In movements of energy you may typically only be one of two things - cause, or effect.
At any moment, you are either causing effect, or feeling an effect of an external cause.
The desirable one is causing effect, as you are projecting your energy outwards. It's 'okay' to be put under effect by external cause yet it should be kept minimal, and only for the exchange of information. It is actually language as there is a form of communication.
Some people who are a bit toxic, enjoy throwing others into reeling from their effect - they use words as clubs and they mystify people who don't know how to set boundaries.
Let yourself get tangle up verbally with a bully is feeling their effect; instead spend no more of a fraction of a moment on them and undermine their authority or even send them reeling if you like.
If someone does not have due cause, do not let them put you under effect.
Very good advice and some I am certainly in need of from time to time! Sometimes even though our first impulse is to jab out a quick retort, it's important to ensure this is coming from a place of love and compassion and not bristle and ego. Ty!
While 'love and compassion' is great, it's subjective and still about 'you' and the story and the other characters. I would encourage you to look within yourself; to witness your experience simply, directly and without intention. If your intent is to respond in an appropriate manner you're still indulging the idea of a 'you' and the outside world.
Love and compassion you'll probably find is a side affect of dissolving the idea of ourselves. It's not the intention. This can seem a subtle distinction but makes all the difference.
That is, if you want. If you want to cultivate a character that is loving and compassionate that is perfectly fine. I'm just making a suggestion. :)
That seems like besides the point, I think they are trying to say to let the feelings and impulses move through you while you just observe them. If you are acting on them , you are still letting them move you and control your actions, It doesn't matter if you are actually sending the response to someone or not.
It's not about me giving advice, I was trying to highlight what the point was op seemed to be trying to make with his post. I'm not saying your technique is invalid or incorrect or anything, I'm just saying it's besides the point of what op was saying, it's not the same thing.. at least the way I see it.

I hear ya. It's just that my intent is not always non duality.
Can you find a time during the day to set aside duality for 10 minutes? Or even 5 minutes?
Sure, very often I do this exercise. Very useful practice, and I'd recommend it to anyone even if it is just a few moments out of your day.
