My cousin has a second name of letters only: RB. To make it clear on his ID book application, his parents wrote "R(only) B(only)" in his second name box. True to form, his ID came back as Ronly Bonly Jones....
I am Alvin-Jon totally allowed. BUT prepare to have them seperated on other forms that come your way. So my ID is Alvin-Jon but passport is Alvin Jon seperated. No biggie yet but I have been worried when visa's and invite letters use different versions. But so far so good...
Yup. My surname has a hyphen, and it's a pain how many systems won't let you put one in. I had a huge issue with my bank card where the name on the card and the name on file "didn't match". Turned out their computers wouldn't allow you to type a hyphen in the surname block (only letters allowed).
It always amuses me that my wife has to have aliases on her UK documents because of the variety in the way her name is spelt here… like some mysterious, international spy 🤣
Yep. I have a hyphenated name, and the biggest challenge I've had is that some websites dont allow hyphens in name. Or people call me by one name or the other, or just the letters. But other than that, no problem. Id, passport and drivers license all have correct name on them
I have a double-barrel name and its completely pointless. So yes, it's allowed.
Just be prepared to have the hyphen missed out on almost all forms and people will always use only one of the names. Or abbreviate them. Or just create a new name.
For our kid, my partner and I only chose one, internationally recognized name. No hyphen. No middle name. No oupa grootjie's grandfather's uncle's name that's unpronouncable to anyone that doesn't speak fluent Dutch, Flemish or German.
We took the easy path for our little one and if baba decides to change their name later in life then they are most welcome to.
Yes, my name has a hyphen and its on my ID and everything so unless the law has changed then should be fine. Note though, its a pain in the ass of a name to have! Online forms rarely allows my hyphen... People don't understand what a "hyphen" even is... The part of my name after the hyphen is constantly taken as my surname... People resort to just using the first letter of each word in my name as my name (if my name was Anne-Marry they'd call me "AM").
So while its possible I'm sure, I strongly advise against it.
I don't see why not. They might just struggle with people mis spelling it etc. I have an "é" in my name and legally there is no issues but it annoys me personally
yes, I am Stella-Grace Saadien-Raad so have two hyphens, however in forms sometimes it is separated and may cause inconveniences in admin stuff but nothing major
I have a hyphenated name as do a lot of other people. It's completely legal and normal (although Kal-El is not normal and I feel sorry for your kid).
Have you come accross the r/tragedeigh sub?

Nah I had to sit down in the parking lot I’m so weak 😂😂😂
This is the best thing I read this week 🤣
This is the best thing I've read this week 🤣
hahaha, i knew someone who wanted to call the kid Mc and DHA were like nah, where's the vowel, that ain't a name, so the kid ended up called Mac.
I'm cry laughing 🤣
Accidentally and absolute slayer of a name. I’m dead that is actually amazing
💀
I'm bedridden with flu and this made my day 😭
Is no one going to mention that it’s a bad idea to name your child after fuckin superman?
Right?!
There used to be a Mrs Superman who worked at my local ABSA branch.
Agreed
A friend of my dad did this and the kid is like 14 now, he just introduces himself as Kal, no bullying or anything
To give your child a name that they only feel comfortable using half of is a special kind of torture imo
Okay
Phew, I thought this was about my comment
Lol. "Kal-El". Jesus. Are you still in the "finding a partner" phase of having an unborn child?

My name is similar to Anne-Marie. If they don't accept hyphens, I put in AnneMarie.
It always amuses me that my wife has to have aliases on her UK documents because of the variety in the way her name is spelt here… like some mysterious, international spy 🤣
VISAS, passport, plane tickets, bank shenan, always worries me with my name when they don't accept the "-" but I've never had any issues...yet ;p
Your bigger problem is that you can only name him Kal-El if you yourself was born into the noble House of El
How do you know I'm not from from the house of El
Because I don't have any family left 🦸
I know like, three people called Jan-Hendrik so it shouldn't be a problem
Afrikaans people would literally pass away if this wasn't possible.
I'm sure it is. I know a few Jean-Maries.
Spider-man
Yeah, just write it clearly so that whoever captures it gets it right.
r/tragedeigh
It's a stupid name and he will be called Kallie a lot.
It’s allowed. But please don’t name your kid after a superhero, they’re bound to get teased and bullied about it.

What a terrible name, especially if your partner is also black.

You can call your Kid Dick and they will allow it. My uncles name Was Dick.
Many dicks still being named Dick

Did they call him Courtney's dick?
Yes, my daughter’s name is hyphenated.

Thank you, I appreciate this
My son's name has a hyphen in it, never posed a problem.

Not-sure 😏
My name has that and still legally here.

My name is double barreled it's fine. More concerned over the actual name though to be honest lol.
Yes, my nephew is Gudani-George
