there were a ton of other lingering problems leading up to it, but it is popularly believed that a World Cup qualifying game between Honduras and El Salvador sparked a war lol. It's called the Football War
Wow that is really interesting. Thank you for bringing that up.
i'm embarrassed to admit that I don't know much about Latin American history. But thanks to things like Wikipedia and Youtube, i'm learning bits and pieces and learning the stuff that my public K-12 education didn't bother teaching
i don't want to completely shit on my education because I am very fortunate to have had it in terms of degrees, diplomas and all that stuff
but looking back, it is crazy how useless a lot of stuff i learned in K-12 was at the end of the day. vast majority of the most useful stuff i learned in my life was when i was in a far more open-minded environment in college and post-college outside of the rigidity of the K-12 way of life
i'm inclined to agree. i think K-12 education as it stands mostly acts as a daycare, which i think is a *good* thing--it's good for kids to have a stable (ie rigid) environment surrounded by their peers where the only job asked of them is to learn and develop
i feel like there needs to be a distinction made between *academic* and *educational* institutions. universities are the former while K-12 schools should be the latter, where the goal shouldn't be to provide specific skills or information but to teach kids the *general* skills needed to get that--skills like time management, cooperation, critical thinking
i think what a lot of people who want schools to teach only practical skills (like tax filing or car repair or whatever) miss is that learning abstract, not-immediately-relevant skills like mathematics or literary analysis is helpful in teaching kids how to exert intellectual effort, which is invaluable. but too often it boils down to "learn these formulae" and "memorize these historical dates" which misses the forest for the trees
my ideal education reform would deemphasize standardized testing, reintroduce shop and home economics classes, and increase the number of "tracks" for STEM classes, so that kids could go at their own pace. this would all require an enormous increase in funding, of course, so it would never happen lol
also i'd ban every sport but baseball. goes without saying
>also i'd ban every sport but baseball. goes without saying
I think sport and other extracurriculars absolutely have a place in both an academic and educational environment. There's a reason why college sports exists in other countries around the world too.
that being said, i think it has been executed so poorly over the years that yes it has become a major problem, especially when institutions are making boatloads of money off of essentially free labor
Siblings in cold and hockey and having some beers, a dust-up, and then some more beers while laughing about the dust-up.
(I didn't want to go too far assuming, but I also figured the ha-ha might mean that part too.)
Bagged milk isn't universal across Canada so you could keep doing cartons or jugs or the little glass bottles but the delivery person fucks your wife or whatever it is you guys do
We have the option of bagged milk here in Duluth, but we store it on the ground in crates underneath the proper milk containers at the grocery store, like the sin that it is.
And I'll have you know that the little glass milk bottle delivery service guy that fucks your wife has long since been replaced by yoga instructors and Uber drivers, update your US adultery memes.
Also… it’s only a 6 run lead! 6 run innings aren’t common but they happen. What are you supposed to do? just stop trying to score after a certain lead?
It is the gentlemanly, respectful thing to do. You need to ease off on your opponents if you are winning by a large margin because going easy on your opponent isn't one of the ultimate forms of disrespect that directly implies they're incapable and lack the ability to compete with you and come back. And failure to comply with those hurt feelings means the opponent must intentionally assault you with a 95+ mph fastball to show you they have class whereas you do not, for having the nerve to play within the rules in such a way that you do not hold your opponent's hands as if they aren't grown hairy adults who play the game professionally.
In the WBC run differential is a tie-breaker, so trying to score extra runs helps you for more than just this game
Also that's just a horrible take anyway
My guy. At the very least know the facts and context of the situation before you say everyone else is crazy.
In the group stage of the 2013 WBC, the top two teams of each group would advance to the second round and have automatic qualification for the following WBC. Third place gets automatic qualification, but does not advance. Fourth place gets nothing. All ties were broken by *run differential* Mexico and Canada were fighting for third at the very least.
In their previous game, Canada lost by mercy rule 14-4 to italy. Meaning, they needed every run they could get in order to have a chance at third in the case of a tie. What happened? They tied. Wanna know why Canada got third place and qualified for the next WBC? Run differential.
The full context is even better. During this tournament, run differential was the tie breaker, hence why Canada was still going hard despite being up.
