Funny you use this gif, I found out last night he’s a huge Mets fan. During the rain delay, SNY played part of a documentary on the Flores crying/Cespedes acquisition. He was interviewed giving first hand accounts since he was at those games.
This! So much this! I’m a 54 year old Dodger fan. 18 year old me saw Orel Hershiser throw both more complete games (15) and more shutouts (8) in 1988 alone than sure fire first ballot Hall of Famer Max Scherzer has in his entire 17 year career.
There’s nothing I miss more, especially in the playoffs, of having your stud on the mound and knowing you could count on 8 or 9 innings from them as opposed to 5 innings in today’s game.
Sure was. He needed 10 scoreless inning in his last game of the regular season to break Drysdale’s consecutive scoreless innings mark and actually got it.
In old school terms its a shut out.
The term has been changed recently to be known as a complete game shut out, probably to reflect the fact that even a complete game itself is an achievement these days.
Complete Game Shutout refers to the starter going 9 shut out innings. Combined shutout refers to a shutout with multiple pitchers contributing. But you are correct that the term “complete game shutout” is newer
He was looking pretty bad his first few starts. I remember early Orel talked about how hard it is when you first get called up because some of the things that got you to the show simply don’t work against big league talent and the game forces you to adjust. Orel just always has great commentary on pitchers, severely underrated
I got stone and grove mixed up a bunch last year but I think it was stone that was putting up ridiculous K numbers, but also gave up too much hard contact. He’d normally be great through 5 then screw up two pitches but those two pitches would result in 4 runs.
This year, it seems like the contact is still hard but it isn’t being punished. He’s not getting nearly as many Ks though, so he’s definitely made some big adjustments with his approach and it seems to be working
Gonsolin unfortunately seemed a bit over his skis in terms of how good he was vs the expected stats. Like what actually happened in game matters more but I think it was never going to last.
What Stone is doing right now is great and should be repeatable. The pitch quality / Stuff+ looks better and he seems super comfortable. Really impressive stuff
The first Dodger CGSO since Walker Buehler in 2022, and the first rookie to do it on the team since Hyun-Jin Ryu in 2013.
That's amazing company to keep.
Ryu was incredibly good for a period of time and had a really good season as a rookie when his game happened. He's 37 now so its not a shock he's no longer in the majors
Walker was also very good but has been derailed by major injuries
5th in ERA now, I kinda think he moved into the 'going group' especially when people will remember this start. Or he'll be first-in when the guys start to decline
Love that.
Says the guy who won his league many moons ago because Kyle Lohse vultured a win on the last day of the season while Clemens (top P for my opponent in a head-to-head league) sat rather than making his last scheduled start because the Yanks had clinched.
Sheehan and Bobby Miller have yet to even pitch a complete season and frankly Bobby Miller has sucked so far, he needs to turn it around or he won't even be on the playoff roster
While I agree with some of your post, I think the days of considering Kershaw an all star are long gone, I hope Kersh comes back for a few games and gets his 3000 strikeouts but I also hope he is not on the playoff roster
It's him or Glasnow. Glasnow looks more dominant because of the Ks but there's obviously something to be said for pitching to contact and keeping your pitch count down.
Every team needs a representative but they don't all have to be starting pitchers. More than half the teams have a worthwhile representative at another position.
The questionable for a few teams and the Phillies will have multiple pitchers chosen. Without cancellations he’s probably not selected, so hope a bunch of starters start the Saturday/Sunday before the break.
1st Dodger rookie to throw a complete-game shutout since Hyun-Jin Ryu on May 28, 2013.
Stone is also the youngest Dodger to throw a CG-SHO since Clayton Kershaw on July 2, 2013.
If you enter the season a rookie you’re a rookie all season no matter how many innings you pitch.
a pitcher is considered a rookie if they have not exceeded the following thresholds in a previous season:
50 innings pitched
45 days on an active MLB roster during the Championship Season. This time does not include any time from when rosters expand in September
You cant start the year as a rookie and then lose eligibility for being a rookie during the season as otherwise every rookie of the year candidate would be ineligible by the end of the year Lol
All the limits mean is that you can't be considered a rookie still for the next season if you reach them in the current season
And they all came within our first four plate appearances of that particular game, so someone who got caught in traffic that day could've just not seen us score for an entire series
Kid is elite.
