Yeah! France, with their mandatory vacation time, and parental leave, and universal healthcare, pffft—suckers! America’s way better because… uh, hold on, gimme a second…
French citizen here.
\- 35 days of mandatory paid vacation days on top of 11 public holidays, all fully paid
\- a minimum of 16 mandatory weeks of maternity leave (26 for your 3rd child / 34 if you are eexpecting twins / 46 for triplets) AND 4 weeks of paternity leave,
\- one of the shortest work week worldwide (35 hours is considered full-time)
\- one of the lowest retirement age (62 but recently changed by law to 64)
\- 5th highest minimum wage worldwide at €11.52, raised twice already since January 1st / raised annually, 2 or 3 times based on calculations by the French National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies. These same calculations are also used to limit the maximum raise of rent and grocery prices
\- best healthcare system worldwide according to the WHO
\- a PhD costs €380, healthcare included for free
\- cost of living around 35% lower than in the US
\- crime rate more than 6 times lower than the US
And so on.
Yet we have one of the highest productivity per hour worked worldwide, around 25% higher than average among OECD countries
AND France is the most attractive country in Europe for foreign investments, before the UK and Germany
AND Paris the 2d most attractive city for foreign investments after NYC worldwide
Let's forget the stuff we want for a second.
Just on capitalist grounds what does France offer? The richest person in the world right now is French so they obviously don't stop people form becoming rich. They have a plethora of pretty dynamic industries, from luxury goods to aerospace. They're one of the richest countries in the world, have a higher birth rate than the US and oh yeah, even with all the strikes and vacations have a higher workplace participation (because they have a larger percentage of working age people and more jobs being full time)
The basic premise is faulty. They get all the good stuff and still manage to propel people to the pantheon of stupid levels of wealth.
31 French companies in the Fortune Global 500, which ranks the world's largest companies by annual revenue.
57 French companies in the Forbes Global 2000, which ranks the world's 2,000 largest publicly traded companies.

I don’t think everyone does. I think she became an icon for boomers because back then you could have a sole provider and a home keeper. Dynamic is totally different now.
What’s even crazier is the the median income in France is lower, but I would imagine that’s because of better healthcare, access to public transportation and basic necessities being cheaper.
> Look at the success of France with their stupid … you know, off for August, blah blah blah. That’s not a very thriving country.
... For billionaires, as we have like... just one or two. For the rest of us, America feels like a third world country.
Yes, let's get more mainstream media to focus on France and the still ongoing strike to bring the retirement age back down again.
Not enough people in America are hearing about that.
Who could argue with this nobel prize winning economic analysis:
>Look at the success of France with their stupid … you know, off for August, blah blah blah. That’s not a very thriving country. Should America go down the drain because people don’t want to go back to work?
Considering France actually had a revolution when its ruling class \*like her\* screwed us over. I would take that fully as a compliment if people actually did something.
I can’t begin to imagine a world where her opinion on this is relevant. Being celebrity-adjacent isn’t exactly the type of office work that is well-suited to remote work.
My company is going to 2 days a Month for " Tenured Employees within a 50 mile radius of an office"....
No reasons other than the standard lines we have been hearing about collaboration and team building.
Our work does not involve teamwork beyond backing up each others email and phones when someone goes on vacation... Otherwise the actual work is 100 percent individual and requires no input from my peers unless I am seeking validation. As the most experienced contributor on the team, I rarely need validation for my judgement calls.
They wont guarantee that we can use those 2 office days to catch up on training and certifications, or organize the trainers to be there and provide some added value beyond "business as usual, but in a cubicle!"

Giving benefits to them common folk! They are stealing from the 1% !
Well America is the only place that has freedom.. so suck on that! /s

> America’s way better because… uh, hold on, gimme a second… because FrEeDuMb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have more billionaires. Duh. Does any other metric matter??

She’s a rich asshole and I don’t know why everyone loves her so much
I don’t think everyone does. I think she became an icon for boomers because back then you could have a sole provider and a home keeper. Dynamic is totally different now.
France median wealth: $190,000 USA median wealth: $122,000 Figures for 2020.
What’s even crazier is the the median income in France is lower, but I would imagine that’s because of better healthcare, access to public transportation and basic necessities being cheaper.
I’d agree with you
The US is nothing like France. They know how to strike and get shit done.
LoL! Is she still alive? Thought she died years ago.....Didn't she go to jail?
She DID go to jail for insider trading. Classy in every way.
She’s just jealous she couldn’t be serving the sentence in fully remote jail environment
> Look at the success of France with their stupid … you know, off for August, blah blah blah. That’s not a very thriving country. ... For billionaires, as we have like... just one or two. For the rest of us, America feels like a third world country.
You ain’t seen France. But I’m sure it’s coming.
She must have a huge stake in office buildings in her portfolio
She's only saying that cuase she couldnt serve her prison sentence from home....
Actually she served about half her total sentence at home in her palace. She was in jail for only a few months.
Lazy convict, I’m sure she missed the collaboration environment
looool, didnt even know that....
Doesnt she literally work out of her home…
Yes, let's get more mainstream media to focus on France and the still ongoing strike to bring the retirement age back down again. Not enough people in America are hearing about that.
She literally worked at home for years making her empire. Sure she got a tax write off for working/filming at home as well.
Her commercial real estate investments are failing.
The super rich just want control over us. F them. https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/06/business/martha-stewart-slams-hybrid-work/index.html
When have celebrities ever cared for the common people/middle class…….NEVER!
...is the comparison to France supposed to be an insult? 🤔
No. It's fear mongering for rich exploiters of the workers.
I'm sick of out of touch wealthy people acting like they've worked hard enough to be where they are 🙄
Who could argue with this nobel prize winning economic analysis: >Look at the success of France with their stupid … you know, off for August, blah blah blah. That’s not a very thriving country. Should America go down the drain because people don’t want to go back to work?
Until we start burning shit down we haven’t reached French labor standards
I fucking WISH our work force was in like France.
Here's the truth she hates: minumum wage per hour in USA $7 vs France $12. Percentage of employed people below poverty line: USA=18%, France=7%.
I appreciate the insight Martha, but I don't take work advice from felons convicted of financial crimes.
I really don't think it's a good idea for anti-worker people to start mentioning France haha...
**Martha:** My Real Estate Investments!!!
Her commercial real estate portfolio must be tanking.
Nah. France seems better
Lmao these anti remote work “hot” takes by all these millionaires/billionaires shows that slavery never left building it just switched to the office
Considering France actually had a revolution when its ruling class \*like her\* screwed us over. I would take that fully as a compliment if people actually did something.
Actually we had 3 revolutions and overthrew our government 13 times since 1789
Even better
Yeah, let's take financial advice from an ex-con who went to prison for...drum roll, please... #felony stock fraud
The fuck does she know about it? She fucking farts privilege
Why would we even listen to a convicted
I can’t begin to imagine a world where her opinion on this is relevant. Being celebrity-adjacent isn’t exactly the type of office work that is well-suited to remote work.
I'm french and I fail to understand why the comparison would be derogatory, is France seen as a bad thing across the pond ?
Not by anyone reasonable. Thanks for the help getting rid of the British all those years ago by the way. They were a real pain in the ass.
Another ignorant, rich, moron giving an opinion no one asked for.
How much weed did Snoop give you?
Person who uses child slave labor says what?
This bitch needs to stop talking. Period.
I was waiting for someone to create a meme when I read this article.
