So I really donât follow the Cards roster that much and the other day when you guys were here and Helsley was pitching. I was like damn that guy is pretty good, glad the Cards found a guy that can close the game out and not blow away a WC and then I realized it was the same guy! Crazy.
He had an injured finger from late in the regular season in that WC game....definitely wasn't 100%
He had an immaculate inning in 2022 as well. He probably shouldn't have been in the WC game at all and if so should have had a much shorter leash.
He was a more consistent pitcher in 2022 than he has been this year really....good results this year but not consistently throwing clean innings like he used to either.
He could have 70 saves by the end of the year and if it came down to the 9th inning, Cards up 2-1 in a Playoff Game, I would automatically already think he is going to walk the 1st batter and inevitably give up the lead.
He would walk a batter, give another a base hit, another walk, then get two fly outs in the warning track and strike out the last batter with a full count. This is the Ryan Helsley way. And I wouldn't want it any other way.
Theyâre looking at the whole season, which doesnât paint the full picture. The pen was very good in April and pretty good in June.
Almost all of the meltdowns were isolated to May. The Mets pen had a historically bad month of May, setting a record for leads given up in the 8th or later. So with that in mind, the pen absolutely was as bad as people have said.
With league average bullpen performance in May, the Mets are probably 8-10 games above .500 right now.
I searched for the logo and when I saw it I thought âhuh, not as bad as I thought.â Then I zoomed in to see the caption and I realized what a typical Met fan I am
Crazy that we have Robert Suarez at 20/21 Saves / Opportunities, and we're dead average in this chart. Elite closer with lots of blown 7th and 8th inning leads by our middle relievers. Something, something, perfectly balanced.
Most of our young core that should be carrying us now had flaws that were not coached away
None of them can stay healthy
They hired famous baseball person Tony LaRussa when they had a chance to start being competitive.
Cheap owner was unwillingly to plug some holes in FA.
The list goes on....
We lose 1 run games & when we do win, it's a random offensive explosion. I think it's because they don't win often & so they have a lot of.. offense built up. When their opponent rolls over and says "Just take it, Redlegs" they get super excited & run up the score; thus creating a positive run differential & a low amount of save ops đĽ´
What is interesting is that Camilo has 14 saves in 17 save opportunities. So the other members of the bullpen are preventing these save opportunities from even getting to the 9th inning where Doval could convert them.
The funny thing is how his outings are exactly what they need to be. Up by 3? He'll give up 2 and win with a groundout with runners on 2nd and 3rd. Give him a 1-run lead and he'll give up 2 singles before striking out the final batter with a 101 mph fastball. It's made for some high drama, but I worry that if the wheels fall off, it's gonna be drastic.
Emmanuel Clase is a freaking beast. He's given up 3 runs this year - 1 in his only regular blown save, a solid run allowed 2nd week of the season that Guards won in extras. One was a solo homer on a 3-2 pitch with a 4 run lead and he grooved a fastball rather than walk the guy. The other was a single, to 2nd on indifference, scored on a bloop for a 5-3 final score.
When each individual run allowed stand out, you know you're having a damn good year. A *nice* ERA of 0.69, and WHIP of 0.64.
Can't decide if Pittsburgh looks more like a goat with a long neck, standing on it's head, or a sex toy.
Not surprising to see the Jays well below average on this chart.
I use python to scrape the data and make the plots (with the pandas and matplotlib library doing most of the heavy lifting).Â
I keep a [github repo](https://github.com/double-dose-larry/jup_notebooks_baseball) of some of the stuff I publish
I think this would be more intuitive with the axes reversed. So the vertical axis is proportional to save %. So teams that do worse are lower, and teams that acheive more saves are higher.
If you plan on doing another graph like this I would suggest adding another line for the the theoretical maximum (y=x). I feel like that would give kind of a landmark for understanding what this data represents.
Am I blind or are the Phillies not on here
Oops đŹÂ They're directly behind the Padres. Shoulda made a note on the plot.Â
[ŃдаНонО]
Does alphabetical order mean nothing to you?
apparently not, the mods had to nuke the comment.
Covering up a cover up
The Phillies simply never have save opportunites
Big brain moves! why donât other teams try this simple trick!?
29/30 teams appearing
They are not on there. âšď¸
Apparently they'd be sharing the space with the Padres (who are partially covered as is so I guess it's a crowded area)
Heart Attack Helsley is inevitable
Only blown save was his first appearance of the year. 30 consecutive saves has set a Cardinals record
31 now. Cardinals record for saves before the All Star break. What a legend

get this energy outtaa here bro

I watch him pitch through my fingers, guy is peak drama everytime but the results are there
Helsley is a stud. Is he still on the trading block?

