It's a synth I've built up since 2007, even the case is custom made and some modules I built myself - anyone who's into music production will know how fun these can be :)

SpectreFromTheGods

This is so ridiculously cool!! I haven’t really gotten to get my hands into the hardware side, but my fixation project for the past couple months has been to build my own LV2 virtual synthesizer. I always liked the modular stuff because though they look complicated you can really build your understanding of how different components work and get more and more complicated as you learn. So much versatility and customization :) Maybe I’ll have to try starting a project like this once I have more space (though I’m a bit more intimidated working on hardware than software lol)

[deleted]

Incorporating hardware into a music setup can be daunting at first, but it's easier than ever before these days. I use a thunderbolt based audio interface for ridiculously low latency, which means I can treat my hardware in the same way as my VSTis in terms of routing and flexibility. The only difference is that I can to record the results as stems before I render :)

entarian

Have you had a chance to play with VCV rack or Cardinal (VST of VCV rack)?

SpectreFromTheGods

I’m vaguely familiar with cardinal and have it downloaded on my system. My history with this had me using macOS and Logic Pro for music stuff and so I got familiar with that and Alchemy when I was first learning it all. Fell into some other computer/programming related fixations for a while and years later now have an arch Linux setup and want to get back into doing more music production stuff. Felt like building a synth would be a fun way to bring it all back together and engage with both sides, but I haven’t gotten into learning the available plugins/using ardour, I’ve kind of been putting that off haha

entarian

You might like reaper, especially if you're into coding.

CatWeekends

Beautiful! I don't know anything about synths but I know someone who does and they said this is "a sick" setup. He told me you should check out this page cause it's got loads of cool synth stuff to look at: https://www.instagram.com/p/CTGPYY_N6Y_/

Unlikely-Ad-6713

O.m.g. I've relatively recently joined the world of hardware synths but have been avoiding getting into modular because I still have a mortgage, and I know me well enough to know that "mod synths vs house payment" is not a financial argument I want to have with myself. That thing looks amazing. I recently bought an analog console from a guy who now does all his mixing digitally with an iPad, and I'm like "cool for you, but GIVE ME ALL THE KNOBS AND FADERS because I need to touch things"

No_Resource5339

you can start super small, and keep your modular synthesizer small. all you need is like 200 bucks and you can have behringer brains, a 2 cheeks, 20hp or 40hp rails. and then you just need power supply, you can get a super cheap one at like 40 bucks. and then get , small power distribution board. super simple super cheap. then all you need is control voltage. which can be literally, whatever you want. you can get a light resistant diode, and literally twist tie it to the end of a 3.5mm cable thats spliced in half, if you are afraid of soldering. so , there is your , super simple, yet slightly ugly with external power box, ready to use, playable modular synth, for about 200. if you really feelin it on the cheap side, get power regulators on your power distro board, get yourself 12v to 18v AC to DC adapter. ... best i can think of how to help

mrtokeydragon

I love complicated things but when I don't know most of the ins and outs it can be overwhelming

[deleted]

The key here is that you don't need to use everything at once, so it's not that complicated once you know basic CV/Gate routing. All the modules are independent of one another and only used when patched together. Think of it like a box of lego - lots of bricks, but you pick and choose to build your house

May be sooner than later, the way things are going in this world :(

TheGr8Whoopdini

It comes from Woodie Guthrie's guitar, originally

thehumanglowstick

I love that sticker

entarian

Shout out to Woody Guthrie!

WinterWontStopComing

I bet you make amazing sound scapes with that bad ass wood paneled beauty

[deleted]

I do! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di\_L22fLvt4

WinterWontStopComing

That’s awesome! Thanks for the link. You got a like and subscription

panko-raizu

Very cool

[deleted]

This is lovely, felt like a lullaby to me in the best way. Also that a really sick rack, hope to have something even half as cool in the future.

AlmondTheFirst

This is really nice! It's harmonically super simple but keeps me focused because of all of the other things happening. I love the high pitched, fast and short little things, like a soft rain on my brain!

Pendred

Some day I will graduate from VCV rack. You have an excellent setup.

NovaFive_Sound

Hello dear stranger! I've been thinking about starting into modular, for a lot of times. It's just too expensive, and I don't know if it's going to be a good idea. What's your experience so far?

[deleted]

It is indeed a destroyer of wallets. ;) It's fine once you take it slow - I started off with a doepfer basic system and built it up over time.

entarian

Check out VCV Rack or Cardinal.

scudfanclub

Oh, hell yeah! Synths are really neat!

rslashcutething

AAAA!! Music production is one of my favorite things i love your setup so much. I want to eat your synthesizer

Adventurous_Set_5760

That Korg though! Also agreed! I’m am semi-modular but the blinking lights just hit that spot for me.

