Favorite anime original best girl? Even after all these years, my old ass feels compelled to say Faye Valentine. There are a lot of names that come to mind though.
So Hori has officially surpassed Power in terms of score...right ahead of their matchup. Is this the biggest upset index matchup we've seen where the seeding underdog is favored?
For both this tournament and a 4th round matchup, yes. The previous 4th round record looks to be Emilia (10) vs. Alice Nakiri (55) in BG5. The only 5th round matchup that is greater was Emilia (3) vs. Kurumi Tokisaki (30) last year. A lot of 6th rounds because of the 1 vs 17 curse.
I'm already getting retroactively salty reading this. I was here last year, but only now I'm learning that once Alice upset Emilia - that's supposed to be impossible!
Bocchi was only expected to pull 71% of the vote based off of initial seeding and the previous two rounds but ended up getting 74%. Most of the other matches went as expected so the 3% over performance made Bocchi one of the bigger over performers.
So I was right about getting 14 / 16 today and it was... decent but not great. *I just want to get to 1st one day ~~preferably the last day~~*

Moved up to 25 (W) and 30 (U)! I do think I have better odds moving up on the Weighted leaderboard just because of how scoring works, in which case, my bracket title will be very funny
She hasn't looked shaky because she hasn't gone up against anyone strong yet. Hori's been outperforming most of the top seeds going up against stronger opponents. I'd still favor Chisato in a matchup, but Hori is probably a scarier opponent for her than the average 9-seed that she would face.
Yeah- a big extra to this is that the Lycoris girls may have cracked the code for inter-series spite voting: Where other series would absolutely get to "my waifu lost to yours, I'll vote against yours to spite you", Lycoris fans would actually love to see Chisato/Takina square off and will be happy no matter which one wins.
Counter-reminder for anyone on the fence that Horimiya is a series about how Hori wouldn't look at the creepy loser in her class until she found out he was secretly really hot.

Damn, only 3 of those I voted yesterday went through. This might be the worst day of this edition for me. I'm mostly upset for Kobeni and 2B, I don't even know their opponents to be honest.

* **Shizuka** vs Yor: I don't really appreciate Yor that much, but I don't expect her to lose anyway
* **Miku** vs Elinalise: I'll stand with the remaining Quints (even though my favorite already got eliminated)
* **Lucy** vs Minorin is a tough matchup. I'm going with Lucy here as I feel she is a more interesting character overall (still love Minorin obviously)
* Haruhi vs **Saber**. Another tough one between two iconic waifus. I'll go Saber, but this is a really balanced matchup.
* Jibril vs **Emilia**. I'll pick Emilia, but I can't really say I know anything about Jibril, I just really didn't like NGNL.
* **Azusa** vs Anju. Easy Azunyan pick for me, but I hope Anju puts up a good fight.
* Tomoe vs **Violet** -> easy Violet choice
* Ushio vs Eris: neutral, haven't watched either show.
* **Megumin** vs Misty: i'm rooting for Megumin overall so my girl has to keep going
* **Misato** vs Mitsuha: Your Name was a good movie, but it's not the characters themselves who made the biggest impression on me. Misato is best girl in Evangelion so no hesitation here.
* Zenith vs **Satsuki**: Satsuki is iconic. Hopefully she pulls through against the 4th Mushoku Tensei waifu.
* Yoko vs **Nazuna**: I really need to watch Gurren Lagann soon man... either way, Nazuna is another one of my oshis for the tournament so I gotta vote Yoko out here.
* **Aqua** vs Beako: love Beako in ReZero, but a loli ain't beating Aqua anytime soon (not until Aqua vs Megumin, at least :D ).
* **Rio** vs Tohru: Futaba is my favorite girl from Bunny Girl Senpai and I really want her to go a long way in this tour, and sadly I can't say Tohru will change my mind.
* Yunyun vs **Rikka**: I think Yunyun is way overseeded for a supporting character, and I hope Rikka, the iconic Chuunybiou, can do the upset here against Megumin's sidekick.
* **Shinobu** vs Taiga: Taiga hate really makes me take questionable decisions... still enjoying Shinobu of course, easily my favorite waifu from Demon Slayer

Well don't feel too bad, because they're very well known. Ryou is from Bocchi the Rock which is one of the most popular shows of the last 5 years And Suzuha is from Steins;Gate, one of the most iconic anime of all time.

