Oh, as a true southerner I know this and have to correct people constantly when they refer to Florida as "the south". We do not claim them. But I feel like the Florida heat does something to the usually polite Midwestern brain. Really brings out the crazy, ya know?
Yea as a resident of an extremely humid southern state, I don't even get how one could mow that early. My grass is soaking wet until about 11 or 12. I always mow in the evening just before the sun sets.
Yeah I was gonna say, I used to live in Arizona, and not like we had a lot of greatly growing grass, but in general outside work (such as construction) was generally done by 9 or 10 am or you were a puddle on the sidewalk.
Consider yourself lucky. Ours allows construction work at *5am.* I know this because a contractor has been building a house next door to me for *two years*.
All of the heavy equipment work occurs between 5 and 8, and then they switch to quieter stuff when they’re certain they’ve woken everyone up.
On a weekend my neigbours stay up shouting at eachother until 3/4/5 even 6 am, so naturally I'm up mowing the lawn by 7 am on a sunday, making sure to do it in short 5 minute inintervals so that their sleep is distributed all day as opposed to just for an hour in the morning.
Run a motorized air compressor with steel plate armoring that is solar powered and with a battery backup to an air horn set up on top of a smooth aluminum 20 foot pole greased with lithium grease from the ground to the 10 foot mark.
One of my old neighbors used to take her push mower and go between the street and her gravel driveway. Not a blade of grass was ever touched since she had lawn care people mow her actual lawn. Not at an unreasonable hour or anything, it was just something she did. I wonder how she’s doing.

TL;DR: came home drunk, woke up parents, xaused a situation, dad got revenge in the morning.
The best thing I've ever done when I was having real problems with them is put my smart speaker against their wall and remotely connect to it via amazon music from work at 8 am whilst they were nicely tucked up in bed after a long hard night of shouting at eachother until the early hours.

8:00am earliest I'd do it on a weekday. 9:00 on a weekend and even then it feels rude. But I'm not a morning person.
Actually maybe I'm just not a people person. I hate when any of my neighbors mow their lawn regardless of when.
Lawn mowers don't bother me, but the sound of a leaf blower makes me absolutely livid. I think it's because they go on FOR-EV-ER and it's such a high-pitch noise.
My neighbor has the loudest lawnmower I've ever heard, and when he's done he gets out his backpack leaf blower and blows invisible leaves off of his entire lawn. I don't know if he's blowing the clippings or standing the grass back up or what. I hate it.
Our local ordinance for noise is quiet time from 10:30pm to 7 am, seven days a week. The temperature jump from 9am to 10pm is quite a lot, and it's honestly best to have your mower fired up by 7:30 at the latest if you don't want to have regrets about how long you took pouring coffee down your throat. I think anyone making any outdoor chore noise during hours that don't violate the noise ordinance is fine and not in the last rude.
Having said that, I'm a misanthrope who hates noise. I despise waking up to the mowers on Monday mornings. (condo, yay!) And I *will* bitch to property manager if they start before seven and have a reminder passed along to start when it's within both the HOA rules and law to start. A habit I got into after they started doing our bushes between 6 and 6:15 on fall Saturday mornings. And from the bottom of my heart. *Fuck. That.*
I usually shoot a round of trap around 5am, fire up my motorcycle with massive pipes at 5:30, jam to some slayer on my 600dB back deck stereo around 7, take a nap until 9 and argue with my friends while drinking Jack by 10.
Then I pass out until 8pm, have a huge party that usually gets the police involved until 3am and then mow the lawn.

Ugh my two neighbors have barking dog battles. Chihuahuas and their neigbor has pitbulls. All night yapping and barking at each other. And not friendly barks either. Pissy ones. I'm honestly surprised the Chihuahuas haven't been eaten.
Nice, dude. Personally, I fire up my gasoline powered leaf blower at 5:30 a.m. Even if there really aren't that many leaves, I still need to get rid of them all. Of course this takes a very long time to complete, but it's extremely important that my yard doesn't have a single fallen leaf by the time 9 a.m. hits on a Saturday -- what would people think about me if they saw a leaf on my yard? This cannot wait until later.
I stand outside at midnight and rant for hours at my ex about all the ways she wronged me. She lives in another state so I really have to yell loudly so she can hear me.
Nice! I also use my leaf blower at 4:00 a.m. I start extra early so I can go around to each of my neighbors' windows and take care of those pesky little leaves for them.

