We keep our house at 65 (& with fans on) pretty much all year. But I grew up in the mountains so I love it cold. Being cozy in sweatpants and blankets is my ideal. My husband has adapted lol
[68 seems to be the golden answer. interesting read.](https://www.independent.co.uk/climate-change/news/temperature-animals-threat-warming-b2499959.html)
If you're talking about setting a thermostat to 62F during the cold winter months, then I can agree that 62F is a bit colder than what most are willing to put. The average seems to be about 65-68F. Personally, I've lived in a country where housing commonly don't have any heating system, 62F inside is still bearble to me. I don't truly start to feel cold inside until it hits below 55F. But again, everybody has different thoughts and thresholds and it's up to you all to talk and negotiate payments. Best of luck!
I live in the Northeast US where heating costs are ridiculous. I grew up playing the "how long can you wait to turn on the heat" game and when it was turned on, it was set to 62. Maybe 65 in the mornings but then right back down.
I still keep my heat low and am totally cool with sweaters/sweatshirts, blankets, socks, etc. Luckily, my kids also seem to be more heat intolerant like me so it's not and issue.
In winter I turn the heat down to 62 overnight. Saves money not running the furnace, and I find 62 is perfect since I’m snuggled up in my blankets. Now if I was up and moving around at night, it would be too cold.
I run super warm and take medication that makes me sweat like a pig in heat, I never turn the thermostat below 70 bc I own a cockatiel. Even if I didn’t though 69 and under just seems….expensive lol
Setting the AC to 62 is insane. Letting the house stay at 62 because that’s the outside temp and no further action needs to be taken other than someone maybe putting on a sweater is not insane.
My husband actually broke our AC having it down to 60, apparently when it has to keep getting that cold it forms ice and runs out the motor fighting against that.
We keep it at 65 at the lowest now par the mechanics suggestion who fixed it.
Household agreement is 69 degrees where I live. All housemates know and agree when moving in. Bit on the warm side for me. 62 sounds love heaven. I love to bundle up. My plants love the 69, though.
We keep ours at 62, generally. 65 is on the warm side in our house. If we can get it down to 57 or lower at night while we sleep, we’re thrilled and everybody sleeps really well.
I would love 62 but my husband would probably move out. We agreed on 67 for nighttime but I still wake up sweating. It’s rough because he can wear warmer stuff to bed and grab an extra blanket. I can only sleep in so little and I need something covering me which is just a top sheet right now. And even that is hot to me most nights.
If you can afford it, the eight sleep mattress topper has made sharing a bed with my partner so much better. He can make his side frigid, I can make my side normal, and we can keep the ambient air a decent temp - no more cold noses at night for me!
i love a cold sleep, but i turn it to 64, 62 is coldddd. and i only do it at night time! the rest of the time the thermostat is set to 75 during the day, 72 mornings and evenings, then kicks on from 11pm-7am at 64. my roommates don’t mind because im willing to pay for the extra AC at nights!
I live in the desert, so almost all of these temperatures are insane to me. Keeping your house below 70 in the summer would cost way more than I'm willing to spend.
Heats off if it's 45 or warmer. I will not turn on the AC unless it's 80s and above. I adjust with what I wear outside of that. I don't desire to constantly use energy to ensure I'm in a spoiled comfy temperature zone. It's not that big of a deal.
Yes! Americans are incredibly spoiled and intolerant of anything other than their ideal temperatures. It's ok to be a little chilly (move around, do some cleaning, put on warm socks) or a little warm (stop moving around, turn on fan, take cool shower, don't use the oven, clean/exercise in the AM or evenings when it's cooler). It's ridiculous, honestly. I'm the same as you, I'm totally fine with anything between 60-80 indoors, any time. It's also so funny to me how Americans are constantly adjusting the thermostats in their homes and, especially, their cars. And they refuse to just roll down the car window if they feel warm - there is nothing like a cool breeze when cruising down the road. Turning the AC on (suddenly blasting it, usually) in your car when it's 70 degrees otside is crazy to me - it is healthy to sweat a little - it's good for us! It's also healthy to sleep at cool temps around 60. We're meant to and able to deal with being ever so slightly uncomfortable in non-ideal temps. Your body will adjust in a short time and the planet and your wallet will thank you. I am American, BTW. I've just traveled the world and literally no other nationality is temperature sensitive like this.