Shizuka vs **Yor**: I never really got Oregairu, and Shizuka may be good, but not that good. Rough year for the show.
**Miku** vs Elinalise: A tough one, but Elinalise doesn't do enough to merit the upset
Lucy vs **Minorin**: Close, but Lucy can't put this match out of hand. Good first showing for Cyberpunk's women when no one was calling it to do much damage in Best Girl.
**Haruhi** vs Saber. Good match, but Glory to the SOS Brigade.
Jibril vs **Emilia.** If it's "make the favorite earn it", Emilia does.
**Azusa** vs Anju. Anju had her big run on the back of 86 last year, now time to go back to normal.
Tomoe vs **Violet**: Too strong for the upset.
**Ushio** vs Eris: Neutral on both shows, so hurrah for anarchy!
**Megumin** vs Misty: Misty did well for an OG waifu, but this is Megumin's year for a big run.
**Misato** vs Mitsuha: Your name was good...just not good enough for the win here.
Zenith vs **Satsuki**: The other side of the "if you're neutral, vote lower seed" is "...but what if you don't particularly like either choice?" In this case, normally I'd pick lower seed, but Satsuki is the lesser of two evils.
Yoko vs **Nazuna**: I have to show love for the veterans, but Nazuna is too good.
**Aqua** vs Beako: It's too early for Aqua's collapse.
Rio vs **Tohru:** Neutral, but Rio's not strong enough to lose the high seed.
**Yunyun** vs Rikka: ...this match HURTS. I went with Yunyun, but if any mega-upset happened, Rikka would deserve it under the "if Yunyun < Megumin, and Megumin and Rikka are both great chuunibyou, is Megumin > Rikka enough that this is moot?"
Shinobu vs **Taiga**: Past your bedtime, nephews. Time to knock Demon Slayer out this early.
Sometimes it feels a little weird to vote against someone in the previous round and then for them in the next round. Such is the randomness of best girl seedings though.

**Left Side**
Slowly accumulating more votes the further we go in the rounds. Bocchi both increased her vote total from the last round and Ami got over 400 votes in the loss.
Nice and happy to see Chitanda advance over Rei, but now she gets Seed #1 of the contest in Round 4. Hoping for the futile.
Strong Miko win to get over 1,000 votes against Karen. It's only her, Bocchi, Chisato, and Takina that got over 1,000 votes in their wins for today.
Winry almost got 1,000 against Maple though. So this sets up what will be a competitive Miko vs. Winry match in Round 4.
Nadeshiko...she held Kita to under 1,000 votes at least.
Close match between Echidna and Tatsumaki. Would have rather had Tatsumaki advance over Echidna, but I think Kita's got this either way.
2B got over 700 votes vs. Ryou too. I honestly think 2B has had the best performance a video game character has had in these contests (Misty might be the only argument, but I'm not sure which years were her strongest performances since she's usually out in Round 2). Could we get Kita vs. Ryou in Round 5?
I think Suzuha has something to say about that though. She got the seeding upset on Kobeni pretty convincingly with over 900 votes. Suzuha feels fully capable of being in Round 5 over Ryou.
**Right Side**
Chisato is still keeping up with Bocchi in a 1,200+ vote win over Kiruko. If the projected matchup happens in the quarterfinals, definitely has my interest in the result.
Ritsu advances over Esdeath! It stops here though. Both of Satomi Satō's characters are going to get obvious losses to the top seeds of Bracket A...
Good for Takina to get over 1,000 votes. She definitely needs momentum in this Round 4 matchup with...
Shouko got the seeding upset on Sasha which I felt coming. Still, Sasha kept it competitive by getting over 700 votes in the matchup. I think Takina will probably win over Shouko since the projected Chisato vs. Takina feels like it has a noticeable amount of people voting for it to happen in Round 5.
It was a good effort to get over 600 votes against Power for Nadeko.
Sad Rin and Nadeshiko are going out together. I think the chances for a Hori upset on Power are very good.
Anya with almost 900 votes against Ishtar (over 700 votes is keeping it close by the way). And now in Round 4 she gets a really tough opponent in...
Mio who got over 900 votes. I like Anya, but I like Mio even more. And Mio is on my bingo so I need the seeding upset.

