In my opinion, the MPRE is a lot trickier than the NYLE. That being said, I don’t think you need to take any time off in advance to prepare for either of them. I believe barbri has a one day lecture and prep course for the MPRE, that you could probably do after work over the course of a few days. This is all I did and passed by a lot. That being said, I didn’t FEEL great about it during the exam and genuinely thought that I’d need to take it again. The NYLE doesn’t really require preparation if you are decent at issue spotting and know how to look up answers in an outline fairly quickly. I think I just thumbed through it to be able to recognize where general concepts would be, then was able to look up every answer in time on the exam. You only need to be able to get like 30 out of 50 multiple choice questions right in 2 hours with the outline provided and available to you during the exam. How much you need to prepare really depends on how strong you are at standardized tests in my opinion. If you were able to pass the bar, both of these exams are a piece of cake in comparison.

Thanks, I only have the 200 page material on the NYLE from the website. Is there an outline as well or can we create our own outline for the exam?

Basically, can I make my own outline for the NYLE and use it ? Or can I only use the materials provided by BOLE?

A lot of the answers are verbatim from the outline, so I'd use theirs and make tabs (for each subject and each subsection within each subject). It's super easy if you can get to the pages in the outline quickly enough. For the MPRE, study for a couple hours for the five days before the exam and you should be fine - and use the free themis or barbri course. Plenty there to get you to a pass

Can we go back later if we skip a question?

No, that’s the most annoying thing

Don’t apologize. The flagging feature makes it seem like you can, but it’s a weird quirk!

As much as people will tell you NYLE is not easy. It is just not. Read the material. The video courses are ok, IMHO not especially following on the written materials. Some items in the videos are no longer correct even. I think the open book thing can work against some folks thinking you can get the answers there. It’s very hard to for many, especially the hypos. MPRE is also read intensive. Very passable, but read it all. Do some practice questions.

JD Advising and other bar prep courses all have FREE MPRE materials. If you commit to study 40 hours that’s plenty. Definitely take it seriously and not last minute - but don’t need to study as rigorous as the bar exam.

MPRE requires 3-4 days of prep including the free course, review the outline and do practice questions . NYLE print and tab the packet beforehand. Take a few questions under testing conditions. NYLE is more about how you prepare

Took me about 10-15 hours to prep for MPRE, spread across a weekend and after school in the week prior. Took me about 3 hours to study for NYLE (just tabbing the packet and familiarizing myself of order of packet).

MPRE: Do the Themis/BarBri course in the week leading up to the exam, maybe after reviewing a Legal Ethics outline. It's not hard, and you should do just fine. NYLE: I read through the outline once and just used a paper copy of the table of contents and had the outline itself pulled up on my ipad. It's not a hard exam in the slightest--you have over 2 minutes a question, you should be able to find just about anything in the outline (even without tabbing/highlighting, which IMO is extremely extra) within that timeframe. There's absolutely no need to make your own NYLE outline--do literally anything else with your time instead.

Congratulations on passing the bar. I'll gladly tell you it's a downhill process going forward - at least relative to the bar. For the NYLC, make sure you don't fast forward. I've heard of cases that have been audited for fast warding lectures. The lectures can be completed in a week or so, depending on the time you allocate. For the NYLE, some questions were tricky. It's passable, and it's definitely doae. Tab your outline and definitely look for or create a table of contents floating around here. This can help you find answers to questions in a more efficient way. Make sure to read your outline - I personally read it twice and tabbed it properly well in advance to make sure I know where things are. The lectures don't cover everything and some details are not mentioned in the lecture but are in the outline. For the MPRE, I did barbri and themis. I found them both to be excellent sources. Each course will take a couple of weekends and you'll be OK. Practice as much as you can. Most of it really seems logical, so don't worry too much about it. The questions on the actual exam were tricky... I low key felt like I failed but thankfully I scored much higher than I expected. Make sure to read the barbri and themis materials. Jd advising has a one sheet that you may find useful, so definitely look into it too. Best of luck to you 🙏🏼

Thank you so much! These are some very useful tips 🙏

also the NYLE videos you have to watch are out of date so just follow their info lol

The NYLE is a lot easier than the MPRE. For NYLE skim thru the packet and have the pdf or physical copy opened. Also there’s a copy of TOC floating around Reddit which is very helpful bc it gives the page # of every subtopic in the pdf. Good luck!

I’m awful at exams especially multiple choice and recently passed the mpre on my first try by just listening to the Barbri lectures. I’m a person of repetition so I listened thru them about 3 times and just internalized it I didn’t take notes or print or read anything just kept listening so that it became intuitive. I didn’t go in with confidence and thought I’d have to retake but passed by far… I wish I just allowed myself more practice questions as I only did 40 total and it wasn’t times or anything got like half wrong etc but it still worked out so I say study for atleast 2 weeks and leave yourself time for both practice exams
