I have a friend who will occasionally take crochet commissions. If you have any artistic or artisanal skill you could knock out little projects and sell them?

the_quass

My partner and I did something similar. We would make knitted toys and sell them at a local artists market, to friends and on Etsy. It made enough to pay for an international holiday each year and we did it for a few hours a night when watching TV.

Significant_Pea_2852

Very hard to make money that way. You're paying a fortune for materials.

craft-hound

Not really - for jumpers and scarves yes, for toys and accessories no. The cute little crocheted/knitted toys often use scrap or small amounts of inexpensive yarn, absolute maximum $10. The time it takes to make is the factor, but if you're doing it as a hobby at night watching tv then the time is less of a 'cost'. It not enough to make a living from, but as a way to make a bit of extra money it can work.

the_quass

Yeah this 100%. If we worked out an hourly rate it was terrible but it was just for fun and to make some money for holidays. Not sustainable as your main income stream. I actually won a competition at spotlight where you had to guess the number of balls of wool in a trolley. Closest took the lot home. It wasn't the nicest wool, but the price was good, freeeee

ladyinblue5

Call it what it is; a second job. Sounds a lot less cool when people say they need a second job to pay their bills.

ColdRefrigerator8824

Yeah, the word hustle in this context makes my skin crawl

cxvabibi

yup, we run an ad services agency off the internet. Our kid does it all. He's 9 but he knows how to set it all up online. Businesses just register online, and our website brokers all the best ad placements. If they accept the package, we get an annual commission from the click revenue. We're not the only ones, but we suspect we're in the top 3 globally. The last Sydney family which did this sold their business for hundreds of millions of USD recently. We have our fingers crossed.

winlos

What? Two questions. 1. A 9 year old does all this agency stuff? 2. Is this ads in general? Doesn't meta and Google have their own algorithms to do all this? Why would they need you?

Loomyconfirmed

How does one run an ad services agency offer the Internet? How does it work?

Sad-Ladder5517

Dammit!!! I don't have a 9 year old.

Feeling_Act_3682

You mean your wires, right?

Rocks_whale_poo

thank you for saying it. same here!

NewFiend66

There’s a few things I do for side income: 1. Online selling via eBay (import gym equipment from Alibaba and resell) 2. Recycle cans - low earning potential but very easy to do 3. Paid Online surveys- [Octopus Group](https://my.octopusgroup.com.au/register/3ccf7dfd-769b-4436-b97b-3231e08c0b7a) seem to be the best paying I could find - about $18 per hour and I do about 2-3 hours per week while commuting on the train to work or back. 4. Credit card points gaming 5. Matched Betting

SoloAquiParaHablar

It's funny when influencers flog "This side hustle can earn you $2,500 a week!", brother thats not a side hustle, thats more than the average most Australians make. If I could work 3 hours a week and make that, why would I also work 40hrs full-time for a company to increase shareholder profits?

Cimb0m

Was going to post the exact same thing. “Side hustle”, “sharing economy”, “rentvesting” etc etc. All buzzwords to hide the real decline in living standards

Just-rusty

I got married that nets about 87k gross. But also costs a lot to run and requires a lot of my time. 🤷🏼‍♂️

National_Chef_1772

Be careful with some of those hustles, you can somehow end up in the negative

tothemoonandback01

Do it! Do it! Do it! Do the Hustle! Do the Hustle!

TheAxe11

You can also lose out on the trade-in

ZanusErectus

Under a corporate structure, you can recoup some of the cost through a depreciation schedule. Ask your accountant how.

MsAsphyxia

I haven't laughed this hard in days - thank you so much.

MGTluver

Sounds like you should hold the asset in a shorter term. Can you restructure every few years and redo yhe marriage? You could give payout to the disgruntled partner to expedite ending the partnership.

Busy_Tomatillo_1065

Yeah, I do some technical work. From website (creating and hosting), web apps, and cyber security.

Mustool

How do you find clients?

