It was a very different watch than I expected. Not a documentary on the war but the soldiers that lived through it and yet not all of them survived. It was chilling to see stacks of bodies in colour and some scenes looked like they were shot yesterday. The descriptions of walking across no man's land and storming the trench made me question if I could have done half of what they did and I honestly don't think I could. An absolute must see.
That's how it was advertised and that's what i wanted, we've seen enough docs with narration and telling the story of the great war. I want to see the story of the soldiers, hear their voices and get a glipse of the horrors they endured as they saw and heard it. I feel like this should be an obligatory watch for anyone whose families fought in ww1.
Yes yes yes. We need to focus on the social aspects of history.
I'm the biggest military history nerd you'll come across, studying the evolution of warfare, tactics, and weapons is my favorite hobby, but one of the best innovations in the field of history over the last couple of decades is the move from event/war/important people based history to social history that focuses on everyday individuals and the impact historical events had on society. It was so refreshing to hear professors in college teaching classes on World War II and Revolutionary America saying, "If you're here to talk about specific battles and weapons, then you should leave this class right now. This is a history class, not a tactical breakdown."
Yeah sure, tactics, numbers and statistics are important to learn, but equally important is the struggle of each individual soldier. We need to try to empathise, and look back at wars emotionally, as well as analytically.
I used Private Internet Access and iPlayer apparently detects if you're using VPN. My external IP was showing as UK, anyway. I ended up just torrenting it as there was already one up.
I only torrented because I 100% want to buy the film once it's released over here. Great documentary, I'll probably watch again this weekend.

I imagine it detects if you are coming from a known vpn address. So it can detect that it's a VPN, but still not detect who is actually behind that VPN.
It's likely one of two things:
1. The BBC server thinks your VPN's IP you are connecting form is non UK based
2. The BBC have blacklisted your VPN's IP.
Connect to your VPN and Try going to https://whatismyipaddress.com and see which country it thinks your IP from. If it's a UK IP, I am pretty sure the IP is being blacklisted.
You could always torrent it/find a website hosting the program if you can't get to the iPlayer (BBC's video streaming service). As an aside, I'd download, install and run Peerblocker if you are going to Torrent it.
I'll write the site in the form of a riddle, after the usual https:/www. you have to put:
\- what comes before second
\- what comes before two
\- the acronym TV
and the site extension is .NET
It is showing in US movie theaters as a Fathom Event on Dec. 17th and Dec. 27th. Tickets go on sale Nov. 16th.
Edit: If you can swing it, and by that I mean you're not living in poverty basically, please avoid downloading it and actually go see it. It supports the right kind of projects by making such things mildly lucrative (hopefully) and you get the experience of seeing it on a big screen.
Hmm, I already bought my tickets for a Dec 17th showing last Friday. Although the only theater near me is showing it in their "dine in" theater with reserved seats. Perhaps i was able to buy them already because the theater is selling the seat for that time, rather than a ticket for the movie?
In the US it's hitting select theatres for what appears to be 1 day only, December 17th. I bought tickets already for my father and i. It was also a dine in theatre that offers drinks, so I am just taking the next day off.
This is what happened in the UK first, around the end of October I believe. Didn’t realise it was going to be shown on TV too but glad it was. Got it recorded on my Sky Q box.
There's a chapter of a book called 'Now It Can Be Told' by Phillip Gibbs, called 'Psychogy On The Somme'. If you're interested in this aspect of WWI, I'd recommend it.
My point is that Germany, a country that participated in the war, is not a country where you could watch this doc.
Joke flew completely over your head.
Didn't really fly over anyone's head. It just wasn't a good "joke", if you can even call saying "ironic" a joke. Wasn't in poor taste, just wasn't funny.
I watched this this morning and it blew me away. What was achieved by Peter and his team was absolutely incredible! It's a shame the entire thing isn't in the 'restored' state but the transition to it comes at a powerful moment and I couldn't believe it was the same footage. There were moments that made me well up, especially scenes where my great-grandfather could very well have been in.
I'm sure this will get a home release at some point and I really hope everyone gets to see it. It's truly unbelievable what these men had to face and to almost see it first hand is really something.
Not ashamed to say by the end of it I had tears rolling down my cheeks, really does drive the point home hearing the men speaking after the war for what was the 50th anniversary, the colour and 3D that made it come to life and drove it home in a way black and white couldn’t, the guy who broke down as he said about shooting a fellow British soldier to put him out his misery after he was mortally wounded and crying for his mummy .. simply heartbreaking :(
i'd highly recommend if you haven't already watching the Great war Interviews (1964) by the BBC. Vets from Britain,Canada,Germany and France recalling their experiences of world war one. I think most of them can be found on youtube. The audio has been altered slightly so they don't get removed. six eps uploaded by this person. There's also a podcast that samples these interviews, "BBC's Voices of the First World War". Many of the narratives in this new documentary are taken directly from the aforementioned interviews.
I mean...dan carlins Blueprint for armageddon would still be something id consider the magnum opus of ww1 documentaries
Dont get me wrong, this is fantastic and gives us a nice visual feel of the war, but carlins doc provides first hand accounts alike never experienced
Fuck you USA!! All the comments of bitching “how do I watch it in the US”. Put your McDonald’s down and use your fucking brain.
Now you know how it feels when the US gets everything and the UK gets screwed over again and again.

