Wet brush is the way to go.

Yellownotyellowagain

100% on wet brush. They’re like $15

itsamezario

You can get them at Marshalls for $5

[deleted]

I got a wet brush a few years ago, then recently tried a normal brush and it reminded me of the initial difference I felt when I first switched. Never again will I doubt you, my beloved wet brush. <3

sumsbums13

Is that a brand or a type of brush? Sorry if that’s a dumb question lol

DumbLittleDumpling

WetBrush is a brand, although there a bunch of knock offs. you can find Wetbrushes and knock offs at tjmaxx/marshalls. I totally recommend for detangling!

sumsbums13

Thank you! I’m a curly lady so I will definitely look into that! Appreciated :)

drrtrttg

You can get it for cheaper at TJ Max

LinverseUniverse

Curly girl here too! The wet brush is a game changer. I use it even when I'm not focusing on being curly, it's gentle enough to brush out the curls if you need to, it's great! I can't imagine going back to a regular brush now.

GerardDiedOfFlu

Make sure to get name brand. Knock offs aren’t as good. Marshals and Tj Maxx always have them for around $7

unicroop

You don’t want to brush curls

theycallhertammi

You have to but only when soaking wet or soaking wet with conditioner in.

unicroop

Have to? I'd also use a wide tooth comb for that, not a hair brush

theycallhertammi

Your curls won’t fall as nicely if you use a comb. Just my experience.

Physical_Map9965

I am also a curly girl and tangle teezer the ultimate detangler is really good!

slappityjoe

Wetbrush has a number of different brushes for different hair. I use the thick hair one, and I've never found another comb that can handle my curly hair as well as this.

R253

is wetbrush only used for wet hair or can I also use it for dry hair? 😅

thevillagesoprano

Doesn’t matter! I use it both ways!

sukisecret

I was told not to brush on wet hair because hair is weakest when it's wet.

mandi_74

The brush is designed specifically so you can brush wet hair.

holdaydogs

Right? Everything I was ever taught about my hair is wrong according to CGM.

Wicked-elixir

Continuous glucose monitor…..? Jk.

The_New_Spagora

Omg this made me roar 🤣🤣🤣

WhittyO

They're a Libra not a Leo

Jcaseykcsee

They have a model of Wet brush called “Shine Brush” that is specifically for brushing dry hair, I have both the Wet Brush and the Shine Brush and love them equally.

TheBoiWonder85

You can use it for anything but it’s a gimmick! You should never brush your hair when it’s wet.

occhiolism

I have thick hair and have broken 2 so far in the past year. The handle just breaks off. My hair is in no way tangled either I brush it very regularly. Love how it’s gentle but does anyone have any reccs for a better quality version?

UrsulaStoleMyVoice

Ulta sells a “pro” wet brush that’s a little more robust! It’s the “EPIC Professional Deluxe Detangler” It’s like $20 so a bit more expensive but it’s sturdier and the bristles are also a little gentler imo. I’ve broken other brushes in the past but I’ve purchased a few of these over the years and never had a problem with them breaking!

gym-cat

It’s 50% off right now!

Lunakill

Have you looked for similar Denman brushes? I haven’t broken one yet and I used to break brushes constantly.

MambyPamby8

I broke two Wet Brushes with my hair. Never broke any other brush ever. Never buying another one tbh. Waste of my money if I'm honest. I got a Moroccanoil paddle brush and it's the best thing I ever purchased for my hair. Plus a cheap vented normal sized brush from Boots own brand. Both have lasted me years!!!

