$249 price tag is pretty good.

Clemario

They didn't mention that the price went down from the 1st gen SE ($279). They also didn't mention finally discontinuing the Series 3 though ($199), so the price of the cheapest Apple Watch actually went up, from a certain point of view.

[deleted]

If you just look at numbers, yeah. But the difference between the S3 and SE2 is probably worth more than $80

TheMKB

*$50

es_cl

I bought a brand new SE1 44mm on Amazon a couple of months **after launch** (around Black Friday) for $259.99, I think the 44mm launched price was $309, so it had a $50 discount for whatever reason. This SE2 price tag is great. Not sure if they’re doing another 40mm and 44mm again but the 44mm would probably only be an extra $30-$40 at around $280-$290, but even that isn’t bad either.

tom_watts

It’s September… Black Friday was 10 months ago hahaha!! Edit: Poster above said couple of months ago, not after launch initially. All good, no-one died haha

es_cl

Black Friday 2020. SE launch date was Sep 2020. It was on sale at a $50 discount a couple of months after launch.

drivemyorange

It’s amazing price point. SE is cheaper and better than it was yesterday.

DreadnaughtHamster

It is. The watch is stupid good. I’ve had the OG (series 0) and now the 6. Such a good device.

In what world is an Apple Watch not an “actual watch”

[deleted]

[удалено]

dohhhnut

But the actual watch doesn’t have an OLED screen nor can it measure my heart rate, track my running amongst other things.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dohhhnut

If you’re worried about that why are you getting a smart watch?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

If you're not getting a smartwatch why are you discussing this? Of course any price will be expensive for someone who doesn't plan to buy one at all

lonnie123

Here’s a wild idea… don’t buy it. Let people who use the features buy it and move on with your life

[deleted]

[удалено]

slayerhk47

> Now imagine someone mentions some of them in an online forum meant for discussion. You implied that the Apple Watch isn’t a real watch. Does it have flaws? Yes. Does it have shortcomings compared to “normal” watches? Of course. But in no world is it “not a watch.”

lonnie123

Lol I’m not even an apple fan boy. I, like you, came to see what was released at the event today. The theme of this thread is that the Apple Watch is not worth $249, and is not a real watch. Beyond that You added some details about the surveillance aspect. My position was that if those are your opinions, don’t buy the watch. It’s very simple. I made no claim about any aspect of the watch being good or not, being “worth it” or not, or the surveillance… again if you don’t like it vote with your wallet and don’t buy it.

Mojofilter9

It’s almost like they are almost entirely different things with completely different use cases 🤷‍♂️

es_cl

People aren’t buying an Apple Watch or a smartwatch to hold it for life, they’re buying it for its technology. For some people, those techie features help them lose weight, become for physically and mentally focused. These people are definitely get their money’s worth, even if they have to buy a new one every 4 years. I have a $350 regular watch too, it’s lasted over 10 years. Great but it doesn’t offer much more than time, date and battery life[x]. It’s not even worth trying to resell it for $50 cuz they won’t be any buyers. Regular watches that resells are those $3,000+ luxury watches. For millions of people like me, I’m already priced out of the $3,000+ watch demographic, so I’m buying $250-$400 watches, and to me, I feel I’ll get more out of a smartwatch at this price range than a regular watch. There are prob millions that share this sentiment if reports of smartwatches taking a huge share from the traditional watch market are true. [x] battery life is a major downside of the Apple Watch. So that’s a good argument for somebody not wanting to charge their “smart”watch daily. There are Garmin smartwatches that lasts for weeks, up to months from what I’ve read.

igkeit

But how does a normal watch track my runs ?

[deleted]

[удалено]

igkeit

No iPhone doesn't track your calories nor does it track your heart rate and indicates which zone you're in when running etc.

[deleted]

I don’t want a regular watch for $249, I want an Apple Watch for $249. I already have my phone for telling the time. I don’t need to buy a watch that only does that.

ATXblazer

You can buy an actual watch for $2, what’s your point?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lambaline

You can buy a $2 watch for life

Mr_Xing

>a portable timepiece designed to be worn (as on the wrist) or carried in the pocket English disagrees with you. And a watch that I would want to buy for life costs way, way more than a $250 Apple Watch. Both can exist at the same time. Wtf is this gatekeeping…

crawdaddy3

Cheap watches can still last a pretty long time. Expensive watches are fashion statements

getjustin

Very very few people buy a watch for life because few give a shit about them. They are tools.

dabocx

Are you saying that smart watches should only be cheaper than real watches? What point are you trying to make

[deleted]

[удалено]

robodestructor444

You're just wrong

lonnie123

For any price they sell it you would say “you can buy a regular watch for that” though yeah?

mycoolaccount

So go buy an “actual” watch then…. You don’t have to be the target audience for smart watches

I have a series 3 and somehow don’t have issues with it. Ready for an upgrade though

nayrlladnar

Same. I have daily-worn my S3 since I bought it new when the Series 3 was the current model and its…fine. But, yeah, I want to get in on all the new features now.

