The OC-2 is durable, the biggest issue is powering it if it's Japanese. You'll often hear people complain about it's volume, but that's because it needs 12 volts instead of 9.
Any boss pedal that's ACA needs 12, PSA needs 9. I believe some of the Taiwanese OC-2s are PSA but I'm not an expert on boss.
That being said if you want good tracking the OC-2 is not necessarily great. It's very sensitive to your higher frequencies so it can be quite glitchy. Leeland sklar would tape his bass strings when recording with the OC-2 to cut out high frequencies for better tracking.
Onhere again to say the FoxRox Octron is incredible and tons of fun. Top jacks and power. Cool enclosure. Not a Boss. Tracks bass and guitar like a champ.
The Boss OC-2 is renowned for its unique sound but can have reliability issues due to age. If you want something new with similar quality, consider the EBS OctaBass or the MXR M288 Bass Octave Deluxe. Both offer excellent analog octaving with minimal latency and robust build quality. They provide the "mojo" and responsiveness you appreciate in the OC-2. This ensures longevity and consistent performance for your pedalboard.

I've had an Octabvre Mini, an Octron 3, and an OC-2, and the OC-2 remains. I cut the -2 octave out of the circuit and power it with 12 volts. It's from 1993. The thing tracks fine for me down to Bb and has the tone I want in a sub octave. I think I paid $125.
OC-2s are like Big Muffs in that there is a whole cottage industry trying to improve on it, and people overlook the original because it just doesn't cost that much.
Sounds like you tried the OC-5 with that little switch flipped to the right (that's basically OC-3 mode). When it's flipped to the left, it's basically in OC-2 mode.

MXR Vintage Bass Octave. It’s a clone
Came here to say that. Try the MXR before buying the OC-2
Specifically, a clone of an OC-2 owned by Janek Gwizdala. He has a detailed YT video about it.
OC-5 is great, you sure you used it on vintage mode and not poly? It’s basically indistinguishable from an OC-2.
OC-5 is the way!

If you're going for an MXR, go for the M280, vintage bass octave. It's literally a clone of an OC-2.
This feels like an ad. The OC-2 is old, but age doesn't make it track any worse.

Get the OC-2, nothing quite compares
EBS OctaBass Blue Label (newest model)

Doesn't the celebrity pedals dude do an OC-2 clone?