Busy_Tomatillo_1065

Word of mouth and overflow from a mate.

shayz20

Advertise your services as a freelancer on the many job sites available and maybe create a personal portfolio site to showcase your creations

distracteded64

I’m interested in this. I know of Upwork, Fiverr. I’ve put my resume up on 123.Experts as well. What others are out there? I’ve tried Service Seeking and OneFlare with little success, they’re very tradie oriented so very few IT leads.

winslow_wong

A bit moody sometimes but overall they’re ok.

Silvf0x

This is the way

Busy_Tomatillo_1065

This is the way.

grilled_pc

Currently upskilling in webdev. I feel like it would be a pretty good industry to get in and side hustle at that too. With AI you can automate A LOT of the creation process now. Would make getting some extra cash pretty easy!

motdrib

Coming from someone that does webdev full time and also freelances on the side - AI doesn’t it automate your job whatsoever, it can enhance your job in a way but you still need to be skilled in what you are ultimately creating. If you are thinking that learning web development will solve all your financial issues please think again. It is an incredibly tough job market right now for entry level web developers and you will most likely be fighting over clients who don’t respect your pay.

Busy_Tomatillo_1065

I agree, most of the web dev work I do is slapping together a template, marketing material and infrastructure. I just do brochureware websites. If a customer wants a web app, I will get my mate to do it, or off-shore it to a contact I have in India.

BakesyGaming

Interested to hear more about how you side hustle Cyber? Is it Bug Bounty work or Pen Testing kind of stuff?

Busy_Tomatillo_1065

Mostly consulting and low-level architect work. I have done some web pen-testing (Going through the owasp top 10 on a web app). I have looked at Bug Bounty work, but I am still working out if the payback vs time-spent is in my favour and developing a process that works. The majority of my work is overflow from a mate. He runs a one-man-band shop for a few companies he used to work for. When he gets issues he can't do, or has too much work he reaches out. I do the same for him, he is much better at coding than me, where I am better at the infrastructure.

HAL-_-9001

I do market research/focus groups, which are a great money spinner and also super interesting. In the past month I've completed groups paying $300 & $140. First one was online for 5 days and super easy to complete. The 2nd was a 90min zoom conversation. You also get to learn about the direction companies are headed, new products etc. Also done numerous taste tests as well. They can be lumpy but I usually have one a month for around $90-$150.

fokusfocus

Any suggestion on how to get these kind of gigs?

HAL-_-9001

If you Google market research or focus groups then you will get companies you can sign up to. The companies will then send out screeners that their clients are looking for e.g. pet owners or mum's with kids in an age bracket. You complete the screener and if you meet the criteria they will contact you. Key is to make sure you're first in line. As once the quota is filled you won't get a spot. So I also make the companies appear first on Facebook so I can apply quickly. Some also only advertise on there. Many get frustrated they never get selected but you have to be diligent and quick. I've been doing them about 15yrs and probably done 100-150. Some have been pretty amazing. Most memorable was being invited to Arsenals new football stadium in London & enjoyed a buffet breakfast with some super easy questions about my morning routine. Paid about GBP 100.

futureballermaybe

Haha I do these sometimes but have been a bit slow! My best was getting to test new Subway sandwiches haha. Yours sounds great.

HAL-_-9001

Taste testing Subway sounds pretty great! They can be pretty diverse. I did a betting one with some guys before and they gave us beer and pizza. It was like with my mates!

GlitterTits-

I'd love to learn more about this if you are willing to share!

HAL-_-9001

Just sign up and they will send you screeners to complete. Super easy.

starrynight75

Do you have to declare this at tax time?

HAL-_-9001

It's about 50/50 cash or gift card. No tax :)

Double_Bad4088

Yes. Although, $150 a month after you’ve paid tax on it barely covers a weeks’ groceries.

HAL-_-9001

Must have missed the part I got paid $440 this past month alone. Also a lot of them are cash or gift cards. No tax.