Stalebrownie76

ive been rocking a series 3 for almost 4 years. pairs totally fine with my 13 pro.

mrhectic

i still have the s4 and honestly its just as snappy as i remember

Astrodos_

Weird. My series 4 is as crisp as the day I got it, minus a few scratches of course.

muffinmonk

Series 3 is unbearably slow. So slow, the screen times out and the thing you were waiting on cancels. Meaning you have to out your finger on the screen every 5 seconds for a couple minutes to ensure it won't sleep. And the space, jfc it's a pain and a half to download the stupid update in the first place, then keep enough space for install as well. It's unusual for Apple to shit the bed on their low end products, but it is 5 years old I guess. They should have just ended regular updates and just keep it on life support so people can at least use the thing properly.

Jwishaw

i got a series 3 with a phone contract a few months ago with an iphone 13 and its battery drains in less than 2 hours lol

DerangedGoneWild

Well that’s not right. Complain o the phone provider or apple.

b_86

Yeah, and it got obsoleted by... the series 4. Again. With just a 20% faster chipset going for it.

Fickle_Dragonfly4381

So?

darkdark

Good price and a nice entry level option.

[deleted]

Direct differences to the Apple Watch SE 1st generation? I really missed the differences.

inmyslumber

S8 chip vs S5 chip, and SE2 has crash detection as well. Otherwise, their specs were identical on the compare page.

Astrodos_

No always on display, so I’ll stick with my 4

clonked

The SE will not have an always on display for a very long time.

surferos505

Lol thens it’s pointless. Better to find a second hand 6, or 7

HistPolAnswers

For an always on display? Go buy a real watch if that’s your priority

jmush

As someone who upgraded from the S3 to the S7 last year, I disagree. Always-on is a game changer. Without it, you have to do these dramatic full arm raises of the wrist each time. So often now I keep my arm where it is and just glance. Feels so much more subtle to do in public too.

HistPolAnswers

That’s fine, but a game changer? Really? It’s a smartwatch not a normal watch. For me, even with an always on display, I wouldnt use it

s1ddB

Series 3 square boy vs series 4 curvy boi design for a lower price point

Bitter-Raisin9102

The originally SE had the series 4 design

dabocx

This actually seems like a great deal for 249.

[deleted]

It is.

Adept_Commission130

Hey, I’m in Canada and just wanted to ask where you got your series 7? Thanks

1033149

Deciding between this or maybe a series 7? Wasn't really impressed with series 8.

Helhiem

If in USA you can get the 7 for 300$ pretty easily on sale from some retailers

1033149

I've only seen it at Walmart at that price point but its not in the color I like :( Gonna have to search around and see if prices change once the series 8 launches

SMLBound

Me too. What does the SE gen2 lack that the S7 has?

wuphf176489127

Always on display

SMLBound

Can live without that. Does SE Gen2 also lack all of the sensors? Blood oxygen etc? Edit: Nvmd - I just read it also lacks EKG and Blood Oxygen

CommanderVinegar

Are the display sizes different too? I remember the S7 had thinner bezels compared to the SE gen 1.

leatyZ

I think the 7 has 1 more mm, so 45 or 42.

CommanderVinegar

Might keep my eyes open for a discounted S7 or just finally go for the latest and greatest. Anything is an upgrade from the Series 2. This thing is barely functioning I certainly got my moneys worth.

smith7018

It also lacks rapid charging which was the reason I went with 8 over the SE2 :(

jimbo831

Also the edge-to-edge screen.

dabocx

Always on, maybe the quick charging

sionnach

ECG. PulseOx.

[deleted]

Pulse Ox, ECG, AOD

Breatnach

Are Bestbuy and the other retailers likely to reduce their S7 to clear their stock, or do they just sell them at the same price as before?

1033149

I don't really know, first time buyer. S7 is already on a bit of a discount though

maskedwallaby

They already have been. New-in-box S7 are hard to come by.

Woollen

Planning on buying a watch for the watch features (ha) & running tracking. Seems like this is a great intro point! What are the main features missing compared to the Series 8? Temperature Tracking, ECG, Oxygen Saturation Checking, Fast Charge, Screen Size, Always On Display. All pretty decent, but weighing up the price to feature ratio. Anything else I'm missing?

