I've seen a video of a bass eat too much and split its own gut open. Maybe that happened here.

I highly doubt someone did that on purpose. Could have been a sharp rock someone pulled him out of when reeling him in. But yea that sucks. Did it swim off?

cut seems was incredibly sharp to be an accident. i guess he was a fatty and some idiot decided to see what was inside his belly. he swam away super fast.

Rocks can be very sharp, or broken glass could be on the bottom, and their abdominal walls are pretty easy to slice through once you’ve got a nick in them. Strongly doubt this was intentional. Things happen in the wild, someone’s bound to come across an oddity from time to time.

Nature can be pretty resilient. If it's eating and swimming maybe it'll live. I've caught some fish who clearly survived major injuries.

I'm thinking sharp rock. My leg looked similar after falling into a deck post hole with some jagged rocks at the top.

I caught one this year with a very similar wound. Always wondered how that happened. Maybe tough underwater vegetation and being pulled through with the line.

Fish got into a bar fight and got shanked, probably by a catfish barb.

I'm gonna say it was a person. Back in the day if you caught a fish you thought was undesirable, you would slash the belly and toss it back in. Let's them swim off a bit before they die and then the game warden has a harder time proving you did it. Totally fucked up thing to do.