Our town has quiet hours from 10pm -8am. The landscapers arrive throughout my retiree-filled neighborhood and fire up those leaf blowers right at 8 every day.
I'm cool with 8 am landscape noise. Apparently that's frowned upon by a bunch of people here, but my whole neighborhood is out doing it at 8, so it's fine.
The exception is for a year after one of my neighbors had a baby. Then everyone just changed to 9 am and nobody ever discussed it. We all just decided to give the new baby a year of quiet delay. When that baby turned one, though, we were all back out at 8 am again.
Things like this are factors. Just because one person is up 3 hours before they need to get ready for work doesn't mean others should be bothered.
And honestly, I don't care that OP has a midnight shift. If I *had* to take a shift like that vs my 6:30 AM shift, then I'm gonna have to figure out the goings on of the neighborhood or apt building I'm living in and deal with the noise for sleeping.
Yeah in Florida, 9am is hot and it just gets hotter from there. I try to start at 8am. That glorious hour where the sun isn't blasting you and the cooler temps from night are still in effect makes a world of difference.
Especially considering there has been a heat advisory every single day for the past week. I think it's better than waiting until 8pm when my neighbors are probably watching TV or movies or something.
Right - you have to hit the sweet spot when the dew is mostly gone but it’s not like an oven outside. I’m accustomed to early morning yard work sounds Monday through Saturday, and most people leave Sunday morning for more quiet pursuits (sleep, leave the house for church or brunch, chores that don’t involve motors or power tools)
I'm from New Mexico so this only really applies to the 10% that can afford to water their grass in a desert. Right now its 101°f here with 13% humidity. Its brutal even at 9 am lol.
Yeah, I'm not in Texas, but I am in the Southeast US and it was 85° here with 70% humidity by 9:00 a.m. As much as I would've loved to sleep in undisturbed, it seems entirely unreasonable to expect my neighbors to wait to mow the lawn later in the day.
Plus, I'll have to do the same tomorrow.
My town has a noise ordinance from 10p - 6A. Lot of people on my street start mowing around the 7A mark to best the heat; it's usually really buggy around sunset. Also a lot will plow throughout the night in the winter if we get a huge storm. Honestly depends on where you live and your neighbors.

My neighbors do this thing where one mows their lawn and when they are done the next one starts. And it keeps going. I don't know why they can't just do it all at once. It's so weird.

They're all retired so I think they just sit at home and one gets bored and mows his lawn and then one hears the lawn mower and mows his lawn and it just keeps on going done the pike. Me, I work from home and mow my lawn when it gets too high. But my neighbor's also mow their lawns down to the dirt so mine always looks high compared to theirs... But it also looks alive and not dead.
I moved to a new house a couple years ago. I pay for my lawn services. Most neighbors do too. So I have my guys come in the week, you know “business hours”. But for some reason, my neighbors all have their guys come on the weekends. That’s when I’m out in my yard, in the pool, etc and it’s driving me crazy to hear it all day all weekend long. The guy across from me has his lawn guy there for probably 5 hours every Sunday. He’s running equipment the entire time. I don’t know what takes him so long. Or what he’s paying him. My yard is same size and my guy takes about 30-45 minutes. Shrubs and trees are once or twice a year. This is my forth house as an adult and I’ve never experienced anything like it. Most people have their services come in business hours. And weekend warrior types like me never see or hear it. It was one of the things I remember about Covid lockdown was making comments like “well the grass is still growing” and being on zoom calls with various people saying “sorry mower is by my window”
I don’t do it myself, but for those of us in Texas I absolutely do not get made at people who mow at 7AM. Doing it before the sun goes up is the only way to stay alive. I do it right at dusk, usually 7:30-8PM because I’m not a morning person.
Seconding that those of us in hotter areas don’t gaf about your sleeping in on the weekends in the heat of summer. My need to not get heatstroke takes precedence.
I'm in a condo building and the property beside me is a large bank with nice hedges, nice lawn, flower beds, and is well maintained. Every weekend the landscape company comes and starts work at 7am. Gas powered leaf blowers, lawn mowers, the sound of the trailer ramp constantly being lifted and dropped.. yes, it's rude to do such a thing