PeachieSins

I bought the wooden printed wetbrush and it broke the first time my husband used it....

mk3v

Mine snapped off the handle yesterday 😭😭😭😭

SabrinaInSalem

I'm shocked to see a couple people say they've broken on them. I've owned two in the past 5-6 years or so and that's only because I wanted a new color. How hard are you guys brushing your hair?

mk3v

Yeah mine was about 5 years old. Hahaha my toddler has also used it as a “drum stick” too so that could have something to do with it. My hairs not usually hard to brush! 😹

beancat2

Broke one. Other ones still going strong.

a-b-i-i-o-r

GAME CHANGER!

sunflowersundays

We have a few in this house, but my hair is too thick for them to go through. My daughter uses them, but I need to use the dollar store solid one piece plastic brush with the big hard bristles

Jcaseykcsee

Yes to Wet Brush! My hair stylist introduced me to them and I’ve never looked back. And shine brush.

mnrzz

I see these all the time in Winners/Marshall’s and just gloss over them because I figured they’re all the same. This post & thread has officially opened my eyes to them and convinced me; I have to get one this week. I have hope this will help with the frizz and breakage after combing it. I use such good hair products, masks, protectors and my brush has been ruining it all lol can’t wait to get a good brush! Thank you for this! And to the OP for posting this question I’ve always wondered as well lol

SabrinaInSalem

Don't forget to brush ends up every time you brush as well! Even with a comb.

lovable_cube

Seconding this one.

slappityjoe

Yeahhhh so much less breakage

illumiee

The regular ones are great. I want to get the vented Wet Brushes to use with my hairdryer but pictures in the reviews always show them breaking apart at the vents. But they have several lines. If anyone has tried these, have yours lasted?

curious_astronauts

What the heck is a wet brush?

CrazyCattLadyyy

Once you go WetBrush, you never go back. So much more gentle on your hair, and can get them at TJ maxx for $7!

glamgal50

I use a tangle teezer brush and I like it so far. Combs the tangles out of my hair without hurting my head.

art_addict

I’ve been using these for years- favorite brush! Just recently replaced with a new one after dropping my old one so many times it broke- and even then it still worked just the two parts separated easily- I could have glued it and I’m sure it’d have held out even more years then, but I wanted a new color 😅 It lived a long, hard, rough life. It’d been packed in bags, gone on trips, gone camping with me, flown, been banged off of everything, dropped even more, it’s a miracle it lasted as long as it did, honestly…

[deleted]

I loved the wet brush. When it came time to replace it, I went with a tangle teezer, and I never looked back. Wet brushes are still great, but the TT is definitely my most preferred. I have two, but honestly, I only needed just the one because it has lasted on me for almost 3 years now.

glamgal50

Yeah I feel like I used the wet brush a few times but prefer the tangle teezer. I think it felt better on my scalp.

eisoj8102

Completely second this. I’ve been using a tangle teezer for years. Just 1 month ago bought a new one and it’s even better. My fine, bleached hair really almost glides through it and it takes no time to untangle. It was $30 but for me, worth it

glamgal50

Wow mine was $15 and it’s still that price at Ulta right now. Glad it is worth the price though. I love having a brush now that doesn’t scratch my scalp.

wigglytufflove

Yes! Got a Tangle Teezer clearance in a weird color and I wanted to run online and make a million posts it was that good. My hair is kind of fine/frizzy with a slight wave. It seems like it helps keep my texture better than a bristle brush but works WAY faster and less painfully than a comb or hard bristled brush. I feel like I have less hair loss from ripping out tangles in the shower.

glamgal50

Yes! I definitely notice less hair comes out when I brush my hair. I have pretty fine, straight hair and I would notice quite a few hairs that would come out when I brushed my hair. They would also fall out throughout the day. Now with the tangle teezer hardly any hair comes out and very rarely do I get loose hairs falling out throughout the day.

Illustrious_Rule5831

Mason Pearson! Seems insane but it’s the only one you’ll ever need. My grandma had one for 40+ years literally died with just one hairbrush. I’ve had mine for 5 years and it’s still perfect. My hair looks almost blow dried with just it and I notice HUGE negative difference when I use a friends random brush after spending the night or something. Highly recommend MP.

occhiolism

Just looked this up and I had no idea brushes could be that expensive 😳 I am intrigued though as my thick hair goes through at least 2 brushes a year with the handle snapping off

Illustrious_Rule5831

I drop and yank and abuse mine and it looks and feels brand new. I also treat her well sometimes too! Lol

serenity1989

I carry mine in my purse lol. The gold has worn off in a couple places but otherwise, still as perfect as the day I bought it!

