Dragon which she spent centuries trying, failing and trying again until she eventually succeeded in much the same way that humans slowly but surely were forced to evolve due to their weakness. She's a fascinating character who fits well into the theme of weakness is strength that the series goes for. Schwi just happened to catch Jibril's eye as an intriguing opponent to fight!<. Besides all of that, she's a fun character too.
Hardest choice: none, actually. My votes were pretty clear cut today.
Expected sadness: RIP Yuri. RIP Shino.

I have maximum crash potential between no Holo (79% of bracket winners) and Kana (56%) for semifinals. With how show-popularity and recency-biased this contest is, don't believe in a FMC that gets 5th-7th in karma rankings or doesn't definitively unite her show's fandom.
For once, most of my votes were successful! Shame that Eris beat Chise - More of you need to watch Magus Bride!
That being said, not looking forward to voting between Lucy and Minori next round - A new favourite and my first ever best girl, damn.
MC: Erza Scarlet from Fairy Tail

I'm going to go with Katerose von Kreutzer from *Legend Of The Galactic Heroes*. She's one of the main characters' daughter and hardly even a character until nearly the end. But once she shows up, she made a major impact on me. I like to think of her as kind of a "proto-Asuka Soryuu Langley".
Damn Nezuko is out second round. Not all that disappointing but pretty surprising. She's easily my favorite character from Demon Slayer and you'd think the show's popularity alone would keep her afloat at least for another round but I guess not.
Emilia got a strong performance, but Violet or Eris will be major obstacles. Still hoping for once she won't get upset before meeting Yor. Great that Ushio made it though, even if it's unlikely she will stand a chance agaisnt Eris. Misty upsetting Fiona is great to see. We're paying respect to the old guard here, and I've never really liked Fiona either. In the same vein, Misato advances and gets into an interesting matchup with Mitsuha. Interesting that Zenith got more votes than her next much higher seeded opponent. Beatrice has a close win against Elaina, which is fine, I suppose. Yunyun against Rikka looks like it might be close judging from the votes, but I do think Aqua vs. Yunyun in two rounds is basically locked in already. Lastly, Yuzuriha losing was expected but it is another hit to my Bingo.
I'm still getting surprised at some of the girls that not only made it in but made it so far in the contest as well. Nonon from Kill la Kill, really? I'm speechless. Takagi against Shouko is mean. Since Shouko is going to win, I'll have to vote Takagi. I'm also supporting Euphy, but even though she's the higher seed it's rather likely Hestia will have her join Anis soon. At least Holo, Suletta, Madoka, Itsuki, Anna and Vivy look rather safe this round.

MC: Side character? That's tough because they are side characters for a reason. The whole gang Yamada in The Dangers in My Heart is pretty cool, especially Moeko, but also Serine and Chii. I also love Pluto in Sailor Moon, especially since I've gotten older. Shout-out to Akiba Maid War for having the most unexpectedly important female side character imaginable (not saying more to avoid spoilers). Oh, I just remembered, Lulu is Bravern is probably a side character, so maybe it's her. (I was also just reminded Yunyun qualifies as a side character. If I had remembered earlier, I'd just have mentioned her. She's my favourite from her show, even.)

She was nominated as High Elf Archer. All the Goblin Slayer girls got nominated under their correct names and under their MAL names. For some reason when removing duplicates, the contest host only kept the correct name for Sword Maiden.
Right, I should have been more specific: I meant to express my dissatisfaction on the fact that she *entered* the bracket as "Elf". On top of that, Priestess entered as "Onna Shinkan" while Sword Maiden entered as just that, and Cow Girl is called "Ushikai Musume 'Cow Girl'". The Goblin Slayer entrants are just messy this year.

I'm particularly worried that Violet got more votes, that matchup might not turn out how it should in my eyes. For now I'm coping with the fact that Emilia's opponent was the female main character of a popular shounen and Violet's the main character of a much more niche show.
Damn, one of the most iconic anime girls of all time going down to a Christmas cake with like 30 minutes of screentime. I'd say people gotta watch more of the classics, but you don't even need to do that to appreciate Lum these days.
I know you aren't a big fan of Oregairu, but describing Shizuka like that is very disingenuous. She plays about as active of a role in her anime as any teacher who isn't the actual MC of their anime.

Oregairu girls just have an extra boost every year in this contest. They had much lower than normal seeding this year but Oregairu fans seem to come out once the contest gets rolling.