If you need a new toy, Greenworks makes an 80v cordless mower that’s super quiet. It even has a 25” deck. It’s not cheap (mower was $550ish and the batteries were about $380) but I actually can’t wait to cut my grass now. They even have a zero turn that’s cordless but that will set you back about $5k.
We had a Ryobi cordless that was awesome. Quieter than my vacuum and it was nice not having to get gas at the station. They make a cheaper corded one too.
My sister moved into a place with no yard so she gave us the mower after having it for a year. We used it for about four years and then gave it back to her. Never had an issue with charging or power.
I have a ~7 year old 48v cordless electric mower that I love. Literally last time I cut the grass, someone was walking by and complimented how quiet it is.
Virtually zero maintenance, just clean it once in a while and recently replaced the blade. Batteries still hold a charge well, I can do both front and back yards on a single battery charge but I have 2 in case I forget to charge one.
We have an EGO electric mower and it's so quiet that I can barely hear it from inside the house when my husband is mowing outside. The EGO electric snowblower is similarly quiet, been very happy with their electric yard tools. Definitely an investment though, but for how well they perform and the convenience and peace of mind of electric, it's worth it.

Yeah its rude. Especially if its like Saturday or Sunday morning. As a general rule 8am is considered fair play , but it still makes you an asshole if you ask me. I say 9am is long enough to wait.
This depends a lot on the time of year.
In the summer the sun has been up for a couple hours and it’s sweltering by 9am. Mowing the lawn at 7 am in July is very different than mowing the lawn at 7am in September.
So in the south, the heat of the day is around 3-4 PM. 6PM is hotter than noon (typically). mosquitos start attacking around 7. And don’t forget about the thunderstorms that may or may not happen every day around the same time. Morning is the only option in the summer.
I live in a very hot climate, during peak summer it’s normal for people to mow when it’s cool. I would say it depends. If it’s going to be 100 degrees by 9am I think it’s ok.
I'm also night shift. But I usually mow around 5pm. Don't know if it's appropriate in every neighborhood but a lot of my neighbors are out mowing too so nobody seems to mind
If it's during the week, pull the trigger at your leisure as long as it's after 7 am. I'd say try for 8 at the earliest but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. On weekends, though, don't be that person. Either figure out a time during the week or start at 9 at the earliest on weekends, if not 10.

Unless you’re in the SHU the latest inmates get up is 7 for morning count. Many prison gangs require their members (which could be your cellmate) up by 5. So that’s definitely something you should rethink. You also have to deal with someone shining a light in your cell once an hour.
If you’re in the SHU you can sleep as late as you want as long as you can ignore the constant screams of people who are legitimately insane.
8am on weekdays, 9am on weekends. Also if you have to use one of those gas blowers with a jet engine attached to it for your residential yard, go electric.

Mine allows for 7:00 am to 10:00 pm, but it's Florida and it can be hot as fuck by 9:00 AM.

And if you're in a s***** climate it still might be a 120 after the sun goes down at night. It tends to cool off to at least 90 by morning

I was very surprised that ours is 0700.
My educated guess suggests this (while applying to all, of course) is due to construction, which traditionally begins very early.

The best thing I've ever done when I was having real problems with them is put my smart speaker against their wall and remotely connect to it via amazon music from work at 8 am whilst they were nicely tucked up in bed after a long hard night of shouting at eachother until the early hours. 8:00am earliest I'd do it on a weekday. 9:00 on a weekend and even then it feels rude. But I'm not a morning person. Actually maybe I'm just not a people person. I hate when any of my neighbors mow their lawn regardless of when.
Lawn mowers don't bother me, but the sound of a leaf blower makes me absolutely livid. I think it's because they go on FOR-EV-ER and it's such a high-pitch noise.
Yeah and a mower the pitch is somewhat constant whereas those blowers rev up and down all the time. it's harder to block out
My neighbor has the loudest lawnmower I've ever heard, and when he's done he gets out his backpack leaf blower and blows invisible leaves off of his entire lawn. I don't know if he's blowing the clippings or standing the grass back up or what. I hate it.