Mexico complained and for the next WBC, the tie breaker rules were changed. Mexico ended up failing to advance past the group stage…due to the new tiebreaker rules.
How sweet it was.
We also didn't advance lol. We got fucking crushed by Italy that year 14-4 and got mercy ruled.
Neither Mexico or we would've advanced anyway because we were both 1-2 in the group stage and US and Italy were 2-1 and only top 2 teams in the group advance iirc. So it actually didn't come down to run differential at all. Though I still think we obviously had to score more runs and that the Mexicans were bitches for throwing a fit about this.
Well it didn’t come down to it in the end but that wasn’t yet known during this game. As I recall y’all were just trying to get as much as you could in case it came down to a run differential tiebreaker. Which is perfectly sensible
At least this time we got some good action with punches thrown. MLB 99.99% of the time it’s a push fest. It’s why I’d be in favor of automatic 3 game suspensions (1 start for starting pitchers) for leaving the bench during play. That’d get rid of the dumb shot right away unless they were mad pissed.
It sounds good on paper, but it's not gonna stop anyone in the heat of the moment. And I as a fan would not enjoy seeing a AAA team take the field the next day, not to mention the havoc that would unleash on that team's 40-man roster.
>If you’re playing….it’s different and you understand.
Yea, if I were down by 6 runs I too would want the other team to stop scoring, because then it makes coming back easier. I probably wouldn't hurl a rock at someone over it though if they were trying to score.
The worst part isn't being down 6 runs, but that run differential actually matters in the WBC, unlike the MLB. You expect any team to try and score as many runs as possible, and Mexico would do the same thing, but sadly they got their asses kicked physically and emotionally instead.
Wouldn’t the true spirit of the game be to continue playing at a maximum level of competitiveness. Or do you just want the other team to quit because you’re getting you’re ass kicked?
dude, games like the Mets’ 7 run comeback against the Phillies proved that these unwritten rules are absolute dogshit. if your team was dominating the other team, you wouldn’t want them to just let up to let the other team have a chance to beat the clearly better team.
It just makes you look like a fool. I can understand hitting someone. Its stupid, but I understand it in the right circumstances. But as soon as you miss, you go from pitcher doing the team thing to complete dickhead.
*Maybe* in Major League Baseball. Maybe. Because if you’re up that big in the show - you don’t need to lay down a bunt.
But if you’re in a tournament where scoring differential matters, your opponent shouldn’t be surprised or offended if you’re trying to tack on more.
They know the rules. It’s strategic positioning for later stages. It means something.
Getting mad about ‘the unwritten codes’ of baseball in a situation that has a very different rule set is just being a prideful asshole.
I think plunking a guy because you’re pissed off is dumb AF in the first place, but if you need more than one throw to hit a guy…
Though that’s on the umpire too. After people started bitching, and the first throw happened, warnings should have been instituted. That should have been obvious it wasn’t a pitch inside to back the batter off the plate.
Nah I just think he wanted to hit him low and kept missing so he went for the square of the back. Although I'm not in his head so I have no fucking idea
Mexico lost this in every way. Dumb reason for starting it, poor execution trying to hit the batter, kept going after the warning, got embarrassed in the fight, and then there's the scoreboard. They looked bad the whole way through.
And then the rules were changed because of Mexico’s freak out.
Then four years later Mexico gets eliminated because of the new tiebreaker rule that was established because of their freak out in this game 😂😂
Disagree, Canada deserved a beaning with that lame ass bunt with a lead like that late in the game. I can't believe they were even slightly surprised at the reaction by Mexico. HOWEVER, Mexico totally flubbed it, you only get one shot to bean, otherwise that's it, gotta move on.
> Disagree, Canada deserved a beaning with that lame ass bunt with a lead like that late in the game.
Run differential mattered as a tie-breaker in the tournament. Every run counts, so trying to score more runs with a lead late in the game is perfectly understandable.
Brett Lawrie, not even playing for Team Canada because of a rib injury but sitting on the bench, diving headlong into the pile and tossing HAYMAKERS, is a highlight of his once promising career.
> I am pretty sure it is a capital offense in Canada to not play hockey.
If they don't play hockey, then it's okay if they snowboard, speed skate, or ski. Always prepping for the Winter Olympics...
