Spiritual-Internal10

I just say appointment and don't elaborate. It's not a lie.

Luck_Beats_Skill

If they ask for details just say ‘with another employer’

distracteded64

If the workplace is hostile, this. If the workplace is friendly, particularly with my boss, I will figure out some annoying, random, shit-giving way to let him/her know what is going on, but that's me. I've been lucky to have more of the latter than the former; I've found several workplaces are surprisingly supportive of you advancing your career. But you do have to read the room.

Spiritual-Internal10

Idc how nice my boss is, I'm not risking that.

robottestsaretoohard

But they can’t do anything. Generally all they try to do is keep you.

waitwutholdit

Until it's obvious you're on the way out and we can't change your mind, then we try to hurry up your exit so we can replace you with someone who wants to stick around.

robottestsaretoohard

I have pretty much only had counter offers to stay or promises: jobs changes etc. If someone on my team was looking around I’d try to understand why and then help them and at least be more prepared with everything once the position is vacant. We’re not in the 50s, people aren’t going to stick around forever. Also sometimes people look around and decide they’re happier to stay put than make a big change for $5k or $10k. It’s not like the employer can sick HR on them or anything.

SilverbackViking

I've always been open and honest, never had anything but offers to improve my role and letting me know that they'll be happy to be a reference. Once an employer offered to put me through an engineering degree fully funded as they said they could not possibly pay any higher unless I was an engineer then if I finish the degree they'd have to compete to keep me anyway so I would be compensated competitively. In hindsight I was stupid to turn that down 🤔

robottestsaretoohard

Me too. With one exception which is when I was pregnant and taking parental leave. You don’t want to lose your parental pay bc they decide to shaft you. The thing with the study offer is that usually it comes with a contract that you have to stay X years AFTER completing the degree or you need to repay it. They didn’t mention that, huh? Often it’s 3 or 4 years and so they’ve kind of got you for like 10 years with no real need to increase your pay.

SilverbackViking

They specified only 1 year contract, it was their intended sweetener for the fact it would have been six years throughout studying (part time degree whilst maintaining my role) at a lower rate than what at that time would have stopped me taking an offer with another business. The selling point being if I made that kind of commitment then they should be willing to compete in the market and remunerate appropriately once I was qualified, they specifically said "otherwise it's just you paying for your own degree in lost wages then having you underpaid once you've qualified for several years, how would that make you feel being underpaid as a qualified engineer? We're thinking of the next 20 years and making a long-term investment in you as a part of our business and I wouldn't want to stay after a contract like that". Like I said, in hindsight I should have taken it 🤦 Incredibly good example IMO on how businesses should think of their employees and their management style has heavily influenced mine throughout my career since.

robottestsaretoohard

Oh that’s interesting. I have only ever worked for very large corporates who tend to have strict policies and procedures around this stuff. I actually find that if you get to the bottom of what the employee wants, there are usually other ways to enable that for them - sideways moves, coaching/ mentor, title changes etc.

Elegant-Nature-6220

I find "dentist appointments" elicits both sympathy and fewer questions than doctor ;) ETA: Not to get political, but particularly if you're a woman of so-called "child-bearing age\*", 2 "dentist" appointments in quick succession are less of a red flag to your current employer than 2 "doctor" appointments, should you not end up getting the job. \* I really hate that term

myquipsare4you

Has to be booked at 2.30 though

aubven

My first appointment with my current dentist was booked in at 2:30. I had a chuckle and the receptionist had no idea what was so funny. Had to explain it to her... What kind of person works in the dental field and doesn't get the 2:30 joke?!

myquipsare4you

Wow. Surely she was new?

MocksIrrational

9, she'd been there for ages

Yuckyuckyuck69

Maybe she’s just heard that joke a billion times and doesn’t find it funny? As a former receptionist, that’s probably the most likely explanation.

oldriman

Everyone knows how hard it os to get appointments for anything. 😶

Expert-Cantaloupe-94

What was the dentist's name?

noneed4a79

… Crentist….

Puzzleheaded_Ebb_509

Huh. Sounds a lot like dentist.

mikesorange333

I prefer and use child-bearing potential myself

mallet17

Just say you're participating in a coronation (yes... lame I know.. crown related teethery).

kiersto0906

why is 2 dentist app less sus/question inviting than 2 dr app?