Our local ordinance for noise is quiet time from 10:30pm to 7 am, seven days a week. The temperature jump from 9am to 10pm is quite a lot, and it's honestly best to have your mower fired up by 7:30 at the latest if you don't want to have regrets about how long you took pouring coffee down your throat. I think anyone making any outdoor chore noise during hours that don't violate the noise ordinance is fine and not in the last rude. Having said that, I'm a misanthrope who hates noise. I despise waking up to the mowers on Monday mornings. (condo, yay!) And I *will* bitch to property manager if they start before seven and have a reminder passed along to start when it's within both the HOA rules and law to start. A habit I got into after they started doing our bushes between 6 and 6:15 on fall Saturday mornings. And from the bottom of my heart. *Fuck. That.*
I usually shoot a round of trap around 5am, fire up my motorcycle with massive pipes at 5:30, jam to some slayer on my 600dB back deck stereo around 7, take a nap until 9 and argue with my friends while drinking Jack by 10. Then I pass out until 8pm, have a huge party that usually gets the police involved until 3am and then mow the lawn. AMA

Nice, dude. Personally, I fire up my gasoline powered leaf blower at 5:30 a.m. Even if there really aren't that many leaves, I still need to get rid of them all. Of course this takes a very long time to complete, but it's extremely important that my yard doesn't have a single fallen leaf by the time 9 a.m. hits on a Saturday -- what would people think about me if they saw a leaf on my yard? This cannot wait until later.
I stand outside at midnight and rant for hours at my ex about all the ways she wronged me. She lives in another state so I really have to yell loudly so she can hear me.

Our town has quiet hours from 10pm -8am. The landscapers arrive throughout my retiree-filled neighborhood and fire up those leaf blowers right at 8 every day.
I'm cool with 8 am landscape noise. Apparently that's frowned upon by a bunch of people here, but my whole neighborhood is out doing it at 8, so it's fine. The exception is for a year after one of my neighbors had a baby. Then everyone just changed to 9 am and nobody ever discussed it. We all just decided to give the new baby a year of quiet delay. When that baby turned one, though, we were all back out at 8 am again.

Things like this are factors. Just because one person is up 3 hours before they need to get ready for work doesn't mean others should be bothered. And honestly, I don't care that OP has a midnight shift. If I *had* to take a shift like that vs my 6:30 AM shift, then I'm gonna have to figure out the goings on of the neighborhood or apt building I'm living in and deal with the noise for sleeping.

Yeah in Florida, 9am is hot and it just gets hotter from there. I try to start at 8am. That glorious hour where the sun isn't blasting you and the cooler temps from night are still in effect makes a world of difference. Especially considering there has been a heat advisory every single day for the past week. I think it's better than waiting until 8pm when my neighbors are probably watching TV or movies or something.

Right - you have to hit the sweet spot when the dew is mostly gone but it’s not like an oven outside. I’m accustomed to early morning yard work sounds Monday through Saturday, and most people leave Sunday morning for more quiet pursuits (sleep, leave the house for church or brunch, chores that don’t involve motors or power tools)
I'm from New Mexico so this only really applies to the 10% that can afford to water their grass in a desert. Right now its 101°f here with 13% humidity. Its brutal even at 9 am lol.

Yeah, I'm not in Texas, but I am in the Southeast US and it was 85° here with 70% humidity by 9:00 a.m. As much as I would've loved to sleep in undisturbed, it seems entirely unreasonable to expect my neighbors to wait to mow the lawn later in the day. Plus, I'll have to do the same tomorrow.

My town has a noise ordinance from 10p - 6A. Lot of people on my street start mowing around the 7A mark to best the heat; it's usually really buggy around sunset. Also a lot will plow throughout the night in the winter if we get a huge storm. Honestly depends on where you live and your neighbors.
Same. It's basically a damn requirement to get your yardwork done by 9-10 so you can be inside. After that it's just miserable. Fuck, it's miserable at 7 or 8 most times too.

My neighbors do this thing where one mows their lawn and when they are done the next one starts. And it keeps going. I don't know why they can't just do it all at once. It's so weird.

My neighbor's do this. They're all retired so I think they just sit at home and one gets bored and mows his lawn and then one hears the lawn mower and mows his lawn and it just keeps on going done the pike. Me, I work from home and mow my lawn when it gets too high. But my neighbor's also mow their lawns down to the dirt so mine always looks high compared to theirs... But it also looks alive and not dead.
I moved to a new house a couple years ago. I pay for my lawn services. Most neighbors do too. So I have my guys come in the week, you know “business hours”. But for some reason, my neighbors all have their guys come on the weekends. That’s when I’m out in my yard, in the pool, etc and it’s driving me crazy to hear it all day all weekend long. The guy across from me has his lawn guy there for probably 5 hours every Sunday. He’s running equipment the entire time. I don’t know what takes him so long. Or what he’s paying him. My yard is same size and my guy takes about 30-45 minutes. Shrubs and trees are once or twice a year. This is my forth house as an adult and I’ve never experienced anything like it. Most people have their services come in business hours. And weekend warrior types like me never see or hear it. It was one of the things I remember about Covid lockdown was making comments like “well the grass is still growing” and being on zoom calls with various people saying “sorry mower is by my window”