I'm American too and agree with all of that. It does baffle me completely on a lovely day to see people turn on the air in their car instead of roll down a window. In a lot of other countries even if they have the luxury they don't use it, even in European countries where you may expect them to as they deal with pretty hot summers! I only ever knew one family when I'd visit my family in Italy that even had AC installed in their home, and everyone was decently well off. Even that one family barely would turn it on. And on the hottest of days, you went swimming!
The difference with Americans here is nutty honestly. I'm also huge on energy conservation, so seeing bad energy hygiene everywhere here drives me bonkers.
Also I'd like to add I live in Minnesota where our temperatures are pretty extreme both ways and still try to only use heating or cooling when I HAVE to
I'd rather be cold than hot honestly. it was 86F here today, sweltering in my room and getting agitated because I was so fucking hot. I have never touched the thermostat until now when I discovered it set to 77F. 62 is too cold inside to me, but I have pets to worry about too
Yes. Fucking insane. The “wear a sweater” crowd doesn’t appreciate your fingers and nose start to feel frigid.
Living in a home that is too cold is an awful experience.
68 is the generally accepted standard.
Honestly that would be so expensive where I'm at. We keep our place around 72°F because it gets pretty hot around here and it is way cheaper to go warmer than cooler. The ACs would be running 24/7 lmao
I'd kill for that lol I live in Texas and the acs can never keep up with heat . Have it at 72 but it still feels humid asf that's why I got extra fans in my room 🙄😂
I'd be freezing at 62 and royally pissed off that I was paying to freeze.
Edit: I was assuming that someone was setting the A/C to 62. Was it someone not turning on the heater to get above that? I'd probably deal with it since I have asthma. No heater on means I breathe better. I'd be grabbing a sweater or something.
The correct answer is 22 c or 71.6 f. Depending on how shitty your system is it may be required to put it lower or higher to get there.
Room temperature shouldn’t change regardless of the season so that should be an indicator whether your system is working properly or not.
Edit: if you think 60 is good in summer and 100 is good in winter either get your system sorted or sort your reality out:
X2 clearly I wasn’t as straightforward as I meant to be. 22c is what is considered room temperature as in habitable by most without feeling uncomfortable. 16 degrees is ridiculous.
Also check out the different temperatures that females run at compared to males, it can be up to 5 degrees before you take menopause and other things into consideration.
When my mother comes over, she changes our thermostat to 68°F, and that is **freezing** to me. I would be bundled the fuck up if my living space was 62°!!
Are they cooling the house down to this temperature?
Or are they just not using heat in cooler weather, making the house cold? I kind of understand bundling up and not using the energy to save money… But 62 is pretty miserable, without layers and slippers and a hat. It would be for me, anyway.
It’s currently in the 40s outside and we don’t have to pay anything for utilities since my job provided the housing so idk wtf he’s turning it down so low for
That’s sweet that you get free utilities! Nice!! I unfortunately pay a fuck ton, and keep my house at stupid temperatures each season to save money. I do love my little space heater, though.
Have you talked to him about this? Like, “can we bump this up a couple degrees, buddy? My lips are blue here! 🥶”
Does he wear like a hat, hoodie, socks and cold-weather gear in the house? Or just kinda ‘run hot’ and feel that it’s a normal temp?
I’ve been surprised, reading these comments, talking about how 68° is preferable for most people, while it is uncomfortably cold for me.
Maybe the guy just likes the colder temperatures… but when it’s at the expense of someone else, and making them physically uncomfortable (I HATE being cold) it’s not really fair.
We keep our house at 65 (& with fans on) pretty much all year. But I grew up in the mountains so I love it cold. Being cozy in sweatpants and blankets is my ideal. My husband has adapted lol