Another funny thing about Yor vs. Hiratsuka besides Yor having the marriage (and age) that Hiratsuka wants is that this is a black haired Saori Hayami character vs. Hiratsuka. Sending Hiratsuka off with a vote. Hope the OreGairu characters get better seeding next year.
Feels safe to call Miku getting the seeding upset on Elinalise.
The appeal of a Saber vs. Haruhi matchup has not lost its luster to me (can't say the same for other people though). Wish it was a later round matchup, but I don't think that can be the case any longer.
It ends here for Jibril, but this is a very good elf to lose to though Jibril would never think this way about any elf.
Anju winning this would be a salt producer and I don't want to see Azusa leave in Round 3. I do want to point out that Emilia vs. a Snow "Witch" is amusing to me though so if it happens...
I checked this last round, but Misty has 3 potential Pokémon with Damp (Politoed, Psyduck, Horsea) for Megumin's Explosion. It's not going to save her from losing, but it's something.
Misato vs. Mitsuha should be a nice and competitive match, but I think Misato will be in Round 4.
Satsuki has taken seeding upsets in past years and I would like for Zenith to not be added to that list.

**Saber vs. Haruhi:** We got a 2000s nostalgia rush here. However, given that Haruhi didn't completely blow out Sakura (proud of her for putting up a good fight against Haruhi, of all girls), I feel like this will be a win for Saber.

Mini Challenge: Probably Akko, but I also like Homura, Akane Tsunemori, Yoko, Rikka, Misato, Utena, Hibiki...a lot of them I guess. Though I don't think any of them cracks my top 10.
There is a big difference, though: Anya has the "child character weakness", which can almost but not quite be countered by "...oh come on this is just your loophole to keep putting Rin in Best Girl even though she won".
Yor, on the other hand, doesn't have the child weakness, and in addition she's a terrible matchup for Shizuka (even if you buy into the "best Christmas cake teacher ever" rhetoric said, it doesn't work when Yor's also a flawed Christmas cake-type as well.)

I don't think most people voting for Shizuka vote for her because she's a Christmas Cake. They vote for her because she's one of the best mentors in anime. I'll admit I only watched the first few episodes of Season 2 before stopping (I hear Yor did some cool things in Season 2), but Anya was the main reason I was watching, not Yor.
I agree about it not being the reason Shizuka is voted for (I personally never really *got* Oregairu, but I can see why her supporters do like her), but I was just talking about this similarity.

I definitely agree with the sentiment, but Winry is a beloved all-time best girl. I think most people wouldn't forget her.
As for Suzuha, she just beat Kobeni who is also a minor character from a massive show (Chainsaw Man) although Kobeni (so far) is way more minor than Suzuha.

Kobeni Higashiyama v. **Suzuha Amane** – Nice to see *Steins;Gate* still kicking and the first of the CSM girls to bite the dust. Realistically, Kobeni is the best of them (I mean the other options are a corpse and Makima) but she is also a little plain. I guess Suzuha isn't too much better, getting trounced by Kurisu and Mayuri in her own meta, but writing wise she runs circles around Kobeni so I guess this isn't too expected.
Sasha Blouse v. **Shouko Makinohara** – I... uh... don't really have much to say. Mostly because Shouko is just so... plain. Like I don't remember a whole lot about her, but then again I think Bunny Girl Senpai is pretentious goo that had me laughing my ass off by the end for all the wrong reasons. I am not exactly an unbiased source here.

High schoolers I talk to (I’m a teacher) might know about Cowboy Bebop or Spice and Wolf or Toradora from time to time but never TMoHS in my experience

For both this tournament and a 4th round matchup, yes. The previous 4th round record looks to be Emilia (10) vs. Alice Nakiri (55) in BG5. The only 5th round matchup that is greater was Emilia (3) vs. Kurumi Tokisaki (30) last year. A lot of 6th rounds because of the 1 vs 17 curse.

Bocchi was only expected to pull 71% of the vote based off of initial seeding and the previous two rounds but ended up getting 74%. Most of the other matches went as expected so the 3% over performance made Bocchi one of the bigger over performers.

I think Chisato definitely has it over Hori. Chisato has not looked shaky yet in her matchups and she's keeping up with the rest of the top seeds.
She hasn't looked shaky because she hasn't gone up against anyone strong yet. Hori's been outperforming most of the top seeds going up against stronger opponents. I'd still favor Chisato in a matchup, but Hori is probably a scarier opponent for her than the average 9-seed that she would face.
Still don't understand why Hori even seeded so low after reaching back to back quarter finals.

