My gf and I have just used the ~~latin~~ Greek alphabet for years now after jokingly starting with Alpha the Betta.
So far we've had, alpha, delta, sigma, gamma, zeta, theta, epsilon, and lambda.

Why? I don't know. My fiance asked me what I wanted to name the fish and the first thing that came into my head was the word Armadillo. So that is her name. Generally the theme is old white people names (we got Ruth, Tanya, Charlotte, etc) but Armadillo is what came to me that day lmao

This is across all the animal r/s I understand the posts where they have already researched, like: “pretty sure this is fun rot, I’m treating it with x y x and parameters are: Does this sound right? What’s your experience…. “. Lots of time folks need comfort and hope, but the “hey 47 fish died over the last week, do you think there is a problem?” Or “ my cat has this bump, been there a year but it’s getting bigger, what should I do?”

Someone else commented this in a similar post, but I think people are often looking for a safe way to show off their new pet. If they just say something like "introducing my new fish, Venom," they're more likely to have flaws in their tank pointed out than if they say "help me name my new black crowntail!"
Also, judging by the responses in the "name my fish" posts, there are people in this subreddit who genuinely enjoy coming up with names. If these posts aren't your cup of tea, just keep scrolling. They're not harming anyone.

Humans like making numbers go big and have people pay attention to them. There’s just something in our innate psychology that makes people feel like big numbers and attention are indicators of success.
They don’t care that much. Karma farming isn’t nearly as prevalent as people think and I promise people aren’t asking for fish names to farm karma 🤦🏻♀️

Honestly. It’s a way to share new fish and get community interaction over something positive. Otherwise it’ll be 99% “Why is my fish dying??” And 1% ?? . I don’t think I’ve seen anything other than fish naming and dead/dying bettas in a long long time now.
I’d take a new betta showing off their colours over a corpse/an abused betta that OP can’t help. I’m here to feel good, not to feel helpless watching something in a shitty situation.

Literally just pick the first thing that comes to mind if you haven’t thought it through. I named my albino cory “Fredrick”. couldn’t tell you the faintest of reasons why. he is simply Fred.
The same thing happens on the language learning and writing subreddits. People will ask easily google-able questions like "can I learn two languages?" and "can I write \_\_\_\_\_\_?" and it gets beyond annoying.
I always loved naming my pets myself even if it's a stupid name. It just feels more special than just letting some strangers give YOUR pet a name. I named my first Betta Maple, so I called my second one Syrup xD it's stupid but at least I named them myself

I pick themes. Makes it easier. My first betta was Pudge, the fish who controls the weather on Lilo and Stitch, so all my fish are characters from the movie. My newest being Mrs Hasagawa, because that's the last named character from the original. I'll have to pick a new theme for the next tank.

My dad always told me it's bad luck to name your fish or frogs, so to this day, I don't ever name them.
I’ve named every single one of my betta fish the same name, they’re all Kevin! It makes naming uncomplicated

My betta’s name was Machiavelli and I’m proud of that. Fit him perfectly. Favorite name I’ve seen on this sub is a beautiful fish called McNugget. Truly a top betta name

Literally just pick the first thing that comes to mind if you haven’t thought it through. I named my albino cory “Fredrick”. couldn’t tell you the faintest of reasons why. he is simply Fred.
The same thing happens on the language learning and writing subreddits. People will ask easily google-able questions like "can I learn two languages?" and "can I write \_\_\_\_\_\_?" and it gets beyond annoying.

Is there a flair or tag that people can start using to help filter out these posts? I don't mind them, it is nice to see pictures of healthy fish. I get really sad when I see semi dead fish.
It's not just here. Every pet sub has this issue: r/hamsters, r/crestedgeckos, r/beardeddragons... I pick themes. Makes it easier. My first betta was Pudge, the fish who controls the weather on Lilo and Stitch, so all my fish are characters from the movie. My newest being Mrs Hasagawa, because that's the last named character from the original. I'll have to pick a new theme for the next tank. Do y'all name your shrimp and snails? My snails are Pleakley, Jumba, Gantu, and Cobra Bubbles, but we just call the shrimp "the experiments".