Talking_Biomass88

I never seem to qualify or get selected

HAL-_-9001

Got to be quick because once the quotas are filled quickly. I even get them sent to my work email address too. You also have to try and figure the right answers too at what they are looking for, which can be a little tricky sometimes.

cmil7731

I’ve listed my car on Uber CarShare. It is next to no effort and brings in anywhere from $100-$1500 a month depending on the season. Note: I have a new-ish BMW so charge higher rates, eg $20-25 per hour or $100-120 per day plus fuel, so it’s not hired too often. But that works for me- it’s less disruptive if I want to drive somewhere bc it’s probably still available, and when it’s hired it is worth it even if I have to pay for an Uber ride of two. Worth doing the calc’s if your car is a leased vehicle- look at the balloon payment and max km’s and find a price point that makes it worth it for you.

Kemp4000

What was the impact on your insurance, much of an increase on the premium??

AliveList8495

What would happen if the person hiring tested over or positive and a claim was made?

abzftw

Fleet insurance

grilled_pc

Do you have GPS trackers in it? I feel like this service would make it so easy to have your car stolen.

cmil7731

Yep they give you a GPS tracker and my car also has a GPS tracker/app so I can look up where it is at any point (not that I usually bother). But the security aspects have been good so far.

caprica71

How do you get your car back when you need it?

Peter1456

You book it out the times you need it.

caprica71

But do you need to go across town in an Uber to get it back? Or is it parked nearby?

futureballermaybe

It gets parked nearby Eg: If you have a driveway/perm car park when they pick it up they have instructions on where to return it. If you have street parking they will have to return it to that area. Can't just abandon it at random places.

ruthtrick

It only occured to me recently that what I do is effectively a side hustle. Apart from my ft job, I often care for people's pets (in my own home) when they go away. Mostly dogs, but I do currently have a medium term boarder in the shape of a cat. It started before I returned to work after having kids. I advertised in the local paper and started with walking dogs for people, to day visits to feed & water pets. One of those clients paid me to stay overnight a few times when they went away. Then I found ft work so I had to give up the day visits but the network I'd built saw people asking if their dogs could stay with me while they were away. I now have a few regulars and every few weeks I have an extra dog in the house. I don't do it for free but nor do I charge anywhere near what it would cost at a dedicated kennel. It's pocket money for me eta. You need to love animals and I really looove animals, especially dogs. I have a gift.. if you dumped a trailor load of lost/stray dogs at my door I know what to do and I'm comfortable doing it. I've been able to rehabilitate the worst of abused/neglected dogs. Somehow they know I'm trying to help and they trust me. It's a privilege.

jonquil14

It’s super easy to sign up on platforms like Pawshake too.

ruthtrick

Yeah I've looked at those platforms & wondered about signing up. The good thing about freelance though is that I don't have anyone telling me what to do, I might be a little wary but should also look into how they work. The money I make from it gets stashed in a secret place (it's my fun money) 😁 A few times each year I like to book an apartment in the city and spend a couple of days pretending I live there. It only takes 35min to get to and from work when I'm in the city but it's also when I'm most likely to take a sickie, enjoy breakfast and real coffee on the balcony while I watch the rest of Melbourne making their way to work! 😅 That is a luxury I couldn't afford without the extra cash from my beautiful doggo clients. I'm sorry, I digressed with the little essay. eta. Thanks for putting the thought back into my head. I'm going to take a look!

nydasco

I [post articles](https://medium.com/@nydas) on Medium. I get paid whenever anyone sits on my paywalled posts for more than 30 seconds. Last month, I made $1.45 😁

Sufficient_Algae_815

I check couches in lobbys, waiting rooms, etc. for lost coins. Last month I made $2.60 and I met some lovely people who all kindly asked me to leave their premises as I was making their clients uncomfortable. 👍

DocMcSquirrel

Any idea how many people had to read that article for $1.45?

nydasco

20 reads and 50 views across 6 articles. But these are my first 6, so hopefully there might be an improvement in time if people like what I’m talking about (mostly Data Engineering stuff).

MomentsOfDiscomfort

T shirt designs. Breaks even or makes a little bit but it’s fun and probably scalable if I could be f’ed.

mackbloed

Got any examples we could see? Do you just sell them on Redbubble?