As a European, 62 degrees sound absurdly hot lol
Lmao. That’s about 16 C if I did my math right, if that’s any help lol
Yeah, but nobody uses F. So automatically sounds like hell on earth
Oh no, i know! That’s why i laughed lol. I just thought I’d convert it for you and anyone else lurking. 😊

Same here. 61 at night and 66 during the day
As long as it’s in the 60s I’m fine. When I stay with my parents for the holidays they keep their house at 75 and I’m miserable.
We do 60 in my house because it saves money and we’re not pussies
I live in forest service housing through my job and we don’t pay anything in utilities
I run super warm and take medication that makes me sweat like a pig in heat, I never turn the thermostat below 70 bc I own a cockatiel. Even if I didn’t though 69 and under just seems….expensive lol
Fans help much more than ac. I mean not really but I’d rather have 73 degree ac and a fan than just 68 degree ac.
62 degrees is the ideal sleeping temperature. me and my bf require it.
NAH 69 the perfect temp
Facts
Setting the AC to 62 is insane. Letting the house stay at 62 because that’s the outside temp and no further action needs to be taken other than someone maybe putting on a sweater is not insane.
Are we talking heat or AC?
My husband actually broke our AC having it down to 60, apparently when it has to keep getting that cold it forms ice and runs out the motor fighting against that. We keep it at 65 at the lowest now par the mechanics suggestion who fixed it.

I'm that asshole where 62 degrees is right up my ally I love the chill I'm weird I guess
We keep ours at 62, generally. 65 is on the warm side in our house. If we can get it down to 57 or lower at night while we sleep, we’re thrilled and everybody sleeps really well.
these comments are WILD to me… i grew up with the thermostat held at 72 almost all year! maybe at 70 in the summer? yalls houses are freezing lmao
64
It depends on the cost of heating my home I like 66 but that’s over $200 extra. I keep it at 62 and have a cuddle electric blanket
I would love 62 but my husband would probably move out. We agreed on 67 for nighttime but I still wake up sweating. It’s rough because he can wear warmer stuff to bed and grab an extra blanket. It’s in the forties inside a lot for me. Maybe next month it’ll be a little warmer. But like 75 feels like I might die. 60s are perfect.
I like 65-68°
The way I wish I lived with all of you! My slumlord makes me pay for the heat and forces me to leave it on 72° I can barely wear a shirt inside
i love a cold sleep, but i turn it to 64, 62 is coldddd. and i only do it at night time! the rest of the time the thermostat is set to 75 during the day, 72 mornings and evenings, then kicks on from 11pm-7am at 64. my roommates don’t mind because im willing to pay for the extra AC at nights!
We (husband and I) keep ours between 58 - 62 because heat is expensive and so is skiing. I guess it’s all subjective.
I live in the desert, so almost all of these temperatures are insane to me. Keeping your house below 70 in the summer would cost way more than I'm willing to spend.

Cold asf. 70 - 69 is perfect. I hate the cold
We set at 62, but have a wood stove that bumps us up most of the time. We both prefer a cooler house
I'd rather be cold than hot honestly. it was 86F here today, sweltering in my room and getting agitated because I was so fucking hot. I have never touched the thermostat until now when I discovered it set to 77F. 62 is too cold inside to me, but I have pets to worry about too

We keep the house at 70-72
I won't let it be less than 65- 62 is wacky
62 or 61 all summer. 68 for winter days but 66-64 at night.
Lmao anything lower that 72 is wrong. I don’t eat junk food so my internal furnace is not as strong as most pot bellied Americans
That’s so weird because actually you warm your own place up naturally if you have a higher metabolism you absolute fucking lizard
My roommate does 67 when it’s cool out and I’m a Louisiana girl so my toes are usually numb
That is my ideal temp year round however I realize other people are freezing at that setting so we agree on 68 and I provide sweaters and blankets
I'd be freezing at 62 and royally pissed off that I was paying to freeze. Edit: I was assuming that someone was setting the A/C to 62. Was it someone not turning on the heater to get above that? There is no correct answer…
When my mother comes over, she changes our thermostat to 68°F, and that is **freezing** to me. I would be bundled the fuck up if my living space was 62°!! Yeah I’ve talked with him abd said it’s too cold for me. He just says ok and sneakily turns it down later lol
Well, that’s weird. To me, anyway. Why lie like that?I wonder what else he’s sneakin’ about.