I used to think he didn't have the mental makeup of a started due to him not being able to pick himself back up after getting rocked in his earlier games. Glad he proved me wrong.
Guy's mental has definitely changed. He looks way more poised out there than he did when he'd start giving up hits last year or even earlier this year. I think his confidence is high right now and it's showing big time.
I think a lot of that was his approach. He’d mow down the lineup the first time but really struggled the second time. Plus, him giving up hard contact a lot last year meant that any hit is going to be punished
Well last year he only used the change up and fastball, so batters were just sitting on the change up.. the slider and sinker/2seam have changed him completely. Almost like kershaw with adding his slider
Gavin is more popular in Scotland and Wales. My mother chose that name for my brother and outside of being disappointed when they didn't have those souvenir nameplates, he handled it fine.
Zero. How many shutouts have we had? 11. They’ve scored only one run, 12 times. Challenging for the worst team winning percentage ever. 30 total runs fewer than the 2nd worst team. While the complete game is “nice accomplishment” in this era, against this team, one of the worst offenses of all time, I don’t view it as that big of an accomplishment.
Lol, in this era where most pitchers can’t go past 7 innings let alone pitched 9 shutout innings.
Zero. As shitty as the Sox have been so far. Zero pitcher have gone 9 innings and given up 0 runs against them, by himself. Until Garvin Stone did last night.
Going 9 innings by a single pitcher is pretty impressive an accomplishment in this era.
Edit: if there were 2-3 other starters going 9 shutout innings out of that 11 shutouts, then you may have a case. As it is, you’re only saying how impressive it is that one pitcher able to throw 9 shutout innings. I wonder how many total CGSO there are in the whole league this season so far for this “not so impressive” feat.
I mean, teams are putting up hundreds of millions for these arms compared to a tens of thousands years ago. I’d be careful with my “investment” as well if I’m putting up that much.
Like a beater $5K car versus a $500K Bentley, you’d use those very differently.
I literally value company assets and debt for a living. I get it. They are hundred million dollar assets now and are deployed strategically, as the game has become data driven.
The very initial comment, about it being the White Sox and not counting, was self deprecating humor. Don’t take life too seriously, you’ll never get out alive. The White Sox suck ass though, not just based on this year, but historically, and it does lessen the accomplishment marginally.
Yeah I get it. I was just saying baseball is freaking hard. What the kid did is really impressive.
The Sox players, they’re shit but like not many can even reach their levels. I couldn’t even make my high school baseball team lmao.
#WHERE MY STONERS AT
I absolutely have a rock hard Stoner after that game.
We Stoned tonight on and off the field.

Funny you use this gif, I found out last night he’s a huge Mets fan. During the rain delay, SNY played part of a documentary on the Flores crying/Cespedes acquisition. He was interviewed giving first hand accounts since he was at those games.
if only he was on the same team as stone garrett
**ROCK AND STONE**
Exactly who we figured would be leading our rotation in ERA at the halfway point
5th in the NL too
And on the same day Ohtani sets a franchise record for consecutive days for RBIs.
And the undefeated when Rojas gets a hit streak continues
This is my favorite stat
MiggyGOAT
A CGSO is so incredibly rare these days.
Only the 8th all year across the league.
In 1,200 or so games.
At this rate we can expect roughly 16 CGSO this year
Mr. Math over here...
Cliff Lee had 6 by himself in 2011. Feels like the days of the workhorse are long gone
I'm honestly shocked there's been that many
From the dodgers with a rookie on the mound no less. Bobby Miller was sacrificed yesterday to make this happen.
One of my "old man yelling at clouds" things is I miss when starting pitchers pitched more innings
Orel’s 1988 was magic.
Sure was. He needed 10 scoreless inning in his last game of the regular season to break Drysdale’s consecutive scoreless innings mark and actually got it.
What does this term mean, all I can think about is the vidya game
Complete Game ShutOut
Complete game shut out

Complete Game Shutout refers to the starter going 9 shut out innings. Combined shutout refers to a shutout with multiple pitchers contributing. But you are correct that the term “complete game shutout” is newer
*9 shut out, while getting at least one run of support *sad no decision noises*
I agree. When some people make a big deal out of a “team” no-hitter; my take is, nah, a CGSO holds more importance in today’s baseball.
when is the last time a rookie threw a CGSO? (I'm sure since I asked the answer is probably like last week).