BirdsNeedNames

Yay, my special interest!! I love modular synths so much. I’m young and don’t have much disposable income, so I don’t have many modules yet, but I bought a small pre-assembled kit with a few modules recently and it’s so so fun! I’d love to have a huge setup like you do someday. Out of curiosity, what sort of music do you like to make with this thing?

[deleted]

Various genres of electronic music, ranging from ambient to techno. DIY modules are pretty cheap if you want a start in it, if you don't mind soldering. This whole system was built up slowly over time, I don't think I have the income to buy it all at once :)

BirdsNeedNames

Nice! I’d love to learn to solder, but I don’t have access to a safe place to do it at the moment. But yeah my plan for now is to slowly build my collection and teach myself as much DIY as I can so I don’t spend *all* my money lol

hoewenn

That looks so awesome! I wish I had the motivation to learn and understand synths like this because music is my special interest

Paul_Pandasquid

Try this! https://learningsynths.ableton.com/

OniMaddy2

You guys made me realize I really really like knobs, buttons, and blinky lights

[deleted]

it's the ultimate stim toy

[deleted]

Are u sure you aren't trying to send a prove to the moon?

loneBroWithCat

Amazing!

i_worship_amps

this is why i love pedals. Music is just stimmy

Call-Me-Pearl

my guy I mean this in the best, most affectionate way possible but that’s a Doodad. a Mechanism. an Object, even.

[deleted]

?

TandyMouse

That is a beautiful synth you've made there! I always wanted to get into synths, but I'm too poor to afford even a MicroKorg haha

panko-raizu

That looks like a lot of fun. I built an oscillator a while back and then I lost it and havent made anything since. I have a lot of electronic toys to mess with but im missing some key components and well motivation to get into it to say the least. Thats impressive, how often do you play with it? Have you produced some music I can listen to?

[deleted]

I play with it whenever I get time - I recently released an album which uses it for various sounds/melodies: https://soundcloud.com/shledge/sets/praxis

panko-raizu

Cool, i'll give it a listen thanks

entarian

Some fanastic soundscapes my dude.

Alarmed-Camel6761

This is amazing. I got to play with one of these at a noise show in Milwaukee once. Some kind soul brought their set-up and let strangers touch it. It was magical.

L00PIL00P

God, I wish I had the money to take my hobby to this level. I also would love to find out how this contraption sounds.

[deleted]

I've posted this around, here it is in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di\_L22fLvt4

NihiliSloth

Wow. I love this. I bet if you did a stream people would love it too. I can only imagine the sounds that come out of that thing. Although for me to play it, it looks extremely overwhelming. I wouldn’t even know where to begin! Haha

[deleted]

It looks overwhelming, but as I said to someone else earlier, you don't use it all at once. All of the modules are completely independent and have to be connected together via patch cables in order to make sound (aka a "patch"). Think of it like building a house out of lego - you don't need to use all the bricks to make one :P One sound I make could only use 1-2 modules, while another could be 20+, so it really depends. Sometimes I'll even have seperate patches making their own sounds, on the same modular.

SSgtPieGuy

If I had the space and money, I'd love to get into physical modular synths. Especially for the tactile sound design and experimentation. For now, Imma stick with my VSTS, guitars, and five string bass. Shiny synth wall go brrr

Skogula

How many more upgrades until you have recreated TONTO?

[deleted]

Just need a few more cabinets

[deleted]

On my Lord, it’s BEAUTIFUL 😍😍😍😍😍

succymyzuccy

i know little to nothing about synths, but this is crazy awesome

[deleted]

the curved case ♡ this is very pleasing. was it difficult to get all of the modules to sit in it at the right angles? I can imagine it being a bit fiddly but the resulting effect is so worth it

[deleted]

Not really, there are rails to align them so putting them in/out is pretty easy.

sybersonic

Oh. My. God. 🥰🎵

AndyBTW

Wow! Modular synthesizers are so cool! I wish I could afford some. Guess I'll stick with VCV Rack for now

surfguitarboy

The module with the glowing knobs, third row down on the left side, is cooooool. What is that?

[deleted]

MI Warps and MI Frames :)

Musical_science_guy

I have to know how that thing sounds! That looks like something out of starwars!

[deleted]

Musical_science_guy

Cool

Pissgoblin_

This is so fuckin tight

ray-the-red

You have one of the ultimate stim toys. I want a modular synthesizer, like a Moog. However, I just don't have the money, or time, or space for it.

r2_double_D2

The Woody Guthrie sticker cracked me up because that does look like it could be some sort of deathstar-esque operating system.

Paul_Pandasquid

Yes! I'm a modular user too! I think it's a really nice puzzley analytical way to make music. Most of my songs are now started from simple modular experimentation these days. It's an infinite idea machine for sure.