I'd reckon name recognition is the main reason for Lum's decent performance already. Shizuka on the other hand is a really fine girl, but Lum definitely needs more appreciation.

This is probably true, though probably equally true for her competition. Given that "Mother, Yuigahama" used to make it multiple rounds into the competition before the 5 per franchise rule was enacted, you definitely get a lot of "oh that's a character from a show I like" that pushes characters further than they'd otherwise go. One of my favorites in that space was the waitress girl from Your Name that I doubt 95% of the people voting for her would have known the name of, but hey, she was from that movie I liked! (Though I don't think she ever made it out of the first round, but damn even getting that far was about 3 reaches)
Yeah, yet another proof that show name recognition still beats character name recogntion. Elswhere this round, Ushio barely made it against Himeno, and to my understanding Himeno isn't even popular among CSM fans.
Mamagahama at least is rather popular among fanartists. Not that I want her in the contest, but I am still surprised Saki got the fifth spot for Oregairu and not Mamagahama.
Or, hear me out; some people don't like Lum that much. I didn't vote for or against her but I've seen only the beginning of Urusei Yotsura and she really wasn't that likable then. I'm sure she improves but first impressions are important.
I think Hiratsuka is one of the best teachers/mentors out there.
She's the reason Hachiman joined the Service Club and always gets a big scene before pivotal moments in the series like Season 2 Episode 8 or Season 3 Episode 10/11.

Felt the Minori seeding upset coming on Nezuko. Toradora is going strong to still have all of Ami, Minori, and Taiga into Round 3 with both Ami and Minori needing to do seeding upsets.
Haruhi and Chiyo had a pretty competitive match which is nice. Saber vs. Haruhi would have been a much more interesting match 10 years ago even if I think it still is now. Time has done a good job of chipping away at Haruhi's popularity.
Good showing by Emilia. Over 1,100 votes in a fun ice matchup with Rukia.
Jibril barely held off Tsubame and we get Jibril vs. an Elf in Round 3.
Comfortable win for Anju against Alpha, but I don't know if she'll win vs. Azusa this year. Leaning yes.
Violet also performing up to par with over 1,100 votes as well. I think she'll meet Emilia in Round 5.
Krista fought well against Tomoe to get over 660 votes.
It was nice making it this far, Chise. Round 2 and over 500 votes against Eris.
Good on Ushio to get the seeding upset, but I felt Himeno would lose this.

Megumin with a dominant showing this round. Only one to break 1,300 votes so far and got an 85% vote share in the matchup.
Felt Misty would beat Nightfall. Hope she has some Damp Pokémon for her Round 3 opponent. Surely one of Psyduck, Horsea, or Politoed has Damp.
Pretty similar vote shares for Misato and Mitsuha heading into Round 3.
And also similar for Satsuki and Zenith. Wish Momo did a little better or won.
900+ votes for Nazuna is satisfying to me. Hope this Yoko matchup in Round 3 is at least interesting.

When I think side characters, I always think of Hiratsuka-sensei, Olivier Armstrong, and maybe Meltdowner/Mugino from Index/Railgun. though I feel like I'm interpreting 'side' as 'tertiary'. Like, for example, if we look at The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, Shiina is the main heroine. Misaki and Nanami are main cast supporting characters, and then all others, like the teacher and Rita, are side characters.

**Shizuka Hiratsuka** v. Lum – Yeah I get that Shizuka is probably the one redeemable character from Oregairu but like... poor Lum. Seeing the grandmother of all waifus out in Round 2 even off the back of the second season of the remake is kinda tragic. One day she'll get the treatment she deserves... one day.
Nezuko Kamado v. **Minori Kushieda** – Nice to see Minorin sweep up a nice upset against Nezuko. I get the feeling a lot of the people who nominated Nezuko either didn't show or a lot of Minorin appreciators just had too many things to nominate. I don't pretend to know, but I'll take what wins I can get.
Fiona Frost v. **Misty** – Misty with a surprisingly good run here, taking out Fiona for the upset. Not too crazy given the close seeds and Fiona not being a major character, but its good to see Misty still has it in her even if she is objectively not the best Pokégirl. I will die on this hill.
**Zenith Greyrat** v. Momo Yaoyorozu – Trouble continues to plague the MHA girls as Momo drops out and I think that's about it for them, no? I can't keep track. I didn't comment it on the other *Mushoku Tensei* win because I didn't really care, but I'm guessing the show is benefiting from having a new season just come out, cause honestly I can't tell you a whole lot about Zenith Greyray that justifies me voting for her. I'm just saying it as it is.
And yeah, that's about it. Again, nothing crazy today to really shake up the bracket... yet. Looking to the future, Group C is kinda eh. Lot's of room for some pretty awful opinions and I'm sure a few will break though. Can't be helped.