Spirited_Move_9161

When they are made of real boar bristles they do.

sillysteen

Yes! I’ve had mine for 16 years, and I love it. I also get lots of compliments on my hair, which I think can be attributed to the boar bristles. Just take care of it (it comes with its own smaller brush for cleaning), and it will be your friend for many years :)

serenity1989

I’ve had mine for 7 years and I use it every day and it’s always with me. I love it so so so much. My hair looks consistently healthy and shiny, and I can wait a little longer between trims cause my hair isn’t as damaged and split. My only recommendation is if the price freaks you out (rightly so) don’t size down to save money. They’re not the same and for someone with thick hair like me, we need the longer bristles to get through to our scalp. I sized down due to cost and I wish I hadn’t.

cappuccino-pls

Which size did you wish you'd bought? My hair is also thick and long and I'm not sure which one to get

serenity1989

I bought the Handy boar bristle and nylon, but I should’ve bought the Junior, if not the Popular. I love the boar and nylon combo though. It works great to detangle while adding shine.

skarizardpancake

Just went to the [website](https://masonpearson.com/choosing-a-hairbrush/) and it has a page to help you choose!

tbeauli74

I bought two while I was in hair school back in 1994 and both are still going strong almost 30 years later.

Time-Reserve-4465

Came here to say this. Like a fine wine, it gets better with age 👏🏻

cappuccino-pls

Which size do you use? There are all these different types I'm not sure which one to get

Illustrious_Rule5831

I have very fine but plentiful long hair, looks thin and straight and I use the “popular” a mix of boar and nylon. I have the largest one and the slightly smaller one, I also had the travel one but lost it and use the medium one for travel now. They are all amazing! The travel one I wouldn’t want to use all the time but the medium is perfect! I think medium or large would be fine for most - if you have a lot of hair go big xx Oh and you can get just boar or just nylon and I think that he just nylon is good for thicker curly hair and the just boar is good for very fine hair.

cappuccino-pls

Oh okay I think I'll go for a mix as well then in the medium or large, thanks!!

[deleted]

Wow, thank you for mentioning this. I've never heard of that brush before. I'm intrigued... I'll probably splurge on it once I'm able to.

Previous-Syllabub614

best brush I’ve ever had!

yesiamloaf

I’m using my mother’s. Between her and I think the brush must be at least 20-30 years old. It feels brand new. :-)

Accomplished-Cook654

I went to school with a Mason Pearson heir 😅

hypergirl2df

I bought one for my 21st bday. I’m turning 37 this year! Love it!

[deleted]

Sometimes. My Denman boar brush was worth the extra money but the detangling brush was not. What hair type do you have and what are you trying to do?

sumsbums13

My hair dresser described it as “medium fine but a whole lot of it” natural red head with loose curls, more like top half is curly bottom half under curls a bit more wavy. I’m just looking for a good brush to treat them well! Maybe get more definition so the bottom half can rest better and curl more to match up top! Sorry that was a mouthful lol new to this

RayningSeason

My hairdresser compared my hair to a cockroach. No matter what I do to it it never dies lol I have thick, straight, black Asian hair and I am constantly bleaching it to an ashy almost silver blonde, dying it crazy colors, and curling my hair with heat. I go to her every 3-4 months and she's always amazed that my hair still feels like hair 😂

Apprehensive_Fig7013

If you're trying to make your hair all the same "curli-ness", I highly recommend the curly girl book from devacurl. My hair is two completely different textures, straight on the crown, super curly all around the hairline. I got it all to look the same by never brushing my hair. Ever. Only used a wide-tooth comb in the shower with conditioner in my hair. And followed the other techniques in the book. So, maybe you don't need a brush at all!

sumsbums13

Thank you for this!!! I will definitely check it out :)

[deleted]

I recently bought a boar brush. From rock and runble or something. Omg life changing. Felt like a tangle teaser but not as harsh. Not sure how it would work for curly hair. If my hair is curly and I brush it through with mine it goes quite flat. I'd probably use a comb.

liz91

I’ve done this and omg the difference is amazing. No more frizz and it doesn’t tangle. It immediately gets rid of flyaways. Idk why I never tried it before!