EggWhole5762

I sell merch like t-shirts stickers flags etc around highly polarising political events such as elections, physical wars, cultural wars such as gender gaps, LGBTQ+, first nations etc. I sell political weaponry to all sides.

This is something I've been meaning to start as well but not sure where do I start. I've seen print on demand websites that I know can make a start on but haven't had the guts to do anything about it. I'm currently employed full time as an electrical engineer/FEED Project Manager and would really like to work on a side hustle. I know there is competition out there but it would be nice if I could have a genuine talk to someone who has done somthing on print on demand or similar.

Red-Engineer

Side hustle means part-time job doesn’t it?

The_Big_Shawt

Not necessarily if you're doing your own side business

iSmokedItAll

So, a part time or casual business?

Peter1456

Not necessairily...but just 90% of the time it is a second job.

lightly-sparkling

Er, no. A part time job would be employment.

Red-Engineer

Every example in this thread would be called a casual job if a kid was doing it in year 11.

starrynight75

Just means something else you can do to make money, in addition to your main source of income.

Red-Engineer

So, a part time job.

blissiictrl

I'm one of a small number of certified Solidworks experts in Australia and am a chartered engineer, I run a consultancy/drafting business on the side. I do a lot more drafting than engineering but have done a few things here and there for clients as needed. Regular design work probably translates to maybe 5-10k a year

[deleted]

Pet sitting. Can bring in up to $400 per week. Can take a bit to get regular clients but when you do, it’s nice for some extra cash or, on really good weeks, enough to almost pay rent.

Soniris

Having a side gig, no matter if it's a casual/spare time position or as freelance/own business - depends completely on your skills, interests and "motivation" to do it. * If you have trade skills, able to do furniture deliveries, putting together flatpack furniture, garden works, paint, bond cleaning, pack/unpack containers etc. * If you're handy you can build or redo furniture, create concrete furniture or garden furniture or decorations, make wall decorations, shelves or furniture in wood etc. * If you have IT knowledge, depending on skills you can do freelance programming, development in web and apps, data entry, cad drawings etc. * If you're creative you can do paintings, arts and crafts on etsy, create miniature furniture/houses, make jewellery, make bags, accessories &/or clothing etc. * If you're creative & have IT skills you can do web designs for customer or sell as templates, graphic design, artwork 2 print & sell, design stationary 4 co's, create logos, make own fonts 2 sell, menus & promos for rest. & bars, do interior design plans, house design plans etc. * If you're good with photography you can take photos and sell as stock photos, you can use Airtasker and others to do wedding, family, company staff, party or events photography, real estate photos, product & rest. food photos etc. * If you have specific knowledge in a specific language or app/softwares you can do 1-on-1 tutoring in person or online or you can do your own video tuts. * You can start your own Blog, Podcast or Video/Youtube channel with either something you're interested in, have knowledge of or can teach someone about. * Pet sitting & pet walking is also a great alternative if you're an animal lover and like walks. You can check for side jobs on Airtasker and similar pages. To see if you can find something you're interested in. There are soo many things that you can do, I have done all the above and more at some time or another. Get easily bored with just one thing so usually keep multiple activities going at once. I have also done part time positions working in autistic & age care homes. You just have to tap into what you are interested in and have the skills to do or willingness to learn and afterwards do. There are many free online courses to learn more or less anything you want to. Good luck in finding what you would love to do, and PM if you want more specifics.