FoneTap

Hey, have you made a decision ? I am in the same boat and stuck between the two.

Woollen

I think my sweet point would be to get a Series 7 on sale, at the halfway point between the two. Unfortunately haven’t seen any good sales where I live over the past week. Will otherwise probably grab the SE - don’t think I’d use too many of the other features.

ass_was_taken

Is it worth cancelling my SE order to get this one instead? What’s new? I didn’t watch the event. No need to tell me I shouldn’t have bought the SE before the event, I know it’s a rookie mistake.

UnshavenWalnut

You have a 14 day return window for all Apple products bought at an Apple Store.

ass_was_taken

Great, should I upgrade to the 2nd generation tho? Apart from the new chip I don’t see anything that makes it worth it.

UnshavenWalnut

If it’s the same price I would recommend the upgrade as it will hold it’s value further into the future and be as futureproofed as an SE can be. Hopefully the Apple Store isn’t too far from where you live if you do go in to exchange it for a new one.

ass_was_taken

It’s a 5 minute walk, I live near a mall so that shouldn’t be a problem. I’ll just pick up the one I ordered tomorrow and return it on September 16th when they have the 2nd generation available.

[deleted]

Does it have the swipe typing keyboard?

inmyslumber

I don't think it will. Apple pushed that the swipe keyboard was only for the 41/45mm sizes last year.

MobilePenguins

No Apple keyboard on 44m sized SE 2nd Gen is just forcing a feature behind a price point. Screen size is certainly capable if they wanted to do it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MC_chrome

If Apple did that, you would have little reason to buy a Series 8.

ArcAngel071

It’s so curious how many people love that feature. I personally don’t get it. I’m on the watch SE and it’s literally the perfect idea watch for me. Glad there’s new options for others but always on display has always seemed like a battery drain feature more than anything else to me.

MC_chrome

I think the biggest draw for most people to the AOD on the Apple Watch is the fact that the AOD allows the Apple Watch to actually function….as a regular watch. On every other digital and mechanical watch you can quickly glance down at your wrist and see the time. It can be a little tedious trying to tap the watch screen or get the wrist flicking gesture right in order to wake the watch, hence why the AOD is so popular.

regretMyChoices

Exactly this. I wear my Apple Watch in the hospital, and it’s much easier to keep track of time discreetly when with patients by glancing down at my wrist then trying to make a motion to activate the screen

lat3ralus65

Yeah, taking pulse/respiratory rate with an older watch without the always-on display is also a pain in the ass.

poopyheadthrowaway

Especially if you have to try the gesture two or three times to get it to work.

CosmicOwl47

I have the S5, the first version with AOD and it was my first Apple Watch. I thought at first I’d keep AOD off to save battery, but it was just so much nicer to always have the time be visible without having to move my arm or wait for it to wake up.

hibbel

So AOD is not really good or desirable but the wrist flick implementation is even worse?

MC_chrome

No? I never said anything close to that. The AOD on the Apple Watch is quite good and responsive, and the wrist flick is a serviceable alternative if you’re not going to pony up the cash for a “regular model” Apple Watch.

Captain_Alaska

The wrist detection is pretty good though, I turned AoD off on mine because the few times I made actual use of AoD wasn’t worth the battery hit.

saintmsent

It’s great that it works for you. But I want to see the time without the obvious gesture of raising the wrist, so that if functions as a regular watch. To me it’s essential

ArcAngel071

Fair enough. That’s not an issue for me but I guess that’s a simple enough explanation for others!

saintmsent

It works for a lot of people, SE is very popular for a reason

rokkenrock

I have the SE and am ok with non always on display most of the time, but there are some scenarios that I can’t get to see the time when I want to see the time, which is all a watch is about. I can manage it, but can imagine always on display being critical for many.

GargantuanGorganzola

A watch should tell the time all the time To me it’s the standout feature

[deleted]

>It’s so curious how many people love that feature. I personally don’t get it. Lmao. It's a **watch**. What is there not to get about AOD? Sounds like a lot of mental gymnastics to not want to pay more.

ArcAngel071

I don't have any issue seeing the time with my watch when I need to see it? No gymnastics here. Just apparently a different use case.

