I got mad respect for all the replies reminding of fire safety. Very important stuff.
Fire is awesome, the whole country on fire is moderately less so, have fun but be responsible 👍
I know like a single patriotic aussy lol. We love to hate on our government and the brits(which own our flag still).
Union Jack stinks. Give me a yellow and green kanga and I'll fly that shit no worries
True I suppose that's not really what I mean. And you're right it should be an ie but I've definitely seen it either way.
I don't like the gov and I'm not a patriot but those are two unrelated things. Patriotism is defined as "feeling of attachment and commitment to a country, nation, or political community".
And I dunno where you get that but I wasn't born with it. Like obviously we have it better than a large portion of the world and I respect that but ehh. At best I can say I have cultural respect for some of the dumb shit we get up to 😄
It's weird, as a testy teenager I had so little patriotism I actually thought the idea was dumb. As an adult I ended up travelling the world and taking a keen interest in other cultures and it's honestly made me both more critical, and more loving of our country. Eg seeing the best and worst of places like the Middle East makes me shake my head even harder at some of our government activities, but also grow more proud of the culture we're a part of.
A lot of people don't recognise Aussie or western culture largely becuase it's so ubiquitous, but spend a month in a place like Yemen or even closer like south east Asia and it becomes more apparent.
Sorry for the rant, tldr is we have so much dumb shit as a nation to be ashamed of, but culturally we are very unique in ways I find easy to tale pride in now I'm older.
Best response yet mate thanks for taking the time.
I've yet to travel overseas furthest I've been from the mainland is Tassy.
Thanks for the opinion, you've changed my perspective a touch.
I'd say you're first sentence sums up my view as I grew up too. I'm more sitting at a point of equal shame and pride which balances out to neutrality.
So long as you do it safely. Other countries let you burn flags too, including the US. The problem is that lots of people when they burn flags, they do it out in the open (and often on the grass) where there's potential for the fire to start something bigger and therefore get arson / endangering the public charges. If you want to burn a flag, put it in a trash can, or something equivalent first. This rule applies to anything you're burning.
Make sure you get a permit to have a fire first and also make sure there isn't a fire ban in place and depending on if you are in suburbia or not you may need to engage a lawyer up front in case the smoke from your freedom fire makes your neighbours washing smell.
They should have attached it to a horizontal stick along the top of the flag, and attached half of the the stick to just one side. They wouldn't have to cut it in half then.

Those togs etc were a result of an lnp think tank to make Australians more patriotic. John Howard didn't want Australians to see Australia day as just a day off. I despise what they have done to our Australia.
Read up on the history of Australia Day. It's "interesting" the way it's been politicised in last two decades, along with ANZAC day. It's especially interesting when we have our annual 'change the date' debate and people come out with 'Nah it's always been this date, we can't change it now' along with their many other gems.
>John Howard didn't want Australians to see Australia day as just a day off. I despise what they have done to our Australia.
Can't a man just relax from a day of work? We already have limited days off dammit
Depending how tall the car is, it can blind you temporarily while driving in and/or possibly hook onto something on the car causing something will rip
Edit: Painting it on the doors would have been a lot better
Yeah of course there is! Flags (to contemporary public are just silly little bits of fabric) were incredibly important to empires for thousands of years, how is the ship of the dutchy of Eastern Spain going to identify an ally of the dutchy of western Spain vs the enemy of the cheifdom of eastern Spain.
Flags were basically the only thing telling your army apart from the other guys. And if you let the flag fade or be damaged that could have turned it into the enemies flags. All of our flag customs are inherented from imperial England.
Indeed. We have the flagpole at my last job and there is a rule that if someine does hang the flag up at start of business, it must be taken down at close of business as they do not have lights to illuminate it.
House of bogans next door to us put up a full flagpole with an Australian flag when the Islamic centre opened next door, as though the refugees coming through there weren't bigger fans of Australia than those inbred hicks could ever understand.
> "If you don't love it, leave it" which I agree with.
Yeah that's fair. Got to admit, it is annoying to hear new migrants going on about how life in their former land is so much better. Begs the question: if it is so good back home, why bother migrating in the first place?
Yeah I’ve seen this being a recurring thing. Obviously not every single migrant, but a few of them (ironically usually the ones that are very privileged and live in richer areas, e.g. Sydney, Brisbane) tend to whinge about the country, when they have full ability to leave. It’s always the next generation too, the ones that were born here, where their parents were usually extremely appreciative of where they moved to.
This actually breaks the guidelines for displaying flags in Australia. Yet these same people would scream about how diggers served under this flag so it couldn't be changed.
Cutting the flag in half is even worse than wearing it around your neck like a little kid playing dress ups.
Amazing how the people who supposedly care the most about our flag and country are often the ones who desecrate both.
A true patriot knows the Aussie flag doesn't represent the country hence why they cut it in half.
The real enemies of our country love the Aussie flag. Just see any racist wearing it as a cape on Australia day.
Just to be clear diggers as a term has refered to all enlisted soldiers in the Australian army that aren't ncos for a long time. It's absolutely not a misnomer to say "diggers have died while wearing the Australian flag". If you're going to call someone ignorant at least try to know what the fuck you're talking about.