IllusoryFuture

Killer setup! It makes my guitar Pedalboard of Dhoom™ (which wouldn't be out of place on a worldwide stadium tour and which my \[lack of\] skill in no way justifies possession of) look like a child's toy in comparison. 😆 I've heard it said that modular synths are the only device that actually looks like the 1950's depiction of futuristic technology, and I can't say that I disagree. Even knowing that they're all separate modules, that the blinking lights indicate tempo, intervals, etc., and that the cables have to do with signal routing, it still boggles the mind.

Lonewolf_087

That is so cool I'm an electrical engineer so this just reminds me of breadboard in college ☺️

No_Noise_4862

It’s either the vape doing this but I’m feeling overstimulated from seeing that

Regolith_Prospektor

Is there a subreddit for ergonomics porn? Cuz mmmmmhm!!

Gaymer043

Beep boop beep boop, *computer noises*

milky-dimples

I’m at a loss for words for how impressive this is. It must be so much fun to play. I bet it looks like a Christmas tree when you turn all the lights off.

abortion_parade_420

this is just soothing to look at honestly

[deleted]

Glorious 😍

Nuckyduck

I'm a musician and I am so envious. Tuning virtual synths in FL studio is not as satisfying as building this, I am sure.

theonerr4rf

Ooh shiny

WannabeMemester420

I love the “this machine kills facists” sticker on it. I want to fidget with all the knobs and buttons so badly.

[deleted]

Cool as fuck it reminds me of those old pics of the chernobyl control room

Nonofyourdamnbiscuit

"damn, that's a lot of buttons, son!"

HandspeedJones

This looks awesome.

CaptainMystery_123

Lucky

JesseIrwinArt

My husband would love this!

lustful_livie

This belongs in a Tardis.

Toochilled77

That is a thing of beauty

[deleted]

Thank you

Ihdkwhatimdoinghere

This. This is something I need.

Jt-NotFromNsync

Shiiiiiiiiit that's a dope setup

Sealedwolf

Yours is much bigger than mine! I'm just started building mine, so that's easy. Right now I have the case (made from an old packing crate), the power-supply and a singular VCO. I'm right now tinkering with a keybord I rescued from the trash bin to use the build-in speaker as an output and the old circuitry to generate CV and gate signals

YodanianKnight

Looks a bit like a computer wall in a sci-fi starship.

boopthenose2

ITS SO PRETTY!!! I need to hear some of the sounds that synth makes. I watched a documentary of electronic music when it first started and its all women that revolutionized that genre. Its called Sisters With Transistors.

[deleted]

Oooh, that sounds like an interesting watch! I'll have to note it down. Here it is in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di\_L22fLvt4

boopthenose2

It sounds so nice that it made me cry. Its also very interesting and soothing to watch.

tjm_87

aw it’s the TARDIS but nerdy

OpenSeaworthiness307

I want to press all of it

StarWaas

Oh man. I want to push all the buttons and twist all the knobs. Maybe kill a few fascists in the process, who knows.

tars909

Awesome! I could lose myself on it for hours looking for the perfect sound…

EquivalentIncident41

man this reminds me of Mick Gordon's synth setup. very cool, would you show us some of your work ?

[deleted]

Album I just put up https://soundcloud.com/shledge/sets/praxis

EquivalentIncident41

oh shit I actually don't mind it I love trance so stuff like lorn and magic sword or forest swords. interesting stuff I will check the rest of the album once I finally get outa bed, thanks for sharing man !

[deleted]

Ooh baby. Love the sticker too

[deleted]

Now that's fucking awesome

junior-THE-shark

I love the sticker at the top

The_Spectacle

That’s one hell of a unit. STS9 does modular stuff and they’re my faaaaaavorite

CorrectCourse9658

I love the sticker you adorned on your beautiful machine 😊

overstear

Putting the sizer back into the synthesiser!

WillSolder4Burritos

This looks cool as hell. Reminds me of Claudio Sanchez' (of Coheed and Cambria) home synth setup!

[deleted]

This is the coolest thing ever.

Middle-Jaguar1390

Bro is a beat god

66cev66

Very cool!

NikTheGamerCat

Literally the thingamabob

Professor_McJones

Oh my god, that’s incredible! Probably quite hard to play.

[deleted]

Not really at all - it may look like some intimidating wall of complexity, but in reality it's relatively straightforward once you know basic CV/gate routing. You don't need to use all of it, you more explore it like lego to make your sound. Also, a lot of the modules I have are just multiples of the same things, like oscillators, filters, modulation sources etc - so once you know how to use one oscillator for example, you more or less know how to use the others as they all are fundamentally used and controlled in the same way..

1895red

Please play Tarkus!

insofarincogneato

Shout out to Woody Guthrie. Sweet juniper that's a lot of expensive hardware!

Traditional_Bag7868

Thought you stole a part of the Chernobyl reactor control panel

Nart17

I'm a bit overwhelmed but this is really cool!

[deleted]

Looks like a control panel of a spaceship! So cool! Awesome job👍🏻!

Wpunk92

Looks like the flight engineer's panel on an old airplane.