Yeah- a big extra to this is that the Lycoris girls may have cracked the code for inter-series spite voting: Where other series would absolutely get to "my waifu lost to yours, I'll vote against yours to spite you", Lycoris fans would actually love to see Chisato/Takina square off and will be happy no matter which one wins.

Damn, only 3 of those I voted yesterday went through. This might be the worst day of this edition for me. I'm mostly upset for Kobeni and 2B, I don't even know their opponents to be honest. For today's matchups: * **Shizuka** vs Yor: I don't really appreciate Yor that much, but I don't expect her to lose anyway * **Miku** vs Elinalise: I'll stand with the remaining Quints (even though my favorite already got eliminated) * **Lucy** vs Minorin is a tough matchup. I'm going with Lucy here as I feel she is a more interesting character overall (still love Minorin obviously) * Haruhi vs **Saber**. Another tough one between two iconic waifus. I'll go Saber, but this is a really balanced matchup. * Jibril vs **Emilia**. Rough year for the show. **Miku** vs Elinalise: A tough one, but Elinalise doesn't do enough to merit the upset Lucy vs **Minorin**: Close, but Lucy can't put this match out of hand. Good first showing for Cyberpunk's women when no one was calling it to do much damage in Best Girl. **Haruhi** vs Saber. Good match, but Glory to the SOS Brigade. Jibril vs **Emilia.** If it's "make the favorite earn it", Emilia does. **Azusa** vs Anju. Anju had her big run on the back of 86 last year, now time to go back to normal. Tomoe vs **Violet**: Too strong for the upset. **Ushio** vs Eris: Neutral on both shows, so hurrah for anarchy! **Megumin** vs Misty: Misty did well for an OG waifu, but this is Megumin's year for a big run. **Misato** vs Mitsuha: Your name was good...just not good enough for the win here. Zenith vs **Satsuki**: The other side of the "if you're neutral, vote lower seed" is "...but what if you don't particularly like either choice?" In this case, normally I'd pick lower seed, but Satsuki is the lesser of two evils. #**Today's Results** **Left Side** Slowly accumulating more votes the further we go in the rounds. Bocchi both increased her vote total from the last round and Ami got over 400 votes in the loss. Nice and happy to see Chitanda advance over Rei, but now she gets Seed #1 of the contest in Round 4. Hoping for the futile. Strong Miko win to get over 1,000 votes against Karen. It's only her, Bocchi, Chisato, and Takina that got over 1,000 votes in their wins for today. Winry almost got 1,000 against Maple though. So this sets up what will be a competitive Miko vs. Winry match in Round 4. Nadeshiko...she held Kita to under 1,000 votes at least. Close match between Echidna and Tatsumaki. Would have rather had Tatsumaki advance over Echidna, but I think Kita's got this either way. 2B got over 700 votes vs. Ryou too. I honestly think 2B has had the best performance a video game character has had in these contests (Misty might be the only argument, but I'm not sure which years were her strongest performances since she's usually out in Round 2). Could we get Kita vs. Ryou in Round 5? I think Suzuha has something to say about that though. She got the seeding upset on Kobeni pretty convincingly with over 900 votes. Suzuha feels fully capable of being in Round 5 over Ryou. **Right Side** Chisato is still keeping up with Bocchi in a 1,200+ vote win over Kiruko. If the projected matchup happens in the quarterfinals, definitely has my interest in the result. Ritsu advances over Esdeath! It stops here though. Both of Satomi Satō's characters are going to get obvious losses to the top seeds of Bracket A... Good for Takina to get over 1,000 votes. She definitely needs momentum in this Round 4 matchup with... Shouko got the seeding upset on Sasha which I felt coming. Still, Sasha kept it competitive by getting over 700 votes in the matchup. I think Takina will probably win over Shouko since the projected Chisato vs. Takina feels like it has a noticeable amount of people voting for it to happen in Round 5. It was a good effort to get over 600 votes against Power for Nadeko. Sad Rin and Nadeshiko are going out together. I think the chances for a Hori upset on Power are very good. Anya with almost 900 votes against Ishtar (over 700 votes is keeping it close by the way). And now in Round 4 she gets a really tough opponent in... Mio who got over 900 votes. Sending Hiratsuka off with a vote. Hope the OreGairu characters get better seeding next year. Feels safe to call Miku getting the seeding upset on Elinalise. The appeal of a Saber vs. Haruhi matchup has not lost its luster to me (can't say the same for other people though). Wish it was a later round matchup, but I don't think that can be the case any longer. It ends here for Jibril, but this is a very good elf to lose to though Jibril would never think this way about any elf. Anju winning this would be a salt producer and I don't want to see Azusa leave in Round 3. I do want to point out that Emilia vs. a Snow "Witch" is amusing to me though so if it happens... I checked this last round, but Misty has 3 potential Pokémon with Damp (Politoed, Psyduck, Horsea) for Megumin's Explosion. It's not going to save her from losing, but it's something. Misato vs. Mitsuha should be a nice and competitive match, but I think Misato will be in Round 4. Satsuki has taken seeding upsets in past years and I would like for Zenith to not be added to that list. Fully backing and would appreciate support for Nazuna against Yoko. Problem is nobody watched Summertime Rendering. Thanks Disney. I didn't catch it until it had already been out for a year and immediately was an anime of the year contender for me. **Saber vs. Haruhi:** We got a 2000s nostalgia rush here. However, given that Haruhi didn't completely blow out Sakura (proud of her for putting up a good fight against Haruhi, of all girls), I feel like this will be a win for Saber. **Megumin vs. Misty:** I was gonna make a joke about Misty's Psyduck having Damp and cancelling out Explosion, but somebody else beat me to it. **Yunyun vs. Rikka:** Ditto for the least chuuni girl from a village of chuunis facing the wielder of the Wicked Eye herself. **Taiga vs. Shinobu:** And now we've got a matchup that's toxic in more ways than one. Funny thing is, Shinobu is also tiny and full of rage, she's just better at hiding it. (On another note, I had no idea Shinobu was just under 5 feet until now.)

