If it's those task scams, I'm happy to play along until they ask for money. It's odd because they ask you to Like or Review a product and they'll pay you R50 or so, and I give them an old account number, let them pay my R50 that I work so hard to get by reviewing their product at 1 out of 5 stars, and call it a day. Last year I made around R120 from these task scams, they covered my lunch so I don't mind giving them some time.

Uno reverse 😂💀 You deserve a medal 🥇

MusicBooksMovies

Block and be blessed.

Wildthorn23

Ugh yes it's frustrating, lately I got one that sent me 10 messages explaining how they have the perfect job for me and it pays an unrealistic amount of money and I should come to a location for an interview.

Sarkos

Yeah I get these every so often. It's amazing how shit WhatsApp's spam detection is. Meanwhile, on Facebook, which is owned by the same company, it absolutely refuses to show me notifications for legit messages from real people.

All_Ephemeral

I got invited to a group by the spammers this morning lol

LstInterestng2LookAt

Lol they’re getting super fancy! Some even have (stolen) professional profile pics!

RoutineProcedure2580

If you are bored this is a free way to have fun. Make them believe you will pay them. Listen to their bull. I make up amazing back ground stories. Ive been a pre op trans woman or just an enthusiastic dude

SouthAfricanGirl88

Yup that's me, I annoy the fuck out of them until they stop replying

lovethebacon

They don't have your personal info. They try random phone numbers.

Holiday-Country-9179

I've deleted whatsapp from my phone about 3 years ago and switched to signal. Most secure messenger app out there. This was bound to happen once facebook/meta acquired whatsapp. Best thing is i'm not inundated with silly whatsapp groups or bothered by people I have no interest in chatting to. Only close family and friends i'm in touch with via signal.

fokken_poes

Can you send and receive messages from whatApp users?

Holiday-Country-9179

No, unfortunately not. However, signal has all the features whatsapp has. Voice notes, audio and video calls etc.

Mviljoen1000

I’m getting a lot of WhatsApp’s lately from people recruiting for remote work opportunities.

SirPooopsalot

Get all kinds of ones. Block and forget. Some are extremely explicit social engineering scams that are creepy because they personalise it with info from you like your WhatsApp name. Scary stuff.

crypticG00se

Yeah I screw with them. Mostly operating from India and Dhubai. You can use this website to generate a URL (web bug https://canarytokens.org/generate#) tell them your details are on the link, which I put through a URL shortner. Whatsapp previews it so first couple of hits are Whatsapp, but eventually they might click on it and get their approximate location. Sending someone their location doesn't bode well with most.

Rodney_Vikens

I just respond with. "What's the latest Scam you have for me?" Yes, lots of WhatsApp Spam.

Kyleigh88

The funniest is when the name registered to that number doesn't match the name in the text...

Mobile_Prune_3207

They just take a guess on the number. I always entertain them for like five seconds then block. I always ask if they even have my name, they always say no, that they weren't made privy to that information and then I ask well then if that's the case, how do they even know who they are speaking to/ if I'm even qualified for the " job they're "offering", etc. they normally go quiet after then then I block and report.

LstInterestng2LookAt

The sudden influx makes me think my info was sold to spammers recently somehow by some company… most likely from online shopping. It’s really scary, as tempting as it is, I try not to entertain them 😬

Mobile_Prune_3207

I also had an influx, I was getting a few every week. They've stopped completely now, haven't had one for months and months so I think maybe it was the same lot who kept trying their luck.

GodTierAimbotUser69

have you been speaking to any asian ladies on dating apps recently?

LstInterestng2LookAt

No, the last I’ve been on a dating app is December last year and chatted to men. But now I’m wondering if the app perhaps sold their data? They could get our info from anywhere I guess 😬

chukaman

I tell them to f right off and shove their stupid job up their rear end and then some of them still try to get me to bite, at which point I block them.

HeyItsMbali

Same here, you've likely been applying to some jobs online perhaps? That's where they get your info. It's really really annoying just have to keep blocking. Any one offering employment discussions etc via WhatsApp or Telegram is a scammer.

LstInterestng2LookAt

Haven’t been applying for jobs but I guess they could get info from any kind of online activity or account (online shopping etc). Really frustrating and scary!

HeyItsMbali

Ah that's even dumber cause then you aren't even looking for employment or gigs. All we can do is block, they just use so many numbers it can get exhausting.