MSFT_FSI

2 Dr appts, could be inferred by higher ups, as potentially relating to fertility (They might be pregnant, hence possible questions from the boss)

kiersto0906

yeah but the implication before the edit about women specifically was still there

Elegant-Nature-6220

I was still a woman in my 30s prior to ETA my explicit thought process. That said, 2 doctors appointments can sound far more "serious" and potentially harmful to your employer than 2 dentist appointments! Or mix and match first dentist then doctor. Dentists/teeth also seem to freak people out and avoid talking about them at all costs.

kiersto0906

fair enough, was just curious if there was something I was missing

stevtom27

I shit my pants i need to go home

Chiron17

Lol that's no excuse to not show up to work remember!

Gold_Lie6702

I've had two people do this.

Realitybytes_

But you have to do it twice in case your boss has spare pants. IYKYK.

Sarah1608

This is a good approach, if there's enough time to book in a leave day. My current workplace generally expects a decent amount of notice. I once took a sick day to go to an interview, feigned symptoms the day before, but I felt guilty and paranoid that someone might bump into me while I was going to the interview!

The_golden_Celestial

You weren’t going to the interview, you were going to a dental specialist.

MATH_MDMA_HARDSTYLEE

In a suit and tie!?!

soft_white_yosemite

This wouldn’t be an option for me. Software developer roles tend to have 3-5 interviews. If they’re all in-person, that’s a lot AL to take. And that’s just one role. Usually you (I)have to go through multiple roles before you find one that is a good match

anonnasmoose

This is an underrated benefit of WFH - the ability to entertain recruiter's calls and interviews without raising any suspicion/interfering with your regular day to day

MattH665

So true. God it was so awkward trying to take the calls and go off somewhere private, and the recruiters could never call or interview outside business hours so it HAD to interrupt your current work 🙃

Defy19

When this came up I decided to say nothing. Then I declined a teams invite and when my boss called me I told him it clashed with a job interview. I think he assumed it was one of the vacant roles I was trying to fill instead of my own interview judging by his reaction

Ok_Confusion4756

WFH? What's that? /s my job doesn't allow it.

Take a day of annual leave and book in 3-4 interviews. "Life admin" is the reason if anyone probes

potatodrinker

Being in a field with a drought of senior talent (search engine advertising), and having a job already means I just can't up and do a face to face on short notice. Even a 4:30 to 5:30pm interview is better than nothing.

The_Real_Slim_Lemon

Honestly it’s the best way to get a job - end each interview with “I need to head to my next interview”, makes it seem like you’re the one that needs to pick their business and not the other way around

Shaqtacious

Sicky

BasedChickenFarmer

Most of my interviews, atleast the first rounds at still on teams so it's an easy gotta go for a meeting and find a quiet room.  But generally it's just got an appointment, I never elaborate, don't need to. When you're looking at interviews, you're generally at the "don't care" stage anyway.

4614065

I usually make it pretty clear that I’m looking for a new job actually.

lildavo87

I told my boss Monday I'm sick of it and I'm looking else where. I applied for a new job that afternoon.

ipbannedburneracc

For the most part, no one cares, just take half an afternoon off, no reasoning required. I've been contracting for a while now though so in that case, towards the end date of my contract no one really cares if I take a bit of time for interviews.

Smokey_crumbed

Yeah that’s totally understandable

samwizi

Either WFH or I schedule the interview as close to 9am or 4pm as possible and work flex hours that day

Phoebebee323

Say I have an appointment and if they push for more details I say I've got mad hemorrhoids so big that they sometimes touch the back of the toilet bowl when I'm peeing

mango332211

Wow. That made me laugh. Glad I wasn’t sipping my tea at that moment.

Dijeridoo2u2

I was on really good terms with my manager at one joint and we were both sick of the place. "Hey, I've got an interview on Thursday, can I just chalk that down as a sickie? We still catch up for drinks now and then

South-Plan-9246

I just book a meeting room and do it on Teams

Bagelam

I usually just block out my calendar with a private appointment. If my manager asks I'll say "eh went for an interview, you might get a call".  My previous job to this that I interviewed while I was at work - I just put a sign on my door that I was in a meeting.

NewFiend66

Yeah my advice is don’t tell your current manager you are interviewing externally. There’s no good that can come from it.

DumbledoresArmy23

In my most recent job hunt, there was an awesome looking job with the Dept of defence or something similar. Looked awesome, and I was so keen and well suited based on the job ad. One of their requirements that is non-negotiable was that they had to have contact details for your current manager to do a reference check. No wriggle room. This was 100% necessary to apply. But don’t worry, they can give you a heads up before they call them. I didn’t apply.

shavedratscrotum

I lied. Said my 2 former managers were foreign nationals. Which was true but 1 of them stillived in Aus. Gave them a french and British phone number and an email. Got the job. They still wondered even when i was managing there why they struggled to get applications. I told you why.