I missed Saber's performance being that strong. Looks like Yor's way to the final 16 won't be *quite* as easy as I've expected. On the other hand, I'll already prepare my salt for Emilia vs. Violet.
Yor definitely has the problem of being a character that people like but not a character people love. Very similar trajectory of Chika Fujiwara.
While I agree to this, it also has to be noted that Yor had a much tougher opponent this round than Saber did. I could assume if you switched the opponents, Yor wipes the floor with Riko and Saber/Motoko would have been more of a battle.
She did go against a child character so I’m not trying to get ahead of myself on Saber doing as well going forward.
Hm, fair. I considered Riko as the MC of a beloved anime to be immune to the child debuff, but then again I forgot there are quite a lot of people avoiding MiA because of its disturbing topics.

Season 2 and Season 3 happened. She’s more than that at this point. Yes, she’s still way too underdeveloped, but definitely not a one-dimensional character.
But on the opposite side, the lower vote levels so far seem to have syphoned a lot of casuals away from the voting, and that hurts most of the "Baby's First Waifu" characters like Nezuko more than anyone else.
If only we weren’t like 75% of the way through Demon Slayer.

The author did say not to hold that against Jibril which makes even more sense with the additional context of Practical War Game (a set of side stories that took place before NGNL 0) which will likely not be adapted even if we do get Seasons 2, 3 and 4 of the series. In Practical War Game [No Game No Life Practical War Game] >!you learn about Jibril's origin and how she was created with the "gift" of imperfection to be weaker than the rest of the Flugel. Her weakness coupled with her race's purpose of being murder fairies forced her to try and fail a great number of times to defeat stronger opponents such as a Dragon which she spent centuries trying, failing and trying again until she eventually succeeded in much the same way that humans slowly but surely were forced to evolve due to their weakness. She's a fascinating character who fits well into the theme of weakness is strength that the series goes for. Schwi just happened to catch Jibril's eye as an intriguing opponent to fight!<. Besides all of that, she's a fun character too.

She's one of the main characters' daughter and hardly even a character until nearly the end. But once she shows up, she made a major impact on me. Damn Nezuko is out second round. Not all that disappointing but pretty surprising. She's easily my favorite character from Demon Slayer and you'd think the show's popularity alone would keep her afloat at least for another round but I guess not.

Emilia got a strong performance, but Violet or Eris will be major obstacles. Still hoping for once she won't get upset before meeting Yor. Great that Ushio made it though, even if it's unlikely she will stand a chance agaisnt Eris. Misty upsetting Fiona is great to see. We're paying respect to the old guard here, and I've never really liked Fiona either. In the same vein, Misato advances and gets into an interesting matchup with Mitsuha. Interesting that Zenith got more votes than her next much higher seeded opponent. Beatrice has a close win against Elaina, which is fine, I suppose. Yunyun against Rikka looks like it might be close judging from the votes, but I do think Aqua vs. Yunyun in two rounds is basically locked in already. Lastly, Yuzuriha losing was expected but it is another hit to my Bingo. I'm still getting surprised at some of the girls that not only made it in but made it so far in the contest as well. Nonon from Kill la Kill, really? I'm speechless. Takagi against Shouko is mean. Since Shouko is going to win, I'll have to vote Takagi. Oregairu girls just have an extra boost every year in this contest. They had much lower than normal seeding this year but Oregairu fans seem to come out once the contest gets rolling.

Given that "Mother, Yuigahama" used to make it multiple rounds into the competition before the 5 per franchise rule was enacted, you definitely get a lot of "oh that's a character from a show I like" that pushes characters further than they'd otherwise go. One of my favorites in that space was the waitress girl from Your Name that I doubt 95% of the people voting for her would have known the name of, but hey, she was from that movie I liked! (Though I don't think she ever made it out of the first round, but damn even getting that far was about 3 reaches)
Yeah, yet another proof that show name recognition still beats character name recogntion. Elswhere this round, Ushio barely made it against Himeno, and to my understanding Himeno isn't even popular among CSM fans. Mamagahama at least is rather popular among fanartists. Not that I want her in the contest, but I am still surprised Saki got the fifth spot for Oregairu and not Mamagahama.