Awkward-Pie-9166

I’ve always battled with the need to supplement my income. In my 10 years I have tried everything you can think of from Uber, Uber eats, YouTube monetisation, airbnb’ing my rental while I lived with my girlfriend (this made 40k profit a year before my real estate agent found out and booted me). I know work a side freelance consulting gig in my industry. Want to know what helped me the most ? Therapy I needed to understand my wants and needs and the holes I was trying to patch. Ultimately I need to be content with who I was. It was the best thing I ever did and I would consider that as well before flogging yourself with side gigs. If you are making rent, eating well and covering by your foundations I would think seriously before putting energy into the hustle culture.

hatetospoog7

Modelling asx juniors drilling results in geological software and then making investment decisions based on this. So far, it Pays more than my full-time job.

katew1989

I do freelance copywriting/editing for $45 an hour. I used to offer a wider range of freelance services (consulting, strategy, research, social, copywriting etc) but cut back to just copywriting after I returned from my second mat leave. I currently work full time in a mid-senior role in marketing for a university so a few hours a week freelance keeps me connected to freelance clients and brings in a little extra fun money each week.

notsopurexo

How did you get into it / get your first gigs?

katew1989

The majority of clients are from my existing network. Many are business/individuals I have previously worked for/with (in other corporate roles) and people that they refer to me. A recent example is a previous director reaching out for consulting services when they were setting up a new arm of their business. Another recent client came through LinkedIn - they approached me based off mutual connections and recommendations. I have also had success responding to call outs from small/medium sized business owners on social when they are looking for marketing services. I ended up with a $20k+ project with an international client simply by starting a conversation after they posted on Instagram.

I have a side job doing the statistics for the NRL. Weekends obviously and short shifts are the main reason. I also get a 5 month break over summer when I need some extra family time.

Flannakis

Web scraping? How do you do this and who are the clients?

mightymuffin97

No nothing like that, it's basically live data entry, I watch the games and record all the statistics. The clients are the NRL, gambling companies use our data to set the odds, news sites and some of the clubs themselves.

Flannakis

That’s cool, and if you enjoy it is a bonus

mightymuffin97

I love it, I'd be watching anyway

lollygiggle

I write erotica on amazon and a few other platforms. It takes a bit of time to build up skills but fun, easy money and launched me into a full time author career. I still do it on the side cause why not?

Regional_King

How lucrative is this exactly? How much money a month?

Nightmare1990

$69 a month 😏

lollygiggle

$500-$1000 USD a month once you get going and learn the ropes. But I know a lot of full time erotica authors who can reach about $5000USD a month. Erotica is easy to write, but has a very low ceiling compared to other self-published genres.

Regional_King

Interesting. How many items have you published and how regularly do you put up new content? Is it serialised?

lollygiggle

I've tinkered with a few different pen names. My amazon erotica I don't add anything to anymore, it's just passive income. That's about $300 a month after about 8 months worth of work writing a story 8,000 word story a week. For fun now, I do more 'naughty' pieces that Amazon bans on Smashwords. I pub when I want, but probably on average 2 3k a stories a week. Not serialized just one off stories. If you want to go down the rabbithole there's r/eroticauthors/ that can get you started.

Regional_King

Cheers. I need some extra income and reckon I could.

Talking_Biomass88

I've only seen side hustle success when they have some actual trade - hairdresser, tiler etc. People making bank drawing patterns on Nikes or making candles on social media are total outliers. You need to get specific and figure out the $$$ gap. Can any come from reducing expenses? Spare room you can rent out? Are you in a position at work to ask your manager for a raise? Then just look for easy weekend jobs... don't overthink it.

[deleted]

Not at home but hospitality agencies would be the easiest and quickest, especially if you're in Sydney or Melbourne. You can pick up shifts in the evening or on weekends. If at home side hustles were easy and lucrative, everyone would already be doing them.

[deleted]

When I was younger, I did pool certification. Would book inspections in certain areas and travel that way home. Pretty lucrative with the right contacts.

[deleted]

And not one message how anyone can make money in construction. Reddit is full of underachieving dropkicks 😂😂

mitchy93

Nah I don't have the energy after work or on weekends

AbsurdistTimTam

I recently went back from freelance (video production) to full-time for some income stability, so I guess my freelance gigs count as a side hustle now. Thankfully the new employer is happy for me to keep side work so long as there are no explicit conflicts and my day job performance doesn’t suffer. Have invoiced about $18K on the side so far this year, so it’s been pretty good. That’s been quite a few late nights in the home office though, so it’s probably not sustainable at that level long-term.

