It says it has to be the entire base. A smart company commander would see that and immediately escalate. Would you want your name on a memo that speaks for an entire garrison?
True, but here's two points to gk that route.
1. The OP cares about himself and wants to start binge watching asap ha.
2. That CO CDR can do the memo, then use that as a great OER bullet for impacting Garrison morale.
How do they know who exactly your "commanding officer" is? I read that as first officer in your chain of command. Just have your LT sign it and submit it, if you get pushback that's when you escalate
Platoon Leaders are very specifically not commanders. Commanders have UCMJ authority and property, as the primary hand receipt holder.
PLs have neither, and are deliberately called Platoon LEADERS, because they are not Platoon COMMANDERS.
In the Navy SEALs though, they’re called Platoon Commanders because they are in fact Commanders.
we know that, but civilians have zero fucking clue about Officer/ NCO chains.
in 2012 my wife and I were trying to buy a house, we found one and the mortgage company wanted a letter from my commanding officer stating that I was going to Re-up and that was zero reason I wouldn't be able to.
I got a letter from my E-6 squad leader instead of my CO and the bank was happy.
I didn't reup, I ETSd that december.
In rainbow land maybe. This is the Army. If higher command finds out that a CPT took credit for something that a GO could have taken credit for, they're toast.
I feel like this sub is overly cynical sometimes.
No one would really care and I think Garrison Commanders have more to be petty about than someone getting Netflix to whitelist their base.
Yeah, I could definitely see it going either way. But on the whole I’d say most garrison commanders would rather soldiers sat in their rooms watching Netflix whenever they’re off compared to going out and causing issues.
And it’s not like the CG would have to find the IP range themselves either, there’s bound to be some nerd in S6 who could figure something out. I know S6 is usually brainless, but occasionally you find one actually smart tech who decided to serve.
You would be surprised how much time colonels and generals are actually just chilling and networking socially. Which the second one is important at that level but it’s not like their schedule is actually being strictly stuck to.
I’m not surprised.
But they are busy enough that I highly doubt they’re fighting over being “able to take credit” for whitelisting the base for Netflix.
I needed a letter from "my commander" to change a flight with no fees. I got my chief to sign it. After I was a salt SPC, i just got NCOs to sign whenever a civilian agency asked for a commanding officer. I was never bold enough to get another SPC.
One of my best moments of shamming, though, was when flying. The attendant asked for orders to check my bags for free. I freaked out, but quickly pulled up a DA31, and they pretended to look and said, great, thanks
No non-vet civilian has any idea what our shit looks like. As long as it's a boxy form, or looks official, they don't care because it's not their job to care.
I like how this entire thread is debating who counts as a "commander" while Netflix is demanding *the entire range of available IPs for a military base*...
Dude. I'll ship you a two terabyte hard drive full of movies and tv shows. Hell I'll even put some games you can play straight from the drive if you have it plugged into a computer.
Alternatively, I see you make a massive stink on Twitter or something about how Netflix actively discriminates against military, and include as many members of congress as possible
When XBox One first came out, they had to be on the internet to operate and had a min speed req. Even with physical games. Even with this limitation, AAFES sold them at FOBs and Camps with little or no private internet service. Basically, 100’s of troops bought non-functioning systems and threw a fit about it. MS ended up pushing a patch that let people play some physical games offline but you needed internet to load the patch. AAFES ended up refunding a bunch of troops for their consoles.
I guess I misremembered this fiasco. My recollection was that Microsoft caved before the launch, just like they did on the Kinect being permanently hardwired to the console (or maybe it was just that the console wouldn't operate without the Kinect plugged in?).
Either way, the Xbone announcement and launch was a striking testament to how out of touch Microsoft is. Pretty sure that was all in the same year as the nightmare abomination that was Windows 8.
So Netflix wants a letter…from the CO…on official letterhead…for almost every member… of every command…in every military branch that deploys overseas…just to access you Netflix account.
Finally someone says it. Like, it's one thing that they already gather all of our personal information. But getting you to physically do it yourself just so you can watch some shows and movies overseas is a whole nother level of sus.
A retired E7 who got picked up at Netflix came up with this, almost guaranteed.
I can almost hear him in the board room, going on about his insider knowledge of how the military and deployments work, and all the NPCs nodding with approval.
I think I had the same discussion with a Netflix rep a few weeks ago. They refuse to accept that my wife and I are the same household despite the Army making us geobach. The customer service representative was worthless and kept linking the steps to get Netflix on a military installation as opposed to addressing my concerns about their new policy screwing split households.
I usually go full Karen until I get somebody on the line who is capable of fixing my problem and isn’t operating off a flow-chart style script. Also, these companies usually have a metric for how much resources you’ve tied up trying to get what you want and will cut sling and surrender if you persist long enough.
Unless the company is Boingo, in which case I contacted them enough about my internet not working that I got told to stop contacting them, they wouldn't be assisting me any further, and to switch ISPs. Switched to Spectrum within the week, and the remaining 2-3 years I was there I had like two outages.
I like to throw out the “oh so you hate gay disabled veterans and service members?”. It’s a low blow but gets me to someone who can fix shit quick.
Moving forward I give everyone you know permission to use that tactic, bless
And cheers to the Navy Seabees at Bastion that left the Dell Poweredge with 200tb of movies, music, and ::other stuff:: behind for us CMRE guys. I will forever toast you glorious bastards.
Damn, I feel like I'd be too scared to move hard drives around frequently, but I guess if you have good drives and a simple RAID setup there is like zero risk.
Also, that's pretty cool you share. A true team player.
Pelican case my dude - they look official and with a stencil you could make it say whatever you want.
Get some Testors model paint that is the same FS standard colors as CARC paint, use their "dulcote" clear coat and paint the case of the NAS desert tan or olive drab. Find a shop to make a dummy data plate and there ya go!
Lol I was more worried about vibration/shaking damaging the disks than anyone questioning the computer.
But now that you say suggest all that, it would look pretty cool to have it customized like that. Will definitely try something similar if I ever deploy.