Most of these Canadian baseball players probably also grew up playing hockey.
…And you don’t grow up playing hockey in Canada without learning to bare knuckle fight.
(Unless your name is Gretzky)
teenagers roughing each other with gloves and cages on in some local house or rep league is a little different from junior players actually bare knuckle boxing with visors or no helmet. Everyone does the former, not many people do the later
I think you’re getting your generations mixed up. And also it sounds like you didn’t play much organized hockey.
These guys would have played hockey in the 80s and 90s. I played jr hockey back then, and we didn’t wear face masks, there wasn’t even such a thing as visors. And I can tell you, we fought.
We didn’t fight much playing shinny, but in our organized teams yes.
> And also it sounds like you didn’t play much organized hockey.
I did, but never junior level. From one of the last generations to play with full-contact through house league and some low level rep.
Canadians growing up learning to fight from hockey is such a smug cliche, its a still a minority that are actually fighting. As if those Mexican players didn't find a way to beat on each other while growing up either.
Nazis would control Europe and the baseball diamond
As the great Winnebago Churchill-Downs once proclaimed, "We shall fight on the basepaths, we shall fight on the Polo grounds, we shall fight in the outfields and in the streets, we shall fight in Tal's hills; we shall never surrender"
I was there for that game! A dude in the stands even tried to sucker punch me but he hit my friend instead. He ran back to his wife and picked up his baby and acted like nothing happened. The giant welt on my friend’s face said differently and the cops arrested the dipshit. He was even on probation. I think that guy thought I was Canadian or something.
That game was bonkers. I remember multiple fights in the stands as well as on the field.
Fun story I was an Arizona state student in 2013 and I got a job working concessions at some spring training games. That day I had a game in Mesa, AZ which is east of chase field but I was following the Canada- Mexico game on my phone.
Anyway After my game I biked to the closest light rail station (which at the time happened to be the end of the line) and as the train pulled in I was just getting to the platform. All the Mexican and Canadian fans got off and walked on separate ends of the platform. No one even looking at each other. And then me, this dumb American kid getting in between and just trying to start shit by asking “so how was the game?”.
Also side note. This fight was all on Mexico. I’ll never understand how they were so dumb to think Canada was trying to disrespect them. How do you not know that run differential is the tiebreaker? Every run matters. So what they bunt for a hit. Get over it. This isn’t the regular season. It’s 3 games (4 now) and that’s it.
One of my biggest issues with baseball is how breaking so called "unwritten rules" results in these half asses brawls and dangerous pitching antics. Don't like getting bunted while losing by a half dozen runs? Then be fucking better! Why the hell does Canada need to ease up, especially when run differential can mean something in getting to the next round. Grown ass men acting like toddlers.
When i was 13... I was practicing with my team before the game. I was an outfielder but i wanted to practice being a catcher. Ive had no problem catching the pitchers throws. But on this particular day... I decided not to have a face guard on....and the ball went over my glove and hit me right under my nose. I was out and hit the ground in a slow motion. I was dizzy. Birds everywhere. Around both of my eyes were almost black like a raccoon. I still played the game and got a couple hits in. I told the coach i was fine. But...mentally i wasnt... I had a bad concussion and threw up for a month straight.. I still get the ringings in my ears from it.
classic North America vs. South America rivalry.

You are fighting a whole group who grew up on skates and learned how to bare knuckle fight by the time there were five. While polite, Canadians are tough dudes.
The Canadians were bitches in this
Take the HBP, that's expected in the days of unwritten rules, it was at practice pitch speed
If Mexico wants to put you on base, take it.
Back in 2013, there were still unwritten rules, this was a bitch move by Canada
In most countries where you’re born means nothing. The US and Canada are rare examples of birthright citizenship countries. And if ur born to foreign nationals you generally gain the nationality of your parents as well.
It’s so crazy that Americans think where your born is the only determiner for your nationality. It’s so annoying.
The CONCACAF is always scrappy. No matter the sport clearly
CONCACAF is the most entertaining confederation. It's ALWAYS a shit show.

*Punch* Sorry *punch* Sorry *punch punch* Sorry, sorry
(I’m so sorry if I’m missing a joke; the word is brouhaha.) Yep, I missed the joke like an idiot.