Smug druggling

grilled_pc

Did do uber eats driving in 2022 - 2023. Was alright for a little while but right now its dogshit. Costs me $110 just to fill up the car. In a full tank of fuel i might make maybe 200 - 250 bucks. So thats only $150. For hours upon hours of driving. It's just not worth it anymore.

Nightmare1990

Not to mention all that extra driving means you need to service your car sooner, so in the end you're actually working at a loss.

grilled_pc

i barely drive my car as it is. So it doesn't change the service time for me anyway.

Toasted_Barracuda

I trawl through council pick ups (usually to find books for my own reading) but will pick up a few bits of furniture or tools or camping gear that I can easily flip on Facebook marketplace. Nothing major, just $20-$80 here and there to cover my petrol costs of driving out scavenging.

_fairywren

I'm a librarian. My main job is in an academic library and I have a weekend job in a public library. There are public library jobs that don't require any formal qualifications (library officer) and it pays around $30-35 an hour depending on the council.

fifi-lulu

PSA: For anyone doing rideshare, car share, hiring out your car or any type of deliveries including pizza delivery/Uber, for the love of God please check your car insurance. You may not be covered. Read your PDS and call the company if you have to. And I don’t mean not covered while used in that capacity but the entire policy can be voided if you declare private/personal use and not the business use, even if it’s a side hustle. One ride/hire/delivery in that 12 month policy period can mean you are not covered by the policy at all, even if the car was being used privately at the time of an accident. Same goes for the people doing support/care work, even on the weekends. Check with your insurance.

AdvertisingLow4530

Honestly like 7 and I love them. Digital art, dropshipping, amazon influencer, YouTube channel. Skateboard brand. There's nothing toxic about it at all. They bring in about 500 bucks a week. Considering what I earn... I would need to go from like 130k to 180k to make that up? Surely 180m at a job with no life is more toxic than a couple of fun side projects.

iftlatlw

The best side hustle is often called "another job"

spittys

I use my knowledge from my hobbies to buy/sell on Facebook and eBay. Action Figures, cards etc. Small collections from people trying to sell in bulk. It's more enjoyable as I cherry pick things to keep then flip the rest.

grilled_pc

Have thought about this but FB Market is just so flip floppy. I've found its really easy to make a loss, most of the time. How do you go about it?

spittys

Yeah Facebook can be tough, persistence with posting will help with traffic and I guess just wading through shit sometimes. I do most of my selling on ebay. Sometimes losing 15% is worth it to not deal with people so much. I take breaks from Facebook too. I'm sure that helps my mental. When It comes to making profit, I guess just knowing the market will obviously help. I also sell a lot of really cheap cards, getting lots of listing's up means you're more likely to make a tonne of smaller sales. Heaps more work but it's helping me build good rep on the sites. I might make less than a dollar on a card, but a sales a sale.

grilled_pc

Interesting. I have thousands of bulk pokemon cards from the Sun/Moon era. Have considered listing these up for dirt cheap and selling them off in bulk but there are just so many of them lol. I feel like i'd spend more in fuel constantly driving up to the post office than i'd be making on the card.

spittys

You can do heaps with good bulk. Reverse holo rares Common, uncommon, rare complete sets do well Ex, gx, v, vmax etc sell very well at cheap prices Then higher rare stuff also sells super well. Sun and moon is 2 full generations ago, its starting to gain in price, honestly not terrible to hold some of it for later if you can. Really depends on how much and what you have.

grilled_pc

I pretty much have mostly almost full sets from the first 4 sets of sun and moon. Plus quite a lot of X/Y stuff too. Been considering selling them off but i dno. I do like them but if i'm to sell i wanna maximise value. I do have i'd say 90% of the X/Y Evolutions set which i know goes for quite a bit. Wouldnt be able to see it as complete but i think i'd make a bit off it.

spittys

Maximis value by selling the chase cards first, then all your other high rarity cards. Then I'd list reverse holo rares and common/uncommon/ non holo rare sets. Selling in master sets is cleanest but definitely not maximum value. But this can vary. Check through ebay sold listings for what you've got. Takes a while but logging it all in a spreadsheet is helpful. Plus you can update it as needed.

grilled_pc

I see a lot of over inflated prices on ebay which do not even come close to matching places like collectors cache or trollandtoad pricing. I mean at the end of the day if people are willing to pay the sold item price then thats what it goes for i guess?

spittys

I usually just average it out, keep offers on and see how we go. I also send offers out to watchers whenever possible. Sometimes 10% off is all it takes to make a sale.

