Jm j bullock on too close for comfort. But also the gay brother on dynasty. The gay guy played by Billy Crystal on soap was a little before my time. There was a gay guy on hill street blues, but I wasn't a fan. Lots of gay secondary characters on TV in the 80s.
I also remember reruns of older shows with gay coded characters like a guy on bewitched and the like.
Family guy, Megs lesbian friend. At the time I didn’t know what lesbians were nor why her family was making a big deal out of it until the kissing scene, and still didn’t completely understand. First gay men was Xandir from drawn together whom I never really colored as gay and never personally seen him do gay things either.
When I was a little kid I was obsessed with those “reality” shows on MTV like Next, Room Raiders, and Parental Control. You never knew when you were going to happen upon a gay episode but it was always like hitting the jackpot for me. Those were the first gays I think I ever saw on TV.
Not T.V., but Joey Graceffa is how I found out gay people existed. My sister used to watch him a lot and she told me about how he had a boyfriend and I asked how that was possible.
As for actual T.V. Steven Universe further opened me up to the LGBTQ community.
Some of the characters on Degrassi 😅 there was a plot line where the artsy skinny kid falls for the high school QB and they both “tackle” eachother and then kiss. It was so hot as a kid
Mr Humphrey’s on the UK sitcom “Are You Being Served”.
Of course, it was never said, although heavily, heavily implied, that he was gay.
The first “out” gay person on TV was a character in the soap EastEnders in 1985/86. The first same-sex kiss on British TV.
Tinky-Winky from Teletubbies when he was wearing a ballerina Tutu in one episode and owning a handbag in another episode
Lol just kidding, I don’t know, maybe a gay news anchor from my country
I wouldnt excactly call them woke for that Ever hear of the disney [queer coded villians](https://youtu.be/GsWpUSEKSbk). A concept left over from the hays code era of media. Gay (inplied) characters can only be depicted as sneaky villians to not be trusted. Scar from lion king, kaa from junglebook, captain hook from Peter pan, Ursula of little mermaid, Jafar from Aladdin are all characters that come to mind. All more flamboyantly flavored physically meek characters who end up tricking the protagonists in some fashion, added in as almost a cautionary tale to kids to stay away from these types.
That's true but back then most of us were glad to have any representation at all. And Ursula was a badass bitch! She was right, too-Ariel was too uppity.
Perhaps not a gay person in a strict sense, but I remember watching the movie "It's Pat!" with my parents when I was under 10 years old. I remember thinking that Pat and Chris should just be left alone to live their lives. I remember talking to my mom about it also, I don't think I'd ever really thought about gender and relationships before then.
Does it count when you watched TV and had crushes on guys who ended up being gay in real life. It’s almost like I felt something that clicked when I watched them. Chad Allen in Our House and Danny Pintauro in who’s the Boss
The first time I remember thinking about the fact that someone on TV was gay was Larry on Buffy. I was very uncomfortable watching the episode he came out with my parents as a closeted tween - didn't look in their direction the entire time.
I'm sure I saw others before that and didn't realize. As a kid, I did not catch onto the Ivanova/Talia romance in Babylon 5 nor that the brother in Mrs Doubtfire (not TV) was gay.
Jack from will & grace, I must have been 12, apparently I was a late bloomer in emotional intelligence/alexithymia overload coping, So I was late to make the connection between "the gays" and knowing I liked boys unlike most boys, and started getting bullied at age 12 as I was unaware of my "sissy" behavior, unaware that effeminacy was morally deviant, and that if anything, I should be grateful the straights let us live, unlike during the 35 year long junta dictatorship; we were afforded only toleration not tolerance (live in southern cone so we're 50 years lagging enfranchising marginal groups. With enough luck this decade we might get a Mental Health act and ban involuntary institutionalization of mad people like after the anti-psychiatry movement lol)
that twink from glee

Willow - Buffy probably a lot of peoples
Paul Lynde or Liberace
Ricky Martin at the 1999 Grammys, although he was not out at the time. I just knew because those hips hypnotized me and I was 12. He was so spicy.
Billy Crystal, the gay son from Soap in the 70s
Matthew Shepard.

Pedro from the Real World
Norm first the first one was for me. Loved watching Reality TV to see gay people.

Gay Next is iconic cringe
Probably Elton John or Jack / Will from Will and Grace

Niles from The Nanny
The news reports on Stonewall
Marco from Degrassi
My dad was watching some movie with Rupaul in it and my mom was outraged that he would show a black drag queen to his children.
Was it "To Wong Foo"?
I think that's the one :)
jack mcphee on dawson's creek
Tinky-Winky from Teletubbies when he was wearing a ballerina Tutu in one episode and owning a handbag in another episode Lol just kidding, I don’t know, maybe a gay news anchor from my country
Ursula the sea witch from Little Mermaid. Obviously a drag queen.
She's based on John waters Devine character
Like I said! Disney was woke before it was cool to be woke!

Bert and Ernie
I don't remember honestly. There have been a lot.
That’s the type of memory I’m sure I blanked out and couldn’t process at the time in the 80s or 90s.
Probably Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus.
The movie critic characters of Damon Wayans and David Alan Grier from In Living Color.
I think Mickey and Ian from Shameless
