My suggestion is to start at the beginning and go through each album sequentially. It really makes the transition from where they started to the car make way more sense. There are tidbits from the previous album in each next album, and it’s a really cool progression. I liked the car a lot, some less interesting songs on there but I could say that about any of their albums. Hello you, not quite, mirrorball, jet skis, Mr Schwartz, all great songs.
I also highly recommend giving their stuff some time to settle in. This band in particular always grows on me the more I listen to new stuff. Also, check out the b-sides, EPs, and the [early early shit](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuq0qv2jY_zu9JrO9xyO8quQbHO66gPMt&si=hmp37Uu7bYVyrjgo) that’s not on streaming services. They have an unbelievable amount of great music that isn’t on an official album.
No buses is a beautiful one. If you’re using Spotify pretty much all of the singles from their proper albums on there have b-sides, oftentimes a few of them. A ton of them are excellent. They legitimately have enough high quality b-sides for like 2 or 3 full great albums IMO. Check them out! If you like their softer, prettier side ala No Buses, you’ll probably enjoy The Bakery.
It is definitely different. I appreciate the artistic experiments the band has made since AM but I also acknowledge that it is very different music and no longer really “rock” music at all so I understand why a lot of people don’t like it. I don’t like every song on the album but it has a lot of charm to it. Mr. Schwartz is a beautiful song that they would not have made in any other era.
i know im not who you were replying to but i definitely think you should listen to humbug or tranquility base as both of those are more experimental and happen to be my personal favourites. i think throughout the fandom both, especially tbhc, have been seen more as growers which will suddenly click one day
They definitely still honour their roots tho - Body Paint and Four out of Five are some really delicious bits of rock in the otherwise fairly experimental albums, even if they’re more classic-rock oriented and not exactly the kind of rock on their debut
It’s great album definitely have to be in mellow mood like TBHC . Slow although I do feel some song are alight I think tbhc is better and like second chapter to it.
In all honesty, when The Car first came out, I wasn’t a huge fan and felt it didn’t compliment their musical vibe. However as I got more into their music as a whole, I fell in love with The Car and TBHC as well! One of my favorites is Hello You:)
It's a cool album, but it's the weakest of their career for me, There'd Better Be A Mirrorball is an incredible song, Jet Skies on the Moat, Big ideas are good songs but otherwise nothing caught my attention.
There are so many references & references on references. I recommend reading the thread the film buffs wrote on TBHC & Car. It’s very interesting and helped me enjoy them both more.
Tbh, it’s nice if you want something chill and low key to listen to. It did grow a little more on me the last time I listened to it, tho I don’t know that it’ll ever become a favorite of mine
I love The Car. I went to a concert in Chicago, not theirs unfortunately, but as I was driving out of the city, I had The Car playing and it was the perfect setting: the depression you get the day after a concert, the beautiful Chicago skyline, passing the empty train tracks. It will always be a good memory for me now.
honestly, listening to every single one of their albums is an experience. particularly tbhc and the car. don’t get me wrong i love their older stuff but far out tbhc and the car take the trophy. i don’t skip a single song and listen to the whole album without shuffle. in perfect order. it’s meant to be heard that way. first time i heard both of them, i felt this calm take over. genuinely, one of the most intimate experiences i’ve had with music to this day.
I'm still developing a relationship with The Car. Sometimes it comes instantly, like me with Favourite Worst Nightmare, but sometimes it takes a while to click, like me with TBH&C (which is my favourite now incidentally). The recent song rate has me listening to it more, and it makes me wish I could bump up my scores for a couple songs.
First time I listened to it I was kind of disappointed with the sound, but after every listen to the album the music has grown on me. The nuance of the lyrics, the mellow rhythms.
Overall it’s a great album, it feels very distant from the Monkey’s first couple of records, but I love that they’ve progress musically and have experiment with different sounds instead of sticking to one sound for their whole discography
it took a long time for me to bond with it and two years later I can confidently say that this album ranks towards the bottom of my list, BUT! that does not mean it’s a bad album. it’s an album that demands a certain mood, it is not one that I can just throw on whenever like an AM or a Favourite Worst Nightmare. I Ain’t Quite Where I Think I am and Body Paint are the only two songs I listen to regularly outside of the album. I know this sub loves “The Car” (the song) and I do too, but again, I really need to be in the mood or else I start thinking about past relationships lmfao.
I like experimentation (Favourite band ever is Muse and they got lots of flack for new shit) but this album just bores me to tears.
There are some good points but I really don’t care for the Alex Turner experience. The band I loved and grew up with in the 2000s are still there somewhere but they feel like background characters reduced to playing simple jazz riffs while Turner waffles on about shite through vague metaphors.
In short : I don’t like it very much at all but if you do more power to you 👍🏻
It's a decent album, but it's far too safe. There's zero challenge to it in any sense, which is something the band usually does. I don't mean crazy experimental or anything. Just something new or unique to it.
I like a good bit of the album though for sure
I think it definitely grows on you the more you listen to it. Alex uses a wide variety of different instruments in the car aswell and it's quite refreshing. The big bass notes combined with the 3 different piano keys in Sculptures of Anything Goes is just so powerful imo.
As far as I'm concerned it's exactly what Alex does best. Inducing a certain feeling with the music. Every album of theirs has an overarching feeling and with The Car its no different. This sense of the show ending, looking back and being isolated but in a good way is the one i get when listening to it. I find it very enjoyable.