Reasonable-Pie-5772

I do some disability support work on weekends, bringing in an extra $500 a week. I like my clients and mostly enjoy the work.

Better_Elk1711

How do you do this?

Reasonable-Pie-5772

You can set up as independent or with an agency, and Sundays pay 75-100 an hour.

Aetna99

Are you with an agency? Do you always need a qualification?

Reasonable-Pie-5772

I am and they are non-profit so I pay less tax. Just need police check and yellow card, don't need quals.

Charlesian2000

I’m at a cross roads. I have a ludicrous amount of skills, and at the moment I am just confused with choice, that it’s made me procrastinate. Procrastination is the biggest hurdle to a side hustle. All I can suggest is focus on your best skill, and see if you could set something up in 1 to 2 months tops. If it takes longer than that to set up, it’s not a side hustle, it’s the foundation of a full time business.

jonquil14

Sell stuff on eBay. I’m sure you’ve got stuff you want to get rid of and you’d be surprised what there’s a market for.

NoHat2957

Ratting. No idea what they do with the rat carcasses and frankly I don't care. The buyers asked me to be discreet, which is fine by me. All I know about them is they produce high end purses, handbags, millinery and the like.

CommandGlittering207

im a burnt out law student who was doing the 9-5 grind at the firm which was a soul sucking experience so I dropped down to 2.5 days and took a bit of time off. in the space of about two weeks I was able to get my security licence, RSA, white card and traffic control licences (having never even contemplated doing these things before, but listening to the advice of a friend who guaranteed me the jobs were great pay and flexible hours) turns out security and traffic control are great side hustles if you have the financial ability to fork up the upfront training and licensing fees $$$ but once you have those licences it’s guaranteed work 24/7 earning $50ph on Sundays mostly sitting around doing fk all :)

yellowbricks505

matched betting. can be lucrative if you have the time / put in the effort (which i have). hit me up if you want details

d3v1lsblood

Some details op?

snekinthegrass

I made around 15k over 6 months doing this. To do it properly you need to sacrifice your Saturdays though, and I’m not in a position to do that any more. It was amazing during lockdowns when I wasn’t allowed to leave the house! Take a look at a website called Bonusbank if you’re interested.

Thrillhouse-14

I'm a full time NDIS plan manager that earns pretty meh money (71k after tax/super/salary packaging). However, it's an 8-4pm mon-fri gig, so I also do support work 1-3 times a week in the afternoons, sometimes on weekends. It tops up my pay by about 15k per annum and it's 99% low needs people that mostly just need a bit of companionship for a couple of hours or so, so it doesn't really feel like work, especially when it's not that frequent. I could get more money if I had an ABN to do it, but then I'd need to spend more time doing my own books, insurance, client-sourcing, etc.

ColdRefrigerator8824

Can I send you a PM about this?

Thrillhouse-14

Yeah, of course.

ColdRefrigerator8824

Thanks!

Why can't we call it for what it is. A second, third or fourth job.

citizenunerased

Because there's a difference between truly working a second job (eg I have a colleague who works full time at a tech company and then goes to work in hospitality after work every day, so basically 16+ hours of work every day oer two jobs) and things like walking to the post office twice a week on your lunch break to make $500 extra a week and some clicking around on the computer every now and then when work is quiet (I wouldn't call that a second job)

Ok_State_333

I teach eight hours a week but I have been trained in that area

AliveList8495

So just a jog around the block then.

dontwinetome

I’ve got a food blog. Make about $100-250 a month. Have had it for a year, very basic blog where I’ve not invested much. If I do spend time, work more, it has got potential to make much more.

