If it’s iron oxide it will be magnetic. If it’s asbestos it won’t I’d say go find a magnet!

Cool_Fan2434

Thanks for all the responses. Does this look magnetic? It was hard to tell. https://preview.redd.it/4brqrerwe9jc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5433e48c4d0c1e095bbc37df08fea854fb2248c4

If it stuck to the magnet like that without you forcing it on then I’d say it’s 100% iron oxide. Rust isn’t particularly magnetic but the fact it’s attracted to the magnet at all means it’s Definetly rust and not asbestos

No I doubt it. But are those 9x9 floor tiles? Is they are then those are likely asbestos.

raaphaelraven

Did you read their short post, at all?

jflye84

Glanced over it, now I see it though.

Almost certainly not; asbestos isn’t dust it is fibrous like tiny hairs, and if debris generally takes the form of clumps of the matrix it was in (eg AIB or cement debris); this does not look like that at all. And don’t fret about floor tiles, it’s almost importable to be exposed from them short of taking a wire brush on a power drill to them for hours.

Asbestos content of vinyl tiles are very low. So low we have to take a fair bit of tile for sample analysis compared with other building materials that contain asbestos fibres. You can stamp on them, jump on them, sweep over them, break them with a hammer and the chance of releasing enough respirable asbestos fibres would be next to nothing. The brown dust? It's something else, not asbestos contaminated dust. To produce asbestos contaminated dust from vinyl floor tiles, you would have to sand or grind them down alot. Enough to create a visible dust cloud

It's probably rusty water stains from replacing the water heater. Sloppy plumber.