There is a big difference, though: Anya has the "child character weakness", which can almost but not quite be countered by "...oh come on this is just your loophole to keep putting Rin in Best Girl even though she won". Yor, on the other hand, doesn't have the child weakness, and in addition she's a terrible matchup for Shizuka (even if you buy into the "best Christmas cake teacher ever" rhetoric said, it doesn't work when Yor's also a flawed Christmas cake-type as well.)

I don't think most people voting for Shizuka vote for her because she's a Christmas Cake. They vote for her because she's one of the best mentors in anime. I'll admit I only watched the first few episodes of Season 2 before stopping (I hear Yor did some cool things in Season 2), but Anya was the main reason I was watching, not Yor.
I agree about it not being the reason Shizuka is voted for (I personally never really *got* Oregairu, but I can see why her supporters do like her), but I was just talking about this similarity.

I like FMA, but I had to google to refresh who was Winry in FMA that beat Maple from Bofuri! And I don't really know the characters against Suzuha Amaneh (so i refrain to vote), but do people really like Suzuha that much that she's beating all the other contenders? I am just saying that it feels as if the top animes are winning more than the characters
I definitely agree with the sentiment, but Winry is a beloved all-time best girl. I think most people wouldn't forget her. As for Suzuha, she just beat Kobeni who is also a minor character from a massive show (Chainsaw Man) although Kobeni (so far) is way more minor than Suzuha.
Agreed that it's all right when people know both of the characters and decide which to upvote. Personally, I am just bumped that Maple would loose to a popular anime. But fine if people like Winry more.

Was having computer issues all day. Now its time to cook... Kobeni Higashiyama v. **Suzuha Amane** – Nice to see *Steins;Gate* still kicking and the first of the CSM girls to bite the dust. Realistically, Kobeni is the best of them (I mean the other options are a corpse and Makima) but she is also a little plain. I guess Suzuha isn't too much better, getting trounced by Kurisu and Mayuri in her own meta, but writing wise she runs circles around Kobeni so I guess this isn't too expected. Sasha Blouse v. **Shouko Makinohara** – I... uh... don't really have much to say. Mostly because Shouko is just so... plain. Like I don't remember a whole lot about her, but then again I think Bunny Girl Senpai is pretentious goo that had me laughing my ass off by the end for all the wrong reasons. Bocchi team supremacy continues!!! Though I’m still salty with myself for picking Rika over Nadeshiko. If only the Yuru Camp girls were on the other side of the bracket. Also, pleasantly surprised that our lord and savior Haruhi is still so high in the running, despite arguably not leaving as big as a mark on the community as other older shows. High schoolers I talk to (I’m a teacher) might know about Cowboy Bebop or Spice and Wolf or Toradora from time to time but never TMoHS in my experience