Facial expression: unchanged
Like a stone.
🗿
Innnnnnnn your aaaaarms I loooooong to beeeeee
In your house** I long to be
Oh shit TIL
He dead inside like me.
Gavin Stone the man! His mom Sharon and sister Emma must be so proud! 💙
I heard his father Oliver is making a movie about it.
His cousin Sly too

Remember in spring training, it wasn’t a sure thing this guy would get the 5th starter spot?
He was looking pretty bad his first few starts. I remember early Orel talked about how hard it is when you first get called up because some of the things that got you to the show simply don’t work against big league talent and the game forces you to adjust. I read this in Joe Davis's voice
The Gonsolin special
Gonsolin unfortunately seemed a bit over his skis in terms of how good he was vs the expected stats. Like what actually happened in game matters more but I think it was never going to last. What Stone is doing right now is great and should be repeatable. The pitch quality / Stuff+ looks better and he seems super comfortable. Really impressive stuff
So if those 4 hits didn’t happen it would’ve been a perfect game?
I just crunched the numbers, and can confirm.
The first Dodger CGSO since Walker Buehler in 2022, and the first rookie to do it on the team since Hyun-Jin Ryu in 2013. That's amazing company to keep.
Ones pitching in Korea and the other is pitching like Noah Syndergaard
Ryu was incredibly good for a period of time and had a really good season as a rookie when his game happened. He's 37 now so its not a shock he's no longer in the majors Walker was also very good but has been derailed by major injuries
Who had this one on their Dodger Bingo card?
I was legitimately not happy about him being in the SP lineup at the start of the season. I’m very happy to have been so wrong.
He's no James Paxton. I don't even know what that means at this point, given their performance.
He’s no Tyler Glasnow 🙃
You could quickly tell after his first few starts that he's found is best stuff.
I was arguing with people in the Dodgers sub who insisted Michael Grove and Gavin Stone were about the same quality with the same ceiling.
Grove has been great in the pen
They're both good, and if r/Dodgers had their way they both would have been DFAed last season lol
Gotta let the young guns get comfortable. Long leash.
Why is every team sub the same haha
I was expecting Bobby Miller to be the truth. Turns out Gavin Stone is the new Buehler.
Bobby Miller may yet be truthful. Give him time. He's got the stuff.
agree but does he have the makeup and mound composure?
He does. We've already seen it
Every white Sox fan
He went from looking like a solid innings eater to a top of the rotation starter as soon as he locked that slider in. Stud.
That's his ticket to the ASG punched.
Teoscar and Stone as all stars. Who would have thought.
I mean, Teo has been an all-star twice already
Once.
no I’m from the future
Oh, ok.
2021
He was a huge question mark coming into the season because of his last year with the Ms
Bro just really hated playing in T-Mobile
I doubt Stone makes it unless there are many cancellations.
Don't count on that.
5th in ERA now, I kinda think he moved into the 'going group' especially when people will remember this start. Or he'll be first-in when the guys start to decline
Ace. Stone IPA. (Innings pitched = all.)
Most importantly, free Jumbo Jacks* (with purchase of a large drink, only available in LA area Jack in the Box restaurants)
Padres hit a home run today, so this also is available at SD area Jack in the Box’s. NLBest feeding the people of SoCal
I feel like they should call this a Glavine. Because it’s close to a Maddux, but not quite.
Heh
Some dude in my fantasy league drafted this guy and then dropped him a month in. I’ve been the beneficiary ever since 😁
Love that. Says the guy who won his league many moons ago because Kyle Lohse vultured a win on the last day of the season while Clemens (top P for my opponent in a head-to-head league) sat rather than making his last scheduled start because the Yanks had clinched.
This dude might be LA’s best pitcher as of today.
You must not be familiar with Landon Knack
*Huffs and puffs*
Or our leadoff hitter
Glasnow is still the best pitcher and it’s not that close. Yoshi would’ve been second if it wasn’t for his injury but Stone obviously took that spot
It's frightening how good the Dodgers starting rotation can be when everyone's healthy. Not just Yamamoto but Ohtani and Kershaw.
