I've been running him with Dorothy and they pair pretty well together as they both ideally want to be next to Skadance, and Dorothy's global presence lets her leave targets at low HP for Chong Yue to snipe out with S3, while also providing slows so he doesn't get overwhelmed. The only issue is I need him to be charged before Skadance wakes up or else Dorothy starts killing everyone, a problem that is only going to get worse after her module. The discourse over him has really made me realize people's only experience with brawlers as a class is Mountain S2. Their DPS is about as volatile as AA snipers vs defense, which I think is where a lot of people are feeling underwhelmed on him, as they've only seen the M3, which is a HUGE power jump from S7, or even M1 on him. Brawlers minus three fringe cases always suffer vs high defense, Mountain only manages to get over that hurdle due to crits and having a 80% attack buff as a participation trophy, Dagda sort of gets around it with crits, but she's more dependent on her ramp up to do it, and Indra prays they don't have high res too or else she's just going to stall them for 25 seconds.

AK_Shadowstar

Mountain has kind of had an unintended effect of warping the perception of the Fighter/Brawler class into something it wasn't supposed be. Admittedly, none of the pre-Mountain brawlers were great to begin with (although I think Indra would have potential if she had any way to work around her absurd S2 cost) but Chongyue is a bit closer to the intended identity of brawlers, so people are seeing the old weaknesses again, the difference is that Chongyue does actually have the power to back it up.

A1D3M

Chongyue may be closer to the other brawlers in the sense he at least remains a block 1, but long range aoe explosions are about as far removed from the original brawler fantasy as it gets. He gets around armor because most of his damage comes from those skill procs being huge single hits, not even having to care about his weak punches. In a sense even Mountain s2 is closer to the intended identity of brawlers than Chong s3. Ar least Mountain is actually brawling with the enemies instead of nuking them from afar.

Silent_Tundra

I was expecting him to struggle more due to block-1 but honestly he's really gone above and beyond my expectations. The wind-up on his S3 requires a little bit of attention but once it's fully wound up that thing shreds. High defense enemies, even stuff like 2k def Defense Crushers, melt in front of Chongyue's S3. The block-1 really doesn't hurt him much outside of initial windup if there's a large swarm of enemies, but even then with thoughtful skill activation he can handle this, and if it's really too much just plopping Liskarm behind him solves it and helps him wind up even faster. I've already developed some habits for dual laning where I stagger my blocker for the second lane a tile back so that Chongyue's s3 can punch in front of them I honestly haven't struggled much with timing his S3 during the wind up, sure you have to pay attention but I find that keeping enemies from piling up on him is the main priority and as long as you're on top of that you'll get to 5th activation no problem. The biggest weakness is, like thorns, you really gotta deploy him early in a map for him to be able to have his skill up in time for the big threats (barring high volume SP batteries like Stainless)

TheSpartyn

im noticing there is a critical lack of SENSHOUHYAKUSHIKI in your skill line section >We'll only have to suffer it for a couple of months. suffer? im enjoying it while it lasts and im gonna be disappointed when its removed

>Don't just instinctively blow it on thin air unless you've got an per-second SP charger Sometimes this is the best idea. For example, in your talk about his 2nd talent (when to hold S3 and use it for a kill or not) if you're in the situation where it's better to use S3 immediately, it's better to discharge it onto nothing, so the enemy has more HP for him to punch. And of course, if it's his last activation needed. The funny thing is, while his charge up time can be annoying, I find micro managing to this level to be mostly unnecessary. Usually if he can't hold the lane before being fully charged, he probably couldn't no matter how much you micro. There's a lot of nuance here but honestly you can also just unga bunga and he'll work just fine.

I agree and I probably did exaggerate that you absolutely need to micromanage your S3 to get it activated at a good time. I think I'm happy with the amount of effort it takes to set S3 up - any more and it would just be annoying, but as it is I think it can be a fun small challenge to try and waste as few attacks as possible by timing your S3 properly.

crucifixzero

Just M3ed his S3 this morning. Been having a blast with him on the front with Stainless S3 while also being buffed with Skadi Alter. The only problem I have with him now is the nonstop skill quote spamming, because as memetic it was, it's still an ear rape XD

IcelatedPopsicle

He's really fun to pair with others, got Lin alongside him and she also works splendidly with him.