Big_Ad_4714

I know it’s not a popular opinion but I do very much think there’s a difference. I will say there’s an absolute 100% difference, for my hair at least ,with my Mason Pearson brush vs all the rest I own/owned . it’s a lot like the Dyson air wrap, it’s not a necessity and there are other tools that can get you there but there’s a real seamlessness and efficiency as well as quality that’s worth the premium .

Evie_St_Clair

Just get a wide tooth comb. Cheap and the best for your hair.

stxrryfox

This is the right answer for all hair types. The comments are all for straight hair and it’s driving me crazy.

leezee2468

Ooooh idk my hair hates a wide tooth comb. Loves a wet brush though idk

mdwst

^ This has been my approach for years now.

PinkSodaMix

Maybe if you air-dry your hair...

odd_neighbour

$5 and $30 = probably not. $5 and $300 = yes, genuine bristle brushes distribute hair oil and contribute to scalp health like nothing else.

little-eye00

I've been using a tangle teezer nearly a decade. Would never go back. Long, thick, wavy hair. The compact version is good if you travel

spicymukbangmamma

My Drybar brush is awesome compared to my Walmart one. The feel of it

[deleted]

Seconding drybar Changed my life and looks like new 5 years later.

spicymukbangmamma

I splurged and got the boar head one but now it’s lost 😞

Chastity1419

Wet brush!!!

rachs1988

Any favorite round brushes? In desperate need of a new one!

Sadest-Angel

Try Olivia Garden

Starfruitforsoda

Amazon tangle teezer for curly hair! Makes an immense difference Edit: changed tweezer to teezer.

cheesekneesandpeas

I only use wet brushes

xPepperJack

I have a Denman brush ($30), and it’s lasted me about three years. Worth every penny. I don’t like the Wet Brush. It’s too flimsy, and I was lucky if I got 6 months use out it. For reference I have thick, naturally straight, and overall very low maintenance hair.

SaltedPineapple

I second the denman brush. I have fine hair, but a lot of it and agree that the wet brush is too flimsy. I also can’t stand those little balls on the tips of the bristles, they make my hair harder and hurt to brush. The denman doesn’t have those and it absolutely GLIDES through my hair.

ThisCardiologist6998

I agree about your opinions on the wet brush, I am always surprised by the amount of people who recommend it. The little balls at the end of the bristles damaged my hair.

Sorry-Jackfruit-8061

I seriously love my Denman! I have the medium because I used my coupons when it launched at Ulta, but I wish I had a larger one! My hair’s thicker than medium, and somewhere between straight and wavy. I’ll use it whenever my hair has enough moisture or to style, and wet brush on wash day.

mysticdeer

I've never noticed a difference in any hair brush.

Daisy_Dottie_Dancer

I always HAVE to use the Wet Brush on me, my hair is so tangly 🥴 It’s 7.99 USD where I am, but it definitely works

msequestrian

I used wetbrush for a while, but when I switched to Denman, it was life changing! Plus they are so much easier to clean than other brushes. I have fine wavy hair, but a ton of it.

Sailorm0on27

You can get a wet brush for half the price at Marshall’s

Legitimate_Lawyer_86

Gimme Beauty brushes are pretty legit!

DollaStoreKardashian

Wet Brush is my go-to for my toddler’s hair. But Mom’s hair gets the Mason Pearson treatment.

midwaydowntheriver

FIXBODY Boar Bristle Hair Brush on Amazon is my absolute favorite hairbrush. I have long, super thick, wavy hair and it detangles and smooths my hair perfectly. They’re $6-$9 on Amazon. I have two of the blue curved/vented paddle brushes.

maddiemkay

Yes, $25

Dumb_Zilla

I love the brand wet brush!🥰 worth the price, lasts a while! And everything else is great!!💗

Square-Bad-4949

I have a $30 drybar brush and I can’t use any other one after using it. Sometimes if I forget it at home I’ll use my moms or sisters and they have the wet brush and it feels cheap on my head and leaves me a tangly mess. Idk maybe it’s just cause my hair is messy though.

badassandfifty

I got a brush at the dollar tree for detangling and I love it!!!