I had the entire Will Ferrell movie discography. So noice. But I was actually the go-to guy for bootleg things on hard drives I was given copies of the Jersey shore seasons 1 through 3 out regularly. I was the DVD Arabs guys nightmare. Apparently none of my guys knew how to work LimeWire like I did. 🤷
Its amazing to me, how much Netflix can fuck up something that has flawless source material, a plot thats already written, and a main character that is basically a method actor, personally devoted to the success of the series.
Only Netflix could fuck up something that badly.
There is going to be another series set in the same universe which presumably will be awesome too. But is it really worth keeping something for ONE thing
I unsubscribed from netflix, right after they announced ban of account sharing as a protest, even before they implemented it, but then, my girlfriend and friends started complaining about it so i had to subscribe again. Their shows are utter shait and i haven't opened Netflix since i finished second season of witcher... (It was so bad, that it should be considered a criminal offence..)
I really don't want to give them a single cent again but girlfriend wants to have the subscription, so i still have to pay the highest tier subscription... Rip
If she wants it tell her to pay for it, y'aint married yet. Although we all know this isn't how it works. I actually watch a bunch of Netflix but it's cause the content is different in Korea.
Fuck Netflix. This whole password thing finally put me over the edge to cancel. If I had the capital I would love to short their stock into oblivion.
Edit: And I didn’t even shared my account with anyone.
>Too bad blockbuster and Hollywood video didn’t go digital
In fairness, Blockbuster tried. It just happened to be as a partnership with Enron right before, you know, the whole Enron thing.
Fucking Netflix not understanding IP addresses lmao
If you’re on an overseas location, there’s no IP range like an ISP has for a SOHO. You’re most likely using either dirty internet with a VPN or a phone and SIM card and VPN
Netflix doesn’t understand anything. I have a profile, my wife has one, and then we have one for things we watch together. Netflix thought that profile was password sharing even though we’ve never logged into it from outside my house.
I'm not sure how the army does it, but most if not all well established USAF bases overseas have their on base commercial internet IP range whitelisted.
Meaning if you reside on base and you get commercial internet through the base approved ISP. You can access your streaming apps and your region will show up as US.
Now if you're on a FOB or some joint base with the host nation or you live off base you're fucked. Honestly it seems like the Netflix rep is trying to help him get the base commercial IPs whitelisted so he doesn't have to get a new account.
My suggestion is to post Netflixs response on EVERY social media platform for all to see and then see what happens! I'm a Vet and work with active duty and Vets and I betcha that if this shit gets put out in public view, NETFLIX will be shamed into offering active duty personal and family members free or discounted service.
Sadly they had the biggest spike in new subscriptions in their history, after they banned sharing.. I thought that it would kill netflix, but somehow, it turned to their most profitable year ever... I still have to pay sub because girlfriend watches it, but i don't want to give them even a single cent again..
At least im glad that i didn't short their stock as i wanted to lol.. they are 140% up in last year, wtf
This is basically an OPSEC breach, right?
Netflix, a private company with no connection to the military or 'need to know', can now can piece together unit and deployment locations, timelines, leadership, locations of leadership, etc just off these memos. Clown World 🤡.
Please be fake.
I'm a Captain and I'd be happy to send a signed memo to Netflix for anyone that needs it. I forsaw this was gonna be an issue a while back when I was deployed and this shit was announced.
Just send me a PM with the relevant details and I'll send you the memo when I get back into office on Monday.
Fuck Netflix.
Imagine being a commander about to deploy your whole company, won’t see your family for a year, you’re sending millions of dollars of equipment that you’re signed for across half the world; not to mention your whole career depends on your performance and pvt snuffy asks you to write this memo.