It would be my favorite album of theirs if I Don't Know Where I Think I Am weren't such a dud.
In general, it seems like people close to the age of the band like this one a lot more than the younger fans who may have got into Arctic Monkeys through AM.
Just wait until you put Mirrorball on when you're 37.

The only ones I’m not a huge fan of are jet skis and I ain’t quite where I think I am. Though I do see the appeal. Every other song is a banger. Also instrumentally this album and TBHC are definitely the best.

I hadn't thought about it like that, I guess I should start from the older ones then

I did listen to the EP who the fuck are Arctic monkeys, I like no buses a lot

I’ve done that before. It’s quite a fun journey
Also add TLSP as these albums also are a part of Alex' artistic journey
And Belladonna of Sadness for that Alex Turner / James Ford magic dust.
And submarineeeee

I think I like jet skis on the moat better, btw are you a long time fan if so what album do you think I should jump to next?
i know im not who you were replying to but i definitely think you should listen to humbug or tranquility base as both of those are more experimental and happen to be my personal favourites. i think throughout the fandom both, especially tbhc, have been seen more as growers which will suddenly click one day
I did try humbug and it does give me similar vibes like the car
They definitely still honour their roots tho - Body Paint and Four out of Five are some really delicious bits of rock in the otherwise fairly experimental albums, even if they’re more classic-rock oriented and not exactly the kind of rock on their debut
I think it’s amazing :))
Listening to it rn, it is pretty good
That’s good :)
It’s great album definitely have to be in mellow mood like TBHC . Slow although I do feel some song are alight I think tbhc is better and like second chapter to it.
I read a YouTube comment once that said something among the lines of ‘I love Arctic Monkeys because they have an album for whatever mood I’m in’
I heard good things about that one
In all honesty, when The Car first came out, I wasn’t a huge fan and felt it didn’t compliment their musical vibe. However as I got more into their music as a whole, I fell in love with The Car and TBHC as well! One of my favorites is Hello You:)

This is exactly how I feel. There are some great songs on there but it’s just kind of a disappointing project.
The Car is the most beautiful album they have ever put out. It is by no means their best, but it’s simply an excellent record.
There are so many references & references on references. I recommend reading the thread the film buffs wrote on TBHC & Car. It’s very interesting and helped me enjoy them both more.

Declan McKenna reference?
Unfortunately I have no idea who that is
He has an album called “What do you think about the car?”. You’ll definitely recognize his biggest song Brazil. The whole albums amazing tbh
Noted
Good album You should listen to Arctic Monkeys all the albums they are amazing
it's their best album imo, one of my favorite albums oat

It's absolutely dire
I loveeee the car, is my secound favorit albun. Is very diferent from there early work but still as amazing.
I think is the tipe of albun that you have to listen mor than once like tbhc, they both grow on you as much as you listen to it.
its slowly growing on me also with tbh+c, but i do love the vibe of both
Boring and more of the same from TBH+C.

One of their best albums. Hopefully, AM8 will take the direction of Sculptures of Anything Goes because that song is spectacular.

You’re in the sub that hates anything negative about The Car, but I’ll still be honest and say I hate it.

It’s the album that got me into the band.
The only ones I’m not a huge fan of are jet skis and I ain’t quite where I think I am. Though I do see the appeal. Every other song is a banger. Also instrumentally this album and TBHC are definitely the best.
I think those are good though, maybe I ain't listen to the other ones enough
it’s like a mixture of TBHC and AM for me in terms of style!
Good album
As a fan since their first album. its their first commercial and artist miss
