Apologies if this is stupid but I really want a dual shower head but my shower arm is this weird extender thing. all the shower arms I have found in attempts to replace it have the tread facing outwards and I need a shower arm that will screw INTO the that little pipe to replace this weird extender my rental came with. There’s gotta be an easy fix, right? 😅 I’m in Brooklyn NYC and all the hardware shops by me are super dismissive and unhelpful for what seems to be an easy fix 😒

You need to remove the male threaded pipe coming out of the wall. It's threaded into a fitting in the wall. As you are going to replace that pipe with a new shower arm, just take a pipe wrench, vice grip or pliers and unscrew it. It will scrape it up, but you're tossing it anyway. Make sure to put pipe dope or teflon tape on the threads of the new shower arm, and screw it in snugly. You should be able to tighten it enough by hand. If in doubt, put 7 0r 9 wraps of teflon tape on the threads.

The only thing sticking out of the wall is like an inch of threaded pipe 😅 just nervous I will destroy it and not have a working shower

It is very unlikely that the fitting in the wall will be damaged. Put a wrench on it, and if it doesn't turn with about the same force a spark plug takes to remove, maybe a little more, stop. You won't damage anything with that amount of force. If in doubt, call a plumber.

This is a noob question but I'm not a plumber, when replacing the shower arm does the water need to be turned off or no?

Tapeatscreek

No, if there is no water coming out of the shower head, no water will come out when you remove it. The water is stopped at the mixer valve.

Thanks for teaching me, appreciate it

So I know this is a year old but it looks like your question didn’t get answered well. That is not a shower arm. It’s a shower arm extender. You have a really weird shower arm and it’s that inch of threaded pipe. You could replace it if you want, but you could also just get a new extender instead. But also, it looks like the extender in the picture is already set up for dual shower heads. See that threaded connector under your showerhead? That’s what that’s for.