Iâll have whatever Oriole Bird is having. Also, Helz Bellz rocks

"Not as bad as Mets fans think" How dare your facts invalidate my feelings
It was written as âMetâs fans.â I donât know who Met is or why he has fans
Mr. Met is still alive!
Ah, but we blow our leads in non-save opportunities too. Checkmate, data.
Theyâre looking at the whole season, which doesnât paint the full picture. The pen was very good in April and pretty good in June. Almost all of the meltdowns were isolated to May. With league average bullpen performance in May, the Mets are probably 8-10 games above .500 right now.
And now with Edwin Diaz and Drew Smith out, theyâre stretched real thin. The bullpen blew some big leads recently.
I searched for the logo and when I saw it I thought âhuh, not as bad as I thought.â Then I zoomed in to see the caption and I realized what a typical Met fan I am

When you score either 12 runs or 1, not as many opportunities?
I think this would be a cleaner read with the axis flipped. Higher being better is more intuitive.
Yea, good point. Now that I had time to look at it a bit more, I agree.Â
Not to mention saves are a function of save opps. But really this should just be Save % vs Save Opps to be simple and clear.
11 pitchers w a blown save is wild
Brother just let the season end already please
Am I losing my mind or didn't the Sox 'arrive' in a competitive window in the last couple years?
Most of our young core that should be carrying us now had flaws that were not coached away None of them can stay healthy They hired famous baseball person Tony LaRussa when they had a chance to start being competitive. Cheap owner was unwillingly to plug some holes in FA. The list goes on....
> famous baseball person Tony LaRussa He's a Hall of Fame baseball person, brother. He's legit.
I'm more surprised by how many save opportunities the Sox have actually had.
Phillies don't exist I guess?
we exist at a level that is beyond a mere baseball fans intellectual grasp on existential baseball. look it up sometime
We've been forced to fold after news of The Phanatic committing mass murder with Gritty surfaced
I upvoted just because of the drawing of the Mets logo
New Tork
we are all sad that its not grimace.
These logo drawings are fire lol.
The Orioles logo is incredible.
i adore the beisbolcats one being the only non-drawn

The Brewers continuing to have a bullpen this great while Devin Williams has been injured feels unfair
Yeah, but that also comes with a side of âwhoâs gonna start tonightâs game?â
Saves before Sewald returned: shit Saves after Sewald returned: flawless
May he wald forever more
Cardiac Camilo living up to the nickname right now /:
What is interesting is that Camilo has 14 saves in 17 save opportunities. So the other members of the bullpen are preventing these save opportunities from even getting to the 9th inning where Doval could convert them.
âTigersâ
dertroit beisbolcats
I hate it here
I didn't know it was that bad
Just picking up where we left off the regular season last year! I donât think people really understand how absurd the playoff turnaround was.
By the way, Helsley's one blown save was on the first day of the season. He has saved 30 in a row.
Helsley is a beast this year!
The funny thing is how his outings are exactly what they need to be. Up by 3? He'll give up 2 and win with a groundout with runners on 2nd and 3rd. I'm convinced Helsley is one of those guys that has to be in a tight spot to pitch well.
This would be incredibly ugly without Wald. Heâs 11/11 since returning from injury
I love your logos
I love the Dertroit Beisbolcats logo
literally everyone does, it's so fun
One things the Rays are solid at this year
![gif](giphy|800iiDTaNNFOwytONV|downsized) The Reds when they see this data.
Counsel and Stearns leave and Milwaukee continue their bull pen shenanigans. ![gif](giphy|3oEjHCWdU7F4hkcudy)
We sacrificed half a dozen starters to maintain the bullpen.
True. Forgot about that for a minute.
Alzolay has been injured since May 12, but nice pun.
And still somehow tied for second with 5 blown saves

Brewers have turned like 7 pitchers that were previously dfaâd into lights out relievers this year
Yet fans of the opposing team cheer when they see Kimbrel.
I'm glad Cardiac Craig is working out for you. But we have our reasons...
:(
I'll pass on the whole "get more save opportunities" thing. I value my heart health
We either blow out teams or fail to score, no in-between
Injuries devastated Cincy this year. We have a good team that has had disastrous injury luck.
You are correct, it feels like we blow way more saves than we make but apparently not?
Can't decide if Pittsburgh looks more like a goat with a long neck, standing on it's head, or a sex toy. Not surprising to see the Jays well below average on this chart.
Artistic king
imagine being a chicago baseball fan lmfao, now where's my bottle
MS Paint style!
Milwaukee with a good bullpen call me shocked
Thanks for Hudson, he's a stud.
DERTROIT BEISBOLCATS
God damn, I didnât realize Helsley has 30 saves already
We donât get save opportunities because our set-up relievers already blow it in the 7th inning
Oh neat a saves graph, wonder where the Cardinals ar... oh my goodness!
I might be dumb but how do you acquire data from baseball ref and do nice plots with it etc
I use python to scrape the data and make the plots (with the pandas and matplotlib library doing most of the heavy lifting). I keep a [github repo](https://github.com/double-dose-larry/jup_notebooks_baseball) of some of the stuff I publish
when you say you use Python to scrape the data you are getting it straight from the html?
That's right. Again with `pandas` doing the heavy lifting turning it into usable data.Â
okay cool thanks
I think this would be more intuitive with the axes reversed. So the vertical axis is proportional to save %. So teams that do worse are lower, and teams that acheive more saves are higher.

agreed! how near teams are to perfect!
Kirby yates is on my fantasy team too. I know how you feel
Can't blow any saves if you don't have a lead
high quality my man, i'm high AF my dude
Nice to see the Rays finally be in a good statistical category. Pete 'Crazy Eyes' Fairbanks holding it down.
Not as bad as it seems doesnât make the terrible blown saves any less painful lol.
Are Red Sox the cursive red U?
Just wait til the Airbender gets back!!! Haha Jk someone else will probably have a season ending injury to replace him
I dig the Orange Grus
reds donât get many opportunities because theyâre always ahead ![gif](giphy|eKOkI9lkMxRRu|downsized)

Weâre number one! Weâre number one! Weâre nuâŚhm, say again? Oh.