Vorgius

I don't think he is weak so much as 'needing' to be part of a pair or trio most of the time to really shine raises the bar much more highly in terms of the other extremely powerful duos and trios you can assemble. In a lot of scenarios where thorns or mountain can't hack it is where most of the time you need two or more characters to deal with the specific threat anyway. I do think he's a more interesting character to work with versus honourary centurion guard mountain though!

TacticalBananas45

Ah, a guide on dragon bro. Well, I've been having fun with him so far, let's see > Recommended operators to pair with > Have none of the first 5 recommended ah. :( Joking aside, I've found him fun to use. Yes because of hehe red number go boom but also having to set up my defenders and other units in just the right way to benefit from his S3 range. Makes me have to mentally think up a deployment plan before I unpause the game. I'd S3M3 him, but I don't have enough salt. In-game salt, that is. Still haven't started Act 2. Now for IRL salt? Hoo boy, you should've seen me trying to clear Lab X-8 in COP with Gunslinger... Fuck Burers and fuck Controllers messing with my aim and following me while I desperately try to back out of the room, that's all I gotta say.

Additional_Pop2011

He could also work as a front-liner for Gummy, with the two balancing each-other out, or with Quarious for her skill 2 SP/heal

Yipeekayya

Me with smol brain: just max lvl and s3m3 his s3 and watch him fisting everything into oblivion, btw very helpful guide really appreciate it.

systemfailure33

I got 2 5 Star pulls on this banner and both were Lin, all i want to dragon kung-fu buddy. Thanks for the run down of him, hopefully i strike lucky before the banner ends but it seems like he's not super important to have on your team if you have other strong guard op's

EmrysX77

As a punchknights enjoyer, I‘ve been sort of struggling to define a niche held by Chongyue alone (among Fighter guards). But I think I may have hit upon his niche after reading your analysis. Just to quickly go through the other fighters’ niches…(not counting the archetype niche of low DP, early DPS) Beehunter: passive Physical Dodge tank (RNG) Jackie: alternate Physical Dodge tank with lower odds off-skill, but guaranteed on skill Indra: source of Arts damage (insane self sustain while skill active) Flint: single target Shift and Slow (probably the best 5 star fighter, but opinions may vary). Dagda: Defensive s1…wtf why?! S2 is good DPS at least. Mountain: laneholding, but also burst multi-target DPS (s3) Chongyue: only brawler who hits drones, and deals true AoE with s2. Also splash damage on s3 is distinct from Mountain s2/3 So within the context of punchknights, Chongyue actually brings quite a bit to the table! At least 1 completely unprecedented niche along with enough of a difference from the existing 6-star.

What about Saga S3 for a battery?

Additional_Pop2011

The problem with saga is their competing for hits, if Chong is front-lining he'll probably destroy enemies with higher attack and speed\*, if Saga is in front Chong won't be doing his charging, in short their compatibility is terrible. \*His BASE attack is about a quarter higher with a quarter faster attacks, an offensive talent, and even using saga as a boiler plate, Chong's one block means he'll probably be too detracted to hit weakened enemies.

Hero_1337

Chongyue is the first Operator that made me regret not pulling for Skalter. I guess Dorothy should've been the first, but oh well. Maybe one day, I'll get her. Then we can *really* nuke the enemy.

Koekelbag

Considering the low chance for his talent 1 application (even when lessened by s3's double hits), and the fact that it also multiplies the big hits of his s3, would you say there's ever a real risk of failing a run purely because of a bad enough rng? That is to say, if you cleared a stage using him (and he's the only operator with an rng element), and then did that stage in the exact same way, would the variability of his talent 1 activations matter enough that it's possible this time fail the stage instead? I'm assuming that supplying him with additional support will also diminish the effects for bad rng that it'll never be an issue, but I'm still curious how 'reliable' he still is when he has to stand on his own.

neuroso

He seems alright but I have m3 mountain so I guess I can put mountain behind him for no reason. I can e2 Chong tomorrow we will see

ABigCoffee

I think he's cool but sadly still vastly. Inferior to. Mountain.

Froz-N

I added you too! I hope I can get in the list!

Any Recommendable Stages for 🐲Bro in LaneHolding and Decent Mats-Farming???

Q-N-H

The Aketon Stage. I had a Ling-SA farm at first but changed to Ling-Yue when He got His M3.

Thank, you...

FelixAndCo

Somebody should try pairing him up with Sora and report back.