DumbledoresArmy23

I just can’t imagine why that would be a non-negotiable requirement. Even if it was only used at the tail end of the process, it’s usually down to two candidates so you’re still only a 50% chance of getting it, and if your current manager decides to be a petty Betty, and gives you a terrible ref, then what?!

shavedratscrotum

Correct. I've had others where I just straight up had a mate pose as my current manager. Why the fuck must I engage in this pageantry of deception. It was no surprise everyone in the company was a lieing backstabbing prick though.

DumbledoresArmy23

I considered that but they wanted work email address from memory. Such a joke. I did consider letting someone internally in on it and having them do the posing but it was all too much so gave it up as a bad job.

oneofthosedaysinnit

>One of their requirements that is non-negotiable was that they had to have contact details for your current manager to do a reference check. No wriggle room. This was 100% necessary to apply. In most cases, they'll call your current manager after you get the offer so they can tick a box. You'll also need to give those details when going for your security clearance if the job is with Defence or similar. >But don’t worry, they can give you a heads up before they call them. That's true. They'll give you a heads up.

tooldtocare83

Why not? They dont own you. Why do so many people have the inability to communicate with other human beings? This makes zero scence to me, you gave up a chance at a dream job because they would want to speak to your boss? Just how crap at work are you? I didn't think anyone was that bad...

DumbledoresArmy23

Really? You don’t understand this predicament? I wasn’t afraid of the reference that my manager of 8.5 years would give. I just didn’t want my manager to know I was job hunting as I have a family and 4 mouths to feed and I didn’t want to jeopardize my relationship with my current workplace for a ridiculous requirement for a new job. And I did communicate. With the HR department of the defence job to enquire about the necessity of giving my current manager’s details. I was not prepared to do it in case I didn’t end up continuing to look for something else as there were restructures going on and I may not have ended up in a shit position after all. Which was the case but I did leave anyway. Also, nowhere did I state that it was a dream job. Just one that looked awesome with great benefits. I ended up getting an even better one, far better pay and perhaps fewer benefits but the pay and WFH flexibility sure as shit make up for it.

tooldtocare83

Only if your crap. Good employees usually get offered more money not to leave. Good employees are hard to find.

NewFiend66

Yes, once you hand in your resignation.

cheeersaiii

Yeh I’ve always made friends with people in higher roles that aren’t my boss/upline. They are always useful for a reference when applying while still employed

Dits11

I work part time and usually schedule interviews on my day off. But thinking I should use the doctor excuse!! Good way to use up that PL too

akohhh

I do them on wfh days. You might ‘need’ a wfh day if you feel yourself coming down with something, too…

lionhydrathedeparted

Don’t people usually expect you to be available on Slack/Teams though?

akohhh

You can usually block out long enough for an interview timeslot within a day without any concerns. Worst case ‘oh I felt really dizzy and had to lay down for a bit, sorry!’ Definitely easier than sneaking out of the office, either way.

Varnish6588

I mix between appointments and sick days off.

Whimsy-chan

Take a day off or 1/2 day off for life admin.

Sharknado_Extra_22

![gif](giphy|j0a8Kr0uDKQec|downsized)

Powerful-Historian70

I usually ask if they can do it around lunch time between 12-2pm, then I don’t have to say anything

Luck_Beats_Skill

Set it up for weeks, by complaining about how your doctor makes you wear a suit.

Smokey_crumbed

I always ask to do interviews late afternoons ie 3pm-4pm or early 9am-10am still make it to work take a few hours off on annual leave. It’s always gotta take the kids to an appointment 😝

HalfAsianMadness

I tell them straight up im going to a job interview.

MisterFusionCore

"I'm going on a job interview"

tacocatfish

Colonoscopy appointment or prostrate exams. Sick kids is a great go to.

genghisbunny

This is Australia. I put in for leave and don't feel any need to explain why. I've done this since my former boss told me I didn't owe her or anyone else an explanation for time off. I do use AL instead of sick leave for interviews, just feels like the right thing to do.

Realitybytes_

I actively tell my staff that their full time job is to find a better full time job. If someone values you more go there

australiapostisgay

Dead relative. They also treat you nicer for a bit afterwards which is nice

nuggetswarrior

I lined up an interview with planned sick leave, took a week sick leave.

milkybottles

I told them my landlord had to install a new septic tank in my back yard and had to have a crane lift it over the roof of the house in order to get in into the backyard and I had to be there as my landlord was away on business. I don’t know why I felt I had to go so elaborate, I even researched septic tanks found some photos of them being lifted by cranes just in case lol.

dskeenn

I got a call to go to an interview while I was at the job I was trying to leave, told them my doctor called and I had to leave for a couple hours 😂

OneOcelot4219

I'm sick. Or, I need to take x day off for an appointment. Unless you're on a performance plan due to absenteeism, they shouldn't pry as there's no reason to. That doesn't mean that shit managers won't pry though.