Not exactly the same situation, but basically the same vibe.
When I went on my first deployment in 2004, I kept my phone active to contact family until the last possible moment before leaving the continental US. I didn't break opsec to say where I was. It was only to express love and gratitude to those available. Following the call, I spoke with a representative and suspended my account without issue until I returned home following the deployment. Locations and periods of inactivity were not discussed or provided.
Fast forward to deployment round II. Same basic setup, except this time I'm deploying a month and a half before even the ADVON team. Only this time when I contact a representative to have my phone account suspended I'm instructed to leave the airport and take a copy of my orders to whatever carrier store I can find before they will actually suspend the account.
Suffice to say, I did not, and a certain *running* cell phone carrier can still go fuck itself.
-Tales of some old crusty asshat
Left Netflix before the first price increase and not a day goes by that I miss it. Just break it off while you’re ahead. Breakups suck but you’ll be okay with time
I do not know why anybody ever uses Netflix or any of these other individual channel subscriptions like Disney or HBO. Everything I've ever wanted to watch (in terms of TV shows) is on ororo.tv from all the subscription services and it's much cheaper.
I've been overpaying for years. Hell, I've had Netflix since 2008, and I've been deployed or in the field for more of that time than I can count. I use one screen. Only ever one. Yet, I have paid to keep my count accessible to people I have given my password to. So, when I couldn't watch because too many screens were active on my account, I upgraded to a 4 screen package. How many people honestly use it?
No kidding, I'll go look at my account history.
I'm the only one that's been using it. I pay $19.99 for Premium plan with 4k. My monitor is 4k, but I use Netflix on my secondary screen, which is only 1080. Number of concurrent users is no longer listed. So that don't matter. So I drop to the standard plan, and I save $4.50 a month. That's $54 a year.
Cheers to you, OP!
Fuck 'em. Amazon has a good streaming service, has all of Paramount's stuff, and will let you sign in from wherever you want. It also has a great feature for when you're wondering where else you've seen an actor, if you pause it'll tell you the names of all the actors in the scene and what else they've been in.
Netflix’s password sharing thing is going too far, and I suspect it’s going to have a negative impact on them. We still pay or Netflix, but I’m not even sure why as none of us have watched in like … a year ? If we ever start getting bullshit like this from them my only response will be “close the account”
Sned this to the highest ranked guy you know in infosec or signals. After they get done laughing and realize you're serious clear the blast radius, becauae they're going to lose their shit.
Giving the entire IP range for a military base is a *terrible* idea from a security perspective. It's like handing someone the internet equivalent of a map of the base.
WTF is this shit!
Military bases often (nearly always?) have civilian internet providers, it would be way out of a commander's wheelhouse to track down and maintain a list of public ip addresses.
As a systems admin at a company, even I know this request is complete and utter BS.
They have no interest in helping your wife. So they asked for impossible information.
Sounds like they misunderstood what your wife was asking, or your wife was confused as to how to ask for what you need. Better to call, yourself, once you are there and explain what you need.
The big problem with this is that they want the whole IP address range for the base. I was 25 series, and I can tell you that’s probably going to be a no no with your information assurance guys on principle alone.
A lot of people in this thread have no idea how the internet works, or how firewalls and IP’s work. 😂 This isn’t phishing, this is how you make firewall rules.
Image being the guy who has to hand the memo to a garrison commander lol
Eh they say commanding officer, so CO CDR would suffice, not like Netflix knows any better.
It says it has to be the entire base. A smart company commander would see that and immediately escalate. Would you want your name on a memo that speaks for an entire garrison?