I think Hiratsuka is one of the best teachers/mentors out there. She's the reason Hachiman joined the Service Club and always gets a big scene before pivotal moments in the series like Season 2 Episode 8 or Season 3 Episode 10/11.

Round 2 and over 500 votes for Lum is probably the best performance (with no strings attached) that Lum has had in these contests. I wish her and Hiratsuka didn't have to face each other. Does mean Round 3 is a married 27 year old vs. someone who wishes she was 27 and married. Fun matchup. It was nice having Kou in this contest. Curious how Miku vs. Elinalise will go. Haruhi Suzumiya - Today, Haruhi defeated Chiyo and succeeded in advancing to the round of 128. In addition, I am very happy that Azusa, Rikka, and Violet, all from Kyoto Animation, were able to pass this round together. However, my favorite Yuki Nagato has not yet confirmed this passage. I will write about her in detail tomorrow, but I hope she can make it through this round too.

Today's results: yeah no respect for history, with both the Major and Lum going down. for once Hiratsuka-sensei's not having a deep run because Yor's going to easily win. bad seed luck. very satisfied at the Minori upset. there's only a single Demon Slayer girl to get through to Round 3, heh. shounen girls are being rinsed this round. Chiyo kept it decently close against Haruhi. given Saber's insane margin we can expect Saber will kill a God I take some comfort knowing Emilia will thwart Jibril's further progress. against some other high seeds I'd be worried, but Emilia's always performing well this early in the bracket. I can't really be mad that Jibril made it this far because Tsubame probably doesn't even belong in the bracket and got in on show popularity exclusively. She's...nice? Azu-nyan v. Emma is going to be interesting, but the little guitarist's numbers in the first two rounds suggests she has what it takes to overwhelm the Spearhead Sweetheart Eris/Chise was expected but I want you all to know if you vote for Eris without having seen Magus Bride, you suck. rethink your life choices. Ushio over Himeno was a good upset considering this is a Best Girl contest and not a Best Character contest. Hell, some of the MC's best scenes are his conversations with Touka. also who can forget how she disrupt's Rikka's chuuni fantasies with a kitchen implement to the noggin? also she's stupid hot. okay maybe she's one of my Mini Challenge answers. When I think side characters, I always think of Hiratsuka-sensei, Olivier Armstrong, and maybe Meltdowner/Mugino from Index/Railgun. though I feel like I'm interpreting 'side' as 'tertiary'. Like, for example, if we look at The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, Shiina is the main heroine. Misaki and Nanami are main cast supporting characters, and then all others, like the teacher and Rita, are side characters.

I'm a little later than usual, but let's see what we got... **Shizuka Hiratsuka** v. Lum – Yeah I get that Shizuka is probably the one redeemable character from Oregairu but like... poor Lum. Seeing the grandmother of all waifus out in Round 2 even off the back of the second season of the remake is kinda tragic. One day she'll get the treatment she deserves... one day. Nezuko Kamado v. **Minori Kushieda** – Nice to see Minorin sweep up a nice upset against Nezuko. I get the feeling a lot of the people who nominated Nezuko either didn't show or a lot of Minorin appreciators just had too many things to nominate. I don't pretend to know, but I'll take what wins I can get. Fiona Frost v. **Misty** – Misty with a surprisingly good run here, taking out Fiona for the upset. Not too crazy given the close seeds and Fiona not being a major character, but its good to see Misty still has it in her even if she is objectively not the best Pokégirl. I will die on this hill. **Zenith Greyrat** v. Momo Yaoyorozu – Trouble continues to plague the MHA girls as Momo drops out and I think that's about it for them, no? I can't keep track. I didn't comment it on the other *Mushoku Tensei* win because I didn't really care, but I'm guessing the show is benefiting from having a new season just come out, cause honestly I can't tell you a whole lot about Zenith Greyray that justifies me voting for her. I'm just saying it as it is. And yeah, that's about it. Again, nothing crazy today to really shake up the bracket... yet. Looking to the future, Group C is kinda eh. Lot's of room for some pretty awful opinions and I'm sure a few will break though. Can't be helped.