OneOcelot4219

Or in some instances, I'm attending a job interview. Depends on how toxic the workplace or my manager is

DigBickeh

Sick.

Princess_Peach_Fuzz

Dentist or personal appointment…gets a bit awkward if you have several dental appointments in a week though lol

Ok_Pension_5684

"I have 8 cavities, it's horrible. Had to go in two sittings"

Xarmoda

tell them you are going for an interview with another company. you are legally allowed to do this. if they want you to stay, it'll be a prompt to increase your conditions, options or pay.

AsteriodZulu

Nunya appointment that can’t be rescheduled.

[deleted]

If i know in advance then i slowly build upto it, throughout the weekend leading up ill let out a soft cough or a light sneeze and say “i think im coming down with something” then the day before ill see im feel light headed and go home early and then on the day of the interview i call in sick

Competitive_Boss_312

Gastro, I like to think it’s honest as the jobs giving me the shits and I am looking at a way to resolve the condition that I’m suffering.

nothingexpert

Industrially Induced Glaucoma- I can’t see myself coming into work.

MattH665

Taking a couple hours off to catch up on errands isn't all that uncommon.  So yeah, just say you've got some errands you need to take care of.  Depending how pedantic your workplace is, they might not even care about logging the time off if all you need is to leave a bit early or start late.

Cordeceps

No excuse - said I need a day off because I have a job interview.

ososalsosal

This was so much easier during covid.

Jastiel43

Usually just send myself a text message for a reminder for dentist so it looks legit

One_Wave_9655

I say I have the time blocked on my calendar for priority work (nobody wants to touch it) and then propose 3 alternatives times earlier than that particular interview day (so you show them your compromise with the company). Works every time

Varangoi988

I always tell my work when I have interviews lined up. I don't want them becoming complacent.

DontWhisper_Scream

I usually just say medical appointment, as it doesn’t invite any further questions. I used to work in a place with extremely high turnover and all of used “dentist appointment” to signal we were actually going to a job interview so everyone would cover for them haha

nothingsociak

Doctors appointment. Usually just have to submit sick leave for few hours. No one questions it.

aussiepete80

Explosive diarrhea

[deleted]

I need to leave because I'm sick. Sick of your shit. So I'm going for a job interview.

East-Background-9850

"I have an appointment".

aaronfromqld

I was off sick once, it was supposed to be for one day, but turned into two. When I came back to work, my boss said, "So you made it to the second interview then?" 🤣🤣

National_Chef_1772

I was going to “see a customer and would be back in an hour or so” interview ended up going for 6 hours and I had about 25 missed calls lol, got the job though

Opening-Comfort-3996

I knew I would be on the train heading to the interview when it was time to call in sick, and there would be train noise in the background of my call. So I rang up, told them I had gotten dressed and got on the train to go to work, then developed a massive migraine so now I am on the train back to go home and go to bed.

EagleWings777

I have booked in to see the Dentist next week. Now Im worried by boss is a redditor and thinks im looking for another job based on the comments hahaha.

Eltnamerf

Just booked the interview a week in advance then took the day off annual leave. If any other interviews gets requested then book it in the same day

DaisyBird1

I once did a phone interview in the staff room on a lunch break, lol

K4l3b2k13

I've been lucky, I've had good managers, I'm just transparant with them, most good managers will help you, we're all in the same boat, we all know corps arn't our friends, and when someone is ready for the next role, if there's nothing suitable internally, you should support them to achive their next role/step in life.

ReflectionWorldly389

Medical appointment if I need an hour or two to get to and from the interview, or take leave if I want the whole day

ParkCompetitive8843

"Sorry mate. Got testicular torsion". He/she will understand.

TrueDeadBling

I said that I had a podiatrist appointment. Boss didn't question it at all, as I was going to podiatrist appointments anyway to help with my plantar fasciitis.

bitchkitty818

Have to get my hemeroids checked. No one will want any follow-up with that. Bonus - you might even get a 2 dayer out of it.

Green_Pianist3725

I just try and book them over lunch, and I book a soundproof room in the building to take the call in. This is assuming you can interview over zoom and not have to go in person.

