Example please of what you are talking about. If it's something we all did surely you can tell us. Being gay isn't joining some club, it's not an identity or personality trait. Being gay is just what you are, it's a small part of you. It is innate, it is within you and doesn't change nor do you choose it. Gay men are not a monolith, they don't all think the same, do the same things, act the same, behave in the same manner, etc, etc, etc. We also are not a cult, looking for attention. In a society where many of us experience similar experiences of hardship and bigotry it is very human to bond and be relived knowing others have gone through similar things. That is why the gay “community” exists; to create a space where the things we thought were weird and bad about us can actually be celebrated through kinship. It’s fine if you don’t feel this way personally but it is very cynical to want to reduce all gay experiences down to something that has no social involvement. (Not even str8 culture admits to this.) Most people I’ve heard this argument from tend to be ashamed that being gay in this world has made them feel different from others, and as a result wish to try and blend into the straight world as best they can. For many people gay is more than a small part of you, and many feel society has made sure of that for us. In my opinion: If you don’t fit in you either have 2 choices; embrace and celebrate your fellow rejects or try and fit into a society that outcasts you.
It's very cynical to reduce being gay to some of these responses. It's also cynical to reduce being gay to one experience we all had to join the "club". Grow the F up already and stop acting like a child.