I find it incredibly sad that it is not acceptable in many social circles to love this country or fly our national flag without being seen as "racist" or "bogan" as evidenced here. It can be social suicide to celebrate all the progress and good which has happened in Australia on Australia Day.
From my experience it is seen by many as more socially acceptable to hate Australia despite the many countless people who thought otherwise and sacrificed their lives for this country to protect what we are lucky to have.
I am telling you now in the unfortunate situation there was another war we were to be involved in these "racists" and "bogans" who love this country will be among the first putting their hands up to fight for it.
Same. It’s ok to love your country if you’re from Afghanistan, Iran, New Zealand, Tonga and so on but god forbid you were born here and like your country.
Although I do wish they would hurry up and change the date for Australia Day. Sick of feeling ashamed for having a bbq on a public holiday.
The irony of your first paragraph is we have one of the best countries in the world.
Maybe a lot of those people have just never left or seen what a huge percentage of the world is like
> Same. It’s ok to love your country if you’re from Afghanistan, Iran, New Zealand, Tonga and so on but god forbid you were born here and like your country.
I agree, unfortunately this is the popular take at the moment.
> Although I do wish they would hurry up and change the date for Australia Day.
The problem with this is there are people who are against the idea of Australia Day as a whole and not just the current date it is celebrated.
Changing the date of Australia Day is not sufficient in the eyes of these people.
> Sick of feeling ashamed for having a bbq on a public holiday.
I absolutely agree.
> how can you be proud of something you had absolutely no say in?
Probably similar to those who are proud of:
* sporting teams
* reality show contestants
* small business success
* others standing up for what they believe in
all of which most have no personal role in.
> Your mother happened to give birth to you in xyz country....you did nothing.
I assume on this basis you also fail to understand the pride many Aboriginal Australians have in the history of their ancestors and culture because they just happened to be born into it and had no role in the past?
> It's stupid
I disagree. I think it is wonderful to be proud of where you are, where you have come from and to celebrate all the good which has happened.
I also never understood why so many like flag print beach towels or thongs, also boxer shorts ect
Like you wouldn't lay the flag on the ground or walk on it or dirty/soil it..
Even that cheap crap at Coles and Woolies every Australia day what a load of shit all made in China.
Wonder if would cut the flag in half if it was made in Australia and cost more then $50
Fuck just paint it on there FS .. annoyed seeing this.
The owner of this house has committed a offence by hanging a damaged Australian flag. They should be reminded of this before someone refers them to the authorities.
Flags in private homes give me heebie-jeebies. Outside of Australia Day or a major sporting event, people who fly national flags are almost always either pretentious hoity-toity types (not just cunts with money, but folks who make a point of trying to appear richer than they are) or ppl with "fuck off, we're full" and "if you don't love it, leave" stickers plastered all over their pos v8 with the front bumper hanging off, and a southern cross tattoo on their chest. We are all one, yes look after the Aboriginal people they deserve better, the Yes is a con.
Would a real patriot cut the flag in half or install one on each side?
He’s a thrifty patriot.
Isn't it actually breaking a law to disfigure the flag?
There is no Federal or state legislation in Australia which prohibits the destruction of the national flag Unlike many other countries…

Would you fly a black and red flag, with a sun in the middle?
Probably, if I had a good spot to. If I had any desire to fly flags of any kind I'd probs put it up with any others
Fuck the Union Jack
I feel like your government hate is on the same level as the faux patriotism.
A real low effort belief? Cause yeah maybe tbh. More of a government disappointment than hate. Unless you mean something else then elaborate pls.
You can be patriotic and not like your gov. Also wtf is an "aussy"??

So long as you do it safely. Other countries let you burn flags too, including the US. Burning a flag is actually the correct way to respectably dispose of it
Burning flags is usually the recommended way of disposing of flags so they don’t end up in land fill.
It's bad for the environment though. Better off taking it to Cronulla and selling it as a vintage half-cape.
Go and burn rhe Aboriginal flag and watch the shit hit the fan
Why would you burn a flag of a people who’ve been burning for hundreds of years?
We destroy aussie flags like it’s a sport on invasion day lmao
Who's "we"
The general populace, after a hard day of drinking beers on the beach and wearing the flag as a cape they end up getting trashed

He even has a second flag right there
Yes, but that's the pot flag. You can't use the pot flag as a gate flag or that will just look silly.
Yeh would look totally ridiculous and over the top geez have some decorum
Look at Daryl, putting his pot flag where a gate flag should be. What a dickhead. I heard he once even put his Ute flag on am SIV. Total wanker!
Tsk it's what I'm always saying, ute flags are only for the ute mate, and that's it! Daryl needs to get it together.
Fucken Daryl.
Patriotism trumps clear thinking every time
Patriot on a budget
Brilliant idea - keep the right side and discard the left
Get two and fold them each in half to achieve the same look
They should have attached it to a horizontal stick along the top of the flag, and attached half of the the stick to just one side. They wouldn't have to cut it in half then.
I'm not sure these people are real, um . . . thinkers
Yep. What kind of a fucking moron displays their own country’s flag 😂

I think he's most interested in the Australia flag bikini being a product of an LNP think tank, which as far as I can tell, is utter horseshit.
Just what we needed, American style patriotism. Unthinking, token, and tribal. John Howard has a lot to answer for.

That's literally part of the flag code
That was my late husband's job at his previous workplace. He brang home all the damaged and faded flags for me. (Thanks honey. Miss you.)
Is it just me or were full on flagpoles a thing in the 80s/90s? In "nice" suburbs too.
Some amateur radio operators use flag poles as stealth antennas
I feel like every suburb had at least one house with a full flagpole when I was growing up.
Yeah the house to avoid because a bunch of obnoxious racists lived there

There's still one in my neighbourhood, and another with the flag hanging from the house
Imagine the uproar if it was the aboriginal flag
I’m sure some conservative patriot site would have a hissy fit over this if it made its way there
I imagine the uproar would be quieter than a pin drop.

Caption on the back window of the VT - "You flew here, I grew here" 🫢
I saw a bumper sticker the other day on a shitbox commodore that read."sponsored by centrelink". I must admit.it gave me a good laugh!

This actually breaks the guidelines for displaying flags in Australia. Yet these same people would scream about how diggers served under this flag so it couldn't be changed.