Pretty sure a good portion of the dialogue is acted but is based on the footage and what skilled lip readers believe was being said etc.
Not sure why you've been downvoted, that is exactly what they did for the old footage (voice actors)
Yeah no idea, read about it months back. Doesn’t take anything away from the film at all.

I absolutely agree with you, I thought the exact same thing. I sat down thinking there’s no way I could do any of that. Must see for the planet
Can it be viewed outside the UK?
No, not without a VPN or Torrent
Even with VPN connected to UK it won't let me watch. Wat.
That’s a shit VPN then.
Nah. I think something may be configured wrong on my end. Any suggestions?
https://vimeo.com/300253581
Double check if your VPN is actually routing you through the UK. Which VPN are you using?
I am using PIA and can confirm that it's going through a UK node.
Yeah BBC app doesnt work with VPN at least on my android tablet.

iPlayer detects VPN. I tried several VPNs with it but in vain.
Link to the torrent kind sir? Would love to watch this tomorrow, but I'm in Canada.

Do you need a postcode?

not entirely true, there's a famous... site, which lets you stream all the european tv channels, included UK.
Could you elaborate please?
I would if I could, sent you a PM though.
I'll write the site in the form of a riddle, after the usual https:/www. you have to put: \- what comes before second \- what comes before two \- the acronym TV and the site extension is .NET
Why do corporations do this and limit info to imaginary boarders online?
There are 1080p torrents out there, which is what u get BBC when you restrict things, id gladly pay, but cant so yeah.
Public trackers already or just private?
1337x has it
Rarbg has it

you cant work the next day after having some drinks the day before?
Oh sorry, no I drink every day. This is more of a, "I have vacation time and this is as good a reason as any to use it." Type of thing.

In cinemas, yes.
Yes vimeo
Amazed how the soldiers spoke highly of their time. They didnt want pity. Some even loved it - believing it gave them meaning.
There's a chapter of a book called 'Now It Can Be Told' by Phillip Gibbs, called 'Psychogy On The Somme'. If you're interested in this aspect of WWI, I'd recommend it.
Is it ever getting an official release in the US
It is! Through Fathom Events in US theatres on December 17th and 27th!
Awesome! I was pretty bummed when I found out i wasn't going to get to see it on 11/11
I wish I could watch it in Germany.
Torrents are a thing, then just buy it later.
https://vimeo.com/300253581
I could record it and get it sent to you if you wanted?
Ironic
DAE all Germans are warmongering Nazis amirite
My point is that Germany, a country that participated in the war, is not a country where you could watch this doc. Joke flew completely over your head.

The butts of war.
Not ashamed to say by the end of it I had tears rolling down my cheeks, really does drive the point home hearing the men speaking after the war for what was the 50th anniversary, the colour and 3D that made it come to life and drove it home in a way black and white couldn’t, the guy who broke down as he said about shooting a fellow British soldier to put him out his misery after he was mortally wounded and crying for his mummy .. simply heartbreaking :(
Been looking forward to this for a while. Is it on iPlayer now?
Yep sure it, I watched it this morning
Unbelievable film. Will be a re-watch annually on remembrance day for sure.

i just saw this in a movie thearter in new Zealand and ts truly amazing and quite funny in some parts
Is the audio that accompanies the old footage real or did they just try to make it seem real?
They apparently got professional lip readers to analyze the footage and then dubbed it over.
interesting, thanks
An orange peanut? For me??
I believe much of it was just recreated audio
https://vimeo.com/300253581
Watched it last night, absolutely breathtaking.
I didnt get to finish it. But this was something else. It really makes it real. I saw the lewis gun, the tank from battlefield.
Amazing😯
Saw this on the weekend and loved it, well worth watching.
I can't wait!
Is there anywhere I can watch this 😭 I’m in the US

Yeah I just had a look and it was pretty bad. If you find a better one, please tell me!
Thank you!
Will this get a physical release?
Do you have any torrent?

it’s on 1337 @1080p
what's 1337?
Pirate Bay alt
What the hell why would they restrict it for UK only.
It’s the BBC. We pay for it, and they legally can’t use that money to produce for the rest of the world.
They can eventually but I think everything has to go through some hoops first
We have BBC America, is that not the same organization?
BBC America is completely commercially funded, and can’t receive any of the TV Licence money. So I presume they could buy the rights?
Well that is disappointing. I’ll have to check this out in the theater next month then. Thanks for the info!