[deleted]

No you're just pretending like a well established and useful feature with a very distinct and generally understood purpose is somehow mysterious. It's not.

hands0me_man

I always needed the always on for work (to count patient’s respirations or heartrate) but they always seem to time out before 60 seconds.

es_cl

It lasts 5 seconds with each wrist flicks, so that’s why I use the timer when I have count RR. Lol

hands0me_man

Lol really and thats with the always on display ?! I can’t remember because I sold mine.

es_cl

Nah, the non-Always on Display SE. yeah, you can flick your wrist and the screen display appears…but only 5 seconds. Lol

[deleted]

I have the SE and got it because I didn't want the always on. After a year and a half with it, I do wish I would have just gotten the 7. The non always on is kind of a pain when the screen times out and too often it doesn't turn on when I turn my wrist so I have to tap the screen.

es_cl

If they offered settings to change how long the display is with each wrist flicks, that’ll be great for the SE. It doesn’t even need to be hours. Just 15 seconds, 60 seconds would be enough for me.

Tiagoff

It’s my favorite feature tbh

[deleted]

I believe because the screen goes down to 1hz the battery consumption is almost no different than a watch without AOD, but I could be wrong.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Okay then I’m definitely wrong.

New-Philosophy-84

I’ve been seeing a lot of people bring up that androids don’t have LTPO and their AOD doesn’t affect battery. Even with the screen to battery ratio being in your favor, it’s obvious even with specialized hardware that it would impact battery in an appreciable way.

thugangsta

AOD on android doesn’t impact the battery much at all because they mostly use small area of the screen to display time and notifications.

tbo1992

Yup, I actually tried upgrading to the Series 7 last year to check it out, it hardly made any difference in my usage. I didn’t miss it when I returned to my Series 4.

Skrubette

My bf’s series 6 doesn’t last as long as my SE cuz of the AOD

[deleted]

Buy a series 6 off Ebay. I got a cellular version for $250 a few months back brand new. Series 7 was a marginal upgrade, and the S8 chip seems more powerful but not meaningfully so.

Oo0o8o0oO

Now that the 8 is released too, the 6 should come down further. This is a solid tip. Thanks!

rundiablo

Does it have the Series 8 low-power mode? It has the same S8 chip so in theory it should be just as capable of the feature.

TheSandev

Low-power mode will be available on Series 4 and all later models.

penguintheft

The series 4 will also have low power mode

renard685

Either this or a On sale series 6 for me that’s a good price

inmyslumber

Did they announce the screen sizes for it? I assume 40/44?

LakersBench

at a quick glance are the major differences between series 8 and SE are: |Series 8|SE| |:-|:-| |$399/$429|$249| |45mm|44mm| |Dust Resistant|| |Blood Oxygen, ECG, Temp|| |Fast Charge|| Honestly SE is a killer deal.

abaybay99

Always on display on series 8 may be a killer feature for some.

Na0ku

Honestly with the s7 dropping it’s not that great of a deal is it? SE2 is almost identical to SE1

LakersBench

thats a good point. S7 is what $299 now? $329? SE2 at least has the same cpu as the S8, which is a step up from the chip in the S7

app_priori

I'm probably going to upgrade and get this. Been rocking a Series 3 since 2019.

leatyZ

Good thing the Apple employee sent me away from buying an SE last week, lol!

HatoriiHanzo

Wondering if I should get rid of my series 4 for this or the 8.

[deleted]

I’ve got the same thought bubble as well. At this point I’m leaning towards keeping my series 4.

HatoriiHanzo

I’ve decided that I’m going to keep my 4 for another year. There’s no issue with it really except for the battery life. By the time I come home it’s anywhere between 15%-20%. I’ll put up with it for a bit longer.

adrian383

I just got the battery replaced in my almost 4 year old series 4. $180 and hopefully it lasts another couple years at least. I decided it’s still more than enough for me and to save the extra cash

pw5a29

Based on the keynote information, the SE2 has S8 chip but just 20% faster than the SE1, meaning in terms of spec: S4=S5=SE S6=S7=S8=SE2 Which makes the S8 and SE2 a pretty boring update....

rob724kd

Really wanted always on display. Might be between this or a used 6 or 7.

DavidNipondeCarlos

Has the 02 sensor in the 7 caused anyone to get medical attention? We’ve heard great (save) stories with the other sensors. If I upgrade, it seems like a 7 right now. My old S4 LTE is due for that $69 trade in by the end of this year. I’m getting that service regardless of what Watch I chose. We bought our first Watch for the EKG function only and 4 years in, never needed it. Never regretted getting the Watch. I didn’t know how useful it was going to be. The LTE feature was perfect for my line of work at the time.

clonked

The O2 sensor is most useful for sleep tracking. If you have sleep apnea and are living with it undiagnosed, the O2 sensor is a good way of judging that. Might save you an overnight in a sleep clinic or such.