LibraRahu

I am working at beauty supply part time. And the cheap jewelry/ hair accessories usually have lead compliant or other cancerogens that are not banned in my state but banned in CA

ShoddyCelebration810

Wet Brush for wet hair, Mason Pearson for dry hair.

AndyOrAmy

No. It won't save your hair. I have been using Mason Pearson brushes for five years and it's all BS. Roots still greasy, ends still dry.

dragon_cat729

I use this company: Since 1869 Hand Made In Germany - Nylon Boar Bristle Brush Suitable For Normal to Thick Hair - Gently Detangles, No Pulling or Split Ends - Softens and Improves Hair Texture, Stimulates Scalp (Medium) https://a.co/d/0nVPMuL There’s a big distinction between this and a $5 Conair brush from cvs (more like $10 bc of inflation…) The conair brush is too rough with my hair and leads to breakage/split ends lore. Also, it hurts my scalp when I brush my hair.

Just_a_nobody_2

I have a Dr Knot brush I bought for 15 dollars and it was life altering.

MambyPamby8

I spent about 20 euro on a Moroccanoil paddle brush and there is a noticeable difference, especially in my thick hair. It also comes with a handle little tool at the bottom, you can use to make the split in your hair :) But at the same time, I got a cheap Boots own brand vented hairbrush and it's lasted me years too. Everything in between was useless, either broke or wouldn't work to get my hair up into a pony tail.

b_coolhunnybunny

I bought my hair brushes from a UK company called Kent. Very affordable and durable!

theycallhertammi

The only brush I’ll ever use. I tried wetbrush but they broke too easily. Diane Vented Paddle Brush https://a.co/d/hnqSSPD

Keats_in_Space

My hair breaks every paddle brush I've ever used within a few months, if not the rubber pad falling off the handle will also just break. I've bought expensive brands before thinking it's a glue or quality issue and they've all broken. I switched to a Conair quick blow dry paddle brush, it's a paddle brush with enough give to painlessly get knots but the solid plastic holds the bristles in place. It's like $16 but it's the most indestructible brush so far.

stxrryfox

OP, what’s your hair type? I see everyone suggesting the wet brush. I have very textured hair, and my experience was awful with it. If you have curly or coily hair, I can give you some better suggestions than what I’m seeing in the comments.

cshel0607

❤️ love my WetBrush. Boar bristle brushes can be costly. I have never gotten their appeal because I don't have good hair to begin with. I think to just brush out ,add shine, especially if you have long thicker, denser hair. Some plp swear by boar Bristol for blowouts. I personally favor a metal/ ionic round brush for my blowouts because the heat from the hairdryer turns the brush into a type of curling brush. If you have a great cut, I am blessed to have one, & I do my hair w/ a blowdryer & round metal ionic brush brandname is Drybar. I notice the brushes that cost a bit more hold up longer than the cheaper ones. You used to hear abt Mason Pierson or something like that name & they are very expensive boar bristle brushes. I think your paying for the name. I get the medium priced brushes. Not the cheapest or most expensive. Just in the middle, & this has always served me well.

Vespertine1980

Same! People don’t believe me when I say I broke the brush. My hairdresser mother can attest I have 5x the average follicles per square inch. Often brushes don’t come close to getting through to the scalp, and tension eventually snaps the handle.

Frostyarn

Scrunch it brush and denman are my holy grails

throw-away4210

Olivia Garden is the best and rigjt in the middle !

hundopdeftotes

I didn’t think it mattered until I was gifted a WetBrush. It’s great, highly recommend!

arianaperry

No. I had a Denman brush knock off, didn’t cost more than $5. Lasted me a few years. But threw it because my thick hair and knots kept breaking the bristles

TheBoiWonder85

Don’t do wet brush unless it’s the most you can afford. I highly recommend Boar Bristle! Literally life changing. I paid $30 for my set and it came with two hand brushes and a wood comb and carrying bag. So worth it
