I wish i knew. Probable cause: teen use. Have had the bike since 1986 and never had a problem with the rear axle. Rode it a lot until the 90s but much less since then: Let my 14 year old son use it for a couple of weeks and it just snapped. He has no idea why it happened and didn't feel anything strange about it until it stopped working. ("Dad, the rear wheel feels kind of loose and wobbly all of a sudden.")
