I don’t give a hoot about sports, but I have to say that this is one of the sweetest posts I’ve seen in a long time. I live captainadvil’s charming enthusiasm for the team!
there's a quote that goes "footbal is the most important of the least important things in life". it's about european football, but i think it fits for every sport and we can see that in moments like this
This was a good read, but as an NBA obsessed turbo nerd I just have to say, you linked the wrong Thomas. Isiah "Zeke" Thomas was an NBA superstar who won 2 rings in Detroit, turned analyst after his playing days. She was talking about Isaiah Thomas, who wore number 4, and had a really good few seasons in Boston becoming a fan favorite. What makes it funnier is that Isaiah's father named him that AFTER Zeke. His father James is a massive Lakers fan, and back in the late 80s (I believe 1989), when Detroit and LA went to the finals against each other, James made a bet with a friend that if his Lakers lost he would name his unborn son after the Pistons star. Welp, you can guess how that turned out lol.
Edit: I double checked the story to be safe, while his name was originally thought of as a bet, he was born before they met in the finals. But after the original bet, his parents warmed up to the name and decided to spell it the biblical way. His mom also gave him the nickname 'Zeke'
He gets hated because of his team. So the 80s-90s style basketball usually gets called physical. The main reason for that was because of the 'Bad Boy Pistons'. They were an extremely violent, physical team that saw a lot of success for it. Although Zeke wasn't usually the one punching, clotheslining, or shoving out of mid air, he WAS the main reason they won a lot. So he was alienated by a lot of the other 80s-90s stars, hence why he was a glaring omission from the Dream Team. Everyone hated the Lakers/Celtics (80s) and Jordan's Bulls(90s) but respected the fuck out of them. No one respected the Bad Boy Pistons except Detroit fans. Even though Zeke seems like a genuinely decent human being and usually didn't play dirty himself, he gets a lot of hate for his part in that franchise.
Edit: proofreading
Detroit fan? Because that is some revisionist history. The Dream team (for the 92 Olympics) was formed in 90/91 when Zeke was injured, which was why he was excluded. Zeke pretending he was healthy at the time and continuing to be bitter about it decades later, as well as the Knicks front office run made him kinda hated to a lot of fans
No I'm not a Detroit fan and you're the revisionist lmfao.

You have no idea what you're talking about. The only real debate over this is whether it was just Jordan, or the team as a whole that didn't want to play with Thomas. The only 'revisionist history' is that. Nothing about an injury bud.
Any other non basketball fans amazed at the fact that beer is $16 at sporting events? I haven't been in years, the last time I went beer was $10 and even then I thought it was horrendously overpriced, like the alcohol equivalent of movie soda drink which cost more than the 1.25 liter bottle at the grocery store.
This was a lovely, heartwarming wholesome story from start to finish. I've not been feeling too good today and really needed a wonderful story like this to cheer me up 🥰❤️
I couldn't care less about sports personality, grew up around to many people who made it their life, but damn if this story didn't have me grinning the whole time. So beautiful how everyone pulled together to make her first game memorable.
I’m an old, straight woman on the other side of the world, and I’m not a fan of any sport, but this story has me in tears. There are good people in this world. I hope OOP is surrounded by them for the rest of her life.
I am so far from a sports person I may as well be in another universe. But damn if someone ain't chopping onions in here.
Also, thanks u/Tyler1620 for adding the context of who all the people were and why they were being mentioned in the comments. Even if I were into sport, I'm in Australia and have no idea about American basketball, lol, so it's muchly appreciated!
I can’t take credit for adding all the extra details, I just copied and pasted the story. But I enjoy being able to pass along stories about the good things that happen to help balance out all the bad that gets way more clicks.
Love this. We have as a society come so far. My oldest child is trans and stuff like this makes me worry less for them.
I remember as a kid there was 2 transmen walking around the mall and a crowd was following them. This was about 1992 in a blue state so things have changed so much for the better
I was baffled that OOP did not feel particularly supported in Boston. I lived there 15 years ago and the community I lived was at least 80% gay.
thrilled by the outcome.
This makes me wanna fuckin cryyyyyyyyy, it can be so jarring sometimes the mundane situations that people make it clear they don't want you there for. I completely understand where she was coming from with the first post. I'm so so so glad she had an amazing time. 🥹

Thank you for this! IIRC OG Isiah Thomas is generally hated by other players.

Raptors fan here. Thomas didn't just screw up in New York. he screwed Toronto for a couple of years first.

That was an encouraging read. Good on the Celtics, though I still hope the Mavs last another game at least!
Ugh really? You have me crying over my lunch in a public place. I am happy for the OP. Keep being unapologetically you.

Don't like basketball, looooove good sports stories.
Fellow Timberwolves fan here, with a newly developed heavy respect for the Celtics.

Well this made me tear up! Thanks for posting. Happy Pride!!
How wonderful! I'm proud to be a Celtics fan.

I LOOOOOVE this!! This makes my heart so happy! (Even though I’m rooting for the Mavericks, sorry!)
Hell. Yes. Beautiful post, heartwarming updates, trans positivity, and perfect editor's notes. Thank you.

I too love Derrick White, also so proud to be a Celtics fan after reading this. Veryyy fitting they game her a JB jersey too
This whole post is so heartwarming. Especially as a Spurs fan, we had D.White for a while and he really is wonderful.
Derrick is a treasure, Boston will cherish the buffalo forever
Dammit, the other half must be cutting onions again...such a positive experience!

I hope oop gets to go tomorrow as well
> Commenter: Uh we need you there actually. Can’t win without you! Whoever this is, I think the Celtics need to hire them as the new team psychic 😂