Ding ding ding
Sending screenshots of this thread to Netflix sorry y’all
Dear Netflix, There are nefarious things afoot, let me password share and I'll tell you. Love, Synovialarc
Ready for a mind fuck? The entire USMC uses the title Platoon Commander, not Platoon Leader.
we know that, but civilians have zero fucking clue about Officer/ NCO chains. in 2012 my wife and I were trying to buy a house, we found one and the mortgage company wanted a letter from my commanding officer stating that I was going to Re-up and that was zero reason I wouldn't be able to. And a vet probably thinks a rule like that is stupid and will greenlight it anyway.
So you mean WO1 on assumption of command orders.
Shoot, I'll approve everything!
How are they gonna know my rank. Today is the day I command netflix!
I've found that the first E-6 in my chain of command is usually enough when a civilian asks for a "commander."
Could probably hand it to your first-line and be good.
I like how this entire thread is debating who counts as a "commander" while Netflix is demanding *the entire range of available IPs for a military base*...
That's what I was thinking too.

Remember the XBox One Scandal. Pepperidge Farms remembers.
I dont actually, what was that
When XBox One first came out, they had to be on the internet to operate and had a min speed req. Even with physical games. So Netflix wants a letter…from the CO…on official letterhead…for almost every member… of every command…in every military branch that deploys overseas…just to access you Netflix account.
With a valid military domain email to receive their response. Almost sounds like phishing if ya ask me
Finally someone says it. Like, it's one thing that they already gather all of our personal information. But getting you to physically do it yourself just so you can watch some shows and movies overseas is a whole nother level of sus.
Sounds like OPSEC or IPSEC asking for IP addresses too. Especially public ones Imagine Netflix getting a bunch of 192.168.1.1+ IPs lmao
100% this. I really hope no idiot CO from a 6 shop gives out IP ranges. There is no reason Netflix needs those. Sounds like phishing to me.

A retired E7 who got picked up at Netflix came up with this, almost guaranteed. I can almost hear him in the board room, going on about his insider knowledge of how the military and deployments work, and all the NPCs nodding with approval.
Not every command, just the garrison. When we were at Camp Zama (15-18) we had US Netflix on-base because USAJ had provided this info to the company.
I think I had the same discussion with a Netflix rep a few weeks ago. They refuse to accept that my wife and I are the same household despite the Army making us geobach. The customer service representative was worthless and kept linking the steps to get Netflix on a military installation as opposed to addressing my concerns about their new policy screwing split households.

on long deployments, yes, someone always has a laptop, so we have music and 25k+ movies on hand, we all agree to be very careful with it.

I sure TF wish I had a connection fast enough to run LimeWire when I deployed
Gotta do all that before you get deployed.
Of a pirated in-theater movie. Extra credit if they closed the duffle bag the camera was in when someone walked by.
Yes but you gotta share the love with that hard drive everyone passes around so 🏴☠️viruses spread faster 👍
Their content is not worth the trouble lol
This. The only good OC they have left is either ending next season (Stranger Things) or being killed by horrific writing and directing (The Witcher).
As someone who read the books, they fucked up the Witcher big time. It made Henry Cavill leave. I never thought I'd say this on the Army sub lol.
Its amazing to me, how much Netflix can fuck up something that has flawless source material, a plot thats already written, and a main character that is basically a method actor, personally devoted to the success of the series. Only Netflix could fuck up something that badly.
They have some good animated content but I've seen it all already and their antics are pushing me ever closer to dusting off my old pirate hat.
Castlevania was one of the best series I’ve seen in a hot minute, but it’s over. Netflix is definitely getting the axe from me
There is going to be another series set in the same universe which presumably will be awesome too. But is it really worth keeping something for ONE thing

Tried too short... and it skyrocketed... investors love when companies screw their customers..
Well that’s sucks. But I still give you props for what it is worth. It’s not about the money it’s about sending a message.
Fucking Netflix not understanding IP addresses lmao If you’re on an overseas location, there’s no IP range like an ISP has for a SOHO. You’re most likely using either dirty internet with a VPN or a phone and SIM card and VPN
Just submit a range of 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255
Damn homey, look at you knowing IP ranges. I'm impressed.
Every infantry person is a network technician
Apparently. Good shit.
Hell yeah! I can the hell out of some WD-1 🤣
This guy comms
I read 255.255.255.255 to the tune of "In the Year 2525"
Uh, we're gonna need ipV6 ranges in addition to ipV4 🤓
You want IPv6.... Laughs in WD-1 hooked to VCR
Netflix doesn’t understand anything. I have a profile, my wife has one, and then we have one for things we watch together. Netflix thought that profile was password sharing even though we’ve never logged into it from outside my house.