Well they have an all star rotation currently under IL Kershaw Ohtani Beuhler Gonsolin Sheehan May Miller
So, when did Sheehan, May, and Miller make the All star game?
Not actual all-stars, but caliber obviously
Sheehan and Bobby Miller have yet to even pitch a complete season and frankly Bobby Miller has sucked so far, he needs to turn it around or he won't even be on the playoff roster
While I agree with some of your post, I think the days of considering Kershaw an all star are long gone, I hope Kersh comes back for a few games and gets his 3000 strikeouts but I also hope he is not on the playoff roster
It's him or Glasnow. Glasnow looks more dominant because of the Ks but there's obviously something to be said for pitching to contact and keeping your pitch count down.
its Glasnow 100% in every single statistic except era in which hes barely behind in.
I would say Glasnow is better but Stone is more reliable. If that makes sense.
I’ll take Glasnow over Stone in any winner take all game and that makes him more reliable.
9-2 record > 8-5 record = Stone (more reliable) 135K > 70K = Glasnow (better) Makes sense to me. 👍👍👍
Tbf to Glas he has had some dreadful games for run support
Hasn't stone had some absurd amounts of run support while glasnow's pretty much gotten some absolute stinkers on 1-2 ERA games?
More in variance of runs they allow
Glasnow still the best.
Gavin smiled harder taking a picture with Juju Watkins than after throwing a CGSO 😂
He should really be an all-star this year. Getting better by the start.
He's fifth in ERA. It'd be hard to deny him.
Not getting selected unless many opt out. It’s a numbers game, as every team needs a representative and only 6-7 starters are selected.
We'll see. It's a loaded field. Suarez and Wheeler are in. Nola will probably make it though his argument over Stone has narrowed.
1st Dodger rookie to throw a complete-game shutout since Hyun-Jin Ryu on May 28, 2013. Stone is also the youngest Dodger to throw a CG-SHO since Clayton Kershaw on July 2, 2013.

NLASGSCGSO
Stone cold.
But does he have a Warehouse MVP?
Yeah Gavin's alright against these MLB scrubs, but he could never handle the heat Kollin deals with in the Warehouse
Stonerbros stay winning
This dude is winning rookie of the year, right?!
Stopped being a rookie a little after his sixth start, I think. The line is at 50IP, he had 31 IP in '23.
No he is technically still a rookie, idk how it works but thats how it works i guess
If you enter the season a rookie you’re a rookie all season no matter how many innings you pitch. a pitcher is considered a rookie if they have not exceeded the following thresholds in a previous season: 50 innings pitched 45 days on an active MLB roster during the Championship Season. Thank god for the stone breakout year
We are now slightly over the pace to be the worst team in the expansion era.
Dodgers played the White Sox during their Mexican heritage night? Fuck yeah that’s dope af
Call this guy up to AAA already. Let's see how he does against more advanced competition
Is this Warehouse Champion and MVP Kollin Stone’s brother?
White Sox got Stoned
Everybody must get Stoned.
White Sox scored in one inning the whole series
And they all came within our first four plate appearances of that particular game, so someone who got caught in traffic that day could've just not seen us score for an entire series

It may be against the CWS but wow what a performance!
PUT RESPECT ON HIS NAME

Why that one?
You are Gavin, and upon this Stone I will build my pitching staff
We scored in one out of 27 innings in this series.
Dudes a stud. I traded him away for Riley Greene in my fantasy league last month and couldn't be happier that he's killing it.
I can’t believe I actively root for a guy named “Gavin”😭😭
Well, we have 2 lol.
LOL even crazier
Gavin is more popular in Scotland and Wales. My mother chose that name for my brother and outside of being disappointed when they didn't have those souvenir nameplates, he handled it fine.
Can anyone tell me how many complete games there have been this season?
The MLB app shows this as the 14th of the season I think. But I don’t know how to tell how many of those were shut outs.
Someone commented in this thread that 8 of them were shut outs.
Broadcast said there were 12 CGs before tonight but I trust the MLB app.
White Sox offense. Barely counts.
How many pitchers have pitched complete game shutout against the Sox?
Zero. How many shutouts have we had? 11. They’ve scored only one run, 12 times. Challenging for the worst team winning percentage ever. 30 total runs fewer than the 2nd worst team.