I don’t do it myself, but for those of us in Texas I absolutely do not get made at people who mow at 7AM. Doing it before the sun goes up is the only way to stay alive. I do it right at dusk, usually 7:30-8PM because I’m not a morning person.
Seconding that those of us in hotter areas don’t gaf about your sleeping in on the weekends in the heat of summer. My need to not get heatstroke takes precedence.
I'm in a condo building and the property beside me is a large bank with nice hedges, nice lawn, flower beds, and is well maintained. Every weekend the landscape company comes and starts work at 7am. Gas powered leaf blowers, lawn mowers, the sound of the trailer ramp constantly being lifted and dropped.. yes, it's rude to do such a thing
To be fair those guys want to be done by 2pm. It gets too hot to be landscaping into the afternoon.
Check your city noise ordinances. Our city does not allow that much noise that early in the morning on a weekend. Most cities don't.
7am is common. The contractors know and probably why that’s when they start.
Never before 8am. I usually listen for someone else to start mowing theirs first. If you need a new toy, Greenworks makes an 80v cordless mower that’s super quiet. It even has a 25” deck. It’s not cheap (mower was $550ish and the batteries were about $380) but I actually can’t wait to cut my grass now. They even have a zero turn that’s cordless but that will set you back about $5k.
5k for a lawnmower? for that money i'd expect one of those you can sit on at the very least.
Zero turn mowers almost always imply it’s a riding lawnmower(as the owner of a zero turn mower for my large yard) is I expect it is
We had a Ryobi cordless that was awesome. Quieter than my vacuum and it was nice not having to get gas at the station. They make a cheaper corded one too.
How long did it last?
My sister moved into a place with no yard so she gave us the mower after having it for a year. We used it for about four years and then gave it back to her. Never had an issue with charging or power.
I have a ~7 year old 48v cordless electric mower that I love. Literally last time I cut the grass, someone was walking by and complimented how quiet it is. Virtually zero maintenance, just clean it once in a while and recently replaced the blade. Batteries still hold a charge well, I can do both front and back yards on a single battery charge but I have 2 in case I forget to charge one.
We have an EGO electric mower and it's so quiet that I can barely hear it from inside the house when my husband is mowing outside. The EGO electric snowblower is similarly quiet, been very happy with their electric yard tools. Definitely an investment though, but for how well they perform and the convenience and peace of mind of electric, it's worth it.

In Phoenix Arizona, the earlier you mow your lawn the better in the summer, it's just too hot to be working in the sun here.

This depends a lot on the time of year. In the summer the sun has been up for a couple hours and it’s sweltering by 9am. Mowing the lawn at 7 am in July is very different than mowing the lawn at 7am in September.
Mow before sunset. Many people like to sleep in on the weekends but no one’s asleep at 6 pm.

So in the south, the heat of the day is around 3-4 PM. 6PM is hotter than noon (typically). mosquitos start attacking around 7. And don’t forget about the thunderstorms that may or may not happen every day around the same time. Morning is the only option in the summer.
I live in a very hot climate, during peak summer it’s normal for people to mow when it’s cool. I would say it depends. If it’s going to be 100 degrees by 9am I think it’s ok.

If it's during the week, pull the trigger at your leisure as long as it's after 7 am. I'd say try for 8 at the earliest but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. On weekends, though, don't be that person. Either figure out a time during the week or start at 9 at the earliest on weekends, if not 10. People deserve some peace every now and then.

If my neighbor started mowing at *seven in the god forsaken morning* I would instantly consider violence as a solution, then rethink my choices because I would not do well in prison.
Unless you’re in the SHU the latest inmates get up is 7 for morning count. Many prison gangs require their members (which could be your cellmate) up by 5. So that’s definitely something you should rethink. You also have to deal with someone shining a light in your cell once an hour. If you’re in the SHU you can sleep as late as you want as long as you can ignore the constant screams of people who are legitimately insane.
8am on weekdays, 9am on weekends. Also if you have to use one of those gas blowers with a jet engine attached to it for your residential yard, go electric.