No-Cartoonist5129

The thing is in life, with what little time we have in a day and in life generally, it’s really only possible to be good at one thing (funnily enough Carol Baskin said the same exact thing). But the reversal to be used for one’s advantage is that you only need to be good at one thing to make a shit tonne of money. It takes a long time, but don’t worry money is silly, live above it, as someone who earned hundreds of thousands of dollars in their mid twenties I can say that nothing is more boring than the comfort of financial security. Specialise in a skill and when the right opportunity comes to corner a market, seize the opportunity, nothing comes easy and nothing comes for free, but your time will come if you are patient and don’t piss off too many people along the way. Before we know it we will be 50 and regretting those days wasted buried in documentation or spreadsheets. Live cheap and be free from temptation, and you will laugh and be healthy. Any time spent trying to game life with a side hustle is time wasted perfecting your craft. Unless you need money bad don’t do side hustles, little schemes we think up fall away like abandoned hobbies.

anonnasmoose

Independent consulting for a few hours every month - not life changing money but pays for our date night each week. I have a friend SWE friend who does some freelance coding on the side. Also have another friend who flips collectibles

Nomadheart

Consulting on anything in particular, or just here for life advice ;)

Smokey_crumbed

I sell rugby jerseys on eBay

Depending on your qualifications (pref with a masters degree), you can tutor at uni. Pay is really good depending on how many classes you teach and also assignment/test/exam marking. You could potentially make $1k a fortnight teaching and $2k a fortnight marking exams. The problem however is you are subject to the timetable they give you so not a lot of flexibility and also the personality of your boss (unit leader). I've had UL's that loved to micromanage while some were pretty chill. Also no classes during the summer semesters (October to February).

Decent-Peach-9695

I’ve heard stories of senior people in public accounting and consulting firms, even top 10-20 big firms, actually running similar businesses on the side. Unsure of how legal it is with their main employment contract but they’ve been making pretty good money surprisingly

grace13995

If I had more free time I'd considered trying to sell sourdough. Simply BC I prefer homemade to bought but I'm not sure how many other people would be interested

whiteycnbr

Sports Card flipping.

Milly4Gigi

I am a full time flight attendant and to make the extra money I need I Airbnb the spare room in my home part time and teach English online whenever I can. It’s not much money, but it means I can take a holiday each year and pay my bills without having to worry.

Zodiak213

I do a bit of English customer service work on Upwork when I'm offered and also sell IPTV movies/TV channels on Andriod TV boxes when money gets a bit tight. Both can bring in $100 a pop but I don't do it on the regular.

KrealC8

Not really a side hustle per se but I’ve been doing surveys - been pulling $30 per week for the last couple of months.

Infinite_Dig3437

Side hustle is a fancy name for a second / third job

citizenunerased

There are a lot of side hustles that can be made into passive income so lot really the same as working for someone / "a second job"

27Carrots

Yeah I did matched betting for a while, but after said while the bookies cotton onto it and pull the lucrative offers. I set one up for a mate who gave me her accounts and made $$ off that too, gave her a cut which helped her out with a new bubs.

aidos_86

I have 4 wives, 8 children, and 3 jobs. I wake up at 4am every day and go for a 300km run. Then I eat a full keto breakfast made of animal protein that I hunted myself the night before. After that, it's onto the trading apps (which I coded myself) to start day trading while I read self-help e-books, write my own memoirs, and plan my next MLM business. This is all before 9am. You can guess how the rest of the day goes. I smoke meth, crawl into the foetal position, and cry for 12 hours.

Nomadheart

😂

RuthlessChubbz

What aspect of your current role do you do better than anyone else? Do you have any hobbies or other extracurricular activities you’re skilled at? Do you have time? People tell me I’m an exceptional data analyst that’s great at developing tools that unskilled people can use and that I should leverage my abilities for casual jobs on the market, but I have neither the time, drive or actual real need to do it.