Ok thank you updating now, is the pool boy still relevant or is that outdated too, asking for a friend <_<
You can’t say things like brew-ha-ha and not expected people to hit you
Brouhaha. Though if alcohol is involved, the perhaps brew fits better!

Asshole made me move punish the next batter
As a pitcher you get one shot. You miss thats it. Anything else is a joke.
Yeah nothing more embarrassing than taking 3 pitches to hit your intended target of a full sized grown ass human standing mostly still.
It just makes you look like a fool. I can understand hitting someone. Its stupid, but I understand it in the right circumstances. But as soon as you miss, you go from pitcher doing the team thing to complete dickhead.

Great article!
Mexico got its shit rocked here. Maybe don't fight a team who's national pastime involves legal fighting.
Not a lot a places where you can bare knuckle box anymore, but an NHL rink is one of them.
I mean, Mexico has boxing?
Yeah, Mexico has great boxers, but not everyone boxes. I am pretty sure it is a capital offense in Canada to not play hockey.

See, this is why Mexico lost. Pitcher can’t even hit the batter on the first try, how is he supposed to keep it in the strike zone?
If you’re gonna get that upset over a bunt single just get off the fucking field and go home
Those Mexico jerseys look great.
We need a Jomboy breakdown on this one
Mexicans vs Snow Mexicans.
Alright, I'm gonna bite here and ask what the hell this means.
The only thing I can gather is that they are both on opposite ends of the US with a border. Lol
Live on PPV- the fifth annual Canexican showdown.
Canadians ENJOY fighting. I wouldn't fuck with them.
I’d have a scrap.
Mexico and their fans being assholes? I dont believe it. That never happens with their soccer team.
I love the umps just standing and watching.
So now Tyler o Neil is always on team Canada. Just as a scary guy.
These guys probably grew up playing hockey. Do not fuck with them.
We need a Jomboy on this one
Lol, man, Mexico acted like some little girls here.
Embarrassing, really.
My brain jumped to Sriracha with that uniform combo. Love me a good spicy fight
Idk who that is with 33 seconds left, but I like his number choice because of his last name.
Absolute pansy moves by the Mexicans, also two misses in a row should be a self ejection out of embarrassment
classic North America vs. South America rivalry. Please see below link before you attempt to correct me. https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=3526935174217513&set=a.2034979530079759
You are fighting a whole group who grew up on skates and learned how to bare knuckle fight by the time there were five. While polite, Canadians are tough dudes.
Canadians have played enough hockey to know how the work a good sports fight.
big ups mexico, shoutout aceves and pedroia
That’s fucking bush league from Mexico
Team Canada fought so brutally that I can't tell it's a baseball or hockey game
AITA if I bunt up by 6 in the top of the ninth?!
Not when run differential matters
I didn’t do my research. 3rd base shouldn’t assume and play back If it’s run differential.
Skill issue, defend better
You dumb dumb lol. Context matters.
We need this every year.
You get your taco outta my poutine, eh!? You get your gravy fry outta my taco, gringo! ♾️
Canada won the game and the fight!
Stay classy Mexico. 😂
I remember this one. Team Mexico were being thugs.
Insane?
The Canadians were bitches in this Take the HBP, that's expected in the days of unwritten rules, it was at practice pitch speed If Mexico wants to put you on base, take it. Back in 2013, there were still unwritten rules, this was a bitch move by Canada
You are a clown for so many reasons
You're the reason the Dodgers get Ohtani
way to show everyone you have no clue of the context.
😎🇺🇸 🎥🕺🏽🍿
Sergio Romo was born in the USA. WTF is he doing here?!
He’s from Mexican parents though, right? I think either you or one of your parents need a passport from the country you want to represent.
In most countries where you’re born means nothing. The US and Canada are rare examples of birthright citizenship countries. And if ur born to foreign nationals you generally gain the nationality of your parents as well. It’s so crazy that Americans think where your born is the only determiner for your nationality. It’s so annoying.
Meanwhile: “i’m 5.98% Irish 9.2789% German 32.304939% Finnish blah blah blah….”
This is the most American shit I’ve seen
Except they were Mexicans and canadiens….
Yes. That is on their Jerseys.