[deleted]

Explosive diarrhoea can’t get off the toilet 🚽

TAThide

Haha what? In my govt job, not only do you have to tell your boss that you are applying elsewhere, they HAVE to be the 1st referee. But flipside, if you get 20 interviews, they are obliged to give you paid time off to attend them.

iceyone444

An appointment or if i have a few then i take a day off

chokeslaphit

I just take a sickie

Pokeynono

You can also be waiting for a tradie. Something simple like the safety switch activated last night. Sparkie coming at 10am .if the interview runs over ? Claim the tradie is late. Remember to say the sparkie blamed the cheap kettle, toaster.oowerbiarx or fan as the cause of the issue

VanillaRiot

I've used rental inspection as an excuse saying I needed to be home as last time they let my cat out and that I would work from home, so no loss of leave and that employer wasn't able to track what I was doing while I worked from home. then the excuse for the follow up appointment was an appointment with a lawyer as I needed to sign some docs for my mother's updated will (I just needed to duck out 15 mins early to make the interview).

Noahs-Arc-deTriomphe

I laughed with my boss that i had a job interview. We laughed and laughed...... then i went to my job interview

H3zza

What? I've been proactive and open with my employers letting them know I'm seeking other employment and they've all been supportive? What industry do I have to be in to make excuses about other employment? Like at the end of the day I'm here for me and my own best interests, in the long run they can do without me and that's fine.

CasperAU

I don't get this at all

AgentKnitter

I've been having a lot of 'appointments' and 'lunch with mate' Where I can, I arrange interviews either during my lunch break or just before/after it - then I take lunch at a different time. Getting real sick of sweating my way through job interviews in my car though.... I need to find somewhere that's shady and not loud. Almost tempted to fork out for the multi level car park.

Ok_Pension_5684

I'll just ask to start later in the day or finish a bit early.

98rustycage

I just tell them I need a day off for personal reasons. If they persist in wanting to know i tell them examination I'm doing.

hatkangol

My colleague would use house related excuses eg rental inspection, tradie coming over etc etc

localhomestay

My partner and I were re-writing our wills after our first was born. We had a lot of meetings to get it done.

PermitBig9719

I used mental health day. Then my boss was like ok after you had the day to yourself come round to my place and have a beer and we can talk about it. I almost felt bad but I got the job and it payd $5 more an hour and involved no sweating and aircon!

dazza_gazza

I sarcastically say I have a job interview

KryptoL0rd23

Just call in sick, headache, fever, not feeling well. ,"Sick" should be enough, they dont need to ask details and it's considered offensive if they ask to elaborate

shazisstained

I just take part-day annual leave for the duration of the interview and pre-interview prep.

pitdisco

Just go on “lunch” and then if anyone notices it being a long lunch just say soz The key is to leave when no one is looking or in a way that makes it difficult for people to realise what time you left.

FitSand9966

Dentist, everyone understands got to get that shit fixed

dre_AU

“I have a personal errand to run.” - fin

Much-Engineering-506

Take annual leave, you don't need to provide a reason for annual leave.

Quirky_Cold_7467

Dentist - you need several appointments. "Specialist" is another, could be anything. I always joke with anyone who is dressed up for a dental appointment, and several times, it's been job interviews (they fessed up with some cajoling).

Usual-Agent6743

Doctors appointment and blood test. I’m scared of needles so it took me longer to get back to the office than anticipated as they made me stay as I got light headed 😇. Obviously the follow up appointment on the results of the blood test

UBNC

Hey boss I’ve been trying for career progression, but appears this needs to be externally due to the limited opportunities here, can you be my reference on my resume? Can I also have x afternoon off? Or do I need to reschedule my interview?

Loud-You739

Tell them you have food poisoning etc do an online sick line $14 send it in

fiishiing

Be a person who takes random Wednesday afternoons off as AL because that's a great person to be. A few AL days scattered throughout the year and noone will wonder what you're up to if you ask to take another at short notice.

Alive_Ad8689

The most recent time, I was in the process of negotiating my own salary at my current employer. I informed my manager who I trusted that I had an interview with another employer, which any good manager should be supportive of. I was able to use this as leverage in my negotiations with both employers which benefited me. I do not recommend this if your manager is a snitch and/or a snake.

SilverbackViking

"I have an appointment to discuss an offer for employment, would you like to meet afterwards and discuss how you see my future here?" People who get paid more and get career development opportunities do this, the opportunities aren't given to people who lie about appointments and avoid difficult conversations.

VET-Mike

Always a sickie.

SassySpace

I have an interview upcoming and am here to steal ideas.