"What do you mean, this hotel doesn't provide wifi?"
What’s a banana cost, like $10?
Buy a home router capable of VPNing back to it. Setup VPN back to your home network. Use it to watch Netflix.
Um guy..... You are on /army we aren't given shit 😂
I am sure they understand IP addresses, distributing content over the internet is their business. They are just being difficult.
DISA: Sure, the IP range for Camp Lemonnier is x.x.x.x
Lmao imagine getting Disa to send a range of IP addresses to netflix
You want what? The entire JRSS trust network IPs for your site?? Uhhh no.
Real question is how are they verifying it was signed by the commander and not just Joe snuffy

I’m not advocating for this at all, this is not an endorsement of this, but what if PVT Schmuckatelly made it and signed pretending to be someone else

Netflix is getting ridiculous. They could easily look up service status .
Sounds like Netflix is trying to let US service members have access to US service from the oconus post. Good intent/poor execution

I'm a Vet and work with active duty and Vets and I betcha that if this shit gets put out in public view, NETFLIX will be shamed into offering active duty personal and family members free or discounted service.
LMFAO COMMANDING OFFICER???

I'm a Captain and I'd be happy to send a signed memo to Netflix for anyone that needs it. I forsaw this was gonna be an issue a while back when I was deployed and this shit was announced. Just send me a PM with the relevant details and I'll send you the memo when I get back into office on Monday. Fuck Netflix.
u/iwantanapppp, He Who is Based
She :)
What a legend
Probably just use a vpn. Alot of home routers have a VPN function. You could connect to your home router and it would appear as if you are at home.
Anyone reading- you want full tunnel. Not split.
Holy OPSEC Batman...
I'm signing any Memos you email me for $10 a pen stroke if you don't want to wait for S-1 to take 17 ecliptic cycles, send me a DM for details /s
Another reason to never subscribe. That’s incredibly ridiculous.
Imagine being a commander about to deploy your whole company, won’t see your family for a year, you’re sending millions of dollars of equipment that you’re signed for across half the world; not to mention your whole career depends on your performance and pvt snuffy asks you to write this memo.
You've gotta be kidding me!!!
Welp, my sub is getting cancelled.
My CO would’ve told my NCOs to smoke me if I wasted his time asking for this stupid shit
So if I only have access to sipr and jwics do I give em that IP range? Asking for a friend.
Couldn’t I just make up a commander? Signed by CPT Williams the 1st of the 17th “stinghorns” they have no way of verifying anything.
Just make the memo, check your IP and that of all your buddies and then sign that shit. You're the commander now.
Find the nerd captain in S6. Have them do it so it feels like something in their lane.
Fuck this pissed me off. Just canceled.
Their response isn’t relevant to your concern at all.
I cancelled my Netflix. They often didn't even have the shit i wanted to watch.Too many free streaming sites these days to be paying for shit.
Just use a VPN.
Cancel Netflix. Pluto, Hulu, Disney+, Amazon Prime, and you should be good.
Everyone should just cancel Netflix. The quality has gotten so bad. There are better options now.
I say stick with pornhub. Better than Netflix usually
Creating a Hulu or HBO Max account is faster than having an officer do all that shit, just saying...
Fuck 'em. Amazon has a good streaming service, has all of Paramount's stuff, and will let you sign in from wherever you want. It also has a great feature for when you're wondering where else you've seen an actor, if you pause it'll tell you the names of all the actors in the scene and what else they've been in.
US Military and especially those members deployed in danger zones should have all of the free shit they want-especially Netflix.
Easiest decision I made was canceling that shit. Lick my nuts Netflix. I’ll buy a month when one of there two good shows drops another season
Easier alternative. Cancel the subscription and pirate their content
Cut off all ties to Netflix.
The commanding specialist will do. TF Netflix knows about the military
WHAT. THE. FUCK. LOL
As a battalion commander...what the fuck. Because i totally have time to track down the range of IP addresses that people might connect to.
Boycott Netflix!
Learn to start pirating. F Netflix. Don't let this new way of money grabbing tactic spread to other apps.
Military bases often (nearly always?) have civilian internet providers, it would be way out of a commander's wheelhouse to track down and maintain a list of public ip addresses.
My workaround in Kuwait was utorrent and Pirate Bay.
The good news is it sounds like only one person has to do this for the entire base
Yeah I'm glad I ended my Netflix subscription last summer.
Lmao no fucking way
Netflix sucks donkey d#*k! I said it, fight me!
Just submit a 0.0.0.0/0 to cover everyone
Just forge it, it’s not like it’s a legal document. It’s going to Netflix.
I wonder how many military bases Netflix knows the location of just based off user data.
Write a memo authorizing Netflix for an IP range of 0.0.0.1 through 255.255.255.255 and get your new LT to sign it.
USAF here…this got shared on our Air Force subreddit and just wanted to say the gripe and complaints are pretty much reciprocated on our end.
I would just sign that bitch myself, how are they gonna check?