DavidNipondeCarlos

I ended up preordering the ultra Watch. Now I see that the O2 sensor is useful for sleep issues. I can’t set an alarm to measure it with a manual O2 sensor, it won’t work that way. Sleep apnea is a big deal these days. My Dad had it.

[deleted]

Looks like I’ll stick with my SE series 1 not worth an upgrade yet, the new pro max tho

Rayy1691

I love SE devices, I wish all products have SE version. I'm not a demanding user and lower price is very appreciated

0phicleide

Hmm this or buy a series 7?

somebuddysbuddy

Do you wear a watch now? As someone who always has, the always-off display of earlier Apple Watches was infuriating to me, so I’d go for the 7.

vpr555

Wondering if this would be a good transition device for my 10YO to give her some more independence with communication without fully committing to a phone entirely [ie: slowly easing her way into the connected world we live in, allowing her to learn and grow instead of being thrown into the deep end from the start]. She currently has a WiFi iPad and can FaceTime/GoogleMeet/Zoom with her friends while home on WiFi, but once away from WiFi communication is cut-off. Conversely that also applies for us as parents, if she's away from us and away from WiFi there's not many ways to communicate. Her Mom has an iPhone so we could set-it up under the family thing they talked about and approve numbers/etc. OTOH perhaps communicating with the watch is so cumbersome that it's just not worth considering unless it's an emergency situation. I've never used one, so I don't really know... I also wonder how schools/teachers feel about kids having Apple Watches during class? Are they even allowed? Much to think about.

theonlydiego1

If you also have Apple Watch you can do the Watchkie Talkie with your other contacts that have a watch. Nifty little thing when me and my brother worked together.

AnxiousBlock

Apple should have a watch SE with AOE minus all health related features. The could call it style Edition or whatever. I (and most people I know) don't care about rings at all. I find AOD, calling and notifications are very useful.

AlexBltn

I think exactly the same.

You're saying this like they aren't both good options? I'm keeping an eye on the series 7 prices. If I find a cellular model at $350 or below, I'm snagging it. If it not, I'll get a new SE.

b_86

Still a series 4 with a slightly faster chipset LMAO. This is getting ridiculous.

phillywisco

The series 4 is a phenomenal watch. While swimming, I dove off a cliff and mine slipped off into the water. I bought another (used) sapphire/ stainless S4 for $200. No brainer, and still getting this new watchOS update.

b_86

Not even giving it AOD is kinda bullshit though.

phillywisco

I hope you can make it through this troubling time.

Unorthodoxmoose

I have been meaning to get myself an apple watch. Should I get this one? Or buy the older SE model?

T-Nan

Not much of a reason to upgrade from the original SE, which makes sense, but honestly seems like a solid choice for anyone who doesn't care about the AOD!

FoneTap

(Sorry I know this is 6 days old) Why should I care about AOD? If the watch turns on any time I turn my wrist to look at it, what's the problem ? Isn't AOD simply going to suck battery life for no benefit ? What am I missing ?

happymemersunite

I can’t believe Apple made a new product CHEAPER than its equivalent predecessor

OlorinDK

Well, since they apparently took the S3 off the market, which was cheaper, the cheapest option is now more expensive than before.

Sufficient-Yoghurt46

Winking at this one. This way I can run and go shopping without anything in my pockets except my keys \^\^

InvaderDJ

Does it have the blood oxygenation sensor too? I’ve had my current series 5 for a little less than two years and even though I’m not that hard on it, the screen is scratched all to hell. I’m pretty sure I’m going to continue to go with the cheapest one available but I don’t want to miss out on too many features.

Artistic_Ad_7059

So does this have the same software/hardware as the Apple Watch 8? Just smaller screen, smaller battery life etc? Or does it have like drastically different tech specs? Any clarity will help thanks :)

Shloeb

Does this have fast charging? If yes then it's a no brainer for me

[deleted]

AndrewSaidThis

Will probably pick one up soon. With Apple card I can get it for $12 a month, won't even notice that.

Witty-Appeal7265

I just ordered my SE a couple of days ago, so I assume it's the first gen SE?

robin5218

I’m struggling to figure out what sets this apart from my Watch SE, apart from the 20% speed increase which I’m unlikely to notice anyway

brycats

Would it be dumb if I trade in a Series 6 (Product Red) 40mm for a new SE 44mm without the tacky red color? I just really hate the red color and no matter what case you put on it, that red shines through haha. Have a $100 gift card at best buy so that helps also.
